The rates for diffractive quarkonium plus prompt-photon associated production at the LHC are estimated. The theoretical framework considered in the J/Psi (or Upsilon) production associated with a direct photon at the hadron collider is the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. The corresponding single diffractive cross section is computed based on the hard diffractive scattering factorization supplemented by absorptive corrections. Such processes are sensitive to the gluon content of the Pomeron at small Bjorken-x and they may also be a good place to test the different available mechanisms for quarkonium production at hadron colliders.
In this paper we study the inclusive and diffractive double quarkonium production. Based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for the quarkonium production mechanism we estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the cross section for the $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ and $ΥΥ$ production in diffractive processes at LHC energies. The contributions of the color-singlet and color-octet channels are estimated and predictions for the total cross sections in the kinematical regions of the LHC experiments are also presented. Our results demonstrate that the contribution of diffractiv…
The inclusive $J/Ψ$ production by direct and resolved photoproduction in the $γ$p scattering is calculated based on the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) factorization formalism, which is in good agreement with the experimental data of total cross section distribution of heavy quarkonium production at HERA. Then we extend the formalism including the direct and resolved photoproduction processes to resolved pomeron model to study the heavy quarkonium photoproduction at the LHC energies. We present the predictions of rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the inclusive di…
We study the diffractive photo- and leptoproductions of $J / ψ$ and $ψ'$ on the proton, and examine the validity of the small-size color dipole approximation to the production of radially excited heavy quarkonium. The dipole model predicts a small ratio of $ψ'$ to $J / ψ$ photoproduction cross sections, which does not agree with experimental data. We show that this discrepancy originates from a large transverse size of $ψ'$ which makes the convergence of the transverse size expansion questionable, and the calculation without the dipole approximation turns out to be consistent with the data. Pr…
The inclusive $J/Ψ$, $Ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ direct and resolved photoproduction are investigated by including the quark subprocesses in the framework of non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). We find that the theoretical total cross section of heavy quarkonium productions are in good agreement with the data available at HERA, once the $γq$, $qg$ and $qq$ subprocesses in the heavy quark pair productions are taken into account. The inclusive diffractive rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of $J/Ψ$, $Ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ in $pp$, $pPb$ and $PbPb$ collisions at LHC are also studied…
We study the hard color dipole-nucleon cross section within perturbative QCD and discuss its relation to observables in diffractive leptoproduction of heavy quarkonium. The dipole cross section calculated with the unintegrated gluon density of the nucleon substantially differs from the well-known perturbative form $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ for $b > 0.3$fm, where $b$ is the transverse separation of the dipole. We show the measured ratio of $ψ'$ to $J / ψ$ photoproduction cross sections constrains the dipole cross section at intermediate $b$, and in fact excludes the simple $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ behavior.…
The double quarkonium production in single and double diffractive processes is investigated considering $pp$ collisions at the Run 2 LHC energy. Using the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for the quarkonium production and the Resolved Pomeron model to describe the diffractive processes, we estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum dependencies of the cross sections for the $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ and $ΥΥ$ production. The contributions of the color-singlet and color-octet channels are estimated and predictions for the total cross sections in the kinematical regions of the LHC experiment…
Hard diffractive photo- and electroproduction of heavy vector mesons ($J/ψ$ and $Υ$) is evaluated within the leading $α_s\ln{Q^2 \overΛ_{QCD}^2}$ approximation of QCD. In difference from our earlier work on that subject, also the production of transversely polarized vector mesons is calculated. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the vector meson's $q\bar q$ light-cone wave function. In that context, conventional non-relativistic quarkonium models and a light-front QCD bound state calculation are critically examined and confronted with QCD expectations. Our numerical analysis finds a sig…
The production of a quarkonium -- pair in exclusive and diffractive processes in $pp$ collisions at the LHC and FCC energies is investigated. We consider the $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ and $ΥΥ$ production in these processes and present predictions for the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions considering the kinematical ranges expected to be covered by central and forward detectors. Results for the cross sections are also presented. Our results indicate that the double $J/Ψ$ production is dominated by the exclusive process, while the double $Υ$ production receive a large contribution of the diffractive…
We present a study of heavy quarkonium production in hard diffractive process by the Pomeron exchange for Tevatron and LHC energies. The numerical results are computed using recent experimental determination of the diffractive parton density functions in Pomeron and are corrected by unitarity corrections through gap survival probability factor. We give predictions for single as well as central diffractive ratios. These processes are sensitive to the gluon content of the Pomeron at small Bjorken-x and may be particularly useful in studying the small-x physics. They may also be a good place to t…
The inclusive diffractive quarkonium photoproduction in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions is investigated considering the Resolved Pomeron Model to describe the diffractive interaction. We estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions for the $J/Ψ$, $Ψ(2S)$ and $Υ$ photoproduction in hadronic collisions at the LHC and present our estimate for the total cross sections at the Run 2 energies. A comparison with the predictions associated to the exclusive production also is presented. Our results indicate that the inclusive diffractive production is a factor $\gtrsim 10$ smaller than the exclu…
The process AB --> Quarkonium + photon + X, for a heavy quarkonium state such as J/psi or Upsilon, is considered. The ratio of the cross-sections for this process in pp and pp(bar) collisions is shown to be a vary sensitive probe of models of quarkonium formation.
In this paper we propose the study of the diffractive quarkonium photoproduction in $pp$ collisions at LHC energies to probe the photon flux associated to a ultrarelativistic proton. The total photon distribution is expected to be given in terms of the elastic and inelastic components. Distinctly from the elastic photon component which can be determined from the elastic form factors, the magnitude of the inelastic component still is an open question. We consider the current parametrizations for the photon distribution of a proton and estimate the rapidity distributions and total cross sections…
We propose a novel mechanism for exclusive diffractive Higgs production $pp \to p H p $ in which the Higgs boson carries a significant fraction of the projectile proton momentum. This mechanism will provide a clear experimental signal for Higgs production due to the small background in this kinematic region. The key assumption underlying our analysis is the presence of intrinsic heavy flavor components of the proton bound state, whose existence at high light-cone momentum fraction $x$ has growing experimental and theoretical support. We also discuss the implications of this picture for exclusi…
The process of exclusive electroproduction of vector quarkonium (EEQ), $e p\to epV$, is per se an interesting topic in studies of quarkonium production mechanism, QCD description of diffractive interaction and nucleon structure. We investigate this process in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD and QCD collinear factorization at the next-to-leading order QCD accuracy. The perturbative convergence behavior is discussed in a large range of photon virtuality $Q^2$. The $J/ψ$ large-$Q^2$ electroproduction data at HERA can be well explained, and the $Υ$ differential production rate is predicted. T…
In this work, we investigate the associated production of prompt heavy quarkonium with a massive (anti)bottom quark to leading order in the NRQCD factorization formalism at the LHC. We present numerical results for the processes involving $J/ψ,χ_{cJ},Υ$ and $χ_{bJ}$. From our work, we find that the production rates of these processes are quite large, and these processes have the potential to be detected at the LHC. When $p_T$ is smaller than about 10 GeV, the $c\bar{c} [ ^1S_0^{(8)} ]$ state give the main contribution to the $p_T$ distribution of prompt $J/ψ$ with a (anti)bottom quark producti…
In this paper, we investigate the inclusive diffractive hadroproduction for $\rm η_{c}$ and $\rm η_{b}$ at the LHC energies. Based on the NRQCD factorization formalism and the resolved-Pomeron model for the quarkonium production mechanism, we estimate the rapidity, momentum fraction loss dependence of the cross section. We give prediction ratios for single and central diffractive processes with respect to non diffractive process. These inclusive processes are sensitive to gluon content of Pomeron for small-$x$ and Reggeon for large-$x$, useful to study small and large-$x$ physics and good to t…
Our goal is the study of color effects on the $J/ψ$ and $D$ mesons production, as well as the study of their elastic production. We use the Color Evaporation Model (CEM), where a single factor takes into account the probability that the $c\bar{c}$ produced in a color octet state turns into a physical (colorless) quarkonium or continues as a color octet, producing open charm. The main result of this work, besides investigating the range of applicability of the CEM, is to show that this model can be used to describe the elastic processes of $J/ψ$ and open charm photoproduction without the use of…
We review recent progress in the description of heavy-quarkonium production in 2->2 processes at next-to-leading order in the factorization framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we consider the production of prompt charmonium in association with a hadron jet or a prompt photon in two-photon collisions and exclusive double-charmonium production in e^+e^- annihilation.
We predict the dependence on energy of photo(electro) production processes: $γ(γ^*)+p\to V+ X$ with large rapidity gap at small x and large momentum $-t$ transferred to $V$ in pQCD. Here V is a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ, Υ$) or longitudinally polarized light vector meson (in the electroproduction processes), etc. In the kinematics of HERA we calculate the dependence on energy of cross sections of these processes as the function of momentum transfer $t$, photon virtuality $Q^2$ and/or quarkonium mass. In the kinematical region $Q_0^2\le -t\ll Q^2+M^2_V$ the nontrivial energy dependence of the cros…
We consider single-diffractive (SD) Higgs production in association with heavy flavour in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The main focus of our study is a reliable estimate of SD/inclusive ratio, not a precision computation of the cross sections. The calculations are performed within the framework of the phenomenological dipole approach, which includes by default the absorptive corrections, i.e. the gap survival effects at the amplitude level. The dominant mechanism is the diffractive production of heavy quarks, which radiate a Higgs boson (Higgsstrahlung). Although diffractive production…
We emphasize the importance of tagging the outgoing forward protons to sharpen the predictions for New Physics at the LHC (such as the diffractive production of a light Higgs boson). The rescattering effects lead to a rich distinctive structure of the cross section as a function of the transverse momenta of the protons. We show that a study of the correlations between the proton transverse momenta for double-diffractive production of central dijets will provide a detailed check of the whole diffractive formalism. Adopting a perturbative two-gluon structure of the Pomeron, we emphasize that 2++…
We investigate the inclusive hadroproduction of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a testing ground for the semi-hard regime of QCD. Our theoretical setup is the hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization, where the standard collinear approach is supplemented by the $t$-channel resummation of leading and next-to-leading energy logarithms à la BFKL. We present predictions for rapidity and azimuthal-angle differential distributions, hunting for stabilizing effects of the high-energy series under higher-order corrections. Our reaction represents an…
In this paper we study the double $J/ψ$ production in central diffractive processes considering the Resolved Pomeron model. Based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for the quarkonium production mechanism we estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the cross section for the double $J/ψ$ production in diffractive processes at LHC energies. The contributions of the color-singlet and color-octet channels are estimated and predictions for the total cross sections in the kinematical regions of the LHC experiments are also presented. Our results demonstrate…
We study coherent and incoherent diffractive hadron production in high energy quarkonium--heavy nucleus collisions as a probe of the gluon saturation regime of QCD. Taking this process as a model for pA collisions, we argue that the coherent diffractive gluon production, in which the target nucleus states intact, exhibits a remarkable sensitivity to the energy, rapidity and atomic number dependence. The incoherent diffractive gluon production is less sensitive to the details of the low-x dynamics but can serve as a probe of fluctuations in the color glass condensate. As a quantitative measure …
The quarkonium hadroproduction in association with a photon at high energies provides a probe of the dynamics of the strong interactions as it is dependent on the nuclear gluon distribution. Therefore, it could be used to constrain the behavior of the nuclear gluon distribution in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such processes are useful to single out the magnitude of the shadowing/antishadowing effects in the nuclear parton densities. In this work we investigate the influence of nuclear effects in the production of JPsi + photon and Upsilon + photon and estimate the transverse …
We discuss heavy quark and quarkonium production in various kinematic regions at the HERA ep collider. In contrast to fixed target experiments, collider kinematics allows the possibility of detailed measurements of particle production in the proton fragmentation region. One thus can study parton correlations in the proton Fock states materialized by the virtual photon probe. We discuss various configurations of inelastic electron-proton scattering, including peripheral, diffractive, and deep inelastic processes. In particular, we show that intrinsic heavy quark Fock states can be identified by…
We consider the exclusive pseudoscalar heavy-quarkonium (eta_{b,c}) production in association with a photon at future lepton colliders where the collider energies of O(10^2) GeV are far greater than the quarkonium mass. At these energies, the logarithm of mass to collision energy becomes increasingly large hence its resummation becomes particularly important. By making use of the light-cone-distribution factorization formula, we resum the logarithms up to next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy (NLL) that corresponds to order-alpha_s accuracy. We combine the resummed result with a known fixed-ord…
We analyze the validity of a commonly used identification between structures of the virtual photon $γ^*\to Q\bar Q$ and vector meson $V\to Q\bar Q$ transitions. In the existing studies of $S$-wave vector-meson photoproduction in the literature, such an identification is typically performed in the light-front (LF) frame while the radial component of the meson wave function is rather postulated than computed from the first principles. The massive photon-like $V\to Q\bar Q$ vertex, besides the $S$-wave component, also contains an extra $D$-wave admixture in the $Q\bar Q$ rest frame. However, the …
We propose the study of the inclusive production of two $Λ$ hyperons or a single $Λ$-particle in association with a jet, featuring high transverse momenta and large separation in rapidity, as a probe channel of the resummation of energy logarithms in the QCD perturbative series. We give predictions, shaped on kinematic ranges typical of CMS and of the backward CASTOR detector, for cross section and azimuthal-correlation moments between the two emitted objects, showing how considering the tag of $Λ$ baryons eases the comparison between theoretical results and experimental data in the phenomenol…
In this work, we study the radiative decay of $Z$ boson to a $P$-wave quarkonium $H$ in association with a photon, where $H$ can be $χ_{QJ}$, $h_Q$ with $Q=c,b$ and $J=0,1,2$. The helicity amplitudes and the unpolarized decay widths are evaluated up to QCD next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). For the first time, we check the NRQCD factorization for $h_Q$ exclusive production at two-loop order. The leading logarithms (LL) of $m_Z^2/m_Q^2$ in the leading-twist short-distance coefficients, which may potentially ruin the perturbative convergence…
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $J/ψ+W$ production at the LHC, and provide the theoretical distribution of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum. Our results show that the differential cross section $\frac{dσ}{dp_T^{J/ψ}}$ at the LO is significantly enhanced by the NLO QCD corrections. We believe that the comparison between the theoretical predictions for the $J/ψ+W$ production and the experimental data at the LHC can provide a verification for the colour-octet mechanism of non-relativistic QCD in the description of the processes involving heavy quarkonium.
We study the production of heavy quarkonium in association with an additional heavy pair. We argue that important contributions may come from phase space regions where three heavy fermions are separated by relative velocities much lower than the speed of light, and to which standard effective field theories do not apply. In this region, infrared sensitive color exchange is specific to the presence of the unpaired (anti)quark. This effect vanishes as the motion of the additional particle becomes relativistic with respect to the pair, and is completely absent for massless quarks and gluons in th…
In this contribution, we study the inclusive and diffractive $η_{c}$ photoproduction in $pp$ and $pPb$ ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC's) at the LHC Run 2 energies. The quarkonium production is studied using nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) formalism. We present predictions for rapidity and transverse momentum distributions for the $η_c$ photoproduction and present our estimate for the total cross sections at the Run 2 energies.

The double coherent and non-coherent diffractive production of heavy quark - antiquark pairs ($Q \bar{Q}$) in heavy ion scattering at high energies (LHC) is considered. The total and differential cross sections of these processes with the formation of $c \bar{c}$ and $b \bar{b}$ pairs in $pp$, $CaCa$ and $PbPb$ collisions are evaluated. The contribution of the considered mechanisms is a few per cent of the number of heavy quark - antiquark pairs obtained in the processes of hard (QCD) scattering, and it will be taken into account in the registration of $c$, $b$ quarks or, for instance, in the …
We update the study of the production of direct J/Psi in association with a Z boson at the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s by evaluating both the yield differential in P_T and the J/Psi polarisation in the QCD-based Colour-Singlet Model (CSM). Contrary to an earlier claim, QCD corrections at small and mid P_T are small if one assumes that the factorisation and the renormalisation scales are commensurate with the Z boson mass. As it can be anticipated, the t-channel gluon-exchange (t-CGE) topologies start to be dominant only for P_T > mZ/2. The polarisation pattern is not altered by the …
In view of possible photoproduction studies in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, we briefly review the present theoretical understanding of photons and hard photoproduction processes at HERA, discussing the production of jets, light and heavy hadrons, quarkonia, and prompt photons. We address in particular the extraction of the strong coupling constant from photon structure function and inclusive jet measurements, the infrared safety and computing time of jet definitions, the sensitivity of dijet cross sections on the parton densities in the photon, factorization breaking in dif…
We present a novel study on the inclusive production of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a test field of the high-energy QCD dynamics. The large transverse momenta at which the two final-state objects are detected permits us to perform an analysis in the spirit of the variable-flavor number scheme (VFNS), in which the cross section for the hadroproduction of a light parton is convoluted with a perturbative fragmentation function that describes the transition from a light quark to a heavy hadron. The quarkonium collinear fragmentation function is b…
We update the study of the QCD corrections to direct J/psi and Upsilon hadroproduction in association with a photon in the QCD-based approach of the Colour-Singlet (CS) Model. After comparison with the recent full next-to-leading-order (NLO) computation for this process, we provide an independent confirmation to the inclusive case that NLO QCD corrections to quarkonium-production processes whose LO exhibits a non-leading P_T behaviour can be reliably computed at mid and large P_T by considering only the real emission contributions accompanied with a kinematical cut. In turn, we evaluate the le…
Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produce…
The study of the dynamics of strong interactions in the high-energy regime is a core line of frontier researches at the LHC as well as at new-generation colliding facilities. Here, the enhancement of energy logarithms due to diffractive semi-hard final states spoils the convergence of the perturbative series in the QCD running coupling, thus calling for an improvement of the pure collinear factorization that accounts for an all-order resummation of these large logarithmic contributions. Motivated by the recent discovery that inclusive emissions of heavy-flavored particles allow for clear signa…
