The compress-and-forward relay scheme developed by (Cover and El Gamal, 1979) is improved with a modification on the decoding process. The improvement follows as a result of realizing that it is not necessary for the destination to decode the compressed observation of the relay; and even if the compressed observation is to be decoded, it can be more easily done by joint decoding with the original message, rather than in a successive way. An extension to multiple relays is also discussed.
..... joint decoding provides more freedom in choosing the compression at the relay. However, the question remains whether this freedom of selecting the compression necessarily improves the achievable rate of the original message. It has been shown in (El Gamal and Kim, 2010) that the answer is negative in the single-relay case. In this paper, it is further demonstrated that in the case of multiple relays, there is no improvement on the achievable rate by joint decoding either. More interestingly, it is discovered that any compressions not supporting successive decoding will actually lead to s…
We consider a relay network with two relays and two feedback links from the relays to the sender. To obtain the achievability results, we use the compress-and-forward and the decode-and-forward strategies to superimpose facility and cooperation analogue to what proposed by Cover and El Gamal for a relay channel. In addition to random binning, we use deterministic binning to perform restricted decoding. We show how to use the feedback links for cooperation between the sender and the relays to transmit the information which is compressed in the sender and the relays.
The "weak" relay-eavesdropper channel was first studied by Lai and El Gamal, whose achievable scheme introduced noise forwarding (NF) and used backward decoding. We suggest a novel sliding window decoding scheme with a two block decoding delay, where the relay uses compress-forward with Wyner-Ziv (WZ) binning but does not use NF. Wireless engineers will welcome the reduced decoding delay. Sliding window decoding mandates multiblock equivocation calculations; dispensing with NF enables it. We identify nine regimes and develop a case-by-case choice of relay channel codebook and WZ bin sizes to m…
We establish an achievable rate region for discrete memoryless interference relay channels that consist of two source-destination pairs and one or more relays. We develop an achievable scheme combining Han-Kobayashi and noisy network coding schemes. We apply our achievability to two cases. First, we characterize the capacity region of a class of discrete memoryless interference relay channels. This class naturally generalizes the injective deterministic discrete memoryless interference channel by El Gamal and Costa and the deterministic discrete memoryless relay channel with orthogonal receive…
In this paper, we propose a noisy network coding integrated with partial decode-and-forward relaying for single-source multicast discrete memoryless networks (DMN's). Our coding scheme generalizes the partial-decode-compress-and-forward scheme (Theorem 7) by Cover and El Gamal. This is the first time the theorem is generalized for DMN's such that each relay performs both partial decode-and-forward and compress-and-forward simultaneously. Our coding scheme simultaneously generalizes both noisy network coding by Lim, Kim, El Gamal, and Chung and distributed decode-and-forward by Lim, Kim, and Ki…
This paper studies the noncausal relay channel, also known as the relay channel with unlimited lookahead, introduced by El Gamal, Hassanpour, and Mammen. Unlike the standard relay channel model, where the relay encodes its signal based on the previous received output symbols, the relay in the noncausal relay channel encodes its signal as a function of the entire received sequence. In the existing coding schemes, the relay uses this noncausal information solely to recover the transmitted message and then cooperates with the sender to communicate this message to the receiver. However, it is show…
A new coding scheme for general N-node relay networks is presented for unicast, multicast, and broadcast. The proposed distributed decode-forward scheme combines and generalizes Marton coding for single-hop broadcast channels and the Cover-El Gamal partial decode-forward coding scheme for 3-node relay channels. The key idea of the scheme is to precode all the codewords of the entire network at the source by multicoding over multiple blocks. This encoding step allows these codewords to carry partial information of the messages implicitly without complicated rate splitting and routing. This part…
Decode-and-forward (D-F) and compress-and-forward (C-F) are two fundamentally different relay strategies proposed by (Cover and El Gamal, 1979). Individually, either of them has been successfully generalized to multi-relay channels. In this paper, to allow each relay node the freedom of choosing either of the two strategies, we propose a unified framework, where both the D-F and C-F strategies can be employed simultaneously in the network. It turns out that, to fully incorporate the advantages of both the best known D-F and C-F strategies into a unified framework, the major challenge arises as…
Lattice codes are known to achieve capacity in the Gaussian point-to-point channel, achieving the same rates as independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) random Gaussian codebooks. Lattice codes are also known to outperform random codes for certain channel models that are able to exploit their linearity. In this work, we show that lattice codes may be used to achieve the same performance as known i.i.d. Gaussian random coding techniques for the Gaussian relay channel, and show several examples of how this may be combined with the linearity of lattices codes in multi-source relay networks. …
In this letter, a compressed relaying scheme via Huffman and physical-layer network coding (HPNC) is proposed for two-way relay networks with correlated sources (TWRN-CS). In the HPNC scheme, both sources first transmit the correlated raw source messages to the relay simultaneously. The relay performs physical-layer network coding (PNC) on the received symbols, compresses the PNC-coded symbols using Huffman coding, and broadcasts the compressed symbols to both source nodes. Then, each source decodes the other source's messages by using its own messages as side information. Compression rate and…
Noisy network coding is recently proposed for the general multi-source network by Lim, Kim, El Gamal and Chung. This scheme builds on compress-forward (CF) relaying but involves three new ideas, namely no Wyner-Ziv binning, relaxed simultaneous decoding and message repetition. In this paper, using the two-way relay channel as the underlining example, we analyze the impact of each of these ideas on the achievable rate region of relay networks. First, CF without binning but with joint decoding of both the message and compression index can achieve a larger rate region than the original CF scheme …
The fundamental diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the three-node, multi-input, multi-output (MIMO), quasi-static, Rayleigh faded, half-duplex relay channel is characterized for an arbitrary number of antennas at each node and in which opportunistic scheduling (or dynamic operation) of the relay is allowed, i.e., the relay can switch between receive and transmit modes at a channel dependent time. In this most general case, the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff is characterized as a solution to a simple, two-variable optimization problem. This problem is then solved in closed form for special cla…
We consider the role of Wyner-Ziv binning in compress-forward for relay channels. In the one-way relay channel, we analyze a compress-forward scheme without Wyner- Ziv binning but with joint decoding of both the message and compression index. It achieves the same rate as the original compress-forward scheme with binning and successive decoding. Therefore, binning helps reduce decoding complexity by allowing successive decoding, but has no impact on achievable rate for the one-way relay channel. On the other hand, no binning simplifies relay operation. By extending compress-forward without binn…
In this paper, we study a half-duplex two-way relay channel (TWRC) with correlated sources exchanging bidirectional information. In the case, when both sources have the knowledge of correlation statistics, a source compression with physical-layer network coding (SCPNC) scheme is proposed to perform the distributed compression at each source node. When only the relay has the knowledge of correlation statistics, we propose a relay compression with physical-layer network coding (RCPNC) scheme to compress the bidirectional messages at the relay. The closed-form block error rate (BLER) expressions …
Two-way relay network (TWRN) was introduced to realize high-data rate transmission over the wireless frequency-selective channel. However, TWRC requires the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) not only for coherent data detection but also for the self-data removal. This is partial accomplished by training sequence-based linear channel estimation. However, conventional linear estimation techniques neglect anticipated sparsity of multipath channel. Unlike the previous methods, we propose a compressive channel estimation method which exploit the sparse structure and provide significant i…
A three terminal relay system with binary erasure channel (BEC) was considered, in which a source forwarded information to a destination with a relay's "assistance". The nested LDGM (Low-density generator-matrix) -LDPC (low-density parity-check) was designed to realize Compress-and-forward (CF) at the relay. LDGM coding compressed the received signals losslessly and LDPC realized the binning for Slepian-Wolf coding. Firstly a practical coding scheme was proposed to achieve the cut-set bound on the capacity of the system, employing LDPC and Nested LDGM-LDPC codes at the source and relay respect…
We consider the Gaussian interference channel with an intermediate relay as a main building block for cooperative interference networks. On the achievability side, we consider compress-and-forward based strategies. Specifically, a generalized compress-and-forward strategy, where the destinations jointly decode the compression indices and the source messages, is shown to improve upon the compress-and-forward strategy which sequentially decodes the compression indices and source messages, and the recently proposed generalized hash-and-forward strategy. We also construct a nested lattice code bas…
Compute-and-forward (CF) harnesses interference in a wireless networkby allowing relays to compute combinations of source messages. The computed message combinations at relays are correlated, and so directly forwarding these combinations to a destination generally incurs information redundancy and spectrum inefficiency. To address this issue, we propose a novel relay strategy, termed compute-compress-and-forward (CCF). In CCF, source messages are encoded using nested lattice codes constructed on a chain of nested coding and shaping lattices. A key difference of CCF from CF is an extra compress…
We consider the primitive relay channel, where the source sends a message to the relay and to the destination, and the relay helps the communication by transmitting an additional message to the destination via a separate channel. Two well-known coding techniques have been introduced for this setting: decode-and-forward and compress-and-forward. In decode-and-forward, the relay completely decodes the message and sends some information to the destination; in compress-and-forward, the relay does not decode, and it sends a compressed version of the received signal to the destination using Wyner-Zi…
In this paper, we study the Gaussian relay channels in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime with the time-sharing compress-and-forward (CF) scheme, where at each time slot all the nodes keep silent at the first fraction of time and then transmit with CF at a higher peak power in the second fraction. Such a silent vs. active two-phase relay scheme is preferable in the low-SNR regime. With this setup, the upper and lower bounds on the minimum energy per bit required over the relay channel are established under both full-duplex and half-duplex relaying modes. In particular, the lower bound …
Multi-hop relay channels use multiple relay stages, each with multiple relay nodes, to facilitate communication between a source and destination. Previously, distributed space-time codes were proposed to maximize the achievable diversity-multiplexing tradeoff, however, they fail to achieve all the points of the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. In the presence of a low-rate feedback link from the destination to each relay stage and the source, this paper proposes an end-to-end antenna selection (EEAS) strategy as an alternative to distributed space-time codes. The EEAS strategy uses a s…
Transmit signal and bandwidth optimization is considered in multiple-antenna relay channels. Assuming all terminals have channel state information, the cut-set capacity upper bound and decode-and-forward rate under full-duplex relaying are evaluated by formulating them as convex optimization problems. For half-duplex relays, bandwidth allocation and transmit signals are optimized jointly. Moreover, achievable rates based on the compress-and-forward transmission strategy are presented using rate-distortion and Wyner-Ziv compression schemes. It is observed that when the relay is close to the sou…
We consider a relay network with two relays and a feedback link from the receiver to the sender. To obtain the achievability result, we use compress-and-forward and random binning techniques combined with deterministic binning and restricted decoding. Moreover, we use joint decoding technique to decode the relays' compressed information to achieve a higher rate in the receiver.
In this paper, a compress-and-forward scheme with backward decoding is presented for the unicast wireless relay network. The encoding at the source and relay is a generalization of the noisy network coding scheme (NNC). While it achieves the same reliable data rate as noisy network coding scheme, the backward decoding allows for a better decoding complexity as compared to the joint decoding of the NNC scheme. Characterizing the layered decoding scheme is shown to be equivalent to characterizing an information flow for the wireless network. A node-flow for a graph with bisubmodular capacity con…
In this work, a relay channel is studied in which a source encoder communicates with a destination decoder through a number of out-of-band relays that are connected to the decoder through capacity-constrained digital backhaul links. This model is motivated by the uplink of cloud radio access networks. In this scenario, a novel transmission and relaying strategies are proposed in which multi-layer transmission is used, on the one hand, to adaptively leverage the different decoding capabilities of the relays and, on the other hand, to enable hybrid decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forwar…
Compress-forward (CF) relays can improve communication rates even when the relay cannot decode the source signal. Efficient implementation of CF is a topic of contemporary interest, in part because of its potential impact on wireless technologies such as cloud-RAN. There exists a gap between the performance of CF implementations in the high spectral efficiency regime and the corresponding information theoretic achievable rates. We begin by re-framing a dilemma causing this gap, and propose an approach for its mitigation. We utilize trellis coded quantization (TCQ) at the relay together with mu…
A noisy network coding scheme for sending multiple sources over a general noisy network is presented. For multi-source multicast networks, the scheme naturally extends both network coding over noiseless networks by Ahlswede, Cai, Li, and Yeung, and compress-forward coding for the relay channel by Cover and El Gamal to general discrete memoryless and Gaussian networks. The scheme also recovers as special cases the results on coding for wireless relay networks and deterministic networks by Avestimehr, Diggavi, and Tse, and coding for wireless erasure networks by Dana, Gowaikar, Palanki, Hassibi,…
Amplify-and-forward two-way relay network (AFTWRN) was introduced to realize high-data rate transmission over the wireless frequency-selective channel. However, AFTWRC requires the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) not only for coherent data detection but also for the selfdata removal. This is partial accomplished by training sequence-based linear channel estimation. However, conventional linear estimation techniques neglect anticipated sparsity of multipath channel and thus lead to low spectral efficiency which is scarce in the field of wireless communication. Unlike the previous m…
Coding schemes for discrete memoryless multicast networks (DM-MN) with rate-limited feedback from the receivers and relays to the transmitter are proposed. The schemes improve over the noisy network coding proposed by Lim et al.. For the single relay channel with relay-transmitter feedback, our coding schemes recover Gabbai and Bross's results, and strictly improve on noisy network coding, distributed decode-forward coding proposed by Lim et al., and all known lower bounds on the achievable rates proposed for the setup without feedback. The coding schemes are based on block-Markov coding, supe…
In this paper, protocols for the half-duplex relay channel are introduced and performance limits are analyzed. Relay nodes underly an orthogonality constraint, which prohibits simultaneous receiving and transmitting on the same time-frequency resource. Based upon this practical consideration, different protocols are discussed and evaluated using a Gaussian system model. For the considered scenarios compress-and-forward based protocols dominate for a wide range of parameters decode-and-forward protocols. In this paper, a protocol with one compress-and-forward and one decode-and-forward based re…
We analyze the achievable rate of the superposition of block Markov encoding (decode-and-forward) and side information encoding (compress-and-forward) for the three-node Gaussian relay channel. It is generally believed that the superposition can out perform decode-and-forward or compress-and-forward due to its generality. We prove that within the class of Gaussian distributions, this is not the case: the superposition scheme only achieves a rate that is equal to the maximum of the rates achieved by decode-and-forward or compress-and-forward individually. We also present a superposition scheme …
In this paper, we show that the capacity of the three-node Gaussian relay channel can be achieved to within 1 and 2 bit/sec/Hz using compress-and-forward and amplify-and-forward relaying, respectively.
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multiway relay channel is investigated, where L users exchange information at the same rate through a single relay. A new achievable rate region, based on the functional-decode-forward coding strategy, is derived. For the case where there are three or more users, and all nodes transmit at the same power, the capacity is obtained. For the case where the relay power scales with the number of users, it is shown that both compress-forward and functional-decode-forward achieve rates within a constant number of bits of the capacity at all SNR levels; in addit…
Opportunistic analysis has traditionally relied on independence assumptions that break down in many interesting and useful network topologies. This paper develops techniques that expand opportunistic analysis to a broader class of networks, proposes new opportunistic methods for several network geometries, and analyzes them in the high-SNR regime. For each of the geometries studied in the paper, we analyze the opportunistic DMT of several relay protocols, including amplify-and-forward, decode-and-forward, compress-and-forward, non-orthogonal amplify-forward, and dynamic decode-forward. Among t…
We consider a system in which two users communicate with a destination with the help of a half-duplex relay. Based on the compute-and-forward scheme, we develop and evaluate the performance of coding strategies that are of network coding spirit. In this framework, instead of decoding the users' information messages, the destination decodes two integer-valued linear combinations that relate the transmitted codewords. Two decoding schemes are considered. In the first one, the relay computes one of the linear combinations and then forwards it to the destination. The destination computes the other…
We consider a half-duplex diamond relay channel, which consists of one source-destination pair and two relay nodes connected with two-way rate-limited out-of-band conferencing links. Three basic schemes and their achievable rates are studied: For the decode-and-forward (DF) scheme, we obtain the achievable rate by letting the source send a common message and two private messages; for the compress-and-forward (CF) scheme, we exploit the conferencing links to help with the compression of the received signals, or to exchange messages intended for the second hop to introduce certain cooperation; f…
We investigate the special case of diamond relay comprising a Gaussian channel with identical frequency response from the user to the relays and fronthaul links with limited rate from the relays to the destination. We use the oblivious compress and forward (CF) with distributed compression and decode and forward (DF) where each relay decodes the whole message and sends half of its bits to the destination. We derive achievable rate by using time-sharing between DF and CF. It is proved that optimal CF-DF time sharing is advantageous over superposition of CF and DF. The optimal time sharing propo…
The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the dynamic decode-and-forward protocol is characterized for the half-duplex three-terminal (m,k,n)-relay channel where the source, relay and the destination terminals have m, k and n antennas, respectively. It is obtained as a solution to a simple, two-variable, convex optimization problem and this problem is solved in closed form for special classes of relay channels, namely, the (1,k,1) relay channel, the (n,1,n) relay channel and the (2,k,2) relay channel. Moreover, the tradeoff curves for a certain class of relay channels, such as the (m,k,n>k) chann…
In this paper, we study the two-way relay channel with energy harvesting nodes. In particular, we find transmission policies that maximize the sum-throughput for two-way relay channels when the relay does not employ a data buffer. The relay can perform decode-and-forward, compress-and-forward, compute-and-forward or amplify-and-forward relaying. Furthermore, we consider throughput improvement by dynamically choosing relaying strategies, resulting in hybrid relaying strategies. We show that an iterative generalized directional water-filling algorithm solves the offline throughput maximization p…
The problem of dual-hop transmission from a source to a destination via two parallel full-duplex relays in block Rayleigh fading environment is investigated. All nodes in the network are assumed to be oblivious to their forward channel gains; however, they have perfect information about their backward channel gains. The focus of this paper is on simple, efficient, and practical relaying schemes to increase the expected-rate at the destination. For this purpose, various combinations of relaying protocols and the broadcast approach (multi-layer coding) are proposed. For the decode-forward (DF) r…
The L-user additive white Gaussian noise multi-way relay channel is considered, where multiple users exchange information through a single relay at a common rate. Existing coding strategies, i.e., complete-decode-forward and compress-forward are shown to be bounded away from the cut-set upper bound at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). It is known that the gap between the compress-forward rate and the capacity upper bound is a constant at high SNR, and that between the complete-decode-forward rate and the upper bound increases with SNR at high SNR. In this paper, a functional-decode-forward co…
This paper considers the information bottleneck (IB) problem of a Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) channel with an oblivious relay. The relay is constrained to operate without knowledge of the codebooks, i.e., it performs oblivious processing. Moreover, due to the bottleneck constraint, it is impossible for the relay to inform the destination node of the perfect channel state information (CSI) in each channel realization. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we first provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node can get the perfect CSI at no cost. Then, we provide …
Capacity bounds are studied for the multiple-antenna complex Gaussian relay channel with t1 transmitting antennas at the sender, r2 receiving and t2 transmitting antennas at the relay, and r3 receiving antennas at the receiver. It is shown that the partial decode-forward coding scheme achieves within min(t1,r2) bits from the cutset bound and at least one half of the cutset bound, establishing a good approximate expression of the capacity. A similar additive gap of min(t1 + t2, r3) + r2 bits is shown to be achieved by the compress-forward coding scheme.
This paper studies the relaying strategies and the approximate capacity of the classic three-node Gaussian relay channel, but where the noises at the relay and at the destination are correlated. It is shown that the capacity of such a relay channel can be achieved to within a constant gap of $\hf \log_2 3 =0.7925$ bits using a modified version of the noisy network coding strategy, where the quantization level at the relay is set in a correlation dependent way. As a corollary, this result establishes that the conventional compress-and-forward scheme also achieves to within a constant gap to the…
We propose two coding schemes combining decode-forward (DF) and noisy network coding (NNC) with different flavors. The first is a combined DF-NNC scheme for the one-way relay channel which includes both DF and NNC as special cases by performing rate splitting, partial block Markov encoding and NNC. The second combines two different DF strategies and layered NNC for the two-way relay channel. One DF strategy performs coherent block Markov encoding at the source at the cost of power splitting at the relay, the other performs independent source and relay encoding but with full relay power, and la…
This paper studies Gaussian Two-Way Relay Channel where two communication nodes exchange messages with each other via a relay. It is assumed that all nodes operate in half duplex mode without any direct link between the communication nodes. A compress-and-forward relaying strategy using nested lattice codes is first proposed. Then, the proposed scheme is improved by performing a layered coding : a common layer is decoded by both receivers and a refinement layer is recovered only by the receiver which has the best channel conditions. The achievable rates of the new scheme are characterized and …
This paper investigates the Diversity Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) of the generalized quantize-and-forward (GQF) relaying scheme over the slow fading half-duplex multiple-access relay channel (HD-MARC). The compress-and-forward (CF) scheme has been shown to achieve the optimal DMT when the channel state information (CSI) of the relay-destination link is available at the relay. However, having the CSI of relay-destination link at relay is not always possible due to the practical considerations of the wireless system. In contrast, in this work, the DMT of the GQF scheme is derived without relay-d…
Relay Assisted F/TDMA Ad Hoc Networks: Node Classification, Power Allocation and Relaying Strategies
In this paper, we consider a parallel relay network where two relays cooperatively help a source transmit to a destination. We assume the source and the destination nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Three basic schemes and their achievable rates are studied: Decode-and-Forward (DF), Amplify-and-Forward (AF), and Compress-and-Forward (CF). For the DF scheme, the source transmits two private signals, one for each relay, where dirty paper coding (DPC) is used between the two private streams, and a common signal for both relays. The relays make efficient use of the common information to i…
