Charged Higgs boson may be produced at hadron colliders via the decay of top quarks. At the LHC, The large production cross section of top quarks pairs will make it one of the earliest channels allowing to search for physics beyond the standard model. Assuming the decay $H^+ \to τ^+ν$, previous searches have so far considered only hadronic tau decays. Here we show that by using appropriate kinematical variables (transverse mass observables), leptonic tau decays can be used as well, for both observing and possibly measuring the mass of the charged Higgs boson. This can increase the overall experimental sensitivity to charged Higgs bosons at hadron colliders.
In the past few years, the interest to collider searches for direct dark matter (DM) production has been growing exponentially. A variety of "Mono-X" signatures have been considered, where X stands for a probe particle recoiling against DM particles, which allows for the event to be triggerable. So far, the analysis of these signatures has been largely carried out in the framework of effective field theory (EFT), which allows for a comparison of the collider searches with searches in direct detection experiments. Unfortunately, as it has been recently pointed out by a number of authors, the EF…
Colliders, among the most successful tools of particle physics, have revealed much about matter. This review describes how colliders contribute to the search for particle dark matter, focusing on the highest-energy collider currently in operation, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. In the absence of hints about the character of interactions between dark matter and standard matter, this review emphasizes what could be observed in the near future, presents the main experimental challenges, and discusses how collider searches fit into the broader field of dark matter searches. Finally, it h…
We present projections for future collider searches for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks. Such production channels give rise to final states with missing transverse energy and one or more b-jets. Limits are given assuming an effective scalar operator coupling dark matter to quarks, where the dedicated analysis discussed here improves significantly over a generic monojet analysis. We give updated results for an anticipated high-luminosity LHC run at 14 TeV and for a 33 TeV hadron collider.
We review the experimental searches for new particles in the dijet mass spectrum conducted at the CERN SppS, the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The theory of the QCD background and new particle signals is reviewed, with emphasis on the choices made by the experiments to model the background and signal. The experimental techniques, data, and results of dijet resonance searches at hadron colliders over the last quarter century are described and compared. Model independent and model specific limits on new particles decaying to dijets are reviewed, and a detailed c…
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs, $χ$) are candidates for Dark Matter. WIMP searches at lepton colliders are complementary to searches at hadron colliders and direct and indirect detection, since they directly probe the coupling to electrons which a priori is independent of the coupling to hadrons. Like at hadron colliders, WIMP pair production can be observed via an additional tag particle, in particular a photon from initial state radiation ($e^+e^-\rightarrowχχγ$). With this technique WIMP masses to nearly half the centre-of-mass energy can be probed. Polarised beams are essentia…
Searches for dark matter at colliders typically involve signatures with energetic initial-state radiation without visible recoil particles. Searches for mono-jet or mono-photon signatures have yielded powerful constraints on dark matter interactions with Standard Model particles. We extend this to the mono-Z signature and reinterpret an ATLAS analysis of events with a Z boson and missing transverse momentum to derive constraints on dark matter interaction mass scale and nucleon cross sections in the context of effective field theories describing dark matter which interacts via heavy mediator p…
Spin-0 singlets arise in well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. Their lifetime determines the best search strategies at hadron and lepton colliders. To cover a large range of singlet decay lengths, we investigate bounds from Higgs decays into a pair of singlets, considering signatures of invisible decays, displaced and delayed jets, and coupling fits of untagged decays. We examine the generic scalar singlet and the relaxion, and derive a matching as well as qualitative differences between them. For each model, we discuss its natural parameter space and the searches probing it.
Identification of charmonium states at hadron colliders has mostly been limited to leptonic decays of the J/ψ. In this paper we present and algorithm to identify hadronic decays of charmonium states (J/ψ, ψ(2S), χ_{c0,1,2}) which make up the large majority of all decays. The algorithm is able to identify hadronic $J/ψ$ decays with an efficiency of 36\% while suppressing a background of quark and gluon jets by a factor 100.
Experiments at particle colliders have reached center of mass energies well above 100 GeV, equivalent to temperatures which existed shortly after the big bang. These experiments, testing the initial conditions of the universe have, with great precision, established the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In contrast, the existence of the Higgs boson and perhaps Supersymmetry remain speculative, as todays searches have failed to find signs of their existence. However, the next generation of high energy collider experiments and especially CERN's 14 TeV LHC, expected to start operation in the yea…
We study direct searches of additional Higgs bosons in multi-top-quarks events at the LHC Run-II, its luminosity upgraded version with 3000 fb$^{-1}$, and the International Linear Collider (ILC) with the collision energy of 1 TeV. Additional Higgs bosons are predicted in all kinds of extended Higgs sectors, and their detection at collider experiments is a clear signature of the physics beyond the standard model. We consider two Higgs doublet models with the discrete symmetry as benchmark models. If these additional Higgs bosons are heavy enough, the decay modes including top quarks can be domi…
Plots summarizing the constraints on Dark Matter models can help visualize synergies between different searches for the same kind of experiment, as well as between different experiments. In this whitepaper, we present an update to the European Strategy Briefing Book plots, from the perspective of collider searches within the Dark Matter at the Energy Frontier (EF10) Snowmass Topical Group, starting from inputs from future collider facilities. We take as a starting point the plots currently made for LHC searches using benchmark models recommended by the Dark Matter Working Group, also used for …
This review presents a selection of the final results of searches for various exotic physics phenomena in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 and 8 TeV delivered by the LHC and collected with the ATLAS and CMS detectors in 2011 (5 fb-1) and in the first part of 2012 (4 fb-1). Searches for large extra dimensions, gravitons, microscopic black holes, long-lived particles, dark matter, and leptoquarks are presented in this report. No sign of new physics beyond the Standard Model has been observed so far. In the majority of the cases these searches set the most stringent limits to date on the afo…
Rare B hadron decays provide an excellent test bench for the Standard Model and can probe new physics models. We review the experimental progress of the searches for rare leptonic B decays ($b\rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $b\rightarrow s \ell^+ \ell^-$) at LHC and Tevatron experiments.
This review covers results of searches for new elementary particles that decay into boson pairs (dibosons), performed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at 7-, 8-, and 13-TeV center-of-mass energy until the year 2017. The available experimental results of the analysis of final states including most of the possible two-object combinations of W and Z bosons, photons, Higgs bosons, and gluons place stringent constraints on a variety of theoretical ideas that extend the standard model, pushing into the multi-TeV region the s…
This review summarizes the state of the art in searches for supersymmetry at colliders on the eve of the LHC era. Supersymmetry is unique among extensions of the standard model in being motivated by naturalness, dark matter, and force unification, both with and without gravity. At the same time, weak-scale supersymmetry encompasses a wide range of experimental signals that are also found in many other frameworks. We recall the motivations for supersymmetry and review the various models and their distinctive features. We then comprehensively summarize searches for neutral and charged Higgs boso…
Recent experimental and theoretical results presented in the working group "Parton densities from DIS and hadron colliders to LHC" at the DIS2010 workshop are summarized in this contribution.
In this White Paper we present and discuss a concrete proposal for the consistent interpretation of Dark Matter searches at colliders and in direct detection experiments. Based on a specific implementation of simplified models of vector and axial-vector mediator exchanges, this proposal demonstrates how the two search strategies can be compared on an equal footing.
Despite the fact that dark matter constitutes one of the cornerstones of the standard cosmological paradigm, its existence has so far only been inferred from astronomical observations and its microscopic nature remains elusive. Theoretical arguments suggest that dark matter might be connected to the symmetry-breaking mechanism of the electroweak interactions or of other symmetries extending the Standard Model of particle physics. The resulting Higgs bosons, including the $125 \, {\rm GeV}$ spin-0 particle discovered recently at the Large Hadron Collider therefore represent a unique tool to sea…
In this contribution we review the status of inclusive jet cross sections at hadron colliders in perturbative QCD, studying in particular the renormalisation and factorisation scale dependence of the one-jet inclusive cross section at NNLO.
We review the methods which have been proposed for measuring masses of new particles at the Large Hadron Collider paying particular attention to the kinematical techniques suitable for extracting mass information when invisible particles are expected.
The Monte Carlo integrator HAWK provides precision predictions for Higgs production at hadron colliders in vector-boson fusion and Higgs strahlung, i.e. in production processes where the Higgs boson is Attached to WeaK bosons. The fully differential predictions include the full QCD and electroweak next-to-leading-order corrections. Results are computed as integrated cross sections and as binned distributions for important hadron-collider observables.
In this whitepaper, we consider the model of heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) as an example to explore the potential of new physics searches at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We propose two broad categories of search strategies depending on the HNL lifetime: direct searches for the prompt decay of HNLs with a short lifetime and displaced vertex searches for long-lived ones. After identifying the most promising signals and the corresponding backgrounds, we perform a detailed simulation to estimate the sensitivity of the EIC to HNLs, accounting for detector thresholds, resolutions, and geometric a…
Experimental tests of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) find excellent agreement with its predictions. Since the original formation of the SM, experiments have provided little guidance regarding the explanations of phenomena outside the SM, such as the baryon asymmetry and dark matter. Nor have we understood the aesthetic and theoretical problems of the SM, despite years of searching for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) at particle colliders. Some BSM particles can be produced at colliders yet evade being discovered, if the reconstruction and analysis procedures not matched to…
We present pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions for the cross section for the production of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in association with a high-p_T hadronic jet, calculated in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We discuss the theoretical predictions for the differential cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider and the Tevatron for the most common benchmark scenarios.
We explore the phenomenology of an extra U(1) gauge boson which primarily couples to standard model gauge bosons. We classify all possible parity-odd couplings up to dimension 6 operators. We then study the prospects for the detection of such a boson at the LHC and show that the electroweak decay channels lead to very clean signals, allowing us to probe couplings well into the TeV scale.
The standard model of particle physics is an extremely successful theory of fundamental interactions, but it has many known limitations. It is therefore widely believed to be an effective field theory that describes interactions near the TeV scale. A plethora of strategies exist to extend the standard model, many of which contain predictions of new particles or dynamics that could manifest in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As of now, none have been observed, and much of the available phase space for natural solutions to outstanding problems is excluded. If new phy…
In this paper we study the possible searches at colliders using Vector Boson Fusion topology in the context of Simplified Models signatures. We examine the possible physics reach of these searches with regard to monojet-type searches, and determine how these two signatures are complementary.
Current absolute branching fractions of $Λ_c^+$ and $D_s^+$ mesons are limiting the determination of important measurements. They have only been measured at $e^+e^-$ colliders. Here techniques for measuring them at hadron colliders are discussed. The precision determination of $Λ_c^+\to p K^-π^+$ seems possible with current data, however the corresponding determination of $D_s^+\to K^+K^-π^+$ will require more integrated luminosity.
We investigate features of the sterile neutrinos in the presence of a light gauge boson $X^μ$ that couples to the neutrino sector. The novel bounds on the active-sterile neutrino mixings $| U_{\ell 4} |^2$, especially for tau flavor ($l = τ$), from various collider and fixed target experiments are explored. Also, taking into account the additional decay channel of the sterile neutrino into a light gauge boson ($ν_4 \to ν_\ell e^+ e^-$), we explore and constrain a parameter space for low energy excess in neutrino oscillation experiments.
The next-generation high-energy facilities, the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the prospective $e^+e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC), are expected to unravel new structures of matter and forces from the electroweak scale to the TeV scale. In this report we review the complementary role of LHC and ILC in drawing a comprehensive and high-precision picture of the mechanism breaking the electroweak symmetries and generating mass, and the unification of forces in the frame of supersymmetry.
Searches for extra spatial dimensions remain among the most popular new directions in our quest for physics beyond the Standard Model. High-energy collider experiments of the current decade should be able to find an ultimate answer to the question of their existence in a variety of models. Until the start of the LHC in a few years, the Tevatron will remain the key player in this quest. In this paper, we review the most recent results from the Tevatron on searches for large, 1/TeV-size, and Randall-Sundrum extra spatial dimensions, which have reached a new level of sensitivity and currently pro…
Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermil…
We present the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections for top-quark pair production in association with an additional jet at hadron colliders, using the modified minimal subtraction scheme to renormalize the top-quark mass. The results are compared to measurements at the Large Hadron Collider run I. In particular, we determine the top-quark running mass from a fit of the theoretical results presented here to the LHC data.
We present pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions for the cross section for the production of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in association with a high-p_T hadronic jet, calculated in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We discuss the theoretical predictions for the differential cross sections at the Large Hadron Collider and the Tevatron. In particular, we present the differences in the distributions compared to the Standard Model.
We present here the results for Higgs and Supersymmetry prospective searches at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that for one year at high luminosity, Standard Model and MSSM Higgs should be observed within the theoretically expected mass range. MSUGRA and restricted phenomenological MSSM searches lead to discovery of up to 2.5 TeV squarks and gluinos.
The investigation of lepton-hadron and photon-hadron collisions at TeV scale is crucial both to clarify the strong interaction dynamics from nuclei to quark-parton level and for adequate interpretation of experimental data from future hadron colliders (LHC and VLHC). In this presentation different TeV scale lepton-hadron and photon-hadron collider proposals (such as THERA, LEP-LHC, QCD Explorer etc) are discussed. The advantages of linac-ring type colliders has been shown comparatively.
In this talk, I discuss some aspects of Higgs searches at future colliders, particularly comparing and contrasting the capabilities of LHC and Next Linear Collider (NLC), including the aspects of Higgs searches in supersymmetric theories. After this, I will discuss how the search and study of sparticles other than the Higgs can give information about the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM).
We investigate the scenario where the dark matter only interacts with the charged leptons in the standard model via a neutral vector mediator $Z'$. Such a scenario with a 430 GeV dark matter can fit the recent positron fluxes observed by the AMS-02 Collaborations, with the reasonable boost factors. We study the possibility of searching such leptophilic $Z'$ via its lepton final states and invisible decay modes at the future electron-positron colliders, such as the International Linear Collider (ILC) and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). We find that for the benchmark models with $Z'$ mass fr…
We study the Electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism with extra Electroweak symmetry breaking contributions (eEWSB) that are bounded by the Fermi constant and limits from the related collider searches. The eEWSB is helpful to build a different zero temperature vacuum structure from the Standard Model (SM), and therefore leads to different Electroweak phase transition patterns at the early Universe. We investigate the collider search prospects and gravitational waves (GW) predictions from the strongly firstly order phase transition (SFOEWPT) in this scenario. The Higgs pair searches at lepton c…
We examine the utility of employing polarized lepton (electron and muon) beams to perform indirect searches for scalar leptoquarks. We find that polarization can extend the reach in excluding leptoquark masses for both $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ machines. Polarization can also provide a diagnostic tool for determining leptoquark couplings.
Construction of future electron-positron colliders (or dedicated electron linac) and muon colliders (or dedicated muon ring) tangential to Future Circular Collider (FCC) will give opportunity to utilize highest energy proton and nucleus beams for lepton-hadron and photon-hadron collisions. Luminosity values of FCC based ep, \mup, eA, \muA, \gammap and \gammaA colliders are estimated. Multi-TeV center of mass energy ep colliders based on the FCC and linear colliders (LC) are considered in detail. Parameters of upgraded versions of the FCC proton beam are determined to optimize luminosity of ele…
I review recent developments in extensions of the Standard Model that address the question of electroweak symmetry breaking and discuss how these theories can be tested at future colliders.
While it is natural for supersymmetric particles to be well within the mass range of the large hadron collider, it is possible that the sparticle masses could be very heavy. Signatures are examined at a very high energy hadron collider and an very high luminosity option for the Large Hadron Collider in such scenarios.
Many types of new physics can lead to contact interaction-like modifications in $e^+e^-$ processes below direct production threshold. This report summarizes a survey of contact interaction search reaches at the Linear Collider as functions of energy, luminosity and positron polarization. The various tradeoffs between these quantities in such searches are examined in detail.
In this review, we discuss recent developments in both the theory and the experimental searches of magnetic monopoles in past, current and future colliders and in the Cosmos. The theoretical models include, apart from the standard Grand Unified Theories, extensions of the Standard Model that admit magnetic monopole solutions with finite energy and masses that can be as light as a few TeV. Specifically, we discuss, among other scenarios, modified Cho-Maison monopoles and magnetic monopoles in (string-inspired, higher derivative) Born-Infeld extensions of the hypercharge sector of the Standard M…
We present here the summary of the "Electroweak and Searches in DIS and Hadron Colliders" working group activities at the DIS 2010 conference. The theory contributions will be presented first, followed by the experimental ones. The experimental results include measurements from the Tevatron (CDF and \DO) and HERA (H1 and ZEUS) experiments, and studies from the LHC (ATLAS and CMS). Results from the B-factories (BaBar and Belle) and from NA62 are also summarised.
The LHC / LC Study Group investigates how analyses at the LHC could profit from results obtained at a future Linear Collider and vice versa, leading to mutual benefits for the physics program at both machines. Some examples of results obtained within this working group so far concerning searches for new physics are briefly summarised.
This talk gives a brief introduction to open questions in jet physics and QCD which come to the fore in the high-luminosity regime characterizing the upcoming phase of the Large Hadron Collider and future hadron colliders.
We give a brief overview of searches at TeV e^+e^- colliders for new particles that arise in models with extended gauge sectors. We concentrate on some recent developments in $W'$ searches and on leptoquark searches. We also briefly mention $Z'$ searches.
We study the potential of neutralino dark matter searches and SUSY particle production at colliders in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We show the effects of a non universal gluino mass parameter. The future experiments will be a stringent probe of the low energy MSSM and neutralino dark matter scenario. The deeper informations on both supersymmetry and astrophysics hypothesis will be obtained by correlation of the different signals or absence of signal.
We point out that a study of event shapes at hadron colliders allows to explore novel aspects of QCD. These studies are today made easier by the development of a program which automates the resummation.
There exists a world--wide consensus for a future $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider in the energy range between $\sqrt{s}=500--1000$ GeV as the next large facility in HEP. The Linear Collider has a large physics potential for the discovery of new physics beyond the Standard Model and for precision studies of the Standard Model itself. It is well suited to complement and extend the physics program of the LHC. The use of polarised beams at a Linear Collider will be one of the powerful tools. In this paper some highlights of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model at a future Linear Collider with p…
