In examining the relationship between the number of points over $\mathbb{F}_p$ on certain Calabi-Yau manifolds and hypergeometric series which correspond to a particular period of the manifold, Rodriguez-Villegas identified 22 possible supercongruences. We provide a framework of congruences covering all 22 cases. Using this framework we prove one of the outstanding supercongruence conjectures between a special value of a truncated ordinary hypergeometric series and the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a modular form. In the course of this work we also establish two new binomial coefficient-harmonic sum identities.
Guo and Zudilin [Adv. Math. 346 (2019), 329--358] developed an analytical method, called `creative microscoping', to prove many supercongruences by establishing their $q$-analogues. In this paper, we apply this method to give a $q$-Dwork-type generalization of Rodriguez-Villegas' supercongruences, which was recently conjectured by Guo and Zudilin.
In 2003, Rodriguez-Villegas conjectured four supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series for certain modular K3 surfaces, which were gradually proved by several authors. Motivated by some supercongruences on combinatorial numbers such as Apéry numbers and Domb numbers, we establish some new supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series, which extend the four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences.
In examining the relationship between the number of points over $\mathbb{F}_p$ on certain Calabi-Yau manifolds and hypergeometric series which correspond to a particular period of the manifold, Rodriguez-Villegas identified numerically 22 possible supercongruences. We prove one of the outstanding supercongruence conjectures between a special value of a truncated generalized hypergeometric series and the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a modular form.
We study different q-analogues and generalizations of the ex-conjectures of Rodriguez-Villegas. For example, for any odd prime p, we show that the known congruence \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{{2k\choose k}^2}{16^k} \equiv (-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}\pmod{p^2} has the following two nice q-analogues with [p]=1+q+...+q^{p-1}: \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(q;q^2)_k^2}{(q^2;q^2)_k^2}q^{(1+\varepsilon)k} &\equiv (-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}q^{\frac{(p^2-1)\varepsilon}{4}}\pmod{[p]^2}, where (a;q)_0=1, (a;q)_n=(1-a)(1-aq)...(1-aq^{n-1}) for n=1,2,..., and \varepsilon=\pm1. Several related conjectures are also proposed.
The conjecture due to Bertrand and Rodriguez Villegas asserts that the 1-norm of the nonzero element in an exterior power of the units of a number field has a certain lower bound. We prove this conjecture for the exterior square case when the number field is a real multi-quadratic Galois extension of any degree of the rationals.
Rodriguez-Villegas conjectured four supercongruences associated to certain elliptic curves, which were first confirmed by Mortenson by using the Gross-Koblitz formula. In this paper, we aim to prove four supercongruences between two truncated hypergeometric series ${}_2F_1$. This generalizes these four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences.
We establish four supercongruences between truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series involving $p$-adic Gamma functions, which extend some of the Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences.
For any odd prime p we obtain q-analogues of Van Hamme's supercongruence: $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\choose k}^3\frac{1}{64^k} \equiv 0 \pmod{p^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, $$ and Rodriguez-Villegas' Beukers-like supercongruences involving products of three binomial coefficients. For example, we prove that \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}} {2k\brack k}_{q^2}^3 \frac{q^{2k}}{(-q^2;q^2)_k^2 (-q;q)_{2k}^2} &\equiv 0\pmod{[p]^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\brack k}_{q^3}\frac{(q;q^3)_k (q^{2};q^3)_{k} q^{3k} }{ (q^{6};q^{6})_k^…
We establish some supercongruences for the truncated ${}_2F_1$ and ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series involving the $p$-adic Gamma functions. Some of these results extend the four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series. The corresponding conjectural supercongruences modulo $p^3$ are also proposed for further research.
Let L be a number field and let E be any subgroup of the units O_L^* of L. If rank(E) = 1, Lehmer's conjecture predicts that the height of any non-torsion element of E is bounded below by an absolute positive constant. If rank(E) = rank(O_L^*), Zimmert proved a lower bound on the regulator of E which grows exponentially with [L:Q]. Fernando Rodriguez Villegas made a conjecture in 2002 that "interpolates" between these two extremes of rank. Here we prove a high-rank case of this conjecture. Namely, it holds if L contains a subfield K for which [L:K] >> [K:Q] and E contains the kernel of the nor…
By using the Rodriguez-Villegas-Mortenson supercongruences, we prove four supercongruences on sums involving binomial coefficients, which were originally conjectured by Sun. We also confirm a related conjecture of Guo on integer-valued polynomials.
We establish two binomial coefficient--generalized harmonic sum identities using the partial fraction decomposition method. These identities are a key ingredient in the proofs of numerous supercongruences. In particular, in other works of the author, they are used to establish modulo $p^k$ ($k>1$) congruences between truncated generalized hypergeometric series, and a function which extends Greene's hypergeometric function over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. A specialization of one of these congruences is used to prove an outstanding conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas which relates a trun…
We prove three more general supercongruences between truncated hypergeometric series and $p$-adic Gamma function from which some known supercongruences follow. A supercongruence conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas and proved by E. Mortenson using the theory of finite field hypergeometric series follows from one of our more general supercongruences. We also prove a supercongruence for ${_7}F_6$ truncated hypergeometric series which is similar to a supercongruence proved by L. Long and R. Ramakrishna.
In 2003, Rodriguez Villegas conjectured 14 supercongruences between hypergeometric functions arising as periods of certain families of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds and the Fourier coefficients of weight 4 modular forms. Uniform proofs of these supercongruences were given in 2019 by Long, Tu, Yui, and Zudilin. Using p-adic techniques of Dwork, they reduce the original supercongruences to related congruences which involve only the hypergeometric series. We generalize their techniques to consider six further supercongruences recently conjectured by Long. In particular we prove an analogous version…
In 2017, Ono, Rolen, and Sprung [ORS17] answered problems of Manin [Man16] by defining zeta-polynomials $Z_f(s)$ for even weight newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N)$; these polynomials can be defined by applying the "Rodriguez-Villegas transform" to the period polynomial of $f$. It is known that these zeta-polynomials satisfy a functional equation $Z_f(s) = \pm Z_f(1-s)$ and they have a conjectural arithmetic-geometric interpretation. Here, we give analogous results for a slightly larger class of polynomials which are also defined using the Rodriguez-Villegas transform.
We establish the supercongruences for the fourteen rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds over $\mathbb Q$ conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas in 2003. Our first method is based on Dwork's theory of $p$-adic unit roots and it allows us to establish the supercongruences between the truncated hypergeometric series and the corresponding unit roots for ordinary primes. The other method makes use of the theory of hypergeometric motives, in particular, adapts the techniques from the recent work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on finite hypergeometric sums over $\mathbb Q$. Essential ingredients in e…
We study congruences involving truncated hypergeometric series of the form_rF_{r-1}(1/2,...,1/2;1,...,1;λ)_{(mp^s-1)/2} = \sum_{k=0}^{(mp^s-1)/2} ((1/2)_k/k!)^r λ^k where p is a prime and m, s, r are positive integers. These truncated hypergeometric series are related to the arithmetic of a family of algebraic varieties and exhibit Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer type congruences. In particular, when r=3, they are related to K3 surfaces. For special values of λ, with s=1 and r=3, our congruences are stronger than what can be predicted by the theory of formal groups because of the presence of ellipti…
We define a function which extends Gaussian hypergeometric series to the $p$-adic setting. This new function allows results involving Gaussian hypergeometric series to be extended to a wider class of primes. We demonstrate this by providing various congruences between the function and truncated classical hypergeometric series. These congruences provide a framework for proving the supercongruence conjectures of Rodriguez-Villegas.
