We consider the influence of electric field gradients on the phase behavior of nonpolar binary mixtures. Small fields give rise to smooth composition profiles, whereas large enough fields lead to a phase-separation transition. The critical field for demixing as well as the equilibrium phase separation interface are given as a function of the various system parameters. We show how the phase diagram in the temperature-composition plane is affected by electric fields, assuming a linear or nonlinear constitutive relations for the dielectric constant. Finally, we discuss the unusual case where the interface appears far from any bounding surface.

We study a binary mixture of polar chiral (counterclockwise or clockwise) active particles in a two-dimensional box with periodic boundary conditions. Beside the excluded volume interactions between particles, particles are also subject to the polar velocity alignment. From the extensive Brownian dynamics simulations, it is found that the particle configuration (mixing or demixing) is determined by the competition between the chirality difference and the polar velocity alignment. When the chirality difference competes with the polar velocity alignment, the clockwise particles aggregate in one …
We show by inherent structure (IS) analysis that the sharp composition dependent breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation correlates surprisingly well with an equally sharp non-monotonic variation in the average inherent structure (IS) energy of these mixtures. Further IS analysis reveals the existence of a unique ground state, stabilized by the optimum number of H-bonds at this composition. The surprisingly sharp turnaround behaviour observed in the effective hydrodynamic radius can be traced back to the formation of low energy equilibrium structures at specific compositions.
We solve the site-site Ornstein-Zernike equation using the Percus-Yevick closure for binary hard-sphere mixture. We calculate an excess chemical potential for the mixture's diameter ratios of 0.3, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.9, and at packing fraction of 0.49 using the analytical expression. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those in the literature.
It has been known that the binary replica liquid theory (RLT) is inconsistent with its one-component counterpart; In the limit that all atoms are identical, the configurational entropy and thus the glass transition point calculated by the binary RLT differ from those obtained by the one-component RLT. More specifically, an extra composition-dependent term, or the mixing entropy, remains finite in the configurational entropy computed by the binary RLT. In this Short Note, we reformulate the RLT in order to resolve this problem.
We derive the form of reciprocal generalized radiative transfer (RGRT) that includes the Levermore-Pomraning attenuation law for paths leaving a deterministic origin. The resulting model describes linear transport within multi-dimensional stochastic binary mixtures with Markovian mixing statistics and nonstochastic albedo and phase function. The derivation includes a new attenuation law and related free-path distribution between collisions, which was previously estimated using a Monte Carlo approach. We also show that previous stationary descriptions of binary mixtures with binomial mixing sta…
We use Onsager theory and the local density approximation to study sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium density profiles of binary mixtures of thick and thin hard rods. We construct stacking diagrams for three diameter ratios, and find that even a simple spindle-shaped phase diagram with only isotropic-nematic demixing can lead to counter-intuitive stacking sequences such as an isotropic phase sandwiched between two nematic phases. For the most complex phase diagram considered here, we find sixteen distinct stacking sequences, including several with five sedimented layers. By adding sedimentati…
Using a strategy that may be applied in theory or in experiments, we identify the regime in which a model binary soft matter mixture forms quasicrystals. The system is described using classical density functional theory combined with integral equation theory. Quasicrystal formation requires particle ordering with two characteristic lengthscales in certain particular ratios. How the lengthscales are related to the form of the pair interactions is reasonably well understood for one component systems, but less is known for mixtures. In our model mixture of big and small colloids confined to an in…

Rev. Lett. 65,2402(1990)]。结果表明,所观察到的奇异性,特别是在共存直径,也应该是可检测的实验。
2,6-lutidine molecules mix with water at high and low temperatures but in a wide intermediate temperature range a 2,6-lutidine/water mixture exhibits a miscibility gap. We constructed and validated an atomistic model for 2,6-lutidine and performed molecular dynamics simulations of 2,6-lutidine/water mixture at different temperatures. We determined the part of demixing curve with the lower critical point. The lower critical point extracted from our data is located close to the experimental one. The estimates for critical exponents obtained from our simulations are in a good agreement with the v…
We propose a method for describing a phase behavior of a system consisting of particles of two sorts. The interaction of each species is described by interaction potentials containing the repulsive and attractive components. Asymmetry is ensured by different values of the interaction potentials of each sort. The grand partition function of a binary mixture is calculated in the zero-mode approximation A line of critical points, which correspond to different proportions of the components, is calculated for specific values of parameters of the interaction potential. We have obtained an equation t…
We present Monte Carlo (MC) simulation studies of phase separation in binary (AB) mixtures with bond-disorder that is introduced in two different ways: (i) at randomly selected lattice sites and (ii) at regularly selected sites. The Ising model with spin exchange (Kawasaki) dynamics represents the segregation kinetics in conserved binary mixtures. We find that the dynamical scaling changes significantly by varying the number of disordered sites in the case where bond-disorder is introduced at the randomly selected sites. On the other hand, when we introduce the bond-disorder in a regular fashi…
The Jeans stability criterium for gravitational collapse is examined for the case of an inert binary mixture in local equilibrium, neglectinq dissipative effects. The corresponding transport equations are established using kinetic theory within the Euler regime approximation. It is shown that the corresponding dispertion relation is modified, yielding corrections to the Jeans wave number. This formalism that can be generalized for several interesting cases involving dissipation.
We propose a model describing the phase behavior of two-component membranes consisting of binary mixtures of electrically charged and neutral lipids. We take into account the structural phase transition (main-transition) of the hydrocarbon chains, and investigate the interplay between this phase transition and the lateral phase separation. The presence of charged lipids significantly affects the phase behavior of the multi-component membrane. Due to the conservation of lipid molecular volume, the main-transition temperature of charged lipids is lower than that of neutral ones. Furthermore, as …
We have calculated the values of critical packing fractions for the mixtures of symmetric non-additive hard disks. An interesting feature of the model is the fact that the internal energy is zero and the phase transitions are entropically driven. A cluster algorithm for Monte Carlo simulations in a semigrand ensemble was used. The finite size scaling analysis was employed to compute the critical packing fractions for infinite systems with high accuracy for a range of non-additivity parameters wider than in the previous studies.
