We shall present a new strategy for handling mean field limits of quantum mechanical systems. The new method is simple and effective. It is simple, because it translates the idea behind the mean field description of a many particle quantum system directly into a mathematical algorithm. It is effective because the strategy yields with lesser effort better results than previously achieved. As an instructional example we treat a simple model for the time dependent Hartree equation which we derive under more general conditions than what has been considered so far. Other mean field scalings leading e.g. to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can also be treated.
A simple and general derivation of Josephson formulae for the tunneling currents is presented on the basis of Sewell's general formulation of superconductivity in use of off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO).
We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian in a mean-field limit where many bosonic particles weakly couple to the quantized phonon field. For large particle number and suitably small coupling, we show that the dynamics of the system is approximately described by the Landau-Pekar equations. These describe a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a classical polarization field, whose dynamics is effected by the condensate, i.e., the back-reaction of the phonons that are created by the particles during the time evolution is of leading order.
We consider mixtures of Bose gases of different species. We prove that in the mean field limit and under suitable conditions on the initial condition a system composed of two Bose species can be effectively described by a system of coupled Hartree equations. Moreover, we derive quantitative bounds on the rates of convergence of the reduced density matrices in Sobolev trace norms. We treat both the non-relativistic case in the presence of an external magnetic field $A\in L^2_{\text{loc}}(\R^3;\R^3)$ and the semi-relativistic case.
A spinor derivation is presented for quasilocal mean-curvature mass of spacelike 2-surfaces in General Relativity. The derivation is based on the Sen-Witten spinor identity and involves the introduction of novel nonlinear boundary conditions related to the Dirac current of the spinor at the 2-surface and the tangential flux of a boundary Dirac operator, as well the use of a spin basis adapted to the mean curvature frame of the 2-surface normal space. This setting may provide an alternative approach to a positivity proof for mean-curvature mass based on showing that Witten's equation admits a s…
The spatiality of derivations of quasi *-algebras is investigated by means of representation theory. Moreover, in view of physical applications, the spatiality of the limit of a family of spatial derivations is considered.
The Lindblad equation is an evolution equation for the density matrix in quantum theory. It is the general linear, Markovian, form which ensures that the density matrix is hermitian, trace 1, positive and completely positive. Some elementary examples of the Lindblad equation are given. The derivation of the Lindblad equation presented here is "simple" in that all it uses is the expression of a hermitian matrix in terms of its orthonormal eigenvectors and real eigenvalues. Thus, it is appropriate for students who have learned the algebra of quantum theory. Where helpful, arguments are first giv…
We review some recent results concerning the derivation of effective evolution equations from first principle quantum dynamics. In particular, we discuss the derivation of the Hartree equation for mean field systems and the derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the time evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates.
We consider the quantum mechanical many-body problem of a single impurity particle immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas. The impurity interacts with the bosons via a two-body potential. We study the Hamiltonian of this system in the mean-field limit and rigorously show that, at low energies, the problem is well described by the Fröhlich polaron model.
We study the dynamics of a Fermi gas with a Coulomb interaction potential, and show that, in a mean-field limiting regime, the dynamics is described by the Hartree-Fock equation. This extends previous work of Bardos et al. to the case of unbounded interaction potentials. We also express the mean-field limit as a "superhamiltonian" system, and state our main result in terms of a Heisenberg-picture dynamics of observables. This is a Egorov-type theorem.
In this paper, we first briefly review some recent results on the distribution of the maximal eigenvalue of a $(N\times N)$ random matrix drawn from Gaussian ensembles. Next we focus on the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and by suitably adapting a method of orthogonal polynomials developed by Gross and Matytsin in the context of Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions, we provide a rather simple derivation of the Tracy-Widom law for GUE. Our derivation is based on the elementary asymptotic scaling analysis of a pair of coupled nonlinear recursion relations. As an added bonus, this method also all…
The iterative random subdivision of rectangles is used as a generation model of networks in physics, computer science, and urban planning. However, these researches were independent. We consider some relations in them, and derive fundamental properties for the average lifetime depending on birth-time and the balanced distribution of rectangle faces.
In 1966, Arnold [1] showed that the Lagrangian flow of ideal incompressible fluids (described by Euler equations) coincide with the geodesic flow on the manifold of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the fluid domain. Arnold's proof and the subsequent work on this topic rely heavily on the properties of Lie groups and Lie algebras which remain unfamiliar to most fluid dynamicists. In this note, we provide a simple derivation of Arnold's result which only uses the classical methods of calculus of variations. In particular, we show that the Lagrangian flow maps generated by the solutions of th…
We present a simple Lie-algebraic approach to momentum-space two-point functions of two-dimensional conformal field theory at finite temperature dual to the BTZ black hole. Making use of the real-time prescription of AdS/CFT correspondence and ladder equations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(2,2) \cong \mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})_{L} \oplus \mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})_{R}$, we show that the finite-temperature two-point functions in momentum space satisfy linear recurrence relations with respect to the left and right momenta. These recurrence relations are exactly solvable and completely dete…

We give a new derivation of mean-field percolation critical behaviour from the triangle condition that is quantitatively much better than previous proofs when the triangle diagram $\nabla_{p_c}$ is large. In contrast to earlier methods, our approach continues to yield bounds of reasonable order when the triangle diagram $\nabla_p$ is unbounded but diverges slowly as $p \uparrow p_c$, as is expected to occur in percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ at the upper-critical dimension $d=6$. Indeed, we show in particular that if the triangle diagram diverges polylogarithmically as $p \uparrow p_c$ then mean…
The four exactly-solvable models related to non-sinusoidal coordinates, namely, the Coulomb, Eckart, Rosen-Morse type I and II models are normally being treated separately, despite the similarity of the functional forms of the potentials, their eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Based on an extension of the prepotential approach to exactly and quasi-exactly solvable models proposed previously, we show how these models can be derived and solved in a simple and unified way.
In this paper the Hartree equation is derived from the $N$-body Schr\''odinger equation in the mean-field limit, with convergence rate estimates that are uniform in the Planck constant $\hbar$. Specifically, we consider the two following cases:(a) T\''oplitz initial data and Lipschitz interaction forces, and (b) analytic initial data and interaction potential, over short time intervals independent of $\hbar$. The convergence rates in these two cases are $1/\sqrt{\log\log N}$ and $1/N$ respectively. The treatment of the second case is entirely self-contained and all the constants appearing in t…
We study the propagation of two-dimensional finite-amplitude shear waves in a nonlinear pre-strained incompressible solid, and derive several asymptotic amplitude equations in a simple, consistent, and rigorous manner. The scalar Zabolotskaya (Z) equation is shown to be the asymptotic limit of the equations of motion for all elastic generalized neo-Hookean solids (with strain energy depending only on the first principal invariant of Cauchy-Green strain). However, we show that the Z equation cannot be a scalar equation for the propagation of two-dimensional shear waves in general elastic materi…
In this paper we provide a novel strategy to prove the validity of Hartree's theory for the ground state energy of bosonic quantum systems in the mean-field regime. For the well-known case of trapped Bose gases, this can be shown using the strong quantum de Finetti theorem, which gives the structure of infinite hierarchies of k-particles density matrices. Here we deal with the case where some particles are allowed to escape to infinity, leading to a lack of compactness. Our approach is based on two ingredients: (1) a weak version of the quantum de Finetti theorem, and (2) geometric techniques …
