This paper aims to study the configuration of two components caused by rotational and tidal distortions in the model of a binary system. The potentials of the two distorted components can be approximated to 2nd-degree harmonics. Furthermore, both the accretion luminosity ($σ_{i}$) and the irradiative luminosity are included in stellar structure equations. The equilibrium structure of rotationally and tidally distorted star is exactly a triaxial ellipsoids. A formula describing the isobars is presented, and the rotational velocity and the gravitational acceleration at the primary surface simulated. The results show the distortion at the outer layers of the primary increases with temporal variation and system evolution. Besides, it was observed that the luminosity accretion is unstable, and the curve of the energy-generation rate fluctuates after the main sequence in rotation sequences. The luminosity in rotation sequences is slightly weaker than that in non-rotation sequences. As a result, the volume expands slowly. Polar ejection is intensified by the tidal effect. The ejection of an equatorial ring may be favoured by both the opacity effect and the $g_{e}(θ,φ)$-effect in the binary system.
Simple spherical, non-rotating stellar models are inadequate when describing real stars in the limit of very fast rotation: Both the observable spectrum and the geometrical shape of the star deviate strongly from simple models. We attempt to approach the problem of modeling geometrically distorted, rapidly rotating stars from a new angle: By constructing distorted geometrical models and integrating standard stellar models with varying temperature, gravity, and abundances, over the entire surface, we attempt a semi-empirical approach to modeling. Here we present our methodology, and present sim…
To the best of our knowledge, there are no specific calculations of gravity-darkening exponents for white dwarfs in the literature. On the other hand, the number of known eclipsing binaries whose components are tidally and/or rotationally distorted white dwarfs is increasing year on year. Our main objective is to present the first theoretical approaches to the problem of the distribution of temperatures on the surfaces of compact stars distorted by rotation and/or tides in order to compare with relevant observational data. We find discrepancies between the gravity-darkening exponents calculate…
We present the discovery of an unusual, tidally-distorted extremely low mass white dwarf (WD) with nearly solar metallicity. Radial velocity measurements confirm that this is a compact binary with an orbital period of 2.6975 hrs and a velocity semi-amplitude of K = 108.7 km/s. Analysis of the hydrogen Balmer lines yields an effective temperature of Teff = 8380 K and a surface gravity of log g = 6.21 that in turn indicate a mass of M = 0.16 Msol and a cooling age of 4.2 Gyr. In addition, a detailed analysis of the observed metal lines yields abundances of log Mg/H = -3.90, log Ca/H = -5.80, log…

We consider discs that orbit a central object and are tidally perturbed by a circular orbit companion. Such discs are sometimes subject to an eccentric instability due to the effects of certain resonances. Eccentric instabilities may be present in planetary rings perturbed by satellites, protostellar discs perturbed by planets, and discs in binary star systems. Although the basic mechanism for eccentric instability is well understood, the detailed response of a gaseous disc to such an instability is not understood. We apply a linear eccentricity evolution equation developed by Goodchild and Og…
We identify two new tidally distorted white dwarfs (WDs), SDSS J174140.49+652638.7 and J211921.96-001825.8 (hereafter J1741 and J2119). Both stars are extremely low mass (ELM, < 0.2 Msun) WDs in short-period, detached binary systems. High-speed photometric observations obtained at the McDonald Observatory reveal ellipsoidal variations and Doppler beaming in both systems; J1741, with a minimum companion mass of 1.1 Msun, has one of the strongest Doppler beaming signals ever observed in a binary system (0.59 \pm 0.06% amplitude). We use the observed ellipsoidal variations to constrain the radius…
The close proximity of short period hot-Jupiters to their parent star means they are subject to extreme tidal forces. This has a profound effect on their structure and, as a result, density measurements that assume that the planet is spherical can be incorrect. We have simulated the tidally distorted surface for 34 known short period hot-Jupiters, assuming surfaces of constant gravitational equipotential for the planet, and the resulting densities have been calculated based only on observed parameters of the exoplanet systems. Comparing these results to the density values assuming the planets …
A new class of pulsating binary stars was recently discovered, whose pulsation amplitudes are strongly modulated with orbital phase. Stars in close binaries are tidally distorted, so we examine how a star's tidally induced asphericity affects its oscillation mode frequencies and eigenfunctions. We explain the pulsation amplitude modulation via tidal mode coupling such that the pulsations are effectively confined to certain regions of the star, e.g., the tidal pole or the tidal equator. In addition to a rigorous mathematical formalism to compute this coupling, we provide a more intuitive semi-a…
It has long been suspected that tidal forces in close binary stars could modify the orientation of the pulsation axis of the constituent stars. Such stars have been searched for, but until now never detected. Here we report the discovery of tidally trapped pulsations in the ellipsoidal variable HD 74423 in TESS space photometry data. The system contains a Delta Scuti pulsator in a 1.6-d orbit, whose pulsation mode amplitude is strongly modulated at the orbital frequency, which can be explained if the pulsations have a much larger amplitude in one hemisphere of the star. We interpret this as an…

Tidally locked gas giants are typically in several-day orbits, implying a modest role for rotation in the atmospheric circulation. Nevertheless, there exist a class of gas-giant, highly irradiated objects---brown dwarfs orbiting white dwarfs in extremely tight orbits---whose orbital and hence rotation periods are as short as 1-2 hours. Phase curves and other observations have already been obtained for this class of objects, raising fundamental questions about the role of increasing planetary rotation rate in controlling the circulation. So far, most modeling studies have investigated rotation …
We present an analysis of the first Kepler K2 mission observations of a rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star, HD 24355 ($V=9.65$). The star was discovered in SuperWASP broadband photometry with a frequency of 224.31 d$^{-1}$, (2596.18 $μ$Hz; $P = 6.4$ min) and an amplitude of 1.51 mmag, with later spectroscopic analysis of low-resolution spectra showing HD 24355 to be an A5 Vp SrEu star. The high precision K2 data allow us to identify 13 rotationally split sidelobes to the main pulsation frequency of HD 24355. This number of sidelobes combined with an unusual rotational phase variation show this…
We present observations at 7 mm that fully resolve the two circumstellar disks, and a reanalyses of archival observations at 3.5 cm that resolve along their major axes the two ionized jets, of the class I binary protostellar system L1551 NE. We show that the two circumstellar disks are better fit by a shallow inner and steep outer power-law than a truncated power-law. The two disks have very different transition radii between their inner and outer regions of $\sim$18.6 AU and $\sim$8.9 AU respectively. Assuming that they are intrinsically circular and geometrically thin, we find that the two c…
In close binary systems, rotation and tidal forces of the component stars deform each other and destroy their spherical symmetry. We present new models for low-mass, pre-main sequence stars that include the combined distortion effects of tidal and rotational forces on the equilibrium configuration of stars. We investigate the effects of interaction between tides and rotation on the stellar structure and evolution. The Kippenhahn & Thomas (1970) approximation, along with the Clairaut-Legendre expansion for the gravitational potential of a self-gravitating body, is used to take the distortion ef…
Optical interferometry provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. Through direct observation of rotationally distorted photospheres at sub-milliarcsecond scales, we are now able to characterize latitude dependencies of stellar radius, temperature structure, and even energy transport. These detailed new views of stars are leading to revised thinking in a broad array of associated topics, such as spectroscopy, stellar evolution, and exoplanet detection. As newly advanced techniques and instrumentation mature, this topic in astronomy is …
We present radio and mm continuum observations of the Galactic center taken with the VLA and ALMA at 44 and 226 GHz, respectively. We detect radio and mm emission from IRS 3, lying ~4.5" NW of Sgr A*, with a spectrum that is consistent with the photospheric emission from an AGB star at the Galactic center. Millimeter images reveal that the envelope of IRS 3, the brightest and most extended 3.8$μ$m Galactic center stellar source, consists of two semi-circular dust shells facing the direction of Sgr A*. The outer circumstellar shell at the distance of 1.6$\times10^4$ AU, appears to break up into…
As a test of rotationally-induced mixing causing the well-known Li dip in older mid-F dwarfs in the local Galactic disk, we utilize high-resolution and -S/N Keck/HIRESspectroscopy to measure the Li abundance in the components of the1 Gyr, [Fe/H]=-0.15 eclipsing short-period binary V505 Per. We find A(Li)=2.7+/-0.1 and 2.4+/-0.2 in the Teff=6500 and 6450 K primary and secondary components, respectively. Previous Teff determinations and uncertainties suggest that each component is located in the midst of the Li dip. If so, their A(Li) are >=2-5 times larger than A(Li) detections and upper limits…
In G dwarfs, the surface distribution, coverage and lifetimes of starspots deviate from solar-like patterns as the rotation rate increases. We set up a numerical platform which includes the large-scale rotational and surface flow effects, aiming to simulate evolving surface patterns over an activity cycle for up to 8 times the solar rotation and flux emergence rates. At the base of the convection zone, we assume a solar projected butterfly diagram. We then follow the rotationally distorted trajectories of rising thin flux tubes to obtain latitudes and tilt angles. Using them as source distribu…
Tidally distorted rotating stars and gaseous planets are subject to a well-known linear fluid instability -- the elliptical instability. It has been proposed that this instability might drive enough energy dissipation to solve the long-standing problem of the origin of tidal dissipation in stars and planets. But the nonlinear outcome of the elliptical instability has yet to be investigated in the parameter regime of interest, and the resulting turbulent energy dissipation has not yet been quantified. We do so by performing three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a small patch of a tida…
We report a new subdwarf B (sdB) pulsator, PG1142-037, discovered during the first full-length campaign of K2, the two-gyro mission of the Kepler space telescope. Fourteen periodicities have been detected between 0.9 and 2.5 hours with amplitudes below 0.35 ppt. We have been able to associate all of the pulsations with low-degree, ell<=2 modes. Follow-up spectroscopy of PG1142 has revealed it to be in a binary with a period of 0.54 days. Phase-folding the K2 photometry reveals a two-component variation including both Doppler boosting and ellipsoidal deformation. Perhaps the most surprising and…
We quantify the systematic impact of the non-spherical shape of transiting planets and brown dwarfs, due to tidal forces and rotation, on the observed transit depth. Such a departure from sphericity leads to a bias in the derivation of the transit radius from the light curve and affects the comparison with planet structure and evolution models which assume spherical symmetry. As the tidally deformed planet projects its smallest cross section area during the transit, the measured effective radius is smaller than the one of the unperturbed spherical planet. This effect can be corrected by calcul…
We consider a synchronized, circular-orbit binary consisting of a polytrope with index n and a point-mass object, and use a self-consistent field method to construct the equilibrium structure of the polytrope under rotational and tidal perturbations. Our self-consistent field method is distinct from others in that the equilibrium orbital angular velocity is calculated automatically rather than being prescribed, which is crucial for obtaining apsidal motion rates accurately. We find that the centrifugal and tidal forces make perturbed stars more centrally condensed and larger in size. For n=1.5…
The Extremely Low Mass White Dwarfs (ELM WDs) and pre-ELM WDs are helium core white dwarfs with mass $<\sim 0.3M_{\odot}$. Evolution simulations show that a lower mass limit for ELM WDs exists at $\approx0.14M_{\odot}$ and no one is proposed by observation to be less massive than that. Here we report the discovery of a binary system, LAMOST J224040.77-020732.8 (J2240 in short), which consists of a very low mass hot star and a compact companion. Multi-epoch spectroscopy shows an orbital period $P_{orb} =$0.219658$\pm0.000002$ days and a radial velocity semi-amplitude $K1=318.5\pm3.3km/s$, which…
Jayasinghe et al. (2021) identified a dark $\approx 3\,M_\odot$ companion on a nearly edge-on $\approx 60\,\mathrm{day}$ orbit around the red giant star V723 Monoceros as a black hole candidate in the mass gap. This scenario was shown to explain most of the data presented by Jayasinghe et al. (2021), except for periodic radial velocity (RV) residuals from the circular Keplerian model. Here we show that the RV residuals are explained by orbital phase-dependent distortion of the absorption line profile associated with changing visible fractions of the approaching and receding sides of the red gi…
We revisit the global modes and instabilities of homogeneous rotating ellipsoidal fluid masses, which are the simplest global models of rotationally and tidally deformed gaseous planets or stars. The tidal flow in a short-period planet may be unstable to the elliptical instability, a hydrodynamic instability that can drive tidal evolution. We perform a global (and local WKB) analysis to study this instability using the elegant formalism of Lebovitz & Lifschitz. We survey the parameter space of global instabilities with harmonic orders $\ell\leq 5$, for planets with spins that are purely aligne…
