The electronic properties of non-interacting particles moving on a two-dimensional bricklayer lattice are investigated numerically. In particular, the influence of disorder in form of a spatially varying random magnetic flux is studied. In addition, a strong perpendicular constant magnetic field $B$ is considered. The density of states $ρ(E)$ goes to zero for $E\to 0$ as in the ordered system, but with a much steeper slope. This happens for both cases: at the Dirac point for B=0 and at the center of the central Landau band for finite $B$. Close to the Dirac point, the dependence of $ρ(E)$ on the system size, on the disorder strength, and on the constant magnetic flux density is analyzed and fitted to an analytical expression proposed previously in connection with the thermal quantum Hall effect. Additional short-range on-site disorder completely replenishes the indentation in the density of states at the Dirac point.
We review the results of our recent numerical investigations on the electronic properties of disordered two dimensional systems with chiral unitary, chiral orthogonal, and chiral symplectic symmetry. Of particular interest is the behavior of the density of states and the logarithmic scaling of the smallest Lyapunov exponents in the vicinity of the chiral quantum critical point in the band center at E=0. The observed peaks or depressions in the density of states, the distribution of the critical conductances, and the possible non-universality of the critical exponents for certain chiral unitary…
Using the transfer matrix technique, we investigate the propagation of electron through a two dimensional disordered sample. We find that the spatial distribution of electrons is homogeneous only in the limit of weak disorder (diffusive transport regime). In the limit of very strong disorder, we identify a narrow channel through which the electron propagates from one side of the sample to the opposite side. Even in this limit, we prove the wave character of the electron propagation.
We study the disorder-induced deterministic dispersion of particles uniformly driven in an array of narrow tracks. For different toy models with quenched disorder we obtain exact analytical expressions for the steady-state mean velocity $v$ and the dispersion constant $D$ for any driving force $f$ above a putative depinning threshold. For short-range correlated pinning forces we find that at large drives $D\sim 1/v$ for random-field type of disorder while $D \sim 1/v^3$ for the random-bond type. We show numerically that these results are robust: the same scaling holds for models of massive dam…
The Dirac fermion in the random chiral models is studied which includes the random gauge field model and the random hopping model. We focus on a connection between continuum and lattice models to give a clear perspective for the random chiral models. Two distinct structures of density of states (DoS) around zero energy, one is a power-law dependence on energy in the intermediate energy range and the other is a diverging one at zero energy, are revealed by an extensive numerical study for large systems up to $250\times 250$. For the random hopping model, our finding of the diverging DoS within …
The low-energy spectrum of graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges (armchair nanoribbons) is described as the superposition of two non-equivalent Dirac points of graphene. In spite of the lack of well-separated two valley structures, the single-channel transport subjected to long-ranged impurities is nearly perfectly conducting, where the backward scattering matrix elements in the lowest order vanish as a manifestation of internal phase structures of the wavefunction. For multi-channel energy regime, however, the conventional exponential decay of the averaged conductance occurs. Since the int…
We study charge transport in one-dimensional graphene superlattices created by applying layered periodic and disordered potentials. It is shown that the transport and spectral properties of such structures are strongly anisotropic. In the direction perpendicular to the layers, the eigenstates in a disordered sample are delocalized for all energies and provide a minimal non-zero conductivity, which cannot be destroyed by disorder, no matter how strong this is. However, along with extended states, there exist discrete sets of angles and energies with exponentially localized eigenfunctions (disor…
We study the density of states (DOS) in band gaps of ideal and disordered three-dimensional photonic crystals of finite size. The ideal crystal is a diamond lattice of resonant point scatterers (atoms) whereas the disordered one is obtained from it by displacing the scatterers by random distances in random directions. We find that DOS inside a band gap of the ideal crystal decreases as the inverse of the crystal size. Disorder narrows the band gap and DOS exhibits enhanced fluctuations near the new band edges. However, the average DOS still exhibits the same scaling with the crystal size withi…
Dramatic glass-like behavior involving nonexponential relaxation of in-plane electrical conduction, has been induced in quench-condensed ultrathin amorphous Bi films by the application of a parallel magnetic field. The effect is found over a narrow range of film thicknesses well on the insulating side of the thickness-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The simplest explanation of this field-induced glass-like behavior is a Pauli principle blocking of hopping transport between singly occupied states when electrons are polarized by the magnetic field. A second explanation involving weak …
We measure the frequency dependence of the complex ac conductivity of NbN films with different levels of disorder in frequency range 0.4-20 GHz. Films with low disorder exhibit a narrow dynamic fluctuation regime above T_c as expected for a conventional superconductor. However, for strongly disordered samples, the fluctuation regime extends well above T_c, with a strongly frequency-dependent superfluid stiffness which disappears only at a temperature T* close to the pseudogap temperature obtained from scanning tunneling measurements. Such a finite-frequency response is associated to a marked s…
Several lattices, such as the dice or the Lieb lattice, possess Dirac cones and a flat band crossing the Dirac point, whose effective model is the pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl equation. We investigate the fate of the flat band in the presence of disorder by focusing on the density of states (DOS) and dc conductivity. While the central hub-site does not reveal the presence of the flat band, the sublattice resolved DOS on the non-central sites exhibits a narrow peak with height ~ 1/\sqrt{g} with g the dimensionless disorder variance. Although the group velocity is zero on the flat band, the dc conduc…
We analyze the scaling behavior of the two smallest Lyapunov exponents for electrons propagating on two-dimensional lattices with energies within a very narrow interval around the chiral critical point at E=0 in the presence of a perpendicular random magnetic flux. By a numerical analysis of the energy and size dependence we confirm that the two smallest Lyapunov exponents are functions of a single parameter. The latter is given by ln L/ln xi(E), which is the ratio of the logarithm of the system width L to the logarithm of the correlation length xi(E). Close to the chiral critical point and en…
We study Anderson localization of waves in a one dimensional disordered meta-material of bilayers comprising of thin fixed length scatterers placed randomly along a homogenous medium. As an interplay between order and disorder, we identify a new regime of strong disorder where the localization length becomes independent of the amount of disorder but depends on the frequency of the wave excitation and on the properties of the fixed length scatterer. As an example of a naturally occurring nearly one dimensional disordered bilayer, we calculate the wavelength dependent reflection spectrum for Koi…
Anderson localization is the ubiquitous phenomenon of inhibition of transport of classical and quantum waves in a disordered medium. In dimension one, it is well known that all states are localized, implying that the distribution of an initially narrow wave-packet released in a disordered potential will, at long time, decay exponentially on the scale of the localization length. However, the exact shape of the stationary localized distribution differs from a purely exponential profile and has been computed almost fifty years ago by Gogolin. Using the atomic quantum kicked rotor, a paradigmatic …
We consider a one-dimensional spin chain system with quenched disorder and in the presence of a local periodic drive. We study the time evolution of the system in the Floquet basis and evaluate the fidelity susceptibility, which is a measure of how a given state changes under a small perturbation, of states to a weak periodic drive. We demonstrate that the statistical properties of the fidelity susceptibility over different disorder realizations can be used to identify two phases of the system: (1) the many-body localized phase, in which the susceptibility exhibits long tails while its average…
Using the recently introduced adaptive density-matrix renormalization-group method, we study the many spin-spin correlations of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with random coupling constants, namely, the mean value of the bulk and of the end-to-end correlations, the typical value of the bulk correlations, and the distribution of the bulk correlations. Our results are in striking agreement with the predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group method. We do not find any hint of logarithmic corrections neither in the bulk average correlations, which were recently rep…
Jammed disordered packings of non-spherical particles show significant variation in the packing density as a function of particle shape for a given packing protocol. Rotationally symmetric elongated shapes such as ellipsoids, spherocylinders, and dimers, e.g., pack significantly denser than spheres over a narrow range of aspect ratios, exhibiting a characteristic peak at aspect ratios of $α_{\rm max}\approx 1.4-1.5$. However, the structural features that underlie this non-monotonic behaviour in the packing density are unknown. Here, we study disordered packings of frictionless dimers in three …
We study the wetting transition and the directed polymer delocalization transition on diamond hierarchical lattices. These two phase transitions with frozen disorder correspond to the critical points of quadratic renormalizations of the partition function.(These exact renormalizations on diamond lattices can also be considered as approximate Migdal-Kadanoff renormalizations for hypercubic lattices). In terms of the rescaled partition function $z=Z/Z_{typ}$,we find that the critical point corresponds to a fixed point distribution with a power-law tail $P_c(z) \sim Φ(\ln z)/z^{1+μ}$ as $z \to +\i…
We calculate the subgap density of states of a disordered single-channel normal metal connected to a superconductor at one end (NS junction) or at both ends (SNS junction). The probability distribution of the energy of a bound state (Andreev level) is broadened by disorder. In the SNS case the two-fold degeneracy of the Andreev levels is removed by disorder leading to a splitting in addition to the broadening. The distribution of the splitting is given precisely by Wigner's surmise from random-matrix theory. For strong disorder the mean density of states is largely unaffected by the proximity …
We investigate numerically the time evolution of wave packets incident on one-dimensional semi-infinite lattices with mosaic modulated random on-site potentials, which are characterized by the integer-valued modulation period $κ$ and the disorder strength $W$. For Gaussian wave packets with the central energy $E_0$ and a small spectral width, we perform extensive numerical calculations of the disorder-averaged time-dependent reflectance, $\langle R(t)\rangle$, for various values of $E_0$, $κ$, and $W$. We find that the long-time behavior of $\langle R(t)\rangle$ obeys a power law of the form $…
