We present the results of an in-depth study of the long-period X-ray pulsar GX 301-2. Using archival data of INTEGRAL, RXTE ASM, and CGRO BATSE, we study the spectral and timing properties of the source. Comparison of our timing results with previously published work reveals a secular decay of the orbital period at a rate of \simeq -3.25 \times 10^{-5} d yr^{-1}, which is an order of magnitude faster than for other known systems. We argue that this is probably result either of the apsidal motion or of gravitational coupling of the matter lost by the optical companion with the neutron star, although current observations do not allow us to distinguish between those possibilities. We also propose a model to explain the observed long pulse period. We find that a very strong magnetic field B \sim 10^{14} G can explain the observed pulse period in the framework of existing models for torques affecting the neutron star. We show that the apparent contradiction with the magnetic field strength B_{CRSF} \sim 4 \times 10^{12} G derived from the observed cyclotron line position may be resolved if the line formation region resides in a tall accretion column of height \sim 2.5 - 3 R_{NS}. The color temperature measured from the spectrum suggests that such a column may indeed be present, and our estimates show that its height is sufficient to explain the observed cyclotron line position.
In this study we derive the magnetized Taub adiabat equations from the hydrodynamic conservation conditions. We employ the magnetized taub adiabat equations to study the evolution of a magnetized neutron star to magnetized quark star. The pressure of the burnt quark matter has a maximum which indicates a bound on the maximum mass of the quark star. The central density of the neutron star and the angle between the rotation axis and the magnetic axis (defined as the tilt angle) are seen to be significant in determining the magnetic field, and the tilt of the quark star. The magnetic field and th…
In this work, we calculate the neutron anomalous magnetic moment supposing that this value can depend on the density and magnetic field of system. We employ the lowest order constraint variation (LOCV) method and $AV_{18}$ nuclear potential to calculate the medium dependency of the neutron anomalous magnetic moment. It is confirmed that the neutron anomalous magnetic moment increases by increasing the density, while it decreases as the magnetic field grows. The energy and equation of state for the system have also been investigated.
Highly magnetized neutron stars are promising candidates to explain some of the most peculiar astronomical phenomena, for instance, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, and superluminous supernovae. Pulsations of these highly magnetized neutron stars are also speculated to produce detectable gravitational waves. In addition, pulsations are important probes of the structure and equation of state of the neutron stars. The major challenge in studying the pulsations of highly magnetized neutron stars is the demanding numerical cost of consistently solving the nonlinear Einstein and Maxwell equatio…

In this work we show the results for numerical solutions of the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equation for a typical neutron star with 1.4 solar masses. We have studied the internal magnetic field considering both the poloidal and toroidal components, as well as the behavior of the field lines parametrized by the ratio between these components of the field.
We study a simple model describing thermal radiation spectra from magnetized neutron stars. The model assumes that a star is nearly spherical and isothermal inside and possesses dipole magnetic fields ($B \lesssim 10^{14}$ G) near the surface, which make the surface temperature distribution non--uniform. We assume further that any surface element emits a blackbody (BB) spectrum with a local effective temperature. We show that such thermal spectra (including phase--resolved) are accurately approximated by simple equivalent two--BB (2BB) models. We introduce and study phase--space maps of 2BB pa…
A neutron star is one of the possible end states of a massive star. It is compressed by gravity and stabilized by the nuclear degeneracy pressure. Despite its name, the composition of these objects is not exactly known. However, from the inferred densities, neutrons will most likely compose a significant fraction of the star's interior. While all neutron stars are expected to have a magnetic field, some neutron stars (''magnetars'') are much more highly magnetized than others with inferred magnetar surface magnetic field is between $10^{14}$ to $10^{15}$ gauss. While neutron stars are macrosco…
X-ray polarimetry missions like IXPE will be able to measure for the first time the polarization properties of accreting, weakly magnetized neutron stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries. In this work we present simulations of the expected X-ray polarized signal including the coronal emission for different geometries of the corona itself, i.e. a slab above the accretion disc and a spherical shell around the neutron star. The simulations are performed with the fully relativistic Monte Carlo code monk capable of computing the X-ray polarization degree and angle for various physical input parameters of…
We run two GRRMHD simulations of super-Eddington accretion disks around a black hole and a non-magnetized, non-rotating neutron star. The neutron star was modeled using a reflective inner boundary condition. We observe the formation of a transition layer in the inner region of the disk in the neutron star simulation which leads to a larger mass outflow rate and a lower radiative luminosity over the black hole case. Sphereization of the flow leads to an observable luminosity at infinity around the Eddington value when viewed from all directions for the neutron star case, contrasting to the blac…
We perform a general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulation for $\approx 30$ ms after merger of a binary neutron star to a remnant massive neutron star (RMNS) with a high spatial resolution of the finest grid resolution $12.5$ m. First, we estimate that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at merger could amplify the magnetic-field energy up to $\sim 1\%$ of the thermal energy. Second, we find that the magnetorotational instability in the RMNS envelope and torus with $ρ< 10^{13}~{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$ sustains magneto-turbulent state and the effective viscous parameter in these regions is likely t…
A simple and well known model for thermal radiation spectra from a magnetized neutron star is further studied. The model assumes that the star is internally isothermal and possesses dipole magnetic field (B <= 1e14 G) in the outer heat-insulating layer. The heat transport through this layer makes the surface temperature distribution anisotropic; any local surface element is assumed to emit a blackbody (BB) radiation with a local effective temperature. It is shown that this thermal emission is nearly independent of the chemical composition of insulating envelope (at the same taken averaged effe…
We first derive a set of equations describing general stationary configurations of relativistic force-free plasma, without assuming any geometric symmetries. We then demonstrate that electromagnetic interaction of merging neutron stars is necessarily dissipative due to the effect of electromagnetic draping - creation of dissipative regions near the star (in the single-magnetized case) or at the magnetospheric boundary (in the double-magnetized case). Our results indicate that even in the single magnetized case we expect that relativistic jets (or ``tongues'') are produced, with correspondingly…
Recent detection of gravitational wave from nine black hole merger events and one neutron star merger event by LIGO and VIRGO shed a new light in the field of astrophysics. On the other hand, in the past decade, a few super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf candidates have been inferred through the peak luminosity of the light-curves of a few peculiar type Ia supernovae, though there is no direct detection of these objects so far. Similarly, a number of neutron stars with mass $>2M_\odot$ have also been observed. Continuous gravitational wave can be one of the alternate ways to detect these compact ob…
Periodic changes in a thermal soft X-ray flux of a rotating neutron star indicate a non-uniform distribution of the surface temperature. A possible cause of this phenomenon is a suppression of the heat flux across the magnetic field lines in a crust and an envelope of magnetized neutron stars. In this paper we study three-dimensional effects, associated with non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in neutron stars. We calculate the surface temperature distribution by solving numerically a three dimensional heat transfer equation in a magnetized neutron star crust. We adopt an anisotropic (tensorial) …
The magnetosphere of strongly magnetized neutron stars, such as magnetars, can sustain large electric currents. The charged particles return to the surface with large Lorentz factors, producing a particle bombardment. We investigate the transport of radiation in the atmosphere of strongly magnetized neutron stars, in the presence of particle bombardment heating. We solve the radiative transfer equations for a gray atmosphere in the Eddington approximation, accounting for the polarization induced by a strong magnetic field. The solutions show the formation of a hot external layer and a low (uni…
We study neutrino and antineutrino emission from the direct Urca process in neutron-star matter in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We calculate the neutrino emissivity of the direct Urca process, whereby a neutron converts to a proton, an electron and an antineutrino, or a proton-electron pair converts to a neutron-neutrino pair. We solve exact wave functions for protons and electrons in the states described with Landau levels. We find that the direct Urca process can satisfy the kinematic constraints even in density regions where this process could not normally occur in the absence of…
We have studied shock in magnetized accretion flow/funnel flow in case of neutron star with bremsstrahlung cooling and cyclotron cooling. All accretion solutions terminate with a shock close to the neutron star surface, but at some region of the parameter space, it also harbours a second shock away from the star surface. We have found that cyclotron cooling is necessary for correct accretion solutions which match the surface boundary conditions.
We make a perturbative calculation of neutrino scattering and absorption in hot and dense hyperonic neutron-star matter in the presence of a strong magnetic Field. We calculate that the absorption cross-sections in a fully relativistic mean-field theory. We find that there is a remarkable angular dependence, i.e. the neutrino absorption strength is reduced in a direction parallel to the magnetic Field and enhanced in the opposite direction. This asymmetry in the neutrino absorption is estimated to be as much as 2.2 % of the entire neutrino momentum for an interior magnetic Field of 2 x 10^{17}…
The mergers of black hole (BH)--neutron star (NS) binaries have been one of the most interesting topics in astrophysics, because such events have been thought to possibly produce multimessenger signals including gravitational waves and broadband electromagnetic (EM) waves. In this paper, we investigate EM emission from the inspiral of a binary composed of a spinning BH and a magnetized NS. Observationally, the BH is usually more massive than $\sim7M_\odot$ and the NS has a mass $\simeq 1.4M_\odot$. During the inspiral of such a binary, the BH will accumulate more and more charges based on the …
We present a model for a super-Eddington accretion disc around a magnetized neutron star taking into account advection of heat and the mass loss by the wind. The model is semi-analytical and predicts radial profiles of all basic physical characteristics of the accretion disc. The magnetospheric radius is found as an eigenvalue of the problem. When the inner disc is in radiation-pressure-dominated regime but does not reach its local Eddington limit, advection is mild, and the radius of the magnetosphere depends weakly on the accretion rate. Once approaching the local Eddington limit, the disc b…
