We have investigated the size effect in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films with a range of manganese (Mn) doping concentrations. We found that the size effect in the conventional Pt/PZT/Pt thin-film capacitors could be systematically reduced and almost completely eliminated by increasing Mn doping concentration. The interfacial layer at the electrode-film interface appears to disappear almost entirely for the PZT films with 2% Mn doping levels, confirmed by the fits using the conventional in-series capacitor model. Our work indicates that the size effect in ferroelectrics is extrinsic in nature, supporting the work by Saad et al. Other implications of our results have also been discussed. By comparing a variety of experimental studies in the literature we propose a scenario that the dead layer between PZT (or barium strontium titanate, BST) and metal electrodes such as Pt and Au might have a defective pyrochlore/fluorite structure (possibly with a small portion of ferroelectric perovskite phase).
Previous studies of Barkhausen noise in PZT have been limited to the energy spectrum (slew rate response voltages versus time), showing agreement with avalanche models; in barium titanate other exponents have been measured acoustically, but only at ambient temperatures. In the present study we report the Omori exponent (-0.95$\pm$0.03) for aftershocks in PZT and extend the barium titanate studies to a wider range of temperature.
Complementary diffuse and inelastic synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements of lead zirconate-titanate single crystals with composition near the morphotropic phase boundary (x=0.475) are reported. In the temperature range 293 K < T < 400 K a highly anisotropic quasielastic diffuse scattering is observed. Above 400 K this scattering disappears. Its main features can be reproduced by model of inhomogeneous lattice deformations caused by inclusions of a tetragonal phase into a rhombohedral or monoclinic phase. This observation supports the idea that PZT at its morphotropic phase boundary is ess…
We observed that electric field induces phase transition from tetragonal to rhombohedral in polycrystalline morphotropic lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, as reported in 2011 for bulk PZT. Moreover, we evidenced that this field-induced phase transition is strongly correlated with PZT film piezoelectric properties, that is to say the larger the phase transition, the larger the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d 33,eff . Although d 33,eff is already comprised between as 150 to 170 pm/V, our observation suggests that one could obtain larger d 33,eff values, namely 250 pm/V, by optimizing…
The results of the first investigations of the process of local decomposition of lead-lanthanum zirconate-titanate solid solution in the vicinity of the interphase boundaries separating domains of coexisting ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases are presented. The solid solution with the composition: 6 at% of La, 73 at% of Zr, and 27 at% of Ti is considered. The kinetics of the local decomposition of this solid solution in the process of aging of samples quenched down to room temperature from the paraelectric phase is studied. The mechanisms that define the kinetics of the process of esta…
Neutron diffraction data obtained on single crystals of PbZr1-xTixO3 with x = 0.325 and x = 0.460, which lie on the pseudorhombohedral side of the morphotropic phase boundary, suggest a coexistence of rhombohedral (R3m/R3c) and monoclinic (Cm) domains and that monoclinic order is enhanced by Ti substitution. A monoclinic phase with a doubled unit cell (Cc) is ruled out as the ground state.
Many ferroelectric devices are based on doped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), at which the relevant material's properties approach their maximum. Based on a synchrotron x-ray diffraction study of MPB PZT, bulk fatigue is unambiguously found to arise from a less effective field induced tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation, at which the degradation of the polarization flipping is detected by a less intense and more diffuse anomaly in the atomic displacement parameter of lead. The time dependence of the ferroelectric response…
The effect of polarization fatigue on the Rayleigh coefficients of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film was systematically investigated. It was found that electrical fatigue strongly affects the Rayleigh behaviour of the PZT film. Both the reversible and irreversible Rayleigh coefficients decrease with increasing the number of switching cycles. This phenomenon is attributed to the growth of an interfacial degraded layer between the electrode and the film during electrical cycling. The methodology used in this work could serve as an alternative non-destructive way for evaluatin…
Magnetoelectric (ME) coupling at low frequencies and at x-band have been investigated in layered samples containing zinc substituted lithium ferrite and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Multilayers of Li0.5-x/2ZnxFe2.5-x/2O4 (LZFO) (x=0-0.4) and PZT were prepared by lamination and sintering of thick films. At low frequencies (10-1000 Hz), the ME voltage coefficient for transverse fields is higher than for longitudinal fields. With Zn substitution in the ferrite, transverse coupling increases to a maximum for x=0.3 and then decreases for higher x. Analysis based on our model for a bilayer implies…
Over the past decades, there has been significant interest in new cooling technology based on the electrocaloric effect. The large electrocaloric effect observed in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials made possible development of dielectric cooling devices of a new generation. We report a significant impact of annealing on the electrocaloric effect observed in 12/65/35 PLZT bulk ceramics. The electrocaloric data were obtained by direct measurements. Electrocaloric results confirm the existence of the significant electrocaloric response in this relaxor ferroelectric PLZT composition…
Low frequency magnetoelectric (ME) coupling has been investigated in bulk and multilayers of cobalt zinc ferrite, Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0-0.6), and lead zirconate titanate. In bulk samples, the transverse and longitudinal couplings are weak and are of equal magnitude. A substantial strengthening of ME interactions is evident in layered structures, with the ME voltage coefficient a factor of 10-30 higher than in bulk samples. Important findings of the studies in layered composites are as follows. (i) The transverse coupling is stronger than the longitudinal coupling. (ii) The strength of ME interact…
Lead titanate (PbTiO3) is a classical example of a ferroelectric perovskite oxide illustrating a displacive phase transition accompanied by a softening of a symmetry-breaking mode. The underlying assumption justifying the soft-mode theory is that the crystal is macroscopically sufficiently uniform so that a meaningful free energy function can be formed. In contrast to PbTiO3, experimental studies show that the phase transition behaviour of lead-zirconate-titanate solid solution (PZT) is far more subtle. Most of the studies on the PZT system have been dedicated to ceramic or powder samples, in …
By performing standard PUND (positive-up-negative-down), hysteresis-loop and dielectric measurements on the ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin-film capacitors subject to bipolar/unipolar electrical cycling, we show that unipolar fatigue is evident though still less severe than bipolar fatigue conducted at the same voltage. That has been attributed to polarization retention (backswitching) induced by the residual depolarization field between the monopolar pulses where the applied field is lower than the depolarization field, and explained using the LPD-SICI model (LPD-SICI stands …
Recent findings of a large electrocaloric (EC) effect in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials open a potential possibility of development of solid-state cooling or heating devices of new generation with better energy efficiency that may be less harmful for the environment. We investigate by using direct measurements, the temperature and electric field dependence of the electrocaloric response in Pb1-xLax(ZryTi1-y)1-x/4O3 bulk ceramics (PLZT) with x=0.06 and 0.12. Here, the properties of the EC response were probed in a part of the PLZT composition phase diagram with low y=0.40 compo…
Results presented in this article demonstrate importance of taking into account such a phenomenon as the solid solution decomposition at the boundaries separating coexisting phases in lead-zirconate-titanate-based solid solutions with compositions belonging to the morphotropic boundary region of the "temperature-composition" phase diagram. It is shown that in the local decomposition of solid solutions in the vicinity of the boundaries separating the tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in lead-zirconate-titanate-based solid solutions lead to the changes of the chemical composition of the solid s…
This paper investigates the deflection of micro- electro-mechanical system (MEMS) based sandwiched cantilever beam for piezoelectric actuation using eight of the popular lead zirconatetitanate (PZT)piezoceramic material. The simulation for the investigation was carried away in COMSOL Multiphysics software environment. For the investigation of a certain model, the lowest tip deflection is found to be 38.074 nm for PZT-8 and the highest tip deflection is found to be 82.965 nm for PZT-5H. A 2 mm thick flexible foam core is sandwiched between two 8 mm thick aluminum layers in this model of sandwic…
The issues related to the structure refinement of Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PZT) solid solutions are discussed. Particular attention is paid on the modelling of the co-existing phases in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), where local symmetry is often significantly lower than the average symmetry. According to recent studies, two-phase co-existence in the vicinity of the MPB is a thermodynamical necessity. Significantly different structural models for PZT with $x$ in the vicinity of the MPB have recently been published. Structural models, based on x-ray, neutron and electron diffract…
We report a novel synthesis route of homogeneously manganese-doped titanium dioxide nanotubes in a broad concentration range. The scroll-type trititanate (H(2)Ti(3)O(7)) nanotubes prepared by hydrothermal synthesis were used as precursors. Mn2+ ions were introduced by an ion exchange method resulting Mn(x)H(2-x)Ti(3)O(7). In a subsequent heat-treatment they were transformed into Mn(y)Ti(1-y)O(2) where y=x/(3+x). The state and the local environment of the Mn2+ ions in the precursor and final products were studied by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) technique. It was found that the Mn2+ ions occupy…
Defects and defect models of solids are reviewed. A numerical method able to treat non-periodical solids possessing several simultaneous defect types is given for simulating scattering in nanosize clusters. The approach takes particle size, shape, and defects into account and isolates element specific signals. Examples illustrating how laboratory scale facilities can be used to extract crucial information about defects are given. As a case study a statistical approximation model for lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) is introduced. PZT is a material possessing several defect types, including substi…
We have investigated a water-stable sol-gel method based on ethylene glycol as a solvent and bridging ligand for the synthesis of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate in bulk and thin film forms. This method offers lower toxicity of the solvent, higher stability towards atmospheric moisture and a simplified synthetic procedure compared to traditional sol-gel methods. Ceramic pellets of Nb-doped lead zirconate titanate (PNZT) in the rhombohedral phase were produced with high density and good piezoelectric properties, comparable to those reported in the literature and those found in commercial …

Several different deposition techniques have been used successfully, including misted CSD (chemical solution deposition) and pore wetting. Ferroelectric hysteresis and high optical nonlinearity have been demonstrated. The structures are analyzed via SEM, TEM, XRD, AFM (piezo-mode), and SHG. Applications to trenching in Si dynami…
In this paper, we present some properties of Lead Zirconate Titanate - Poly Vinylidene Flouride composites. The obtained results indicate that PZT-PVDF fibers involved firms were achieved using electrospining method. In other hand, the effect of grain size, content and other factors under the purview of Young's modulus and ferroelectric properties.
The full phonon dispersion relations of lead titanate and lead zirconate in the cubic perovskite structure are computed using first-principles variational density-functional perturbation theory, with ab initio pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis set. Comparison with the results previously obtained for barium titanate shows that the change of a single constituent (Ba to Pb, Ti to Zr) has profound effects on the character and dispersion of unstable modes, with significant implications for the nature of the phase transitions and the dielectric and piezoelectric responses of the compounds. Exa…
The magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of cylindrical trilayered composite was studied in this paper. The Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-Ni trilayered cylindrical composite was synthesized by electro-deposition. The maximum ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical ME composite is 35V/cm Oe, about three times higher than that of the plate trilayered composite with the same raw materials and magnetostrictive- piezoelectric phase thickness ratio. The high ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical composite owes to the self-bound effect of circle. Moreover, the resulting complex condition can induce a doubl…
The synthesis of layered ferrite-lead titanate zirconate (PZT) and lanthanum nanganite-PZT and the observation of giant magneto-electric interactions are discussed. The ferrites used in our studies included pure and Zn substituted cobalt-, nickel- and lithium ferrites. Ferromagnetic manganites used included both calcium and strontium substituted systems. The samples were prepared from 10-40 mm thick films obtained by tape-casting. Our studies showed strong ME coupling in manganite-PZT and cobalt zinc ferrite-PZT, and a giant ME effect in nickel zinc ferrite-PZT. We found evidence for Zn assist…
The optical properties of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films deposited on ZnO were studied by m-lines spectroscopy. In order to retrieve the refractive index and the thickness of both layers from the m-lines spectra, we develop a numerical algorithm for the case of a two-layer system and show its robustness in the presence of noise. The sensitivity of the algorithm of the two-layer model allows us to relate the observed changes in the PZT refractive index to the PZT structural change due to the ZnO interface of the PZT/ZnO optical waveguide.
The origin of the very large piezoelectric response observed in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in perovskite lead zirconate titanate and related systems has been under intensive studies. Polarization rotation ideas are frequently invoked to explain the piezoelectric properties. It was recently reported that lead titanate undergoes a phase transformation sequence $P4mm\to Pm\to Cm\to R\bar{3}c$ at 10 K as a function of hydrostatic pressure [M. Ahart et al. Nature Letters. \textbf{451}, 545 (2008)]. We demonstrate that this interpretation is not correct by (i) simulating t…
Tunable transmittance response in the $0.1-25$ THz range for a lead Zirconate Titanate Ferroelectric film under imprint effects and surface anisotropy is calculated by adapting the classical Landau Devonshire theory and the Rouard's method. Induced electrical field is introduced by modulating the $P-E$ polarization profile, while the dielectric permittivity frequency dependence enters into the formalism by taking into the account the soft phonon mode E(TO1) contribution in the framework of the Drude-Lorentz model. It is found that two optical states of light transmittance emerge at zero applie…
The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline bulk PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) has been investigated according to electrical boundary conditions and poling. The thermal conductivity of poled PZT was measured in the poling direction for open circuit and short circuit conditions. The short circuit thermal conductivity had the largest thermal conductivity. The relationship between these two thermal properties, the electrothermal coupling factor $k_{33}^κ$, was found to be similar to the electromechanical coupling factor $k_{33}$ relating elastic compliance under short circuit and open circuit con…
Magnetoelectric interactions in bilayers of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are mediated by mechanical deformation. Here we discuss the theory and companion data for magnetoelectric (ME) coupling at electromechanical resonance (EMR) in a ferrite-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bilayer. Estimated ME voltage coefficient versus frequency profiles for nickel, cobalt, or lithium ferrite and PZT reveal a giant ME effect at EMR with the highest coupling expected for cobalt ferrite-PZT. Measurements of resonance ME coupling have been carried out on layered and bulk composites of nickel ferrite…
Thick film layered magnetoelectric composites consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases have been synthesized with nickel ferrite (NFO), cobalt ferrite (CFO), La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO), or La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Structural, magnetic and ferromagnetic resonance characterization shows evidence for defect free ferrites, but deterioration of manganite parameters. The resistivity and dielectric constants are smaller than expected values. The magnetoelectric effect (ME) is stronger in ferrite-PZT than in manganite-PZT. The ME voltage coefficient aE at room te…
First-principles calculations are performed to investigate alloying and ferroelectric effects in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with high Ti composition. We find that the main effect of alloying in the paraelectric phase of PZT is the existence of two sets of B-O bonds, i.e., shorter Ti-O bonds vs. longer Zr-O bonds. On the other hand, ferroelectricity leads to the formation of very short covalent Ti-O bonds and to the formation of covalent chains of Pb-O bonds. The covalency in the ferroelectric phase is mainly induced by an enhancement of hybridization between Ti 3d and O 2p, and between Pb 6…
This paper contains results of investigations of inhomogeneous states caused by the coexistence of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases in lead-zirconate-titanate based solid solutions. The domains of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases with sizes of the order of 20 to 30 nm coexist in the bulk of the samples due to a small difference in the free energies of the phases. The coherent character of interphase boundaries leads to the concentration of elastic stresses along these boundaries. Elastic stresses cause the local decomposition of the solid solution due to the circumstance th…
Layered ferromagnetic-piezoelectric composites show mechanical strain mediated electromagnetic coupling. Here we discuss dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ferrite-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and lanthanum manganite-PZT samples. Results of our investigations on dielectric and pyroelectric properties of multilayer ferromagnetic-piezoelectric are presented here. Lead zircinate-titanate PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) was used for the piezoelectric phase in all the structures. The following materials were used for the ferromagnetic component: nickel-zinc ferrites Ni0.9Zn 0.1Fe2O4 (NFO1) and Ni0.8Zn0…
The direct magnetoelectric (ME) effect resulting from the polarization changes induced in a ferroelectric film by the application of a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic substrate is described using the nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is shown that the ME response strongly depends on the initial strain state of the film. The ME polarization coefficient of the heterostructures involving Terfenol-D substrates and compressively strained lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, which stabilize in the out-of-plane polarization state, is found to be comparable to that of bulk PZT/Terfenol-D laminate c…
We have investigated the magnetoelectric (ME) effect in layered composite rings subjected to circumferential AC magnetic fields and DC magnetic fields in radial, axial or circumferential directions. Bilayer samples were obtained combining different grades of commercial Mn-Zn ferrites or Ni-Zn ferrites with commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Mn-Zn ferrites with low magnetostriction saturation () and low magneto-crystalline anisotropy constants show high ME capabilities when associated with PZT in ring structures. In certain conditions, these ME effects are higher than those obtained with…
For conventional plate and disc layered magnetoelectric (ME) composites, the ME effect appeared under low bias magnetic fields, which caused by line magnetostriction. In this paper, we present a new structure ME composites, cylindrical bilayered composites. Unexpectedly, the ME effect also appeared under high magnetic fields in this cylindrical bilayered Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) composite. We thought this ME effect caused by volume magnetostriction. The results showed that the ME voltage coefficient of the cylindrical bilayered composite of Ni-PZT was the sum of aE(l) caused by line ma…
The observation of strong magnetoelectric effects is reported in thick film bilayers and multilayers of ferrite-lead titanate zirconate (PZT) and lanthanum nanganite-PZT. The ferrites used in our studies included pure and zinc substituted cobalt-, nickel- and lithium ferrites. Samples were prepared by sintering 10-40 mm thick films obtained by tape-casting. Measurements of ME voltage coefficients at 10-1000 Hz indicated a giant ME effect in nickel ferrite-PZT, but a relatively weak coupling in other ferrite-PZT and manganite-PZT systems. Multilayers prepared by hot pressing was found to show a…
The structure and dielectric properties of 6% $\rm{Sr}^{2+}$-substituted, modified Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic, with composition $[\rm{Pb}_{0.94}\rm{Sr}_{0.06}][(\rm{Mn}_{1/3}\rm{Sb}_{2/3})_{0.05}(\rm{Zr}_{0.54}\rm{Ti}_{0.46})_{0.95}]O_3$ and lead manganese antimonite as an additional dopant, synthesized by ceramic route have been investigated in a frequency range from 50Hz to 1MHz and in a temperature range between room temperature and 633K. The scanning electron micrograph of the sample taken at the room temperature confirms the formation of a fairly homogenous struct…
We report the use of high magnetomechanical coupling ferrites in magnetoelectric (ME) layered composites. Bilayer samples combining $(Ni_{0.973} Co_{0.027})_{1-x} Zn_x Fe_2 O_4$ ferrites ($x = 0-0.5$) synthesized by non conventional reactive Spark Plasma Sintering and commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) were characterized in term of ME voltage coefficients measured at sub-resonant frequency. Strong ME effects are obtained and we show that an annealing at 1000$^\circ$C and a quenching in air improve the piezomagnetic behavior of Zn-rich compositions. A theoretical model that predicts the M…
Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, an influence of the misfit strain and surface screening charges, as well as the role of the flexoelectric effect, have been studied by numerical modelling in the case of a rhombohedral lead zirconate-titanate ferroelectric/ferroelastic thin film with an anisotropic misfit produced by a substrate. It was established that the magnitude and sign of the misfit strain influence the domain structure and predominant directions of the polarization vector, providing misfit-dependent phases with different favourable polarization components. Whilst strong enou…
