We have examined the recently detected very high energy (VHE) pulsed radiation from the Crab pulsar. According to the observational evidence, the observed emission (>25GeV) peaks at the same phase with the optical spectrum. Considering the cyclotron instability, we show that the pitch angle becomes non-vanishing leading to the efficient synchrotron mechanism near the light cylinder surface. The corresponding spectral index of the emission equals -1/2. By studying the inverse Compton scattering and the curvature radiation, it is argued that the aforementioned mechanisms do not contribute to the VHE radiation detected by MAGIC.

The parameters of the Crab pulsar, including magnetic field, inclination angle, and particle density are calculated. We study dynamics of drift waves in the pair plasma of pulsar magnetosphere. It is shown that nonlinear of the drift waves with plasma particles leads to the formation of small scale structures. We show that cyclotron instability developed within these nonlinear structures can be responsible for the formation of nanoshots discovered in the radio emission of the Crab pulsar.
The Fermi space telescope has detected over 100 pulsars. These discoveries have ushered in a new era of pulsar astrophysics at gamma-ray energies. Gamma-ray pulsars, regardless of whether they are young, old, radio-quiet etc, all exhibit a seemingly unifying characteristic: a spectral energy distribution which takes the form of a power law with an exponential cut-off occurring between ~1 and ~10 GeV. On 2006 August 23 the Crab Pulsar underwent a glitch, that was reported by the Jodrell Bank and the Xinjiang radio observatories. Neither data are available to the public. In the present paper a self-consistent theory, interpreting the VERITAS observations of the very high energy pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar is considered. The photon spectrum between 10MeV and 400GeV can be described by two power-law functions with the spectral indexes equal to 2 and 3.8. The source of the pulsed emission above 10MeV is assumed to be the synchrotron radiation, which is generated near the light cylinder during the quasi-linear stage of the cyclotron instability. Strong gamma-ray flares, of durations of a few days were discovered from within the nebula, while the source was previously expected to be stable in flux on these time scales. We present the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the Crab pulsar above 100 GeV with the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Gamma-ray emission at theses energies was not expected in pulsar models. The detection of pulsed emission above 100 GeV and the absence of an exponential cutoff makes it unlikely that curvature radiation is the primary production mechanism of gamma rays at these energies.
POLAR is a dedicated Gamma-Ray Burst polarimeter making use of Compton-scattering which took data from the second Chinese spacelab, the Tiangong-2 from September 2016 to April 2017. Glitches are important to understand the internal structure of neutron stars. They are studied using timing observations. The best studied neutron star in this respect is the Crab Pulsar. We present updated measurements of the Crab pulsar glitch of 2019 July 23 using a dataset of pulse arrival times spanning $\sim$5 months. On MJD 58687, the pulsar underwent its seventh largest glitch observed to date, characterised by an instantaneous spin-up of $\sim$1 $μ$Hz. Following the glitch the pulsar's rotation frequency relaxed exponentially towards pre-glitch values over a timescale of approximately one week, resulting in a permanent frequency increment of $\sim$0.5 $μ$Hz. We have observed the pulsar in the Crab Nebula at high radio frequencies and high time resolution. We present continuously sampled data at 640-ns time resolution, and individual bright pulses recorded at down to 0.25-ns time resolution. Combining our new data with previous data from our group and from the literature shows the dramatic changes in the pulsar's radio emission between low and high radio frequencies. Our high-time-resolution observations reveal that individual main pulses from the Crab pulsar contain one or more short-lived microbursts. Both the energy and duration of bursts measured above 1 GHz can vary dramatically in less than a millisecond. These fluctuations are too rapid to be caused by propagation through turbulence in the Crab Nebula or the interstellar medium; they must be intrinsic to the radio emission process in the pulsar. In this paper we study the generation of very high energy (VHE) emission in Crab-like pulsars driven by means of the feedback of Cherenkov drift waves on distribution of magnetospheric electrons. We have found that the unstable Cherenkov drift modes lead to the quasi-linear diffusion (QLD), keeping the pitch angles from vanishing, which in turn, maintains the synchrotron mechanism. We report on observations of the Crab pulsar with the MAGIC telescopes. Our data were taken in both monoscopic (> 25GeV) and stereoscopic (> 50GeV) observation modes. Two peaks were detected with both modes and phase-resolved energy spectra were calculated. By comparing with Fermi- LAT measurements, we find that the energy spectrum of the Crab pulsar does not follow a power law with an exponential cutoff, but has an additional hard component, extending up to at least 400 GeV. Slightly more than 30 years ago, Whipple detection of the Crab Nebula was the start of Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy. Since then, gamma-ray observations of this source have continued to provide new surprises and challenges to theories, with the detection of fast variability, pulsed emission up to unexpectedly high energy, and the very recent detection of photons with energy exceeding 1 PeV. In this article we review the impact of gamma-ray observations on our understanding of this extraordinary accelerator.
Salient features of the remarkable band structure seen in the high-frequency interpulse of the Crab pulsar are summarized. It is argued that its source must lie in a current sheet, probably coincident with the open-closed magnetosphere separatrix, and that the mechanism is a form of one-pass free-electron laser. An outward moving electron component in the current sheet interacts with the longitudinal electric field of an inward directed ion-proton Lamgmuir mode. It is an open question whether glitch activity in individual pulsars varies on decadal time-scales. The Crab pulsar has experienced 23 spin-up glitches in the last 36 years, interrupting an otherwise monotonic deceleration. A homogeneous Poisson process, i.e. a process with constant rate, is not sufficient to describe the time-ordered distribution of glitch epochs in the Crab pulsar. We discuss the minimum glitch size of Crab observed by Espinoza et al. (2014). Modelling the crustquake as a trigger mechanism we estimate the size of the broken plate. The plate size obtained, D $\sim 100 m$ is comparable to plate size estimates for PSR J1119--6127. The plate size naturally leads to an estimate of the number of unpinned vortices involved in the glitch, $N \sim 10^{13} $. This number is of the same order in all Crab and Vela pulsar glitches. The mimimum glitch relates the constancy of all these numbers among different pulsars to the basic plate size involved in crust breaking.…
We present the results of the search for a correlation between giant radio pulses (GRPs) at 1.4 GHz and hard X-rays at 15-75 keV from the Crab pulsar. We made simultaneous ground and satellite observations of the Crab pulsar over 12 hours in three occasions in April 2010, March and September 2011, and got a sample of 1.3*10^4 main-pulse phase GRPs. From these samples we have found statistically marginal enhancement (21.5%, 2.70 sigma) of hard X-ray flux within +/- 1.5 degree phase angle of the synchronous peak of main-pulse phase GRPs. The Crab pulsar experienced a major flare in 2010 as observed by Fermi LAT. Observations by the Hubble Space Telescope indicate that the flare was accompanied by a structural change in the anvil region of the Crab Nebula. In the framework of a photometric analysis we reconstruct the energetics of this event. Reconnection zones near the light cylinder are expected to release energy by accelerating beams of electrons, leading to flares of varying amplitude. We report on observations of the polarization of optical and γ-ray photons from the Crab nebula and pulsar system using the Galway Astronomical Stokes Polarimeter (GASP), the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory satellite (Integral). We discuss X-ray and gamma-ray emissions from Crab-like pulsars, PSRs~J0537-6910 and~J0540-6919, in Large Magellanic Cloud. Fermi-LAT observations have resolved the gamma-ray emissions from these two pulsars and found the pulsed emissions from PSR~J0540-6919. The total pulsed radiation in the X-ray/gamma-ray energy bands of PSR~J0540-6919 is observed with the efficiency $η_{J0540}\sim 0.06$ (in 4$π$ sr), which is about a factor of ten larger than $η_{Crab}\sim 0.006$ of the Crab pulsar. We investigate the time-dependent behavior of Crab-like pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) generating a set of models using 4 different initial spin-down luminosities ($L_0 =\{1,0.1,0.01,0.001\} \times L_{0, {\rm Crab}}$), 8 values of magnetic fraction ($η=$ 0.001, 0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.5, 0.9, 0.99, and 0.999, i.e., from fully particle dominated to fully magnetically dominated nebulae), and 3 distinctive ages: 940, 3000, and 9000 years. We study the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Crab Pulsar and its nearby knot in the optical and in the infrared (IR) regime. We present high-quality UBVRIz, as well as adaptive optics JHK_sL' photometry, achieved under excellent conditions with the FORS1 and NAOS/CONICA instruments at the VLT. From 2000 to 2010, monitoring of radio emission from the Crab pulsar at Xinjiang Observatory detected a total of nine glitches. The occurrence of glitches appears to be a random process as described by previous researches. A persistent change in pulse frequency and pulse frequency derivative after each glitch was found. There is no obvious correlation between glitch sizes and the time since last glitch. For these glitches $Δν_{p}$ and $Δ\dotν_{p}$ span two orders of magnitude. We present simulations of the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray light curve of the Crab pulsar as observed by the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The CTA pulse profile of the Crab pulsar is simulated with the specific goal of determining the accuracy of the position of the interpulse. We used a new spectral-fitting technique to identify a subpopulation of 6 narrow-band giant pulses from the Crab pulsar out of a total of 1578. These giant pulses were detected in 77 minutes of observations with the 46-m dish at the Algonquin Radio Observatory at 400-800 MHz. The narrow-band giant pulses consist of both main- and inter-pulses, thereby being more likely to be caused by an intrinsic emission mechanism as opposed to a propagation effect. We report on X-ray emission properties of the Crab pulsar(PSR B0531+21) using observations by Insight-HXMT during its first year after launch. We obtained high signal-to-noise profiles in the X-ray energy band 11-250 keV. We have confirmed an increase in the flux ratio of the second peak over the main peak with increasing energy, consistent with other missions. We investigate the emission mechanism and evolution of pulsars that are associated with supernova remnants. We used imaging techniques in both the optical and near infrared, using images with very good seeing (<0.6) to study the immediate surroundings of the Crab pulsar. The glitch occurred around MJD 58064 (2017 November 8) when the pulsar underwent an increase in the rotation rate of $Δν= 1.530 \times 10^{-5}$ Hz, corresponding to a fractional increase of $Δν/ ν= 0.516 \times 10^{-6}$ making this event the largest glitch ever observed in this source. Turbulence is triggered upstream by dynamical instability of the wind's oscillating magnetic field, and accelerates non-thermal particles. On impacting the wind termination shock, those particles emit a distinct synchrotron component $F_{ν,\rm flare}$, which is constantly modulated by intermittency of the upstream plasma flow. The Crab pulsar is the only astronomical pulsed source detected above 100 GeV. The emission mechanism of very high energy gamma-ray pulsation is not yet fully understood, although several theoretical models have been proposed. In order to test the new models, we measured the light curve and the spectra of the Crab pulsar with high precision by means of deep observations. We analyzed 135 hours of selected MAGIC data taken between 2009 and 2013 in stereoscopic mode.
