Let Λbe a minimal Kac-Moody group of rank 2 defined over the finite field F_q, where q = p^a with p prime. Let G be the topological Kac-Moody group obtained by completing Λ. An example is G=SL_2(K), where K is the field of formal Laurent series over F_q. The group G acts on its Bruhat-Tits building X, a tree, with quotient a single edge. We construct new examples of cocompact lattices in G, many of them edge-transitive. We then show that if cocompact lattices in G do not contain p-elements, the lattices we construct are the only edge-transitive lattices in G, and that our constructions include the cocompact lattice of minimal covolume in G. We also observe that, with an additional assumption on p-elements in G, the arguments of Lubotzky for the case G = SL_2(K) may be generalised to show that there is a positive lower bound on the covolumes of all lattices in G, and that this minimum is realised by a non-cocompact lattice, a maximal parabolic subgroup of Lambda.
The paper is a short survey of recent developments in the area of word maps evaluated on groups and algebras. It is aimed to pose questions relevant to Kac--Moody theory.
We go back and forth between, on the one hand, presentations of arithmetic and Kac-Moody groups and, on the other hand, presentations of profinite groups, deducing along the way new results on both.
In the present article we introduce and study a class of topological reflection spaces that we call Kac-Moody symmetric spaces. These generalize Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. We observe that in a non-spherical Kac-Moody symmetric space there exist pairs of points that do not lie on a common geodesic; however, any two points can be connected by a chain of geodesic segments. We moreover classify maximal flats in Kac-Moody symmetric spaces and study their intersection patterns, leading to a classification of global and local automorphisms. Unlike Riemannian symmetric spaces, no…
We prove the finiteness of formal analogues of the spherical function (Spherical Finiteness), the ${\mathbf c}$-function (Gindikin-Karpelevich Finiteness), and obtain a formal analogue of Harish-Chandra's limit (Approximation Theorem) relating spherical and ${\mathbf c}$-function in the setting of $p$-adic Kac-Moody groups. The finiteness theorems imply that the formal analogue of the Gindikin-Karpelevich integral is well defined in local Kac-Moody settings. These results extend the Braverman-Garland-Kazhdan-Patnaik's affine Gindikin-Karpelevich finiteness theorems and provide an algebraic ana…
For a split Kac-Moody group G over an ultrametric field K, S. Gaussent and the author defined an ordered affine hovel on which the group acts; it generalizes the Bruhat-Tits building which corresponds to the case when G is reductive. This construction was generalized by C. Charignon to the almost split case when K is a local field. We explain here these constructions with more details and prove many new properties e.g. that the hovel of an almost split Kac-Moody group is an ordered affine hovel, as defined in a previous article.
We construct a map from the classifying space of a discrete Kac-Moody group over the algebraic closure of the field with p elements to the classifying space of a complex topological Kac-Moody group and prove that it is a homology equivalence at primes q different from p. This generalises a classical result of Quillen-Friedlander-Mislin for Lie groups. As an application, we construct unstable Adams operations for general Kac-Moody groups compatible with the Frobenius homomorphism. In contrast to the Lie case, the homotopy fixed points of these unstable Adams operations cannot be realized at q a…
In this paper we discuss the isomorphism types of parabolic subgroups in Kac-Moody groups. The results have applications in the study of topology of Kac-Moody groups and their classifying spaces.
Tits has defined Kac-Moody and Steinberg groups over commutative rings, providing infinite dimensional analogues of the Chevalley-Demazure group schemes. Here we establish simple explicit presentations for all Steinberg and Kac-Moody groups whose Dynkin diagrams are hyperbolic and simply laced. Our presentations are analogues of the Curtis-Tits presentation of the finite groups of Lie type. When the ground ring is finitely generated, we derive the finite presentability of the Steinberg group, and similarly for the Kac-Moody group when the ground ring is a Dedekind domain of arithmetic type. Th…
We provide explicit generators and relations for the affine Kac-Moody groups, as well as a realization of them as (twisted) loop groups by means of Galois descent considerations.
We investigate smooth representations of complete Kac-Moody groups. We approach representation theory via geometry, in particular, the group action on the Davis realisation of its Bruhat-Tits building. Our results include an estimate on projective dimension, localisation theorem, unimodularity and homological duality.
In this paper we construct a new "pro-p-complete" topological Kac-Moody group and compare it to various known topological Kac-Moody groups. We come across this group by investigating the process of completion of groups with BN-pairs. We would like to know whether the completion of such a group admits a BN-pair. We give explicit criteria for this to happen.
Kac--Moody groups $G$ over $\mathbb{R}$ have been conjectured to occur as symmetry groups of supergravity theories dimensionally reduced to dimensions less than 3, and their integral forms $G(\mathbb{Z})$ conjecturally encode quantized symmetries. In this review paper, we briefly introduce the conjectural symmetries of Kac--Moody groups in supergravity as well as the known evidence for these conjectures. We describe constructions of Kac--Moody groups over $\R$ and $\Z$ using certain choices of fundamental modules that are considered to have physical relevance. Eisenstein series on certain fini…
