The density functional approach in the Kohn-Sham approximation is widely used to study properties of many-electron systems. Due to the nonlinearity of the Kohn-Sham equations, the general self-consistence searching method involves iterations with alternate solving of the Poisson and Schrödinger equations. One of problems of such an approach is that the charge distribution renewed by means of the Schrödinger equation solution does not conform to boundary conditions of Poisson equation for Coulomb potential. The resulting instability or even divergence of iterations manifests itself most appreciably in the case of infinitely extended systems. The published attempts to deal with this problem are reduced in fact to abandoning the original iterative method and replacing it with some approximate calculation scheme, which is usually semi-empirical and does not permit to evaluate the extent of deviation from the exact solution. In this work, we realize the iterative scheme of solving the Kohn-Sham equations for extended systems with inhomogeneous electron gas, which is based on eliminating the long-range character of Coulomb interaction as the cause of tight coupling between charge distribution and boundary conditions. The suggested algorithm is employed to calculate energy spectrum, self-consistent potential, and electrostatic capacitance of the semi-infinite degenerate electron gas bounded by infinitely high barrier, as well as the work function and surface energy of simple metals in the jellium model. The difference between self-consistent Hartree solutions and those taking into account the exchange-correlation interaction is analyzed. The case study of the metal-semiconductor tunnel contact shows this method being applied to an infinitely extended system where the steady-state current can flow.
A bivariate perspective on Kohn-Sham density functional theory is proposed, treating potential and density as simultaneous independent variables, and used to make fruitful connection between Lieb's rigorous foundational framework and practical Kohn-Sham computation. Support is found for potential-mixing schemes, but not for more standard density-mixing. Under presumably-generic conditions, total energy can be lowered from one iteration to the next. Density, intrinsic and total energy are analytic functions of the noninteracting potential on the open set of potentials having a single isolated g…
We formulate a set of equations that facilitate an exact numerical solution of the Kohn-Sham potential for a finite Hubbard chain with nearest neighbour hopping and arbitrary site potentials. The approach relies on a mapping of the non-interacting Kohn-Sham ground state wave function onto the exact interacting system wavefunction and two interconnected self-consistent cycles. The self-consistent cycles are performed within the framework of the Kohn-Sham non-interacting system without any direct reference to the interacting system. The first self-consistent cycle updates the mapping of the non-…
Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wavefunction theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively-interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a non-interacting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively-interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wavefunctions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wavefunction theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems -- namely…
Atomic forces formulation based on the Dirac-Kohn-Sham equation and flexible (APW+lo/LAPW)+LO basis set is presented. The formulation was implemented in the code FlapwMBPT and allows a user to easily switch between different basis functions of the augmentation type (APW or LAPW) and between different kind of local orbitals. Similar to the work (Phys.Rev.B 91 (2015) 035105), the implementation takes into account small discontinuities of the wave functions, density, and potential at the muffin-tin sphere boundaries. Applications to the materials with strong relativistic effects, such as $α$-Uran…
We incorporate in the Kohn-Sham self consistent equation a trained neural-network projection from the charge density distribution to the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential $n \rightarrow V_{\rm Hxc}$ for possible numerical approach to the exact Kohn-Sham scheme. The potential trained through a newly developed scheme enables us to evaluate the total energy without explicitly treating the formula of the exchange-correlation energy. With a case study of a simple model we show that the well-trained neural-network $V_{\rm Hxc}$ achieves accuracy for the charge density and total energy out of th…
We address the problem of bounding rigorously the errors in the numerical solution of the Kohn-Sham equations due to (i) the finiteness of the basis set, (ii) the convergence thresholds in iterative procedures, (iii) the propagation of rounding errors in floating-point arithmetic. In this contribution, we compute fully-guaranteed bounds on the solution of the non-self-consistent equations in the pseudopotential approximation in a plane-wave basis set. We demonstrate our methodology by providing band structure diagrams of silicon annotated with error bars indicating the combined error.

We present an accurate and efficient formulation of the stress tensor for real-space Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Specifically, while employing a local formulation of the electrostatics, we derive a linear-scaling expression for the stress tensor that is applicable to simulations with unit cells of arbitrary symmetry, semilocal exchange-correlation functionals, and Brillouin zone integration. In particular, we rewrite the contributions arising from the self energy and the nonlocal pseudopotential energy to make them amenable to the real-space finite-difference discre…
For properties of interacting electron systems, Kohn-Sham (KS) theory is often favored over many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) owing to its low computational cost. However, the exact KS potential can be challenging to approximate, for example in the presence of localized subsystems where the exact potential is known to exhibit pathological features such as spatial steps. By modeling two electrons, each localized in a distinct potential well, we illustrate that the step feature has no counterpart in MBPTs (including Hartree-Fock and GW) or hybrid methods involving Fock exchange because the sp…
A numerical scheme for solving the time-evolution of wave functions under the time dependent Kohn-Sham equation has been developed. Since the effective Hamiltonian depends on the wave functions, the wave functions and the effective Hamiltonian should evolve consistently with each other. For this purpose, a self-consistent loop is required at every time-step for solving the time-evolution numerically, which is computationally expensive. However, in this paper, we develop a different approach expressing a formal solution of the TD-KS equation, and prove that it is possible to solve the TD-KS equ…
We analyze the inverse problem of Density Functional Theory using a regularized variational method. First, we show that given $k$ and a target density $ρ$, there exist potentials having $k^{\text{th}}$ bound mixed states which densities are arbitrarily close to $ρ$. The state can be chosen pure in dimension $d=1$ and without interactions, and we provide numerical and theoretical evidence consistently leading us to conjecture that the same pure representability result holds for $d=2$, but that the set of pure-state $v$-representable densities is not dense for $d=3$. Finally, we present an inver…
