The radiance and Doppler-shift distributions across the solar network provide observational constraints of two-dimensional modeling of transition-region emission and flows in coronal funnels. Two different methods, dispersion plots and average-profile studies, were applied to investigate these distributions. In the dispersion plots, we divided the entire scanned region into a bright and a dark part according to an image of Fe xii; we plotted intensities and Doppler shifts in each bin as determined according to a filtered intensity of Si ii. We also studied the difference in height variations of the magnetic field as extrapolated from the MDI magnetogram, in and outside network. For the average-profile study, we selected 74 individual cases and derived the average profiles of intensities and Doppler shifts across the network. The dispersion plots reveal that the intensities of Si ii and C iv increase from network boundary to network center in both parts. However, the intensity of Ne viii shows different trends, namely increasing in the bright part and decreasing in the dark part. In both parts, the Doppler shift of C iv increases steadily from internetwork to network center. The average-profile study reveals that the intensities of the three lines all decline from the network center to internetwork region. The binned intensities of Si ii and Ne viii have a good correlation. We also find that the large blue shift of Ne viii does not coincide with large red shift of C iv. Our results suggest that the network structure is still prominent at the layer where Ne viii is formed in the quiet Sun, and that the magnetic structures expand more strongly in the dark part than in the bright part of this quiet Sun region.
Spatially averaged (> 50'') EUV spectral lines in the transition region of solar quiet regions are known to be redshifted. Because the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is unclear, we require additional physical information on the lower corona for limiting the theoretical models. To acquire this information, we measured the Doppler shifts over a wide coronal temperature range (log T[K]=5.7--6.3) using the spectroscopic data taken by the Hinode EUV Imaging Spectrometer. By analyzing the data over the center-to-limb variations covering the meridian from the south to the north pole, we success…
The last solar minimum has been unusually quiet compared to the previous minima (since space-based radiometric measurements are available). The Sun's magnetic flux was substantially lower during this minimum. Some studies also show that the total solar irradiance during the minimum after cycle 23 may have dropped below the values known from the two minima prior to that. For chromospheric and coronal radiation, the situation is less clear-cut. The Sun's 10.7\,cm flux shows a decrease of $\sim4\%$ during the solar minimum in 2008 compared to the previous minimum, but \ion{Ca}{II} K does not. Her…
The hydrogen Lyman lines provide important diagnostic information about the dynamics of the chromosphere, but there have been few systematic studies of their variability during flares. We investigate Doppler shifts in these lines in several flares, and use these to calculate plasma speeds. We use spectral data from the Multiple EUV Grating Spectrograph B (MEGS-B) detector of the Extreme-Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory. MEGS-B obtains full-disk spectra of the Sun at a resolution of 0.1nm in the range 37-105 nm, which we analyse using three i…
Coronal Holes (CHs) have subdued intensity and net blueshifts when compared to Quiet Sun (QS) at coronal temperatures. At transition region temperatures, such differences are obtained for regions with identical photospheric absolute magnetic flux density ($\vert$B$\vert$). In this work, we use spectroscopic measurements of the \car 1334~Å line from Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), formed at chromospheric temperatures, to investigate the intensity, Doppler shift, line width, skew, and excess kurtosis variations with $\vert$B$\vert$. We find the intensity, Doppler shift, and line wi…
Aims. We seek indications or evidence of transmission/conversion of magnetoacoustic waves at the magnetic canopy, as a result of its impact on the properties of the wave field of the photosphere and chromosphere. Methods. We use cross-wavelet analysis to measure phase differences between intensity and Doppler signal oscillations in the Halpha, CaII H, and G-band.We use the height of the magnetic canopy to create appropriate masks to separate internetwork (IN) and magnetic canopy regions. We study wave propagation and differences between these two regions. Results. The magnetic canopy affects w…
Using data from the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager, we report on the amplitudes and phase relations of oscillations in quiet-Sun, plage, umbra and the polarity inversion line (PIL) of an active region NOAA$\#$11158. We employ Fourier, wavelet and cross correlation spectra analysis. Waves with 5-minute periods are observed in umbra, PIL and plage with common phase values of $ϕ(v,I)=\fracπ{2}$, $ϕ(v,B_{los})=-\fracπ{2}$. In addition, $ϕ(I,B_{los})=π$ in plage are observed. These phase values are consistent with slow standing or fast standing surface sausage wave modes. The line width variations, a…
The solar atmosphere is extremely dynamic, and many important phenomena develop on small scales that are unresolved in observations with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). For correct calibration and interpretation of the observations, it is very important to investigate the effects of small-scale structures and dynamics on the HMI observables, such as Doppler shift, continuum intensity, spectral line depth, and width. We use 3D radiative hydrodynamics simulations of the upper turbulent convective layer and the atmosphere of the Sun, …
Context. Emission lines formed in the transition region and corona show dominantly redshifts and blueshifts, respectively. Aims. We investigate the Doppler shifts in a 3D radiation MHD model of the quiet Sun and compare these to observed properties. We concentrate on Si IV 1394 A originating in the transition region and examine the Doppler shifts of several other spectral lines at different formation temperatures. Methods. We construct a radiation MHD model extending from the upper convection zone to the lower corona using the MURaM code. In this quiet Sun model the magnetic field is self-cons…
In the present paper, we use Si IV 1393.755 Å spectral line observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) in the quiet-Sun to determine physical nature of the solar transition region (TR) oscillations. We analyze the properties of these oscillations using wavelet tools (e.g., power, cross-power, coherence, and phase difference) along with the stringent noise model (i.e., power-law + constant). We estimate the period of the intensity and Doppler velocity oscillations at each chosen location in the quiet-Sun (QS) and quantify the distribution of the statistically significant power…
Observation of High-speed Outflow on Plume-like Structures of the Quiet Sun and Coronal Holes with SDO/AIA
A comparison between a Coronal Hole (CH) and the adjacent Quiet-Sun (QS) has been performed using spectroscopic diagnostics of Hinode/ the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS). Coronal funnels play an important role in the formation and propagation of the nascent fast solar wind. Applying Gaussian fitting procedures to the observed line profiles, Doppler velocity, intensity, line width (FWHM) and electron density have been estimated over CH and adjacent QS region of a North Polar Coronal Hole (NPCH). The aim of this study is to identify the coronal funnels based on spectral signatures. Excess width …
The focus of this investigation is to quantify the conversion of magnetic to thermal energy initiated by a quiet Sun cancellation event and to explore the resulting dynamics from the interaction of the opposite polarity magnetic features. We used imaging spectroscopy in the H$α$ line, along with spectropolarimetry in the \ion{Fe}{I} 6173~Å and \ion{Ca}{II} 8542~Å lines from the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST) to study a reconnection-related cancellation and the appearance of a quiet Sun Ellerman bomb (QSEB). We observed, for the first time, QSEB signature in both the wings and core of the \ion{F…
Convective motions in the solar atmosphere cause spectral lines to become asymmetric and shifted in wavelength. For photospheric lines, this differential Doppler shift varies from the solar disk center to the limb. Precise and comprehensive observations of the convective blueshift and its center-to-limb variation improve our understanding of the atmospheric hydrodynamics and ensuing line formation, and provide the basis to refine 3D models of the solar atmosphere. We performed systematical spectroscopic measurements of the convective blueshift of the quiet Sun with the Laser Absolute Reference…
Aims: To study the heating of solar chromospheric magnetic and nonmagnetic regions by acoustic and magnetoacoustic waves, the deposited acoustic-energy flux derived from observations of strong chromospheric lines is compared with the total integrated radiative losses. Methods: A set of 23 quiet-Sun and weak-plage regions were observed in the Mg II k and h lines with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The deposited acoustic-energy flux was derived from Doppler velocities observed at two different geometrical heights corresponding to the middle and upper chromosphere. A set of sca…
We derive horizontal fluid motions on the solar surface over large areas covering the quiet-Sun magnetic network from local correlation tracking of convective granules imaged in continuum intensity and Doppler velocity by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). From these we calculate horizontal divergence, vertical component of vorticity, and kinetic helicity of fluid motions. We study the correlations between fluid divergence and vorticity, and that between vorticity (kinetic helicity) and magnetic field. We find that the vorticity (kinetic he…
Ubiquitous small-scale vortices have recently been found in the lower atmosphere of the quiet Sun in state-of-the-art solar observations and in numerical simulations. We investigate the characteristics and temporal evolution of a granular-scale vortex and its associated upflows through the photosphere and chromosphere of a quiet Sun internetwork region. We analyzed high spatial and temporal resolution ground- and spaced-based observations of a quiet Sun region. The observations consist of high-cadence time series of wideband and narrowband images of both H-alpha 6563 A and Ca II 8542 A lines o…
We analyze the evolution of shock waves in high-resolution 3D radiative MHD simulations of the quiet Sun and their synthetic emission characteristics. The simulations model the dynamics of a 12.8x12.8x15.2 Mm quiet-Sun region (including a 5.2 Mm layer of the upper convection zone and a 10 Mm atmosphere from the photosphere to corona) with an initially uniform vertical magnetic field of 10 G, naturally driven by convective flows. We synthesize the Mg II and C II spectral lines observed by the IRIS satellite and EUV emission observed by the SDO/AIA telescope. Synthetic observations are obtained …
Recently, the characteristics, and dynamics of a persistent 1.7 h vortex flow, resembling a small-scale tornado, have been investigated with ground-base and space-based observations and for the first time in the Ha line centre. The vortex flow showed significant substructure in the form of several intermittent chromospheric swirls. We investigate the oscillatory behaviour of various physical parameters in the vortex area, with a 2D wavelet analysis performed within the vortex flow area and in a quiet-Sun region (for comparison), using the same high spatial and temporal resolution Ha and Ca II …
Strongly Doppler-shifted Stokes $V$ profiles have been detected in the quiet Sun with the IMaX instrument on-board the SUNRISE stratospheric balloon-borne telescope. High velocities are required in order to produce such signals, hence these events have been interpreted as jets, although other sources are also possible. We aim to characterize the variation of the main properties of these events (occurrence rate, lifetime, size and velocities) with their position on the solar disk between disk centre and the solar limb. These events have been identified in Sunrise/IMaX data according to the same…
Aims. We perform a detailed observational analysis of network jets to understand their kinematics, rotational motion and underlying triggering mechanism(s). We have analyzed the quiet-Sun (QS) data. Methods. IRIS high resolution imaging and spectral observations (SJI: Si iv 1400.0 Å, Raster: Si iv 1393.75 Å) are used to analyze the omnipresent rotating network jets in the transition-region (TR). In addition, we have also used Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamic Observation (SDO) observations. Results. The statistical analysis of fifty-one network jets is performed to under…
Thermodynamic properties of small flares in the quiet Sun observed by H$α$ and EUV: plasma motion of the chromosphere and time evolution of temperature/emission measure
Vortex flows can foster a variety of wave modes. A recent oscillatory analysis of a persistent 1.7 h vortex flow with a significant substructure has suggested the existence of various types of waves within it. We investigate the nature and characteristics of waves within this quiet-Sun vortex flow to better understand its physics and dynamics. We used a cross-wavelet spectral analysis between pairs of Ha and Ca II 8542 intensity time series at different wavelengths and, hence, atmospheric heights, acquired with CRISP/SST, as well as the derived Ha Doppler velocity and full width at half maximu…

A giant solar filament was visible on the solar surface from 2011 Nov. 8-23. The filament stretched over more than half a solar diameter. Multiwavelength data from the SDO instrument AIA (171, 193, 304, and 211Å) were used to examine counter-streaming flows within the spine of the filament. H$α$ images from the Kanzelhöhe Solar Observatory provided context information. We apply local correlation tracking (LCT) to a two-hour time series on 2011 Nov. 16 of the AIA images to derive horizontal flow velocities of the filament. To enhance the contrast of the AIA images, noise adaptive fuzzy equaliza…
Recent observations from Parker Solar Probe have revealed that the solar wind has a highly variable structure. How this complex behaviour is formed in the solar corona is not yet known, since it requires omnipresent fluctuations, which constantly emit material to feed the wind. In this article we analysed 14 upflow regions in the solar corona to find potential sources for plasma flow. The upflow regions were derived from spectroscopic data from the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode determining their Doppler velocity and defining regions which have blueshifts stronger than $-6\,km\,…
A time-distance helioseismic technique, similar to the one used by Ilonidis et al (2011), is applied to two independent numerical models of subsurface sound-speed perturbations to determine the spatial resolution and accuracy of phase travel time shift measurements. The technique is also used to examine pre-emergence signatures of several active regions observed by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) and the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (HMI). In the context of similar measurements of quiet sun regions, three of the five studied active regions show strong phase travel time shifts several hours …
