We propose a method to synthesize the inverse Compton (IC) gamma-ray image of a supernova remnant starting from the radio (or hard X-ray) map and using results of the spatially resolved X-ray spectral analysis. The method is successfully applied to SN 1006. We found that synthesized IC gamma-ray images of SN 1006 show morphology in nice agreement with that reported by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The good correlation found between the observed very-high energy gamma-ray and X-ray/radio appearance can be considered as an evidence that the gamma-ray emission of SN 1006 observed by H.E.S.S. is leptonic in origin, though the hadronic origin may not be excluded.
In this paper, we consider the impact of Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) on the $γ-γ$ opacity of the Universe to VHE-gamma rays, compared to the effect of local under-densities (voids) of the Extragalactic Background Light, and on the Compton scattering process. Both subluminal and superluminal modifications of the photon dispersion relation are considered. In the subluminal case, LIV effects may result in a significant reduction of the $γ-γ$ opacity for photons with energies $\gtrsim 10$ TeV. However, the effect is not expected to be sufficient to explain the apparent spectral hardening of…
A few radio galaxies have been discovered to emit GeV-TeV gamma-ray emission in spite of relatively large viewing angles of their jets. We consider a scenario in which such large angle gamma-ray emission is preferentially produced by isotropically distributed relativistic electrons in the kpc scale jet. These electrons comptonize soft, non-thermal radiation from the inner jet which is beamed due to its relativistic motion. In terms of such a model, we interpret recently discovered TeV gamma-ray emission from the kpc scale jets in Cen~A. Interestingly, due to the geometry of the inverse Compton…
The recent discovery of gravitational waves from GW170817, associated with a short Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) at a distance of $40$Mpc, has demonstrated that short GRBs can occur locally and at a reasonable rate. Furthermore, gravitational waves enable us to detect close by GRBs, even when we are observing at latitudes far from the jet's axis. We consider here Compton echoes, the scattered light from the prompt and afterglow emission. Compton echoes, an as yet undetected counterpart of GRBs, peak in X-rays and maintain a roughly constant flux for hundreds to thousands of years after the burst. Thou…
Cosmic rays interacting with gas and photon fields in the Galaxy produce interstellar gamma-ray emission (IGE), which accounts for almost 50% of the photons detected at gamma-ray energies. Models of this IGE have to be very accurate for interpreting the high-quality observations by present gamma-ray telescopes, such as Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Standard models of IGE, used as reference models for analyses of the Fermi LAT data, show spatial discrepancies with respect to the data, underlining the necessity of more realistic models. The same CR electrons that produce the inverse-Compton …
We present a self-consistent way of modeling synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) effects in gamma-ray burst afterglows, with and without approximated Klein-Nishina suppressed scattering. We provide an analytic approximation of our results, so that it can be incorporated into the afterglow modeling code \texttt{boxfit}, which is currently based on pure synchrotron emission. We discuss the changes in spectral shape and evolution due to SSC effects, and comment on how these changes affect physical parameters derived from broadband modeling. We show that SSC effects can have a profound impact on the sh…
The afterglow emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is believed to originate from a relativistic blast wave driven into the circumburst medium. Although the afterglow emission from radio up to X-ray frequencies is thought to originate from synchrotron radiation emitted by relativistic, non-thermal electrons accelerated by the blast wave, the origin of the emission at high energies (HE; $\gtrsim$~GeV) remains uncertain. The recent detection of sub-TeV emission from GRB~190114C by MAGIC raises further debate on what powers the very high-energy (VHE; $\gtrsim 300$GeV) emission. Here, we explore t…
Although the physical origin of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission is still controversial, synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons is a promising mechanism. It is believed that electrons are accelerated continuously by ultra-relativistic shocks or magnetic reconnections. At the same time, these electrons will be cooled via several processes (mainly adiabatic expansion, synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering (ICS)), which regulate the distribution of electrons. An extra high-energy spectrum component is expected to be induced by ICS. However, the gamma-gamma annihilati…
Dark matter (DM) can give observable effects decaying or annihilating with production of electrons or/and photons. Such probability was widely researched for our Galaxy. Here we consider one aspect of similar effect for Andromeda galaxy. We explicitly estimate the energy of the photon of the medium experiencing Inverse Compton (IC) scattering off electron in halo. These photons can be registered by different experiments. Dark matter annihilation or decay could be the source of high energy electrons in halo, though the source could be of other origins too (e.g. running neutron stars). Because o…
Aimed at progress in mega-electron volt (MeV) gamma-ray astronomy, which has not yet been well-explored, Compton telescope missions with a variety of detector concepts have been proposed so far. One of the key techniques for these future missions is an event reconstruction algorithm that is able to determine the scattering orders of multiple Compton scattering events and to identify events in which gamma rays escape from the detectors before they deposit all of their energies. We revisit previous event reconstruction methods and propose a modified algorithm based on a probabilistic method. Fir…
The gamma-ray emission detected from several microquasars can be produced by relativistic electrons emitting through inverse Compton scattering. In particular, the GeV emission detected from Cygnus X-3, and its orbital phase dependence, strongly suggest that the emitting electrons are accelerated in a relativistic jet, and that the optical companion provides the dominant target. Here, we study the effects related to particle transport in the framework of the relativistic jet scenario. We find that even in the most compact binary systems, with parameters similar to Cygnus X-3, particle transpor…
An advanced Compton telescope appears to be the best instrument concept for the next generation gamma-ray space observatory in the MeV range. A first prototype of advanced Compton telescope is being developed to match the constraints of a nano satellite mission, with the scientific objective of measuring gamma-ray burst prompt emission polarization. Our instrumental developments for this project are focusing on the position-sensitive calorimeter module, made of a monolithic inorganic CeBr$_3$ scintillator read by a pixelated photodetector. 3D position reconstruction is obtained by deep-learnin…
The detection of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) X-ray emission line is important for studying the GRB physics and constraining the GRB redshift. Since the line-like feature in the GRB X-ray spectrum was first reported in 1999, several works on line searching have been published over the past two decades. Even though some observations on the X-ray line-like feature were performed, the significance remains controversial to date. In this paper, we utilize the down-Comptonization mechanism and present the time evolution of the Fe K$α$ line emitted near the GRB central engine. The line intensity decreas…
We examine the possible role of turbulence in feeding the emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Turbulence may develop in a GRB jet as the result of hydrodynamic or current-driven instabilities. The jet carries dense radiation and the turbulence cascade can be damped by Compton drag, passing kinetic fluid energy to photons through scattering. We identify two regimes of turbulence dissipation: (1) "Viscous" - the turbulence cascade is Compton damped on a scale $\ell_{\rm damp}$ greater than the photon mean free path $\ell_\star$. Then turbulence energy is passed to photons via bulk Comptonizatio…
Synchrotron radiation from a decelerating blastwave is a widely accepted model of radio to X-ray afterglow emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). GeV gamma-ray emission detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the duration of which extends beyond the prompt gamma-ray emission phase, is also compatible with broad features of afterglow emission. We revisit the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission model from a decelerating blastwave to fit multiwavelength data from three bright GRBs, namely GRB~190114C, GRB~130427A and GRB~090510. We constrain the afterglow model parameters using t…
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are intense bursts of high-energy photons (prompt emissions) caused by relativistic jets. After the emissions, multi-wavelength afterglows, from radio to very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray, last for more than a few days. In the past three years, the VHE gamma-ray photons from four GRBs (GRBs 180720B, 190114C, 190829A and 201216C) were detected by ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, such as the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). One of them, GRB 190829A, had some peculiar featu…
The black hole transient GRS 1716-249 was monitored from the radio to the gamma-ray band during its 2016-2017 outburst. This paper focuses on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) obtained in 2017 February-March, when GRS 1716-249 was in a bright hard spectral state. The soft gamma-ray data collected with the INTEGRAL/SPI telescope show the presence of a spectral component which is in excess of the thermal Comptonisation emission. This component is usually interpreted as inverse Compton emission from a tiny fraction of non-thermal electrons in the X-ray corona. We find that hybrid thermal/non…

A sensitive survey of the MeV gamma-ray sky is needed to understand important astrophysical problems such as gamma-ray bursts in the early universe, progenitors of Type Ia supernovae, and the nature of dark matter. However, the study has not progressed remarkably since the limited survey by COMPTEL onboard CGRO in the 1990s. Tanimori et al. have developed a Compton camera that tracks the trajectory of each recoil electron in addition to the information obtained by the conventional Compton cameras, leading to superior imaging. This Electron Tracking Compton Camera (ETCC) facilitates accurate re…
Imaging of nuclear gamma-ray lines in the 1-10 MeV range is far from being established in both medical and physical applications. In proton therapy, 4.4 MeV gamma rays are emitted from the excited nucleus of either 12^C^* or 11^B^* and are considered good indicators of dose delivery and/or range verification. Further, in gamma-ray astronomy, 4.4 MeV gamma rays are produced by cosmic ray interactions in the interstellar medium, and can thus be used to probe nucleothynthesis in the universe. In this paper, we present a high-precision image of 4.4 MeV gamma rays taken by newly developed 3-D posit…
Compton scattering in terrestrial gamma-ray flashes detected with the Fermi gamma-ray burst monitor
Current and Future Constraints on Dark Matter from Prompt and Inverse-Compton Photon Emission in the Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-ray Background
We present the joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral analysis in the 0.6-70 keV band of three candidate Compton thick (CT-) AGN selected in the 100-month Swift-BAT catalog. These objects were previously classified as CT-AGNs based on low quality Swift-XRT and Swift-BAT data, and had soft photon indices (Gamma>2.2) that suggested a potential overestimation of the line of sight column density. Thanks to the high-quality NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data we were able to determine that in all three objects the photon index was significantly overestimated, and two out of three sources are reclassified from…
An Electron-Tracking Compton Telescope for a Survey of the Deep Universe by MeV gamma-rays
MeV gamma-rays provide a unique window for the direct measurement of line emissions from radioisotopes, but observations have made little significant progress after COMPTEL/{\it CGRO}. To observe celestial objects in this band, we are developing an electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC), which realizes both bijective imaging spectroscopy and efficient background reduction gleaned from the recoil electron track information. The energy spectrum of the observation target can then be obtained by a simple ON-OFF method using a correctly defined point spread function on the celestial sphere. The pe…
