The two-body dynamics in general relativity has been solved perturbatively using the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation. The evolution of the orbital phase and the emitted gravitational radiation are now known to a rather high order up to O(v^8), v being the characteristic velocity of the binary. The orbital evolution, however, cannot be specified uniquely due to the inherent freedom in the choice of parameter used in the PN expansion as well as the method pursued in solving the relevant differential equations. The goal of this paper is to determine the (dis)agreement between different PN waveform families in the context of initial and advanced gravitational-wave detectors. The waveforms employed in our analysis are those that are currently used by Initial LIGO/Virgo, that is the time-domain PN models TaylorT1, TaylorT2, TaylorT3, TaylorT4 and TaylorEt, the effective one-body (EOB) model, and the Fourier-domain representation TaylorF2. We examine the overlaps of these models with one another and with the prototype effective one-body model (calibrated to numerical relativity simulations, as currently used by initial LIGO) for a number of different binaries at 2PN, 3PN and 3.5PN orders to quantify their differences and to help us decide whether there exist preferred families that are the most appropriate as search templates. We conclude that as long as the total mass remains less than a certain upper limit M_crit, all template families at 3.5PN order (except TaylorT3 and TaylorEt) are equally good for the purpose of detection. The value of M_crit is found to be ~ 12M_Sun for Initial, Enhanced and Advanced LIGO. From a purely computational point of view we recommend that 3.5PN TaylorF2 be used below Mcrit and EOB calibrated to numerical relativity simulations be used for total binary mass M > Mcrit.
The post-Newtonian approximation is useful to discuss gravitational waveforms for binary inspirals. In this note, for retrograde circular orbits in the equatorial plane, we discuss the region of validity of the post-Newtonian approximation by using the gravitational energy flux derived numerically and analytically in the black hole perturbation approach. It is found that the edge of the allowable region behaves quite intricately, including prograde orbits even if we treat higher post-Newtonian orders.
We probe the ability of various types of post-Newtonian(PN)-accurate circular templates to capture inspiral gravitational-wave (GW) signals from compact binaries having tiny orbital eccentricities. The GW signals are constructed by adapting the phasing formalism, available in T. Damour, A. Gopakumar, and B. R. Iyer, [Phys. Rev. D 70, 064028 (2004)], employing the orbital energy and the time-eccentricity to describe the orbital evolution. Using the fitting factor estimates, relevant for the initial LIGO, we show that circular templates, based on the adiabatic TaylorT1, complete adiabatic Taylor…
Observations of transient gravitational wave (GW) events with non-negligible orbital eccentricity can be highly rewarding from astrophysical considerations. Ready-to-use fully analytic frequency domain inspiral GW templates are crucial ingredients to construct eccentric inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform families, required for the detection of such GW events. It turns out that a fully analytic, post-Newtonian (PN) accurate frequency domain inspiral template family, which uses certain post-circular approximation, may only be suitable to model events with initial eccentricities $e_0 \leq 0.2$.We …
We calculate the gravitational waveform for spinning, precessing compact binary inspirals through second post-Newtonian order in the amplitude. When spins are collinear with the orbital angular momentum and the orbits are quasi-circular, we further provide explicit expressions for the gravitational-wave polarizations and the decomposition into spin-weighted spherical-harmonic modes. Knowledge of the second post-Newtonian spin terms in the waveform could be used to improve the physical content of analytical templates for data analysis of compact binary inspirals and for more accurate comparison…
An extreme mass ratio inspiral takes place when a compact stellar object is inspiraling into a supermassive black hole due to gravitational radiation reaction. Gravitational waves (GWs) from this system can be calculated using the Teukolsky equation (TE). In our case, we compute the asymptotic GW fluxes of a spinning body orbiting a Kerr black hole by solving numerically the TE both in time and frequency domain. Our ultimate goal is to produce GW templates for space-based detectors such as LISA.
Recently, a new class of restricted gravitational wave search templates, termed the TaylorEt template was proposed for the search of inspiralling compact binaries. The TaylorEt approximant is different from the usual time-domain post-Newtonian approximants in that it employs the orbital binding energy rather than the orbital frequency or the closely related parameter "x". We perform detailed studies to probe the fitting factors of TaylorEt at 3.5pN for nonspinning comparable mass compact binaries vis-a-vis the TaylorT1, TaylorT4, and TaylorF2 at 3.5pN approximants in LIGO, Advanced LIGO and Vi…
We derive analytic expressions that provide Fourier domain gravitational wave (GW) response function for compact binaries inspiraling along moderately eccentric orbits. These expressions include amplitude corrections to the two GW polarization states that are accurate to the first post-Newtonian (PN) order. Additionally, our fully 3PN accurate GW phase evolution incorporates eccentricity effects up to sixth order at each PN order. Further, we develop a prescription to incorporate analytically the effects of 3PN accurate periastron advance in the GW phase evolution. This is how we provide a rea…
The gravitational wave signal from an inspiralling binary neutron star system will contain detailed information about tidal coupling in the system, and thus, about the internal physics of the neutron stars. To extract this information will require highly accurate models for the gravitational waveform. We present here a calculation of the gravitational wave signal from a binary with quadrupolar tidal interactions which includes all post-1-Newtonian-order effects in both the conservative dynamics and wave generation. We consider stars with adiabatically induced quadrupoles moving in circular orb…
The early inspiral phase of a compact binary coalescence is well modelled by the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation to the orbital energy and gravitational wave flux. The transition from the inspiral phase to the plunge can be defined by the minimum energy circular orbit (MECO). In the extreme mass-ratio limit, up to the highest PN order known, the PN energy equals the energy of the exact Kerr solution. However, for comparable-mass systems the MECO of the PN energy does not exist when bodies have large spins. By including the exact Kerr limit and recently published post-Newtonian terms we extra…
We study the validity of inspiral templates in gravitational wave data analysis with Advanced LIGO sensitivity for low mass binary black holes with total masses of $M \leq 30 Msun$. We mainly focus on the nonspinning system. As our complete inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model ($IMR$), we assume the phenomenological model, "PhenomA", and define our inspiral template model ($Imerg$) by taking the inspiral part into account from $IMR$ up to the merger frequency (fmerg). We first calculate the {\it true} statistical uncertainties using $IMR$ signals and $IMR$ templates. Next, using $IMR$ signa…
We revisit the accuracy of the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation and its region of validity for quasi-circular orbits of a point particle in the Kerr spacetime, by using an analytically known highest post-Newtonian order gravitational energy flux and accurate numerical results in the black hole perturbation approach. It is found that regions of validity become larger for higher PN order results although there are several local maximums in regions of validity for relatively low-PN order results. This might imply that higher PN order calculations are also encouraged for comparable-mass binaries.

We present a prescription to compute the time-domain gravitational wave (GW) polarization states associated with spinning compact binaries inspiraling along quasi-circular orbits. We invoke the orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}$ rather than its Newtonian counterpart ${\bf L_{\rm N}}$ to describe the orbits and the two spin vectors are freely specified in the source frame associated with the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We discuss the various implications of our approach.
In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the…
We derive gravitational waveforms needed to compute the 14th post-Newtonian (14PN) order energy flux for a particle in circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, i.e. $v^{28}$ beyond the leading Newtonian approximation where $v$ is the orbital velocity of a test particle. We investigate the convergence of the energy flux in the PN expansion and suggest a fitting formula which can be used to extract unknown higher order PN coefficients from accurate numerical data for more general orbits around a Kerr black hole. The phase difference between the 14PN waveforms and numerical waveforms aft…
This paper is motivated by the need to improve the post-Newtonian (PN) amplitude accuracy of waveforms for gravitational waves generated by inspiralling compact binaries, both for use in data analysis and in the comparison between post-Newtonian approximations and numerical relativity computations. It presents: (i) the non-linear couplings between multipole moments of general post-Newtonian matter sources up to order 3.5PN, including all contributions from tails, tails-of-tails and the non-linear memory effect; and (ii) the source mass-type octupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binaries up…
Gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries: Angular momentum flux, evolution of the orbital elements and the wave form to the second post-Newtonian order
The tidal deformations of neutron stars within an inspiraling compact binary alter the orbital dynamics, imprinting a signature on the gravitational wave signal. Modeling this signal could be done with numerical-relativity simulations, but these are too computationally expensive for many applications. Analytic post-Newtonian treatments are limited by unknown higher-order nontidal terms. This paper further builds upon the "tidal splicing" model in which post-Newtonian tidal terms are "spliced" onto numerical relativity simulations of black-hole binaries. We improve on previous treatments of tid…
We use equations of motion containing gravitational radiation-reaction terms through 4.5 post-Newtonian order to calculate the late-time eccentricities of inspiraling binary systems of non-spinning compact bodies as they cross the detection threshold of ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers. The initial eccentricities can be as large as 0.999. We find that the final eccentricities are systematically smaller than those predicted by the leading quadrupole approximation, by as much as 30 percent for a 300 solar mass binary crossing the LIGO/Virgo detection threshold at 10 Hz, or eight p…
We compute the quadrupole mode of the gravitational waveform of inspiralling compact binaries at the third and a half post-Newtonian (3.5PN) approximation of general relativity. The computation is performed using the multipolar post-Newtonian formalism, and restricted to binaries without spins moving on quasi-circular orbits. The new inputs mainly include the 3.5PN terms in the mass quadrupole moment of the source, and the control of required subdominant corrections to the contributions of hereditary integrals (tails and non-linear memory effect). The result is given in the form of the quadrup…
We study the performance of various analytical frequency-domain templates for detection and parameter estimation of gravitational waves from spin-precessing, quasi-circular, compact binary inspirals. We begin by assessing the extent to which non-spinning, spin-aligned, and the new (analytical, frequency-domain, small-spin) double-precessing frequency-domain templates can be used to detect signals from such systems. For effective, dimensionless spin values above $0.2$, the use of non-spinning or spin-aligned templates for detection purposes will result in a loss of up to $30%$ of all events, wh…
In the adiabatic post-Newtonian (PN) approximation, the phase evolution of gravitational waves (GWs) from inspiralling compact binaries in quasicircular orbits is computed by equating the change in binding energy with the GW flux. This energy balance equation can be solved in different ways, which result in multiple approximants of the PN waveforms. Due to the poor convergence of the PN expansion, these approximants tend to differ from each other during the late inspiral. Which of these approximants should be chosen as templates for detection and parameter estimation of GWs from inspiraling co…
The gravitational waveform (GWF) generated by inspiralling compact binaries moving in quasi-circular orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) approximation to general relativity. Our motivation is two-fold: (i) To provide accurate templates for the data analysis of gravitational wave inspiral signals in laser interferometric detectors; (ii) To provide the associated spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition to facilitate comparison and match of the high post-Newtonian prediction for the inspiral waveform to the numerically-generated waveforms for the merger and ringdown. This …
Inspiraling compact binaries with non-negligible orbital eccentricities are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming network of GW observatories. In this paper, we present two prescriptions to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate inspiral templates for such binaries. First, we adapt and extend the post-circular scheme of Yunes {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. D 80, 084001 (2009)] to obtain a Fourier-domain inspiral approximant that incorporates the effects of PN-accurate orbital eccentricity evolution. This results in a fully analytic frequency-domain inspiral waveform with Newtonian…
The angular momentum flux from an inspiralling binary system of compact objects moving in quasi-elliptical orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order using the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism. The 3PN angular momentum flux involves the instantaneous, tail, and tail-of-tails contributions as for the 3PN energy flux, and in addition a contribution due to non-linear memory. We average the angular momentum flux over the binary's orbit using the 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of elliptical orbits. The averaged angular momentum flux provides the final input …
Using the gravitational potential and source multipole moments bilinear in the spins, first computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion within the effective field theory (EFT) framework, we complete here the derivation of the dynamical invariants and flux-balance equations, including energy and angular momentum. We use these results to calculate spin-spin effects in the orbital frequency and accumulated phase to NLO for circular orbits. We also derive the linear momentum and center-of-mass fluxes and associated kick-velocity, to the highest relevant PN order. W…
We study the accuracy of the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation and its formal region of validity, by investigating its optimal asymptotic expansion for the quasi-circular, adiabatic inspiral of a point particle into a Schwarzschild black hole. By comparing the PN expansion of the energy flux to numerical calculations in the perturbative Teukolsky formalism, we show that (i) the inclusion of higher multipoles is necessary to establish the accuracy of high-order PN terms, and (ii) the region of validity of PN theory is largest at relative O(1/c^6) (3PN order). The latter result suggests that the…
The future space mission LISA will observe a wealth of gravitational-wave sources at millihertz frequencies. Of these, the extreme-mass-ratio inspirals of compact objects into massive black holes are the only sources that combine the challenges of strong-field complexity with that of long-lived signals. Such signals are found and characterized by comparing them against a large number of accurate waveform templates during data analysis, but the rapid generation of such templates is hindered by computing the $\sim10^3$-$10^5$ harmonic modes in a fully relativistic waveform. We use order-reductio…
Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs), the inspirals of compact objects into supermassive black holes, are important gravitational wave sources for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We study the performance of various post-Newtonian (PN) template families relative to the high precision numerical waveforms in the context of EMRI parameter estimation with LISA. Expressions for the time domain waveforms TaylorT1, TaylorT2, TaylorT3, TaylorT4 and TaylorEt are derived up to 22PN order, i.e $\mathcal{O}(v^{44})$ ($v$ is the characteristic velocity of the binary) beyond the Newtonian term…
