We present a stable and convergent method for solving initial value problems based on the use of differentiation matrices obtained by Lagrange interpolation. This implicit multistep-like method is easy-to-use and performs pretty well in the solution of mildly stiff problems and it can also be applied directly to differential problems in the complex plane.
We present a scalable and efficient iterative solver for high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations of hyperbolic partial differential equations. It is an interplay between domain decomposition methods and HDG discretizations. In particular, the method is a fixed-point approach that requires only independent element-by-element local solves in each iteration. As such, it is well-suited for current and future computing systems with massive concurrencies. We rigorously show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent in the number of iterations for transport and l…

We consider several methods for generating initial guesses when iteratively solving sequences of linear systems, showing that they can be implemented efficiently in GPU-accelerated PDE solvers, specifically solvers for incompressible flow. We propose new initial guess methods based on stabilized polynomial extrapolation and compare them to the projection method of Fischer [15], showing that they are generally competitive with projection schemes despite requiring only half the storage and performing considerably less data movement and communication. Our implementations of these algorithms are f…
It is well known that the usual mixed method for solving the biharmonic eigenvalue problem by decomposing the operator into two Laplacians may generate spurious eigenvalues on non-convex domains. To overcome this difficulty, we adopt a recently developed mixed method, which decomposes the biharmonic equation into three Poisson equations and still recovers the original solution. Using this idea, we design an efficient biharmonic eigenvalue algorithm, which contains only Poisson solvers. With this approach, eigenfunctions can be confined in the correct space and thereby spurious modes in non-con…
We consider a space-time variational formulation of parabolic initial-boundary value problems in anisotropic Sobolev spaces in combination with a Hilbert-type transformation. This variational setting is the starting point for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization that leads to a large global linear system of algebraic equations. We propose and investigate new efficient direct solvers for this system. In particular, we use a tensor-product approach with piecewise polynomial, globally continuous ansatz and test functions. The developed solvers are based on the Bartels-Stewart met…

The recovery of sparse generative models from few noisy measurements is an important and challenging problem. Many deterministic algorithms rely on some form of $\ell_1$-$\ell_2$ minimization to combine the computational convenience of the $\ell_2$ penalty and the sparsity promotion of the $\ell_1$. It was recently shown within the Bayesian framework that sparsity promotion and computational efficiency can be attained with hierarchical models with conditionally Gaussian priors and gamma hyperpriors. The related Gibbs energy function is a convex functional and its minimizer, which is the MAP es…
Maxwell's equations are considered with transparent boundary conditions, for initial conditions and inhomogeneity having support in a bounded, not necessarily convex three-dimensional domain or in a collection of such domains. The numerical method only involves the interior domain and its boundary. The transparent boundary conditions are imposed via a time-dependent boundary integral operator that is shown to satisfy a coercivity property. The stability of the numerical method relies on this coercivity and on an anti-symmetric structure of the discretized equations that is inherited from a wea…

This paper presents a novel and fast solver for the J2-perturbed Lambert problem. The solver consists of an intelligent initial guess generator combined with a differential correction procedure. The intelligent initial guess generator is a deep neural network that is trained to correct the initial velocity vector coming from the solution of the unperturbed Lambert problem. The differential correction module takes the initial guess and uses a forward shooting procedure to further update the initial velocity and exactly meet the terminal conditions. Eight sample forms are analyzed and compared t…
