We present a calculation of the leading SU(3)-breaking $\mathcal{O}(p^3)$-corrections to the electromagnetic moments and charge radius (CR) of the lowest-lying decuplet resonances in covariant chiral perturbation theory. In particular, the magnetic dipole moment (MDM) of the members of the decuplet is predicted fixing the only low-energy constant (LEC) present up to this order with the well measured MDM of the $Ω^-$. We predict $μ_Δ^{++}=6.04(13)$ and $μ_Δ^+=2.84(2)$ which agree well with the current experimental information. For the electric quadrupole moment (EQM) and the CR we use state-of-the-art lattice QCD results to determine the corresponding LECs, whereas for the magnetic octupole moment (MOM) there is no unknown LEC up to the order considered here and we obtain a pure prediction. We compare our results with those reported in large $N_c$, lattice QCD, heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory and other models.
We present an analysis of the lowest-lying decuplet baryon masses in the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. In order to determine the $14$ low-energy constants, we perform a simultaneous fit of the $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD data from the PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD, and HSC Collaborations, taking finite-volume corrections into account self-consistently. We show that up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order one can achieve a good description of the lattice QCD and experimental data. Surprisingly, we note that t…
We extend a previous analysis of the lowest-lying octet baryon masses in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) by explicitly taking into account the contribution of the virtual decuplet baryons. Up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO), the effects of these heavier degrees of freedom are systematically studied. Their effects on the light-quark mass dependence of the octet baryon masses are shown to be relatively small and can be absorbed by the available low-energy constants up to N$^3$LO. Nevertheless, a better description of the finite-volume corrections of the latt…
We extend an earlier study of the baryon magnetic moments in chiral perturbation theory by the explicit inclusion of the spin-3/2 decuplet resonances. We find that the corrections induced by these heavier degrees of freedom are relatively small in a covariant framework where unphysical spin-1/2 modes are removed. Consequently, implementing the leading SU(3)-breaking corrections given by both the baryon and decuplet contributions, we obtain a description of the baryon-octet magnetic moments that is better than the Coleman-Glashow relations. Finally, we discuss the uncertainties and compare betw…
The baryon octet and decuplet masses and Bethe-Salpeter vertex and wave functions are calculated in the ladder approximation to the quark exchange between a scalar or axialvector diquark and a constituent quark. These functions reflecting full Lorentz covariance are given in terms of an expansion in Gegenbauer polynomials. In the rest frame of the baryon, a complete partial wave decomposition of the Bethe-Salpeter wave function is performed. The confinement of quarks and diquarks is implemented via a parametrisation of the corresponding propagators. We also discuss some aspects of the momentum…
We treat baryons as bound states of scalar or axialvector diquarks and a constituent quark which interact through quark exchange. We obtain fully four-dimensional wave functions for both octet and decuplet baryons as solutions of the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation. Applications currently under investigation are: electromagnetic and strong form factors and strangeness production processes.
We study the isospin symmetry breaking and mass splittings of the eight lowest-lying baryons. We consider three kinds of baryon mass terms, including the bare mass term, the electromagnetic terms and the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking terms. We include the mixing term between flavor-octet and flavor-decuplet baryons. This assumes that the lowest-lying Sigma and Xi baryons contain a few decuplet components and so are not purely flavor-octet. We achieve a good fitting that the difference between every fitted mass and its experimental value is less than 0.2 MeV.
We determine the baryon octet and decuplet masses as well as their wave functions in a covariant three-body Faddeev approach. We work in an approximation where irreducible three-body forces are neglected. In the two-body interactions we take into account a well explored rainbow-ladder kernel as well as flavor dependent meson-exchange terms motivated from the underlying quark-gluon interaction. Without flavor dependent forces we find agreement with the experimental spectrum on the 5-10 percent level. Including the flavor dependent terms on an exploratory level delivers a Sigma/Lambda splitting …
In the last years it became possible to measure in HADES the dilepton decays of several baryons. The baryon dilepton decays provide information about the electromagnetic structure of the baryons in the timelike region. In the present work, we study the $B^\prime \to e^+ e^- B$ decays, where $B^\prime$ is a baryon decuplet member and $B$ is a baryon octet member. Our calculations are based on the covariant spectator quark model, where the contribution of the quark core is complemented with an $SU(3)$ contribution from the pion cloud. The pion cloud contribution prove to be relevant in the range…
We study finite-volume effects on the masses of the ground-state octet baryons using covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) up to next-to-leading order by analyzing the latest $n_f=2+1$ lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics (LQCD) results from the NPLQCD collaboration. Contributions of virtual decuplet baryons are taken into account using the "consistent" coupling scheme. We compare our results with those obtained from heavy baryon ChPT and show that, although both approaches can describe well the lattice data, the underlying physics is different: In HBChPT, virtual decuplet baryons play …
We study the magnetic moments of the octet, decuplet, low-lying charm, and low-lying bottom baryons with nonzero light quarks in symmetric nuclear matter using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which satisfies the constraint for the allowed maximum change (swelling) of the in-medium nucleon size derived from the $y$-scaling data for $^3$He$(e,e')$ and $^{56}$Fe$(e,e')$. The present QMC model also satisfies the expected allowed maximum enhancement of the nucleon magnetic moments in nuclear matter. Moreover, it has been proven that the calculated in-medium to free proton electromagnetic form…
We suggest an effective quark model for low-lying baryon octet and decuplet motivated by QCD with a linearly rising confinement potential incorporating the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model with linear realization of chiral U(3)XU(3) symmetry. Baryons are considered as external heavy states coupled to local three-quark currents with fixed spinorial structure and to low-lying mesons through quark-meson interactions defined in the ENJL--model. In the constituent quark loop representation we have calculated the coupling constants of the (pi NN), (pi N Delta) and (gamma N Delta) interaction…
We study the octet to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions using the covariant spectator quark model, and predict the transition magnetic dipole form factors for those involving the strange baryons. Utilizing SU(3) symmetry, the valence quark contributions are supplemented by the pion cloud dressing based on the one estimated in the $γ^\ast N \to Δ$ reaction. Although the valence quark contributions are dominant in general, the pion cloud effects turn out to be very important to describe the experimental data. We also show that, other mesons besides the pion in particular the kaon, may …
We calculate the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon vector coupling $f_1(0)$ up to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with dynamical octet and decuplet contributions. We find that the decuplet contributions are of similar or even larger size than the octet ones. Combining both, we predict positive SU(3)-breaking corrections to all the four independent $f_1(0)$'s (assuming isospin symmetry), which are consistent, within uncertainties, with the latest results form large $N_c$ fits, chiral quark models, and quenched lattice QCD calculations.
We review recent progress in the understanding of low-energy baryon structure by means of chiral perturbation theory. In particular, we discuss the application of this formalism to the description of the quark mass dependence of recent Lattice QCD results on the masses. We present the chiral extrapolation of those of the PACS-CS and LHP collaborations and we predict the baryonic sigma-terms.
The magnetic dipole G_M(Q^2), electric quadrupole G_E(Q^2), and Coulomb quadrupole G_C(Q^2) form factors, describing the spin-3/2 to spin-1/2 electromagnetic transitions, are investigated within the light cone QCD sum rules. The Q^2 dependence of these form factors, as well as ratios of electric quadrupole and Coulomb quadrupole form factors to the magnetic dipole form factors are studied. We also compare our results on the magnetic dipole form factor with the prediction of the covariant spectator quark model.
We report an analysis of the octet baryon masses using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order with and without the virtual decuplet contributions. Particular attention is paid to the finite-volume corrections and the finite lattice spacing effects on the baryon masses. A reasonable description of all the publicly available $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD data is achieved.Utilyzing the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, we determine the nucleon sigma terms as $σ_{πN}=55(1)(4)$ MeV and $σ_{sN}=27(27)(4)$ MeV.
We report on a recent study of the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon vector coupling $f_1(0)$ up to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with dynamical octet and decuplet contributions. The decuplet contributions are taken into account for the first time in a covariant ChPT study and are found of similar or even larger size than the octet ones. We predict positive SU(3)-breaking corrections to all the four independent $f_1(0)$'s (assuming isospin symmetry), which are consistent, within uncertainties, with the latest results from large $N_c$ fits, chiral qua…
We present an analysis of the baryon-octet and -decuplet masses using covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. Besides the description of the physical masses we address the problem of the lattice QCD extrapolation. Using the PACS-CS collaboration data we show that a good description of the lattice points can be achieved at next-to-leading order with the covariant loop amplitudes and phenomenologically determined values for the meson-baryon couplings. Moreover, the extrapolation to the physical point up to this order is found to be better than the linear on…
The electric quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of the light decuplet baryons are calculated in the framework of the light cone QCD sum rules. The obtained non-vanishing values for the electric quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of these baryons show nonspherical charge distribution. The sign of electric quadrupole moment is positive for $Ω^-$, $Ξ^{*-}$, $Σ^{*-}$ and negative for $Σ^{*+}$, which correspond to the prolate and oblate charge distributions, respectively. A comparison of the obtained results with the predictions of non-covariant quark model which shows a good consistenc…
We report a calculation of the low-lying baryon magnetic moments using covariant chiral perturbation theory within the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme including intermediate octet and decuplet contributions. For the case of the baryon octet, we succeed to improve the Coleman-Glashow description by including the leading SU(3)$_F$-breaking effects coming from the lowest-order loops. We compare with previous attempts at the same order using heavy-baryon and covariant infrared chiral perturbation theory, and discuss the source of the differences. For the case of the decuplet-baryons …
Within the collective quantization scheme for chiral solitons we discuss states in higher dimensional representations of flavor SU(3) and their relation to radially excited states in the octet. We also consider states which do not have counterparts of the same quantum numbers in the octet or decuplet and cannot be built from three quarks. We focus on the Z^+ penta-quark, presumably the lightest such state, by estimating its mass and decay width.

The chiral constituent quark model (\chiCQM) with general parameterization (GP) method has been formulated to calculate the quadrupole moments of the spin 3/2^+ decuplet baryons and spin 3/2^+ \to 1/2^+ transitions. The implications of such a model have been investigated in detail for the effects of symmetry breaking and GP parameters pertaining to the two- and three-quark contributions. It is found that the \chiCQM is successful in giving a quantitative and qualitative description of the quadrupole moments.
A continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory, employing parametrisations of the necessary kernel elements, is used to compute the spectrum and Poincaré-covariant wave functions for all flavour-$SU(3)$ octet and decuplet baryons and their first positive-parity excitations. Such analyses predict the existence of nonpointlike, dynamical quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and a uniformly sound description of the systems studied is obtained by retaining flavour-antitriplet--scalar and flavour-sextet--pseudovector diquarks. Thus cons…
We study the scattering of a pseudoscalar meson off one ground state octet baryon in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT) up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The inherent power counting breaking terms are removed within extended-on-mass-shell scheme. We perform the first combined study of the pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering data in covariant BChPT and show that it can provide a reasonable description of the experimental data. In addition, we find that it is possible to fit the experimental baryon masses and the pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering data simultan…
The mass spectrum of the lowest lying octet baryons is calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit and treat the decuplet baryons as dynamical fields. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice simulations of the octet baryon masses.
We compute the Omega- electromagnetic form factors and the decuplet baryon magnetic moments using a quark model application of the Covariant Spectator Theory. Our predictions for the Omega- electromagnetic form factors can be tested in the future by lattice QCD simulations at the physical strange quark mass.
We report on a calculation of higher electromagnetic multipole moments of baryons in a non-covariant quark model approach. The employed method is based on the underlying spin-flavor symmetry of the strong interaction and its breaking. We present results on magnetic octupole moments of decuplet baryons and discuss their implications.
We perform a complete and systematic calculation of the octet-baryon form factors within the fully covariant approach of SU(3) chiral perturbation theory at O(p^3). We use the extended on-mass shell renormalization scheme, and include explicitly the vector mesons and the spin-3/2 decuplet intermediate states. Comparing these predictions with data including magnetic moments, charges, and magnetic radii, we determine the unknown low-energy constants, and give predictions for yet unmeasured observables, such as the magnetic moment of the Sigma^0, and the charge and magnetic radii of the hyperons.
We present the calculation of the hyperon forward spin polarizability gamma0 using manifestly Lorentz covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory including the intermediate contribution of the spin 3/2 states. As at the considered order the extraction of gamma0 is a pure prediction of chiral perturbation theory, the obtained values are a good test for this theory. After including explicitly the decuplet states, our SU(2) results have a very good agreement with the experimental data and we extend our framework to SU(3) to give predictions to the hyperons' gamma0 values. Prominent are the Sigma^…
We review some recent progress in our understanding of the lowest-lying spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 baryon magnetic moments (MMs) in terms of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). In particular, we show that at next-to-leading-order ChPT can describe the MMs of the octet baryons quite well. We also make predictions for the decuplet MMs at the same chiral order. Among them, the MMs of the $Δ^{++}$ and $Δ^+$ are found to agree well with data within the experimental uncertainties.
We study the effect of the meson cloud dressing in the octet baryon to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions. Combining the valence quark contributions from the covariant spectator quark model with those of the meson cloud estimated based on the flavor SU(3) cloudy bag model, we calculate the transition magnetic form factors at $Q^2=0$ ($Q^2=-q^2$ and $q$ the four-momentum transfer), and also the decuplet baryon electromagnetic decay widths. The result for the $γ^\ast Λ\to Σ^{\ast 0}$ decay width is in complete agreement with the data, while that for the $γ^\ast Σ^+ \to Σ^{\ast +}$ is un…
We present a calculation of the electric and magnetic form factors of ground-state octet and decuplet baryons including strange quarks. We work with a combination of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark propagator and covariant Bethe-Salpeter equations describing baryons as bound states of three (non-perturbative) quarks. Our form factors for the octet baryons are in good agreement with corresponding lattice data at finite $Q^2$; deviations in some isospin channels for the magnetic moments can be explained by missing meson cloud effects. At larger $Q^2$ our quark core calculation has predic…
We include the lowest-lying octet- and decuplet-baryons into partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. Perturbing about the chiral limit of the graded SU(6|3)_L x SU(6|3)_R flavor group of partially quenched QCD, we compute the leading one-loop contributions to the octet-baryon masses, magnetic moments and matrix elements of isovector twist-2 operators. We work in the isospin limit and keep two of the three sea quarks degenerate. The usefulness of the non-unique extension of the electric charge matrix and the isovector twist-2 operators from QCD to partially quenched QCD is discussed.
The development of chiral perturbation theory in hyperon phenomenology has been troubled due to power-counting subtleties and to a possible slow convergence. Furthermore, the presence of baryon-resonances, e.g. the lowest-lying decuplet, complicates the approach, and the inclusion of their effects may become necessary. Recently, we have shown that a fairly good convergence is possible using a renormalization prescription of the loop-divergencies which recovers the power counting, is covariant and consistent with analyticity. Moreover, we have systematically incorporated the decuplet resonances…
We present an overview of modern approaches to low-energy baryon structure based on baryon chiral perturbation theory. These are driven by the emergence of Lorentz covariant schemes and the systematic consideration of the effects of the lowest-lying decuplet resonances. In order to illustrate the progress recently achieved in this field, we present the last developments on our understanding of the nucleon sigma terms along these lines. In particular, we will show how these methods, in SU(2) or SU(3) settings, are reliable tools to process and maximize the information on the physical structure …
We review recent progress in the understanding of low-energy baryon structure by means of chiral perturbation theory. In particular, we discuss the application of this formalism to the description of various properties such as the baryon-octet magnetic moments, the electromagnetic structure of decuplet resonances and the hyperon vector coupling $f_1(0)$. Moreover, we present the results on the chiral extrapolation of recent lattice QCD results on the lowest-lying baryon masses and we predict the corresponding baryonic sigma-terms.
We report a calculation of the baryon magnetic moments using covariant chiral perturbation theory within the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme including intermediate octet and decuplet contributions. By fitting the two available low-energy constants, we improve the Coleman-Glashow description of the data when we include the leading SU(3) breaking effects coming from the lowest-order loops. We compare with previous attempts at the same order using heavy-baryon and covariant infrared chiral perturbation theory, and discuss the source of the differences.
We present the results of a third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude in a chiral effective field theory with pions, nucleons and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We work in a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory using dimensional regularization and the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. In the delta resonance sector, the on mass-shell renormalization is realized as a complex-mass scheme. By fitting the low-energy constants of the effective Lagrangian to the $S$- and $P$-partial waves a satisfactory des…
We report on a recent study of finite-volume effects on the lowest-lying octet baryon masses using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order by analysing the latest $n_f = 2 + 1$ lattice QCD results from the NPLQCD Collaboration.
We present results from a calculation of the electromagnetic transition form factors between ground-state octet and decuplet baryons as well as the octet-only $Σ^0$ to $Λ$ transition. We work in the combined framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations and covariant Bethe-Salpeter equations with all elements, the baryon three body wave function, the quark propagators and the dressed quark-photon vertex determined from a well-established, momentum dependent approximation for the quark-gluon interaction. We discuss in particular the similarities among the different transitions as well as the differenc…
