Recent measurements of the Zeeman effect in dark-cloud cores provide important tests for theories of cloud dynamics and prestellar core formation. In this Letter we report results of simulated Zeeman measurements, based on radiative transfer calculations through a snapshot of a simulation of supersonic and super-Alfvénic turbulence. We have previously shown that the same simulation yields a relative mass-to-flux ratio (core versus envelope) in agreement with the observations (and in contradiction with the ambipolar-drift model of core formation). Here we show that the mass-to-flux and turbulent-to-magnetic-energy ratios in the simulated cores agree with observed values as well. The mean magnetic field strength in the simulation is very low, \bar{B}=0.34 \muG, presumably lower than the mean field in molecular clouds. Nonetheless, high magnetic field values are found in dense cores, in agreement with the observations (the rms field, amplified by the turbulence, is B_{rms}=3.05 \muG). We conclude that a strong large-scale mean magnetic field is not required by Zeeman effect measurements to date, although it is not ruled out by this work.
Stars form inside molecular cloud filaments from the competition of gravitational forces with turbulence and magnetic fields. The exact orientation of these filaments with the magnetic fields depends on the strength of these fields, the gravitational potential, and the line-of-sight (LOS) relative to the mean field. To disentangle these effects we employ three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical numerical simulations that explore a wide range of initial turbulent and magnetic states, i.e., sub-Alfvénic to super-Alfvénic turbulence, with and without gravity. We use histogram of relative orientati…
We study the streaming instability of GeV$-100~$GeV cosmic rays (CRs) and its damping in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the damping of streaming instability is dominated by ion-neutral collisional damping in weakly ionized molecular clouds, turbulent damping in the highly ionized warm medium, and nonlinear Landau damping in the Galactic halo. Only in the Galactic halo, is the streaming speed of CRs close to the Alfvén speed. Alfvénic turbulence plays an important role in both suppressing the streaming instability and regulating the diffusion of streaming CRs via magnetic…
Energy equipartition is a powerful theoretical tool for understanding astrophysical plasmas. It is invoked, for example, to measure magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM), as evidence for small-scale turbulent dynamo action, and, in general, to estimate the energy budget of star-forming molecular clouds. In this study we motivate and explore the role of the volume-averaged root-mean-squared (rms) magnetic coupling term between the turbulent, $δ\mathbf{B}$ and large-scale, $\mathbf{B}_0$ fields, $\left< (δ\mathbf{B}\cdot\mathbf{B}_0)^{2} \right>^{1/2}_{\mathcal{V}}$. By considering th…
We adopt the deep learning method CASI-3D (Convolutional Approach to Structure Identification-3D) to infer the orientation of magnetic fields in sub-/trans- Alfvenic turbulent clouds from molecular line emission. We carry out magnetohydrodynamic simulations with different magnetic field strengths and use these to generate synthetic observations. We apply the 3D radiation transfer code RADMC-3d to model 12CO and 13CO (J = 1-0) line emission from the simulated clouds and then train a CASI-3D model on these line emission data cubes to predict magnetic field morphology at the pixel level. The trai…
The strong alignment of small-scale turbulent Alfvénic motions with the direction of the magnetic field that percolates the small-scale eddies and imprints the direction of the magnetic field is a property that follows from the MHD theory and the theory of turbulent reconnection. The Alfvénic eddies mix magnetic fields perpendicular to the direction of the local magnetic field, and this type of motion is used to trace magnetic fields with the velocity gradient technique (VGT). The other type of turbulent motion, fast modes, induces anisotropies orthogonal to Alfvénic eddies and interferes with…
Probing magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) is notoriously challenging. Motivated by the modern theories of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and turbulence anisotropy, we introduce the Structure-Function Analysis (SFA) as a new approach to measure the magnetic field orientation and estimate the magnetization. We analyze the statistics of turbulent velocities in three-dimensional compressible MHD simulations through the second-order structure functions in both local and global reference frames. In the sub-Alfvenic turbulence with the magnetic energy larger than the turbulent en…
Magnetic turbulence is anisotropic as the directions of motion are constrained by the magnetic field. Such anisotropy can be observed in velocity centroids obtained from spectroscopic observations. We use magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations to produce synthetic spectroscopic observations (position-position-velocity data) and study the anisotropy in the structure function of velocity centroid maps. We decomposed the velocity in the simulations into Alfvén, slow and fast-modes and studied how each of them contribute to the observed anisotropy. We found that when the angle between the line of …

Alfvénic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfvénic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We a…
Cosmic rays (CRs) are a dynamically important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies. The $\sim$GeV CRs that carry most CR energy and pressure are likely confined by self-generated turbulence, leading them to stream along magnetic field lines at the ion Alfvén speed. However, the consequences of self-confinement for CR propagation on galaxy scales remain highly uncertain. In this paper, we use a large ensemble of magnetohydrodynamical turbulence simulations to quantify how the basic parameters describing ISM turbulence -- the sonic Mach number, $\mathcal{M}$ (plasma compressibi…
We study the magnetic field to density ($B-ρ$) relation in turbulent molecular clouds with dynamically important magnetic fields using nonideal three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our simulations show that there is a distinguishable break density $ρ_{\rm T}$ between the relatively flat low density regime and a power-law regime at higher densities. We present an analytic theory for $ρ_{\rm T}$ based on the interplay of the magnetic field, turbulence, and gravity. The break density $ρ_{\rm T}$ scales with the strength of the initial Alfvén Mach number $\mathcal{M}_{\rm A0}$ for su…
