We discuss the physics of B0s mesons focusing on CP violation in B0s -> J/Psi Phi decays at the Tevatron. We summarize measurements of the properties of bottom baryons at the Tevatron including the Sigma_b states and the Xi_b baryon. We also discuss the discovery of the Omega_b baryon.
In this article, we study the two-body strong decays of the bottom mesons with the heavy meson effective theory in the leading order approximation, and obtain all the analytical expressions of the decay widths of the light pseudoscalar mesons transitions among the S-wave, P-wave and D-wave bottom mesons. As an application, we tentatively assign the bottom meson $B(5970)$ as the $2{\rm S}\,1^-$, $1{\rm D}\,1^-$ and $1{\rm D}\,3^-$ states, respectively, and calculate the decay widths of the $B_1(5721)$, $B_2(5747)$, $B_{s1}(5830)$, $B_{s2}(5840)$ and $B(5970)$, which can be confronted with the e…
After the discovery of the double-charm baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ by LHCb, one of the most important topics is to search for the bottom-charm baryons which contain a $b$ quark, a $c$ quark and a light quark. In this work, we study the two-body non-leptonic weak decays of a bottom-charm baryon into a spin-$1/2$ bottomed baryon and a light pseudoscalar meson with the short-distance contributions calculated under the factorization hypothesis and the long-distance contributions considering the final-state-interaction effects. The branching fractions of all fifty-seven decay channels are estimated. The …
In order to understand the possible $q\bar{q}$ quark-model assignments of the $B_J(5840)$ and $B_J(5960)$ recently reported by the LHCb Collaboration, we evaluate mass spectra, strong decays, and radiative decays of bottom and bottom-strange mesons in a nonrelativistic quark model. Comparing these predictions with the relevant experimental results, we suggest that the $B_J(5840)$ and $B_J(5960)$ can be identified as the $B(2^1S_0)$ and $B(1^3D_3)$, respectively, and the $B(5970)$ reported by the CDF Collaboration can be interpreted as the $B(2^3S_1)$ or $B(1^3D_3)$. Further precise measurement…
Stimulated by recent progress made by the LHCb Collaboration in discoveries of new bottom baryons, e.g., the $Ξ_{b}(6227)^{-}$ and the $Σ_{b}(6097)^{\pm}$, we re-examine the orbitally excited spectrum of the charmed and bottom baryons using Regge approach in the heavy quark-diquark picture. The results indicate that the spin-averaged mass spectrum of the orbitally-excited charmed and bottom baryons can be described by a linear Regge relation, which is derived from the rotating QCD string model. By giving further mass-splitting analysis of spin-dependent interactions, we explain the baryons $Ξ_…
We investigate $P$-wave bottom baryons of the $SU(3)$ flavor $\mathbf{6}_F$, and systematically study their $D$-wave decays into ground-state bottom baryons and pseudoscalar mesons. Together with [PRD91, 054034 (2015); PRD92, 114007 (2015); PRD95, 094008 (2017); EPJC80, 80 (2020)], a rather complete study is performed on both mass spectra and decay properties of $P$-wave bottom baryons, using the method of QCD sum rules and light-cone sum rules within the framework of heavy quark effective theory. Among all the possibilities, we find four $Σ_b$, four $Ξ^\prime_b$, and six $Ω_b$ baryons, with l…
Motivated by the recent observation of the orbital excitation $B(5970)$ by CDF collaboration, we have performed a systematical study of the mass spectrum and strong decay patterns of the higher $B$ and $B_s$ mesons. Hopefully the present investigation may provide valuable clues to further experimental exploration of these intriguing excited heavy mesons.
The strong decays of the $P$-wave $Σ_b$, $Ξ_b'$ and $Ω_b$ baryons are investigated with a constituent quark model in the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. The results show that the newly observed $Σ_b(6097)$ and $Ξ_b(6227)$ states by the LHCb collaboration can be assigned as the $λ$-mode $P$-wave singly bottom baryons. Given the heavy quark symmetry, both the $Σ_b(6097)$ and $Ξ_b(6227)$ states favor the light spin $j=2$ states with spin-parity numbers $J^P=3/2^-$ or $J^P=5/2^-$. More $P$-wave singly bottom baryons are most likely to be observed in future experiments for their relatively narrow width.
The nonleptonic decays $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΣ_{c}^{*-}π^{+},Ξ_{c}^{*0}K^{0}$ and $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΔ^{0}D^{0},Σ^{*-}D_{0}^{+}$ are studied. In addition, the decays $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΞ_{c}^{0}K^{0},Σ^{-}D_{s}^{+}$ are analyzed. For all these decays the dominant contribution comes from $W-$exchange, and for the decay $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΛ_{c}^{+}π^{-}$, in addition to factorization, baryon pole contribution to the $p$-wave (parity conserving) decay amplitude $B$ is discussed.
Triggered by experimental prospects to measure electromagnetic dipole moments of baryons containing a bottom quark, we calculate the CP-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) of spin-1/2 single-bottom baryons. We consider CP-violating dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that involve bottom quarks, and apply heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute the EDMs of several baryons. We discuss the expected size of the EDMs for beyond-the-Standard Model physics appearing at the TeV scale.
Large CP violation is an interesting phenomenon both theoretically and experimentally. Last year, LHCb Collaboration found in some three-body decays of bottom mesons that large CP violations appear in regions of the Dalitz plots that are not dominated by contributions from narrow resonances. In this paper, we present a mechanism which can induce such kind of large CP violations. In this mechanism, large localized CP asymmetries in phase space can be induced by the interference of two intermediate resonances with different spins. We also apply this mechanism to the decay channel $B^\pm\to K^\pm…
We argue that selected $S$ wave meson-baryon channels may play a key role to match poor baryon mass predictions from quark models with data. The identification of these channels with effective inelastic channels in data analysis allows to derive a prescription which could improve the extraction and identification of baryon resonances.
We present ground state spectra of mesons containing a charm and a bottom quark. For the charm quark we use overlap valence quarks while a non-relativistic formulation is utilized for the bottom quark on a background of 2+1+1 flavors HISQ gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. The hyperfine splitting between $1S$ states of $B_c$ mesons is found to be $56^{+4}_{-3}$ MeV. We also study the baryons containing only charm and bottom quarks and predict their ground state masses. Results are obtained at three lattice spacings.
The observation of CP violation in meson decays is a testament to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing paradigm, and an integral part of the Standard Model (SM). The SM also predicts the existence of CP violation in baryon decays that is yet to be observed. A critical test of the SM requires that CP violation be measured in baryon decays as well, in order to verify that it agrees with the measurement using meson decays. In this paper, we propose a modification to the recently proposed method to measure CP violating phase $γ$ in $b$-baryons, using interference arising implicitly due…
Recently CDF and D0 collaborations observed several bottom baryons. In this work we perform a systematic study of the masses of bottom baryons up to $1/m_Q$ in the framework of heavy quark effective field theory (HQET) using the QCD sum rule approach. The extracted chromo-magnetic splitting between the bottom baryon heavy doublet agrees well with the experimental data.
Selecting the newly observed $Ξ_b(6227)^-$ by LHCb as a study example, we decode its inner structure by giving the mass spectrum analysis and the investigation of its two-body strong decay behaviors. Our result indicates that the $Ξ_b(6227)^-$ is a good candidate of the $P$-wave $Ξ_b^{\prime}$ state with $J^P=3/2^-$ or $5/2^-$. In addition, we further provide the information of the properties of the partners of the $Ξ_b(6227)^-$. These predicted states include three $2S$ states and the remaining $1P$ states in the bottom-strange baryon family. The calculated sizable Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka$-$allowe…
We introduce a set of observables representing angular distribution asymmetries, which can be viewed as a generalization of the forward-backward asymmetry of angular distributions, and can be used as an effective tool to search for $C\!P$ violation in three-body decays of bottom and charmed baryons. We propose to search for such $C\!P$ asymmetries (1) in decays with $Λ^0$, $Σ^\pm$, or $Λ_c^+$ involved, such as $Λ_b\to Λ^0 D$ and $Λ_b\toΛ^0ρ(770)^0$; and (2) in three-body decays of bottom baryons with opposite parity intermediate resonances involved. Typical examples include $Ξ_b^-\to p K^- K^-…
Based on SU(3) flavor symmetry, we decompose the decay amplitudes of bottom baryon decays to a pseudoscalar meson and an octet (a decuplet) pentaquark in terms of three (two) invariant amplitudes $T_1$ and $T_{2,3}$ ($\tilde T_1$ and $\tilde T_2$) corresponding to external $W$-emission and internal $W$-emission diagrams, respectively. For antitriplet bottom baryons $Λ_b^0,Ξ_b^0$ and $Ξ_b^-$, their decays to a decuplet pentaquark proceed only through the internal $W$-emission diagram. Assuming the dominance from the external $W$-emission amplitudes, we present an estimate of the decay rates rel…
Properties of bottom and bottom-strange mesons are computed in two relativized quark models. Model masses and wavefunctions are used to predict radiative transition rates and the $^3P_0$ quark pair creation model is used to compute strong decay widths. A comparison to recently observed bottom and bottom-strange states is made. We find that there are numerous excited $B$ and $B_s$ mesons that have relatively narrow widths and significant branching ratios to simple final states such as $Bπ$, $B^*π$, $BK$, and $B^*K$ that could be observed in the near future.
In this work, we calculate the branching ratios of the color-allowed two-body nonleptonic decays of the bottom baryons, which include the $Ξ_b\to Ξ_c^{(*)}$ and $Ω_b\to Ω_c^{(*)}$ weak transitions by emitting a pseudoscalar meson ($π^{-}$, $K^{-}$, $D^{-}$, and $D_s^{-}$) or a vector meson ($ρ^{-}$, $K^{*-}$, $D^{*-}$, and $D_s^{*-}$). For achieving this aim, we adopt the three-body light-front quark model with the support of hadron spectroscopy, where the spatial wave functions of these heavy baryons involved in these weak decays are obtained by a semirelativistic potential model associated w…
This report discusses some recent investigations of the heavy hadron spectra using lattice QCD. The first half addresses multiple precision determinations of the masses of charm (and bottom) baryons. Recent lattice results in the tetraquark and the dibaryon sectors are also presented. The second half focuses on new exploratory studies of the excited charmonium spectra in the vector and scalar channels. Along the way, lattice results are compared with the experimental results, wherever they are available.
We present the latest results on the spectroscopy of orbitally excited strange bottom mesons from 1 fb^{-1} of CDF data. The measurements are performed with fully reconstructed B- decays collected by the CDF II detector at the sqrt(s)-energy of 1.96 TeV in both the di-muon and the fully hadronic trigger paths.
We present the latest results on the search of bottom baryon states Sigma_b using 1 fb^-1 of CDF data. The study is performed with the world's largest sample of fully reconstructed Lambda_b decays collected by CDF II detector at the collision energy of 1.96 TeV in the hadronic trigger path. We observe 4 new states consistent with Sigma_b(*)+/- bottom baryons.
We present measurements of the masses and widths of four bottom baryon resonances, Sigma_b(*)+-, reconstructed in the Lambda_b pi+- hadron decay modes. The isospin mass splittings for the Sigma_b and Sigma_b* multiplets are extracted as well. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^-1 .
We report measurements of direct CP-violating asymmetries in charmless decays of neutral bottom hadrons to pairs of charged hadrons with the upgraded Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using a data sample corresponding to 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, we obtain the first measurements of direct CP violation in bottom strange mesons, A_CP(BsKpi) = +0.39 +- 0.15 stat +- 0.08 syst, and bottom baryons, A_CP(Lb->ppi) = +0.03 +- 0.17 stat +- 0.05 syst and A_CP(Lb->pK) = +0.37 +- 0.17 +- 0.03 syst. In addition, we measure CP violation in Bd-->Kpi decays with 3.5sigma significance, A_CP(B->…
Employing the systematic framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) we perform an improved calculation of the leading-power contributions to the double radiative $B_{d, \, s}$-meson decay amplitudes in the heavy quark expansion. We then construct the QCD factorization formulae for the subleading power contributions arising from the energetic photon radiation off the constituent light-flavour quark of the bottom meson at tree level. Furthermore, we explore the factorization properties of the subleading power correction from the effective SCET current $J^{(A2)}$ at ${\cal O} (α_s^0)$. T…
In this work, we adopt the $^3P_0$ model to investigate the strong decays of the low-lying doubly bottom baryons in the $j-j$ coupling scheme systematically. In this scheme, we construct the formulism of $^3P_0$ model under the spectator assumption, and then the heavy diquark symmetry is preserved automatically. Our results show that some of the $λ$-mode $Ξ_{bb}(1P)$ and $Ω_{bb}(1P)$ states are narrow, which have good potentials to be observed by future experiments. For the low-lying $ρ$-mode and $ρ$-$λ$ hybrid states, the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-allowed strong decays are highly suppressed and they…
We have investigated the electromagnetic decays of the antitriplet and sextet charmed baryon systems with $J^P= \frac{1}{2}^+, \frac{3}{2}^+$ in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We first construct the chiral Lagrangians at $O(p^2)$ and $O(p^3)$. Then we calculate the electromagnetic (EM) decay amplitudes of the charmed baryon systems up to $O(p^3)$. With the help of the quark model, we estimate the low energy constants. The numerical results of the EM decay widths show good convergence of the chiral expansion. We notice that the two neutral EM decay processes $Ξ_c'…
We report a measurement of the ratios of the decay rates of the B^+, B^0 and B^0_s mesons into exclusive final states containing a J/psi meson. The final states were selected from 19.6 pb^{-1} of p-pbar collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. These data are interpreted to determine the bquark fragmentation fractions f_u, f_d and f_s. We also determine the branching fractions for the decay modes B^+ --> J/psi K^+, B^+ --> J/psi K^*(892)^+, B^0 --> J/psi K^0, B^0 --> J/psi K^*(892)^0 and B_s^0 --> J/psi phi(1020). We discuss the implications of these measurements to B meson dec…
We present preliminary results on the light, charmed and bottom baryon spectra using overlap valence quarks on the background of 2+1+1 flavours HISQ gauge configurations of the MILC collaboration. These calculations are performed on three different gauge ensembles at three lattice spacings (a ~ 0.12 fm, 0.09 fm and 0.06 fm) and for physical strange, charm and bottom quark masses. The SU(2) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is used to extrapolate baryon masses to the physical pion mass and the continuum limit extrapolations are also performed. Our results are consistent with the well meas…
Using data from proton - anti-proton collisions at the energy Ecm = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we present improved measurements of the masses and first measurements of natural widths of the four bottom baryon resonance states Sigma_b+, Sigma_b*+ and Sigma_b-, Sigma_b*-. These states are fully reconstructed in their decay modes to Lambda_b pi+-, where Lambda_b -->Lambda_c+ pi- with Lambda_c+ -->prot K- pi+. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.0/fb collected by an online event selection based on tracks disp…
The measurements of B_s mesons and b baryons advanced greatly in the past year. The ground state b baryon Xi_b^0 was observed for the first time; numerous decay modes of the B_s^0 and b baryons were newly seen; measurements of CP violation in B_s^0 decays were improved, generally improving the agreement with the standard model; and the search for rare decays sensitive to new physics were pushed to new levels. It was a very productive year for measurements of b baryons and B_s^0 mesons.
