We study a smooth crossover transition in the gas of quark-gluon bags. The equation of state at high temperature is that of the quark-gluon plasma. However, the system consists of the bags with finite volumes which are defined by the model parameters of the mass-volume bag spectrum. Possible structures in this {\it cluster} quark-gluon plasma are classified.
Lattice QCD simulations have shown unequivocally that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. Many model calculations predict the existence of a critical point at a value of the chemical potential where current lattice simulations are unreliable. We show how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the 3D Ising model. The resulting …
It is shown how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the 3D Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations $α+ 2β+ γ= 2$ and $β(δ- 1) = γ$ arise automatically, as does a new relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters which may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the Rela…
Thermodynamic functions, the (higher-order) fluctuations and correlations of conserved charges at $μ_B = 0$, and the Fourier coefficients of net-baryon density at imaginary $μ_B$, are considered in the framework of a Hagedorn bag-like model with a crossover transition. The qualitative behavior of these observables is found to be compatible with lattice QCD results. Fair quantitative description of the lattice data is obtained when quasiparticle-type quarks and gluons with non-zero masses are introduced into the bag spectrum. The equation of state of the model exhibits a smooth and wide crossov…
Heavy quark production provides a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma transport properties in heavy ion collisions. Experimental observables like the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ and elliptic anisotropy $v_{2}$ of heavy flavor mesons are sensitive to the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. There now exist an extensive set of such measurements, which allow a data-driven extraction of this coefficient. In this work, we make such an attempt within our recently developed heavy quark transport modeling framework (Langevin-transport with Gluon Radiation, LGR). A question of particular …
We present a phenomenological parametrization of the phase diagram of QCD as a function of temperature $T$ and baryochemical potential $μ$. The parametrization is constructed by introducing a switching function which controls the nature of the transition between the Hadron-Resonance Gas (HRG) and Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) phases of nuclear matter, such that the equation of state (EOS) possesses a rapid crossover at large $T$ and small $μ$, a critical point placed anywhere along the phase transition line, and a first-order transition at small $T$ and large $μ$. This EOS offers a convenient pheno…
Whether Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) exhibits a phase transition at finite temperature and density is an open question. It is important for hydrodynamic modeling of heavy ion collisions and neutron star mergers. Lattice QCD simulations have definitively shown that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. We combine the parametric scaling equation of state, usually associated with the 3D Ising model, with a background equation of state based on a smooth crossover from hadrons to quarks and gluons. Comparison to experime…
The phase transition from hadronic matter to chirally-symmetric quark-gluon plasma is expected to be a rapid crossover at zero quark chemical potential ($μ$), becoming first order at some finite value of $μ$, indicating the presence of a critical point. Using a three-flavor soft-wall model of AdS/QCD, we investigate the effect of varying the light and strange quark masses on the order of the chiral phase transition. At zero quark chemical potential, we reproduce the Columbia Plot, which summarizes the results of lattice QCD and other holographic models. We then extend this holographic model to…
A bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model is used to compute, for the first time, the behavior of several transport coefficients of the hot and baryon-rich strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma at the critical point and also across the first-order phase transition line in the phase diagram. The observables under study are of the shear and bulk viscosities, baryon diffusion, thermal conductivity, the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$, as well as the heavy-quark drag force and Langevin diffusion coefficients. These calculations provide a phenomenologically promising estimate for these…
Recently, it has been found that the kinematic viscosity of liquids at the minimum, $ν_m$, can be expressed in terms of fundamental physical constants, giving $ν_m$ on the order of $10^{-7}~{\rm m^2/s}$. Here, we show that the kinematic viscosity of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has a similar value and support this finding by experimental data and theoretical estimations. The similarity is striking, given that the dynamic viscosity and the density of QGP are about 16 orders of magnitude larger than in liquids and that the two systems have disparate interactions and fundamental theories. We discuss …
A discussion on the electrical conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma as determined by lattice QCD is given. After a reminder of basic definitions and expectations, various methods for spectral reconstruction are reviewed, including the use of Ansätze and sum rules, the Maximum Entropy and Backus-Gilbert methods, and Tikhonov regularisation. A comprehensive overview of lattice QCD results obtained so far is given, including a comparison of the different lattice formulations. A noticeable consistency for the conductivities obtained is seen, in spite of the differences in the lattice setups and …

We extend the effective dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) - constructed for the description of non-perturbative QCD phenomena of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (QGP) - to large baryon chemical potentials, $μ_B$, including a critical end-point and a 1st order phase transition. The DQPM description of quarks and gluons is based on partonic propagators with complex selfenergies where the real part of the selfenergies is related to the quasiparticle mass and the imaginary part to a finite width of their spectral functions. In DQPM the determination of complex selfenergies for the p…
By making use of an explicit representation for the imaginary part of the photon polarization tensor in terms of transitions between the Landau levels of light quarks, we study the angular dependence of direct photon emission from a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma. Because of the magnetic field, the leading order photon rate comes from the three processes of the zeroth order in the coupling constant $α_s$: (i) the quark splitting ($q\rightarrow q+γ$), (ii) the antiquark splitting ($\bar{q} \rightarrow \bar{q}+γ$), and (iii) the quark-antiquark annihilation ($q + \bar{q}\rightarrow γ$). …
QCD critical point is a landmark region in the QCD phase diagram outlined by temperature as a function of baryon chemical potential. To the right of this second-order phase transition point, one expects first order quark-hadron phase transition boundary, towards the left a crossover region, top of it lies the quark gluon plasma phase and below it the hadronic phase. Hence locating the QCD critical point through relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments is an active area of research. Cumulants of conserved quantities in strong interaction, such as net-baryon, net-charge, and net-strangeness,…
