This paper describes the development and analysis of finite-volume methods for the Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes (LLNS) equations and related stochastic partial differential equations in fluid dynamics. The LLNS equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by the addition of white-noise fluxes whose magnitudes are set by a fluctuation-dissipation relation. Originally derived for equilibrium fluctuations, the LLNS equations have also been shown to be accurate for non-equilibrium systems. Previous studies of numerical methods for the LLNS equations focused primarily on measuring variances and correlations computed at equilibrium and for selected non-equilibrium flows. In this paper, we introduce a more systematic approach based on studying discrete equilibrium structure factors for a broad class of explicit linear finite-volume schemes. This new approach provides a better characterization of the accuracy of a spatio-temporal discretization as a function of wavenumber and frequency, allowing us to distinguish between behavior at long wavelengths, where accuracy is a prime concern, and short wavelengths, where stability concerns are of greater importance. We use this analysis to develop a specialized third-order Runge Kutta scheme that minimizes the temporal integration error in the discrete structure factor at long wavelengths for the one-dimensional linearized LLNS equations. Together with a novel method for discretizing the stochastic stress tensor in dimension larger than one, our improved temporal integrator yields a scheme for the three-dimensional equations that satisfies a discrete fluctuation-dissipation balance for small time steps and is also sufficiently accurate even for time steps close to the stability limit.

We use fluctuating hydrodynamics to evaluate the enhancement of thermally excited fluctuations in laminar fluid flow using plane Couette flow as a representative example. In a previous publication [J. Stat. Phys. vol. 144 (2011) p. 774] we derived the energy amplification arising from thermally excited wall-normal fluctuations by solving a fluctuating Orr-Sommerfeld equation. In the present paper we derive the energy amplification arising from wall-normal vorticity fluctuation by solving a fluctuating Squire equation. The thermally excited wall-normal vorticity fluctuations turn out to yield t…
We perform equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for nanoscale fluids confined between two parallel walls and investigate how the autocorrelation function of force acting on one wall is related to the slip length. We demonstrate that for atomically smooth surfaces, the autocorrelation function is accurately described by linearized fluctuating hydrodynamics (LFH). Excellent agreement between the simulation and the LFH solution is found over a wide range of scales, specifically, from the time scale of fluid relaxation even to that of molecular motion. Fitting the simulation data yields a re…
We use the Crooks fluctuation theorem together with Zubarev hydrodynamics to develop a bottom-up theory of hydrodynamic fluctuations. We also use thermodynamic uncertainity relations to estimate bottom-up limits to dissipative transport coefficients.
Fluctuating hydrodynamics provides a model for fluids at mesoscopic scales where thermal fluctuations can have a significant impact on the behavior of the system. Here we investigate a model for fluctuating hydrodynamics of a single component, multiphase flow in the neighborhood of the critical point. The system is modeled using a compressible flow formulation with a van der Waals equation of state, incorporating a Korteweg stress term to treat interfacial tension. We present a numerical algorithm for modeling this system based on an extension of algorithms developed for fluctuating hydrodynam…
A good representation of mesoscopic fluids is required to combine with molecular simulations at larger length and time scales (De Fabritiis {\it et. al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 134501 (2006)). However, accurate computational models of the hydrodynamics of nanoscale molecular assemblies are lacking, at least in part because of the stochastic character of the underlying fluctuating hydrodynamic equations. Here we derive a finite volume discretization of the compressible isothermal fluctuating hydrodynamic equations over a regular grid in the Eulerian reference system. We apply it to fluids such as…
The correlations of the fluctuating stress tensor are calculated in an equilibrium molecular-dynamics simulation of a Lennard--Jones liquid. We define a coarse-grained local stress tensor which can be calculated numerically and which allows for the first time to determine the stress correlation function both in time and in space. Our findings corroborate the assumptions made in fluctuating hydrodynamics as long as the liquid is isotropic, that is in bulk. In the vicinity of a rigid plate, however, the isotropy is restricted, and major modifications must be done with respect to the usual theory…
Computational fluctuating hydrodynamics aims at understanding the impact of thermal fluctuations on fluid motions at small scales through numerical exploration. These fluctuations are modeled as stochastic flux terms and incorporated into the classical Navier-Stokes equations, which need to be solved numerically. In this paper, we present a novel projection-based method for solving the incompressible fluctuating hydrodynamics (FHD) equations. By analyzing the equilibrium structure factor spectrum of the velocity field for the linearized FHD equations, we investigate how the inherent splitting …
We argue that different formulations of hydrodynamics are related to uncertainties in the definitions of local thermodynamic and hydrodynamic variables. We show that this ambiguity can be resolved by viewing different formulations of hydrodynamics as particular "gauge choices" which lead to the same physical behavior of the system. Using the example of bulk viscosity, we show that Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun (BDNK) and Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics are particular "gauge choices" of this type, related by a well-defined transformation of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic variables. We argue that…
Fluctuating hydrodynamics (FHD) provides a framework for modeling microscopic fluctuations in a manner consistent with statistical mechanics and nonequilibrium thermodynamics. This paper presents an FHD formulation for isothermal reactive incompressible liquid mixtures with stochastic chemistry. Fluctuating multispecies mass diffusion is formulated using a Maxwell-Stefan description without assuming a dilute solution, and momentum dynamics is described by a stochastic Navier-Stokes equation for the fluid velocity. We consider a thermodynamically consistent generalization for the law of mass ac…
In this paper we discuss the formulation of the fuctuating Navier-Stokes (FNS) equations for multi-species, non-reactive fluids. In particular, we establish a form suitable for numerical solution of the resulting stochastic partial differential equations. An accurate and efficient numerical scheme, based on our previous methods for single species and binary mixtures, is presented and tested at equilibrium as well as for a variety of non-equilibrium problems. These include the study of giant nonequilibrium concentration fluctuations in a ternary mixture in the presence of a diffusion barrier, t…
We present a new mesoscale model for ionic liquids based on a low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamics formulation for multicomponent charged species. The low Mach number approach eliminates sound waves from the fully compressible equations leading to a computationally efficient incompressible formulation. The model uses a Gibbs free energy functional that includes enthalpy of mixing, interfacial energy, and electrostatic contributions. These lead to a new fourth-order term in the mass equations and a reversible stress in the momentum equations. We calibrate our model using parameters for [DM…
We formulate and study computationally the low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamic equations for electrolyte solutions. We are interested in studying transport in mixtures of charged species at the mesoscale, down to scales below the Debye length, where thermal fluctuations have a significant impact on the dynamics. Continuing our previous work on fluctuating hydrodynamics of multicomponent mixtures of incompressible isothermal miscible liquids (A. Donev, et al., Physics of Fluids, 27, 3, 2015), we now include the effect of charged species using a quasielectrostatic approximation. Localized c…
Electrolyte solutions play an important role in energy storage devices, whose performance highly relies on the electrokinetic processes at sub-micron scales.\ Although fluctuations and stochastic features become more critical at small scales, the long-range Coulomb interactions pose a particular challenge for both theoretical analysis and simulation of fluid systems with fluctuating hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions. Here, we present a theoretical framework based on the Landau-Lifshitz theory to derive closed-form expressions of fluctuation correlations in electrolyte solutions, indi…
Understanding what happens inside the rippling and dancing surface of a liquid remains one of the great challenges of fluid dynamics. Using molecular dynamics (MD) we can pick apart the interface structure and understand surface tension. In this work we derive an exact mechanical formulation of hydrodynamics for a liquid-vapour interface using a control volume which moves with the surface. This mathematical framework provides the local definition of hydrodynamic fluxes at any point on the surface. These are represented not only by the flux of molecules and intermolecular interactions acting ac…
We formulate and study computationally the fluctuating compressible Navier-Stokes equations for reactive multi-species fluid mixtures. We contrast two different expressions for the covariance of the stochastic chemical production rate in the Langevin formulation of stochastic chemistry, and compare both of them to predictions of the chemical Master Equation for homogeneous well-mixed systems close to and far from thermodynamic equilibrium. We develop a numerical scheme for inhomogeneous reactive flows, based on our previous methods for non-reactive mixtures [K. Balakrishnan, A. L. Garcia, A. D…
We present a numerical formulation for the solution of non-isothermal, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations with thermal fluctuations to describe mesoscale transport phenomena in multispecies fluid mixtures. The novelty of our numerical method is the use of staggered grid momenta along with a finite volume discretization of the thermodynamic variables to solve the resulting stochastic partial differential equations. The key advantages of the numerical scheme are significantly simplified and compact discretization of the diffusive and stochastic momentum fluxes, and an unambiguous prescription…

A meshfree Lagrangian method for the fluctuating hydrodynamic equations (FHEs) with fluid-structure interactions is presented. Brownian motion of the particle is investigated by direct numerical simulation of the fluctuating hydrodynamic equations. In this framework a bidirectional coupling has been introduced between the fluctuating fluid and the solid object. The force governing the motion of the solid object is solely due to the surrounding fluid particles. Since a meshfree formulation is used, the method can be extended to many real applications involving complex fluid flows. A three-dimen…
We develop a low Mach number formulation of the hydrodynamic equations describing transport of mass and momentum in a multispecies mixture of incompressible miscible liquids at specified temperature and pressure that generalizes our prior work on ideal mixtures of ideal gases and binary liquid mixtures. In this formulation we combine and extend a number of existing descriptions of multispecies transport available in the literature. The formulation applies to non-ideal mixtures of arbitrary number of species, without the need to single out a 'solvent' species, and includes contributions to the …
We develop numerical methods for reaction-diffusion systems based on the equations of fluctuating hydrodynamics (FHD). While the FHD formulation is formally described by stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), it becomes similar to the reaction-diffusion master equation (RDME) description when those SPDEs are spatially discretized and reactions are modeled as a source term having Poisson fluctuations. However, unlike the RDME, the FHD description naturally extends from the regime where fluctuations are strong, i.e., each hydrodynamic cell has few (reactive) molecules, to regimes wit…
We introduce a finite-volume numerical scheme for solving stochastic gradient-flow equations. Such equations are of crucial importance within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics and dynamic density functional theory. Our proposed scheme deals with general free-energy functionals, including, for instance, external fields or interaction potentials. This allows us to simulate a range of physical phenomena where thermal fluctuations play a crucial role, such as nucleation and other energy-barrier crossing transitions. A positivity-preserving algorithm for the density is derived based on a h…

We study correlations of hydrodynamic fluctuations in shear flow analytically and also by dissipative particle dynamics~(DPD) simulations. The hydrodynamic equations are linearized around the macroscopic velocity field and then solved by a perturbation method in Fourier-transformed space. The autocorrelation functions~(ACFs) from the analytical method are compared with results obtained from DPD simulations under the same shear-flow conditions. Upto a moderate shear rate, various ACFs from the two approaches agree with each other well. At large shear rates, discrepancies between the two methods…
We analyze the Lattice Boltzmann method for the simulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics by Adhikari et al. [Europhys. Lett. 71, 473 (2005)] and find that it shows excellent agreement with theory even for small wavelengths as long as a stationary system is considered. This is in contrast to other finite difference and older lattice Boltzmann implementations that show convergence only in the limit of large wavelengths. In particular cross correlators vanish to less than 0.5%. For larger mean velocities, however, Galilean invariance violations manifest themselves through errors of a magnitude sim…

Starting from the Boltzmann-Enskog kinetic equations, the charge transport equation for bidisperse granular flows with contact electrification is derived with separate mean velocities, total kinetic energies, charges and charge variances for each solid phase. To close locally-averaged transport equations, a Maxwellian distribution is presumed for both particle velocity and charge. The hydrodynamic equations for bidisperse solid mixtures are first revisited and the resulting model consisting of the transport equations of mass, momentum, total kinetic energy, which is the sum of the granular tem…

Superstatistics is a `statistics of a statistics' relevant for driven nonequilibrium systems with fluctuating intensive parameters. It contains Tsallis statistics as a special case. We show that the probability density functions of velocity differences and accelerations measured in Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence experiments are well reproduced by simple superstatistics models. We compare fits obtained for log-normal superstatistics and chi-squared superstatistics (= Tsallis statistics).
Second Stokes problem about behaviour of rarefied gas filling half-space is analytically solved. A plane limiting half-space makes harmonious fluctuations in the plane. The kinetic equation with modelling integral collisions in form of ellipsoidal statistical model is used . The case of diffusion reflexions of gas molecules from a wall is considered. Function distribution of gas molecules is constructed and mass velocity of gas also in half-space is found. Hydrodynamic character of the solution at small frequencies of fluctuation plane limiting gas is revealed. The force of a friction operatin…
