We calculate the speed of sound $c_s$ in an ideal gas of resonances whose mass spectrum is assumed to have the Hagedorn form $ρ(m) \sim m^{-a}\exp{bm}$, which leads to singular behavior at the critical temperature $T_c = 1/b$. With $a = 4$ the pressure and the energy density remain finite at $T_c$, while the specific heat diverges there. As a function of the temperature the corresponding speed of sound initially increases similarly to that of an ideal pion gas until near $T_c$ where the resonance effects dominate causing $c_s$ to vanish as $(T_c - T)^{1/4}$. In order to compare this result to the physical resonance gas models, we introduce an upper cut-off M in the resonance mass integration. Although the truncated form still decreases somewhat in the region around $T_c$, the actual critical behavior in these models is no longer present.
In this paper we calculate the speed of sound for three phases that may exist inside a magnetized hybrid neutron star at different density regions: A hadronic phase at low densities, quark-matter in the magnetic dual chiral density wave (MDCDW) phase at intermediate densities and a free-quark phase modeled by the MIT bag model at higher densities. It is found that the speed of sound exhibits a non-monotonic behavior, that goes from values smaller than the conformal limit ($c_s^2 < 1/3$) in the hadronic phase, to peak ($c_s^2 > 1/3$) in the MDCDW phase, to finally reach the conformal limit ($c_…
Recent high energy CERN LHC experiments on transverse momenta distributions of produced particles seem to show the existence of some (small but persistent) log-periodic oscillation in the ratios $R = σ_{data}\left( p_T\right)/σ_{fit}\left( p_T\right)$. We argue that they can provide us with so far unnoticed information on the production process, which can be interpreted as the presence of some kind of sound waves formed during the collision process in the bulk of the produced high density matter.
We argue that recent high energy CERN LHC experiments on transverse momenta distributions of produced particles provide us new, so far unnoticed and not fully appreciated, information on the underlying production processes. To this end we concentrate on the small (but persistent) log-periodic oscillations decorating the observed $p_T$ spectra and visible in the measured ratios $R = σ_{data}\left( p_T\right)/σ_{fit}\left( p_T\right)$. Because such spectra are described by quasi-power-like formulas characterised by two parameters: the power index $n$ and scale parameter $T$ (usually identified w…
We systematically investigate the speed of sound in QCD matter under different conditions in the grand canonical ensemble within the Polyakov loop improved Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. The numerical results indicate that the dependence of speed of sound on parameters like temperature and chemical potential can be indicative of QCD phase transition. Some new features of speed of sound are discovered, for instance, the hierarchy of sound velocity for $u(d)$ and $s$ quark at low temperature with the increasing chemical potential and the squared sound velocity approaching to almost zero in th…
A non-perturbative method of Field Correlators (FCM) is applied to study speed of sound in quark-gluon plasma at temperatures above the deconfinement transition 1<T/T_c<3 (Tc=160 MeV) under a uniform magnetic field up to eB ~ 1 GeV^2. The speed of sound in N_f=2+1 QCD quark-gluon plasma is found to exceed the conformal limit (1/3) at very large magnetic field strengths eB>0.5 GeV^2. At large temperatures, the speed of sound tends to the conformal limit; low-temperature behavior demonstrates inverse magnetic catalysis. The effect of magnetic field on the speed of sound in quark-gluon plasma is …
The speed of sound ($c_s$) is studied to understand the hydrodynamical evolution of the matter created in heavy-ion collisions. The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed in heavy-ion collisions evolves from an initial QGP to the hadronic phase via a possible mixed phase. Due to the system expansion in a first order phase transition scenario, the speed of sound reduces to zero as the specific heat diverges. We study the speed of sound for systems, which deviate from a thermalized Boltzmann distribution using non-extensive Tsallis statistics. In the present work, we calculate the speed of sound as a f…
The speed of sound in QCD matter at finite temperature and density is investigated within the Polyakov loop improved Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. The spinodal structure associated with the chiral first-order chiral phase transition is considered to describe the continuous variation of the speed of sound. The behaviors of the squared sound speed in different phases, including the stable, metastable and unstable phases, are derived. The relation between speed of sound and QCD phase transitions is systematically explored. In particular, the boundary of vanishing sound velocity is derived in …
The properties of the quark-gluon plasma(QGP) in the presence of baryon chemical potential are studied using the Field Correlator Method(FCM). At low densities the QGP thermodynamics with the colormagnetic confinement and the Polyakov line interaction is in good agreement with lattice data, and the speed of sound satisfies $C_s^2\leq \frac13$,but in the intermediate range of densities the speed of sound displays a singular behaviour and one needs density modifications of the Polyakov line interaction to avoid instabilities. In particular for $μ_q >0.5$ GeV there exists a region in the $(μ, T)$ …
The speed of sound $C_{s}$ in the SU(3) and (2+1)QCD is calculated within the Field Correlator Method using the nonperturbative colour magnetic confinement and Polyakov loop interaction in the deconfined region. The resulting $C_{s}$ displays a discontinuity at $T=T_{c}$ in the SU(3) case. It is shown numerically and analytically that $ C^{2}_{s}$ never exceeds $\frac{1}{3}$ both for SU(3) and (2+1) QCD for vanishing chemical potential.A good agreement is found of our numerical results with the corresponding lattice data.
I describe a novel mechanism where the variation of an $ω_0$ condensate can generate a "spike" in the speed of sound in hadronic matter. An $ω_0$ condensate naturally increases the speed of sound; the real problem is how to get the speed of sound to decrease. I suggest this can happen through the appearance of a Quantum Pion Liquid.
We investigate the speed of sound in nuclear matter at finite temperature and density~(chemical potential) in the nonlinear Walecka model. The numerical results suggest that the behaviors of sound speed are closely related to the the nuclear liquid-gas (LG) phase transition and the associated spinodal structure. The adiabatic sound speed is nonzero at the critical endpoint (CEP) in the mean field approximation. We further derive the boundary of vanishing sound velocity in the temperature-density phase diagram, and point out the region where the sound wave equation is broken. The distinction be…
The energy budget for gravitational waves of a cosmological first order phase transitions depends on the speed of sound in the thermal plasma in both phases around the bubble wall. Working in the real-singlet augmented Standard Model, which admits a strong two-step electroweak phase transition, we compute higher order corrections to the pressure and sound speed. We compare our result to lower-order approximations to the sound speed and the energy budget and investigate the impact on the gravitational wave signal. We find that deviations in the speed of sound from $c_s^2 = 1/3$ are enhanced up …
We investigate the speed of sound in $(d+1)$-dimensional field theory by studying its dual $(d+2)$-dimensional gravity theory from gauge/gravity correspondence. Instead of the well known conformal limit $c_s^2 \rightarrow 1/d$ at high temperature, we reveal two more universal quantities in various limits: $c_s^2 \rightarrow (d-1)/16π$ at low temperature and $c_s^2 \rightarrow (d-1)/16πd$ at large chemical potential.
In this work we investigate the minimal physical requirements needed for generating a speed of sound that surpasses its asymptotic conformal limit. It is shown that a peak in the speed of sound of homogeneous matter naturally emerges in the transition from a phase with broken chiral symmetry to one with a gapped Fermi surface. We argue that this could be relevant for understanding the peak in the speed of sound displayed by some of the current models for cold ultradense matter. A minimal model implementation of this mechanism is presented, based on the spontaneous breakdown of an approximate p…
Speed of sound and trace anomaly in a unified treatment of the two-color diquark superfluid, the pion-condensed high-isospin matter, and the 2SC quark matter
In this work we compute the entropy density, speed of sound, and the resulting impact on the bulk viscosity to shear viscosity ratio of an ideal Quark Gluon Plasma when the effects of a generalized uncertainty principle are taken into consideration. When the parameter of the generalized uncertainty principle tends to zero, i.e., $α\rightarrow 0$, we obtain the value of the speed of sound for the ideal gas of massless particles, i.e., $c^{2}_{s}\rightarrow 1/3$, and we recover the expected result that the bulk viscosity $ζ\rightarrow 0$ when $α\rightarrow 0$. In addition, in the high temperatur…
The effects of the presence of hyperons and a phase transition to deconfined quark matter on the speed of sound in neutron stars is investigated. For this purpose a composite description consisting of a model of the covariant field theory of hadrons and one for unbound quarks are used. A phase transition with continuous and monotonous variation of the equation of state is assumed. The predictions are contrasted with recent observational data on isolated neutron stars as well as on binary systems. Only one candidate is finally obtained from six different descriptions. According to the present c…
We present the argument that "pseudo-conformal" symmetry permeates from low density near nuclear matter to high density in the core of massive neutron stars. As a support of this argument, we describe how the quenched $g_A\approx 1$ in nuclei and the sound speed $v_s^2/c^2\approx 1/3$ in compact stars are controlled by emerging scale invariance in nuclear interactions. In our description, quasi-baryons could "masquerade" de-confined quarks in the interior of compact stars.
The bulk viscosity coefficient of hadronic matter has been estimated in this present work, where the thermodynamical equilibrium quantity like speed of sound in the medium has been obtained by using standard hadron resonance gas model. Whereas, the non-equilibrium quantity like thermal widths of medium constituents have been calculated in the framework field theory at finite temperature. Our values of bulk viscosity coefficient are in agreement with some earlier estimations.
We study sound speed resonance (SSR) mechanism for primordial black hole (PBH) formation in an early universe scenario with inflaton and curvaton being mixed. In this scenario, the total primordial density perturbations can be contributed by the fluctuations from both the inflaton and curvaton fields, in which the inflaton fluctuations lead to the standard adiabatic perturbations, while the sound speed of the curvaton fluctuations are assumed to be oscillating during inflation. Due to the narrow resonance effect of SSR mechanism, we acquire the enhanced primordial density perturbations on smal…
We explore a plausible mechanism that the hemispherical power asymmetry in the CMB is produced by the spatial variation of the primordial sound speed parameter. We suggest that in a generalized approach of the $δN$ formalism the local e-folding number may depend on some other primordial parameters besides the initial values of inflaton. Here the $δN$ formalism is extended by considering the effects of a spatially varying sound speed parameter caused by a super-Hubble perturbation of a light field. Using this generalized $δN$ formalism, we systematically calculate the asymmetric primordial spec…
We report on a novel phenomenon of the resonance effect of primordial density perturbations arisen from a sound speed parameter with an oscillatory behavior, which can generically lead to the formation of primordial black holes in the early Universe. For a general inflaton field, it can seed primordial density fluctuations and their propagation is governed by a parameter of sound speed square. Once if this parameter achieves an oscillatory feature for a while during inflation, a significant non-perturbative resonance effect on the inflaton field fluctuations takes place around a critical lengt…
We present a concrete realization of the sound speed resonance (SSR) mechanism for primordial black hole (PBH) formation within a specific model of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation. We perform a perturbative approach to phenomenologically construct such a viable DBI inflation model that involves the nonoscillating stage and the oscillating stage, with a type of specific forms of the warp factor and the potential. We show that the continuous but nonsmooth conjunction of sound speed between two stages does not yield manifest effects on the phenomenology of SSR, and thus, our model gives rise to…
