For a given nonnegative integer alpha, a matrix A_{n} of size n is called alpha-Toeplitz if its entries obey the rule A_{n}=[a_{r-alpha*s}]_{r,s=0}^{n-1}. Analogously, a matrix A_{n} again of size n is called alpha-circulant if A_{n}= [a_{(r-alpha*s)mod n}]_{r,s=0}^{n-1}. Such kind of matrices arises in wavelet analysis, subdivision algorithms and more generally when dealing with multigrid/multilevel methods for structured matrices and approximations of boundary value problems. In this paper we study the singular values of alpha-circulants and we provide an asymptotic analysis of the distribution results for the singular values of alpha-Toeplitz sequences in the case where {a_{k}} can be interpreted as the sequence of Fourier coeffcients of an integrable function f over the domain (-pi;pi). Some generalizations to the block, multilevel case, amounting to choose f multivariate and matrix valued, are briefly considered.
We begin by showing that any $n \times n$ matrix can be decomposed into a sum of $n$ circulant matrices with periodic relaxations on the unit circle. This decomposition is orthogonal with respect to a Frobenius inner product, allowing recursive iterations for these circulant components. It is also shown that the dominance of a few circulant components in the matrix allows sparse similarity transformations using Fast-Fourier-transform (FFT) operations. This enables the evaluation of all eigenvalues of dense Toeplitz, block-Toeplitz, and other periodic or quasi-periodic matrices, to a reasonable…
The nearest circulant approximation of a real Toeplitz matrix in the Frobenius norm is derived. This matrix is symmetric. It is proven that symmetric circulant matrices are the only real circulant matrices with all real eigenvalues. The Frobenius norm of the difference between this approximation and the Toeplitz matrix for the case of a Toeplitz matrix displaying exponential decay is evaluated using an expression of $\sum_{n = 1}^N n^k p^n$ in terms of the first $k$ geometric moments. Compared to a classic approximation the nearest circulant displays dramatically better behaviour in any finite…

In the literature, there exist several studies on symbol-based multigrid methods for the solution of linear systems having structured coefficient matrices. In particular, the convergence analysis for such methods has been obtained in an elegant form in the case of Toeplitz matrices generated by a scalar-valued function. In the block-Toeplitz setting, that is, in the case where the matrix entries are small generic matrices instead of scalars, some algorithms have already been proposed regarding specific applications and a first rigorous convergence analysis has been performed in [7]. However, w…
We present a circulant and skew-circulant splitting (CSCS) iterative method for solving large sparse continuous Sylvester equations $AX + XB = C$, where the coefficient matrices $A$ and $B$ are Toeplitz matrices. A theoretical study shows that if the circulant and skew-circulant splitting factors of $A$ and $B$ are positive semi-definite and at least one is positive definite (not necessarily Hermitian), then the CSCS method converges to the unique solution of the Sylvester equation. In addition, we obtain an upper bound for the convergence factor of the CSCS iteration. This convergence factor …
In order to precondition Toeplitz systems, we present a new class of simultaneously diagonalizable real matrices, the Gamma-matrices, which include both symmetric circulant matrices and a subclass of the set of all reverse circulant matrices. We define some algorithms for fast computation of the product between a Gamma-matrix and a real vector and between two Gamma-matrices. Moreover, we illustrate a technique of approximating a real symmetric Toeplitz matrix by a Gamma-matrix, and we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are clustered around zero with the exception of at most…
In this paper, we study the condition number of a random Toeplitz matrix. Since a Toeplitz matrix is a diagonal constant matrix, its rows or columns cannot be stochastically independent. This situation does not permit us to use the classic strategy to analyze its minimum singular value when all the entries of a random matrix are stochastically independent. Using a circulant embedding, we can break the stochastic dependence of the structure of the Toeplitz matrix and reduce the problem to analyze the extreme singular values of a random circulant matrix. Among our results, we show the condition …
In this work, we perform a spectral analysis of flipped multilevel Toeplitz sequences, i.e., we study the asymptotic spectral behaviour of $\{Y_{\boldsymbol{n}}T_{\boldsymbol{n}}(f)\}_{\boldsymbol{n}}$, where $T_{\boldsymbol{n}}(f)$ is a real, square multilevel Toeplitz matrix generated by a function $f\in L^1([-π,π]^d)$ and $Y_{\boldsymbol{n}}$ is the exchange matrix, which has $1$s on the main anti-diagonal. In line with what we have shown for unilevel flipped Toeplitz matrix sequences, the asymptotic spectrum is determined by a $2\times 2$ matrix-valued function whose eigenvalues are $\pm |…
In this paper, we study the numerical solutions of the multi-dimensional spatial fractional Allen-Cahn equations. After semi-discretization for the spatial fractional Riesz derivative, a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations with Toeplitz structure is obtained. For the sake of reducing the computational complexity, a two-level Strang splitting method is proposed, where the Toeplitz matrix in the system is split into the sum of a circulant matrix and a skew-circulant matrix. Therefore, the proposed method can be quickly implemented by the fast Fourier transform, substituting to ca…
In this thesis we study the preconditioning of square, non-symmetric and real Toeplitz systems. We prove theoretical results, which constitute sufficient conditions for the efficiency of the proposed preconditioners and the fast convergence to the solution of the system, by the Preconditioned Generalized Minimal Residual method (PGMRES) as well as by the Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient method applied to the system of Normal Equations (PCGN). As introduction, in the first chapter, we give the basic definitions and theorems/lemmas that we use to prove the theoretical results of the thesis. The…
We show that the global minimum solution of $\lVert A - BXC \rVert$ can be found in closed-form with singular value decompositions and generalized singular value decompositions for a variety of constraints on $X$ involving rank, norm, symmetry, two-sided product, and prescribed eigenvalue. This extends the solution of Friedland--Torokhti for the generalized rank-constrained approximation problem to other constraints as well as provides an alternative solution for rank constraint in terms of singular value decompositions. For more complicated constraints on $X$ involving structures such as Toep…
Focusing inversion of potential field data for the recovery of sparse subsurface structures from surface measurement data on a uniform grid is discussed. For the uniform grid the model sensitivity matrices exhibit block Toeplitz Toeplitz block structure, by blocks for each depth layer of the subsurface. Then, through embedding in circulant matrices, all forward operations with the sensitivity matrix, or its transpose, are realized using the fast two dimensional Fourier transform. Simulations demonstrate that this fast inversion algorithm can be implemented on standard desktop computers with su…
