The nearest young stellar groups are associated with "hubs" of column density exceeding 10^22 cm^-2, according to recent observations. These hubs radiate multiple "filaments" of parsec length, having lower column density and fewer stars. Systems with many filaments tend to have parallel filaments with similar spacing. Such "hub-filament structure" is associated with all of the nine young stellar groups within 300 pc, forming low-mass stars. Similar properties are seen in infrared dark clouds forming more massive stars. In a new model, an initial clump in a uniform medium is compressed into a self-gravitating, modulated layer. The outer layer resembles the modulated equilibrium of Schmid-Burgk (1967) with nearly parallel filaments. The filaments converge onto the compressed clump, which collapses to form stars with high efficiency. The initial medium and condensations have densities similar to those in nearby star-forming clouds and clumps. The predicted structures resemble observed hub-filament systems in their size, shape, and column density, and in the appearance of their filaments. These results suggest that hub-filament structure associated with young stellar groups may arise from compression of clumpy gas in molecular clouds.
Observations show that galaxies and their interstellar media are pervaded by strong magnetic fields with energies in the diffuse component being at least comparable to the thermal and even as large or larger than the turbulent energy. Such strong magnetic fields prevent the formation of stars because patches of the interstellar medium are magnetically subcritical. Here we present the results from global numerical simulations of strongly magnetised and self-gravitating galactic discs, which show that the buoyancy of the magnetic field due to the Parker instability leads at first to the formatio…
Filamentary structures are ubiquitous in high-mass star-forming molecular clouds. Their relation with high-mass star formation is still to be understood. Here we report interferometric observations toward 8 filamentary high-mass star-forming clouds. A total of 50 dense cores are identified in these clouds, most of which present signatures of high-mass star formation. Five of them are not associated with any star formation indicators, hence are prestellar core candidates. Evolutionary phases of these cores and their linewidths, temperatures, NH$_3$ abundances, and virial parameters are found to…
We introduce a new suite of simulations, "The Cloud Factory", which self-consistently forms molecular cloud complexes at high enough resolution to resolve internal substructure (up to 0.25 Msol in mass) all while including galactic-scale forces. We use a version of the Arepo code modified to include a detailed treatment of the physics of the cold molecular ISM, and an analytical galactic gravitational potential for computational efficiency. The simulations have nested levels of resolution, with the lowest layer tied to tracer particles injected into individual cloud complexes. These tracer ref…
We observationally investigate star formation (SF) process occurring in AFGL 5157 (area ~13.5 pc X 13.5 pc) using a multi-wavelength approach. Embedded filaments are seen in the {\it Herschel} column density map, and one of them is identified as an elongated filamentary feature (FF) (length ~8.3 pc; mass ~1170 Msun). Five Herschel clumps (Mclump ~45-300 Msun) are traced in the central part of FF, where an extended temperature structure (Td ~13.5-26.5 K) is observed. In the direction of the central part of FF, the warmer region at Td ~20-26.5 K spatially coincides with a mid-infrared (MIR) shel…
New models are presented for star-forming condensations in clusters. In each model, the condensation mass increases linearly with radius on small scales, and more rapidly on large scales, as in "thermal-nonthermal" models. Spherical condensations with this structure form protostars which match the IMF if their infall is subject to equally likely stopping. However such spherical models do not match the filamentary nature of cluster gas, and they are too extended to form protostars having high mass and short spacing. Two hybrid models are presented, which are spherical on small scales and filame…
We present an analysis of the relationship between the orientation of magnetic fields and filaments that form in 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of cluster-forming, turbulent molecular cloud clumps. We examine simulated cloud clumps with size scales of L ~ 2-4 pc and densities of n ~ 400-1000 cm^-3 with Alfven Mach numbers near unity. We simulated two cloud clumps of different masses, one in virial equilibrium, the other strongly gravitationally bound, but with the same initial turbulent velocity field and similar mass-to-flux ratio. We apply various techniques to analyze the filamentary an…
It has been proposed that the filament environment is closely connected to the pre-processing of galaxies, where their properties may have been changed by environmental effects in the filament before they fell into the galaxy cluster. We present the chemical properties of star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) in five filamentary structures (Virgo III, Leo Minor, Leo II A, Leo II B, and Canes Venatici) around the Virgo cluster using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectroscopic data and Galaxy Evolution Explorer ultraviolet photometric data. We investigate the relationship between stellar ma…
We present a multiwavelength study of the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G333.73+0.37. The region contains two distinct mid-infrared sources S1 and S2 connected by dark lanes of gas and dust. Cold dust emission from the IRDC is detected at seven wavelength bands and we have identified 10 high density clumps in the region. The physical properties of the clumps such as temperature: 14.3-22.3 K and mass: 87-1530 M_sun are determined by fitting a modified blackbody to the spectral energy distribution of each clump between 160 micron and 1.2 mm. The total mass of the IRDC is estimated to be…
Galaxies with polar rings consist of two subsystems, a disk and a ring, which rotate almost in orthogonal planes. In this paper, we analyze the parameters characterizing the composition of the interstellar medium and star formation in star-forming complexes, belonging to a polar ring galaxy NGC660. We show that star-forming regions in the ring of the galaxy are distinctively different from those in the galaxy disk. They possess substantially lower infrared luminosities, indicative of less dust mass in these regions than in a typical disk star-forming region. UV and H$α$ luminosities also appea…
Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the inner Galactic region $10^0 < l < 15^0$ and $-1^0 < b < 1^0$ are studied using GLIMPSE images and GLIMPSE data catalogue. A total number of 1107 Class I and 1566 Class II sources are identified in this Galactic region. With the help of GLIMPSE 5.8 $μ$m & 8 $μ$m images, we have identified the presence of 10 major star forming sites in the Galactic midplane, of which 8 of them are filamentary while 2 are possible clusters of Class I $&$ II sources. The length of the identified filaments are estimated as 8'-33' ($\sim$ 9 - 56 pc). Occurrence of Hub-Filamentary …
Magnetic Fields in Massive Star-forming Regions (MagMaR). VI. Magnetic Field Dragging in the Filamentary High-mass Star-forming Region G35.20--0.74N due to Gravity
Aims: To investigate properties of [CII]158 $μ$m emission of RCW36 in a dense filamentary cloud. Methods: [CII] observations of RCW36 covering an area of ~30 arcmin$\times$30 arcmin were carried out with a Fabry-Pérot spectrometer aboard a 100-cm balloon-borne far-infrared (IR) telescope with an angular resolution of 90 arcsec. By using AKARI and Herschel images, the spatial distribution of the [CII] intensity was compared with those of emission from the large grains and PAH. Results: The [CII] emission is spatially in good agreement with shell-like structures of a bipolar lobe observed in IR …
Numerous research studies on dust and molecular filaments have been conducted in star-forming sites, but only a limited number of studies have focused on ionized filaments. To observationally study this aspect, we present an analysis of multi-wavelength data of an area of $\sim$74.6 arcmin $\times$ 55 arcmin around l = 345.5 degree. Using the 843 MHz continuum map, two distinct ionized filaments (i.e., IF-A (extent $\sim$8.5 arcmin) and IF-B (extent $\sim$22.65 arcmin)) hosting ionized clumps powered by massive OB stars are identified. Using the $^{13}$CO(2-1) and C$^{18}$O(2-1) line data, the…
We present 230 GHz continuum polarization observations with the Atacama Large Milimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a resolution of 0$\farcs1$ ($\sim 540$~au) in the high-mass star-forming regions W51 e2 and e8. These observations resolve a network of core-connecting dust lanes, marking a departure from earlier coarser more spherical continuum structures. At the same time, the cores do not appear to fragment further. Polarized dust emission is clearly detected. The inferred magnetic field orientations are prevailingly parallel to dust lanes. This key structural feature is analyzed together w…
The onset of the {\it JWST}-era provides a much-improved opportunity to characterize the resolved structure of early star forming systems. Previous {\it Spitzer} observations of $z\gtrsim 6$ galaxies revealed the presence of old stars and luminous HII regions (via [OIII]+H$β$ emission), but the poor resolution stunted our ability to map their locations with respect to the star forming regions identified in the rest-UV. In this paper, we investigate the internal structure of 12 of the most luminous $z\simeq 6-8$ galaxies in the EGS field observed with recent {\it JWST}/NIRCam imaging. The syste…
We analyze parameters of the interstellar matter emission in star-forming complexes in the high metallicity galaxies NGC~628, NGC~2976, and NGC~3351, which have different morphological types. The relation between H$α$ emission and emission in CO and HI lines is considered along with the relation between H$α$ emission and dust emission in the infrared range (IR). The fluxes and surface brightnesses in the UV and IR correlate well with H$α$ emission. The HI emission also correlates well with H$α$, while the correlation between the CO and H$α$ emission is much less prominent. The ratio of the flu…
This paper gives a new way to diagnose the star-forming potential of a molecular cloud region from the probability density function of its column density (N-pdf). It gives expressions for the column density and mass profiles of a symmetric filament having the same N-pdf as a filamentary region. The central concentration of this characteristic filament can distinguish regions and can quantify their fertility for star formation. Profiles are calculated for N-pdfs which are pure lognormal, pure power law, or a combination. In relation to models of singular polytropic cylinders, characteristic fil…
The classical picture of a star-forming filament is a near-equilibrium structure, with collapse dependent on its gravitational criticality. Recent observations have complicated this picture, revealing filaments as a mess of apparently interacting subfilaments, with transsonic internal velocity dispersions and mildly supersonic intra-subfilament dispersions. How structures like this form is unresolved. Here we study the velocity structure of filamentary regions in a simulation of a turbulent molecular cloud. We present two main findings: first, the observed complex velocity features in filament…
We present mapping results of two prestellar cores, L1544 and L694-2, embedded in filamentary clouds in C$^{18}$O (3-2), $^{13}$CO (3-2), $^{12}$CO (3-2), HCO$^+$ (4-3), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (4-3) with the JCMT telescope to examine the role of the filamentary structures in the formation of dense cores in the clouds, with new distance estimates for L1544 ($175_{-3}^{+4}$ pc) and L694-2 ($203_{-7}^{+6}$ pc). From these observations, we found that the non-thermal velocity dispersion of two prestellar cores and their surrounding clouds are smaller than or comparable to the sound speed. This may indi…
We present the results of our study of starforming regions in the lenticular galaxy NGC 4324. During a complex analysis of multiwavelength observational data -- the narrow-band emission-line images obtained with the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University and the archival images in the broad bands of the SDSS, GALEX and WISE surveys -- we have detected young starforming complexes (clumps) located in the inner ring of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4324, and we have established a regular pattern of their distribution…
Context. Taurus represents an ideal region to study the three-dimensional distribution of the young stellar population and relate it to the associated molecular cloud. Aims. The second Gaia data release (DR2) enables us to investigate the Taurus complex in three dimensions, starting from a previously defined robust membership. The molecular cloud structured in filaments can be traced in emission using the public far-infrared maps from Herschel. Methods. From a compiled catalog of spectroscopically confirmed members, we analyze the 283 sources with reliable parallax and proper motions in the Ga…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations of the massive infrared dark cloud NGC 6334S (also known as IRDC G350.56+0.44), located at the southwestern end of the NGC 6334 molecular cloud complex. The H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and the NH$_{2}$D lines covered by the ALMA observations at a $\sim$3$^{\prime\prime}$ angular resolution ($\sim$0.02 pc) reveal that the spatially unresolved non-thermal motions are predominantly subsonic and transonic, a condition analogous to that found in low-mass star-forming molecular clouds. The obs…
It is now widely accepted that dense filaments of molecular gas are integral to the process of stellar birth. While numerical simulations have succeeded in reproducing filamentary structure in turbulent gas and analytic calculations have predicted the formation of dense gas filaments via radial collapse, the exact process(es) that generate/s such filaments which then form prestellar cores within them, is unclear. In this work we therefore study numerically the formation of a dense filament using a relatively simple set-up of a uniform-density cylinder in pressure equilibrium with its confining…
To probe the ongoing physical mechanism, we studied a wide-scale environment around AFGL 5142 (area ~25 pc x 20 pc) using a multi-wavelength approach. The Herschel column density (N(H_2)) map reveals a massive inverted Y-like structure (mass ~6280 M_sun), which hosts a pair of elongated filaments (lengths >10 pc). The Herschel temperature map depicts the filaments in a temperature range of ~12.5-13.5 K. These elongated filaments overlap each other at several places, where N(H_2) > 4.5 x 10^{21}cm^{-2}. The 12CO and 13CO line data also show two elongated cloud components (around -1.5 and -4.5 k…
We present new Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of a region in the filamentary infrared-dark cloud (IRDC) G011.11-0.12 containing young, star-forming cores. In addition to the 3.2mm continuum emission from cold dust, we map this region in the N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) line to trace the core kinematics with an angular resolution of 2" and velocity resolution of 0.2km s$^{-1}$. These data are presented in concert with recent {\em Herschel} results, single-dish N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) data, SABOCA 350$μ$m continuum data, and maps of the C$^{18}$O (2-1) transition obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. We…
Star formation in molecular clouds is intimately linked to their internal mass distribution. We present an unprecedentedly detailed analysis of the column density structure of a high-mass, filamentary molecular cloud, namely IRDC G11.11-0.12 (G11). We use two novel column density mapping techniques: high-resolution (FWHM=2", or ~0.035 pc) dust extinction mapping in near- and mid-infrared, and dust emission mapping with the Herschel satellite. These two completely independent techniques yield a strikingly good agreement, highlighting their complementarity and robustness. We first analyze the de…
Observations with modern instruments such as Herschel reveal that stars form clustered inside filamentary arms of ~1 pc length embedded in Giant Molecular Clouds. On smaller scales (~1000 au), observations of, e.g., IRAS 16293--2422 show signs of filamentary `bridge' structures connecting young protostars in their birth environment. We investigate the formation of a deeply embedded triple protostellar system, and characterize its connection to the filamentary structure present on GMC scales. Using the magnetohydrodynamical code RAMSES, we carry out zoom-in simulations of low-mass star formatio…
We have studied the structure and kinematics of the dense molecular gas in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC1) region with the N2H+ 3-2 line. The 6'x9' (~0.7x1.1 pc) region surrounding the Orion KL core has been mapped with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT). The combined SMA and SMT image having a resolution of ~5.4" (~2300 au) reveals multiple filaments with a typical width of 0.02-0.03 pc. On the basis of the non-LTE analysis using the N2H+ 3-2 and 1-0 data, the density and temperature of the filaments are estimated to be ~10^7 cm-3 and ~15-20 K, respectively…
We report here a study of gas, dust and star formation rates (SFRs) in the molecular cloud complexes (MCCs) surrounding the giant H$\,{\rm \scriptsize{II}}$ region RCW$\,$106 using $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO$\,$(1-0) data from the Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky way Survey (ThrUMMS) and archival data. We separate the emission in the Galactic Plane around $l=330^{\circ}$-$335^{\circ}$ and $b=-1^{\circ}$-$1^{\circ}$ into two main MCCs: the RCW$\,$106 (V$_{\rm LSR} = -48\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex and the MCC331-90(V$_{\rm LSR} = -90\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex. While RCW$\,$106 (M$\sim 5.9\times 10^{6}\…
We present a far-UV (FUV) study of the star-forming complexes (SFCs) in three nearby galaxies using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The galaxies are close to face-on and show significant outer disk star formation. Two of them are isolated (NGC 628, NGC 6946), and one is interacting with distant companions (NGC 5457). We compared the properties of the SFCs inside and outside the optical radius (R$_{25}$). We estimated the sizes, star formation rates (SFRs), metallicities, and the Toomre Q parameter of the SFCs. We find that the outer disk SFCs are at least ten times smaller in area th…
To indirectly study the internal structure of giant clumps in main sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1-3$, we target very turbulent and gas-rich local analogues from the DYNAMO sample with the Hubble Space Telescope, over a wavelength range of $\sim 200-480$ nm. We present a catalog of 58 clumps identified in six DYNAMO galaxies, including the WFC3/UVIS F225W, F336W, and F467M photometry where the ($225-336$) and ($336-467$) colours are sensitive to extinction and stellar population age respectively. We measure the internal colour gradients of clumps themselves to study their age and extinction pro…
The abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in low- and high-metallicity galaxies has been widely discussed since the time when detailed infrared data for extragalactic objects were first obtained. On the scales of entire galaxies, a smaller PAH abundance in lower-metallicity galaxies is often observed. We study this relationship for star-forming regions in nearby galaxies, for a sample containing more than 200 HII complexes, using spatially-resolved observations from the Herschel Space Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope. We use a model for the dust emission to estimate the p…
To probe the initial conditions for high-mass star and cluster formation, we investigate the properties of dense filaments within the infrared dark cloud G035.39-00.33 (IRDC G035.39) in a combined Very Large Array (VLA) and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) mosaic tracing the NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) emission down to 0.08 pc scales. Using agglomerative hierarchical clustering on multiple line-of-sight velocity component fitting results, we identify seven extended velocity-coherent components in our data, likely representing spatially coherent physical structures, some exhibiting complex gas motions. T…
We present a study of complexes of young massive star clusters (YMCs), embedded in extragalactic giant HII regions, based on the coupling of spectroscopic with photometric and spectrophotometric observations of about 100 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678). The complete observational database has been observed and accumulated within the framework of our comprehensive study of extragalactic star forming regions. The current paper presents the last part of either unpublished or refreshed photometric and spectropho…
Ionized gas probes the influence of massive stars on their environment. The Cygnus X region (d~1.5 kpc) is one of the most massive star forming complexes in our Galaxy, in which the Cyg OB2 association (age of 3-5 Myr and stellar mass $2 \times 10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$) has a dominant influence. We observe the Cygnus X region at 148 MHz using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and take into account short-spacing information during image deconvolution. Together with data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, we investigate the morphology, distribution, and physical conditions of low-density ionized …
We propose a new statistical model that can reproduce the hierarchical nature of the ubiquitous filamentary structures of molecular clouds. This model is based on the multiplicative random cascade, which is designed to replicate the multifractal nature of intermittency in developed turbulence. We present a modified version of the multiplicative process where the spatial fluctuations as a function of scales are produced with the wavelet transforms of a fractional Brownian motion realisation. This simple approach produces naturally a log-normal distribution function and hierarchical coherent str…
We present a catalogue of prestellar and starless cores within the Corona Australis molecular cloud using photometric data from the Herschel Space Observatory. At a distance of d~130 pc, Corona Australis is one of the closest star-forming regions. Herschel has taken multi-wavelength data of Corona Australis with both the SPIRE and PACS photometric cameras in a parallel mode with wavelengths in the range 70 μm to 500 μm. A complete sample of starless and prestellar cores and embedded protostars is identified. Other results from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey have shown spatial correlation betwe…
We present a study of star forming regions and its demographics in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy WLM using the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) multi band observations in three filters F148W, N245M and N263M. We find that the UV emission is extended at least up to 1.7 kpc, with the NUV emission more extended than the FUV. We create UV color maps ((F148W$-$N245M) and (F148W$-$N263M)) to study the temperature morphology of young stellar complexes with the help of theoretical models. We identify several complexes with temperature T $>$ 17500 K which are likely to be the OB associations p…
We present star formation activity in the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G53.2, a remarkable IRDC located at Galactic coordinates $(l,b)\sim(53^{\circ}.2,\,0^{\circ}.0)$ based on the census of young stellar object (YSO) candidates. IRDC G53.2 was previously identified as several IRDCs in mid-IR images, but it is in fact a long ($\gtrsim$45 pc) cloud, well consistent with a CO cloud at $v\sim23$ \kms\ (or at $d\sim$1.7 kpc). We present a point-source catalog of IRDC G53.2 that contains $\sim$370 sources from our photometry of the {\it Spitzer} MIPS 24 \um\ data and Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plan…
We analyze Spitzer GLIMPSE, MSX, and WMAP images of the Milky Way to identify 8 micron and free-free sources in the Galaxy. Seventy-two of the eighty-eight WMAP sources have coverage in the GLIMPSE and MSX surveys suitable for identifying massive star forming complexes (SFC). We measure the ionizing luminosity functions of the SFCs and study their role in the turbulent motion of the Galaxy's molecular gas. We find a total Galactic free-free flux f_ν = 46177.6 Jy; the 72 WMAP sources with full 8 micron coverage account for 34263.5 Jy (~75%), with both measurements made at ν=94GHz (W band). We f…
Galactic outflows driven by stellar feedback are crucial for explaining the inefficiency of star formation in galaxies. Although strong feedback can promote the formation of galactic discs by limiting star formation at early times and removing low angular momentum gas, it is not understood how the same feedback can result in diverse objects such as elliptical galaxies or razor thin spiral galaxies. We investigate this problem using cosmological zoom-in simulations of two galaxies forming within $10^{12}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ halos with almost identical mass accretion histories and halo spin parame…
A model of magnetic field structure is presented to help test the prevalence of flux freezing in star-forming clouds of various shapes, orientations, and degrees of central concentration, and to estimate their magnetic field strength. The model is based on weak-field flux freezing in centrally condensed Plummer spheres and spheroids of oblate and prolate shape. For a spheroid of given density contrast, aspect ratio, and inclination, the model estimates the local field strength and direction, and the global field pattern of hourglass shape. Comparisons with a polarization simulation indicate ty…
We present a review of observational studies of high-mass star formation, based mainly on our own research. It includes surveys of high-mass star-forming regions in various molecular lines and in continuum, investigations of filamentary infrared dark clouds, which represent the earliest phases of massive star formation, detailed studies of individual high-mass star-forming regions, dense cores and disks harboring massive (proto)stars, and associated outflows. Chemistry in these regions is discussed, too.
The formation scenario of brown dwarfs is still unclear because observational studies to investigate its initial condition are quite limited. Our systematic survey of nearby low-mass star-forming regions using the Atacama Compact Array (aka Morita array) and the IRAM 30 m telescope in 1.2 mm continuum has identified a centrally concentrated starless condensation with a central H$_2$ volume density of $\sim$10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$, MC5-N, connected to a narrow (width $\sim$0.03 pc) filamentary cloud in the Taurus L1495 region. The mass of the core is $\sim$0.2-0.4 $M_{\odot}$, which is an order of mag…
We use numerical simulations of turbulent cluster-forming regions to study the nature of dense filamentary structures in star formation. Using four hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic simulations chosen to match observations, we identify filaments in the resulting column density maps and analyze their properties. We calculate the radial column density profiles of the filaments every 0.05 Myr and fit the profiles with the modified isothermal and pressure confined isothermal cylinder models, finding reasonable fits for either model. The filaments formed in the simulations have similar radial co…
We present the results of N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$) observations toward Serpens South, the nearest cluster-forming, infrared dark cloud. The physical quantities are derived by fitting the hyperfine structure of N$_2$H$^+$. The Herschel and 1.1-mm continuum maps show that a pc-scale filament fragments into three clumps with radii of $0.1-0.2$ pc and masses of $40-230M_\odot$. We find that the clumps contain smaller-scale ($\sim 0.04$ pc) structures, i.e., dense cores. We identify 70 cores by applying CLUMPFIND to the N$_2$H$^+$ data cube. In the central cluster-forming clump, the excitation temperat…
