We derive slow-roll conditions for thawing k-essence with a separable Lagrangian $p(X,ϕ)=F(X)V(ϕ)$. We examine the evolution of the equation of state parameter, $w$, as a function of the scale factor $a$, for the case where $w$ is close to -1. We find two distinct cases, corresponding to $X \approx 0$ and $F_X \approx 0$, respectively. For the case where $X\approx0$ the evolution of $ϕ$ and hence $w$ is described by only two parameters, and $w(a)$ is model-independent and coincides with similar behavior seen in thawing quintessence models. This result also extends to non-separable Lagrangians where $X\approx0$. For the case $F_X \approx 0$, an expression is derived for $w(a)$, but this expression depends on the potential $V(ϕ)$, so there is no model-independent limiting behavior. For the $X \approx 0$ case, we derive observational constraints on the two parameters of the model, $w_0$ (the present-day value of $w$), and the $K$, which parametrizes the curvature of the potential. We find that the observations sharply constrain $w_0$ to be close to -1, but provide very poor constraints on $K$.
In this work we study a modified version of $f(R)$ gravity in which higher order kinetic terms of a scalar field are added in the action of vacuum $f(R)$ gravity. This type of theory is a type of $k$-essence $f(R)$ gravity, and it belongs to the general class of $f(R,ϕ,X)$ theories of gravity, where $ϕ$ is a scalar field and $X=\frac{1}{2}\partial^μϕ\partial_μϕ$. We focus on the inflationary phenomenology of the model, in the slow-roll approximation, and we investigate whether viable inflationary evolutions can be realized in the context of this theory. We use two approaches, firstly by imposi…
The reconstruction of a k-essence inflationary universe, considering the unification between the swampland criteria and the attractor given by the scalar spectral index $n_S(N)$ together with the slow roll parameter $ε(N)$in terms of the number of $e$-folds $N$ is studied. In the context of a coupling of the form $L(ϕ)\,X$ in the k-essence model, we find the effective potential $V$ and the coupling parameter $L$ in terms of the scalar spectral index and the slow roll parameter under a general formalism. To apply the unification in our model, we consider some examples in order to rebuild the ef…

We show that a theory with conformal invariance, which is explicitly broken by small terms, provides a solution to the fine tuning problem of the cosmological constant. In the absence of the symmetry breaking terms, the cosmological constant is zero. Its value in the full theory is controlled by the symmetry breaking terms. The symmetry breaking terms also provide the slow roll conditions, which may be useful in constructing a model of inflation.
We derive slow-roll conditions for thawing quintessence. We solve the equation of motion of $ϕ$ for a Taylor expanded potential (up to the quadratic order) in the limit where the equation of state $w$ is close to -1 to derive the equation of state as a function of the scale factor. We find that the evolution of $ϕ$ and hence $w$ are described by only two parameters. The expression for $w(a)$, which can be applied to general thawing models, coincides precisely with that derived recently by Dutta and Scherrer for hilltop quintessence. The consistency conditions of $|w+1|\ll 1$ are derived. The s…
We derive the slow-roll conditions for a non-minimally coupled scalar field (extended quintessence) during the radiation/matter dominated era extending our previous results for thawing quintessence. We find that the ratio $\ddotϕ/3H\dotϕ$ becomes constant but negative, in sharp contrast to the ratio for the minimally coupled scalar field. We also find that the functional form of the equation of state of the scalar field asymptotically approaches that of the minimally coupled thawing quintessence.
Slow roll solutions to inflationary potentials have been widely believed to be the only universal attractor. Over the last few years there has been growing interest in a new class of inflationary models known as Constant-Roll Inflation. Constant roll solutions are a generalization of "ultra-slow roll" dynamics, where the first slow roll parameter is small, but the second slow roll parameter $η$ is larger than unity. In Ultra-slow Roll Inflation, the large-$η$ solution is a dynamical transient, relaxing exponentially to the attractor de Sitter solution. In the constant roll generalization, rece…
We take a pragmatic, model independent approach to single field slow-roll inflation by imposing conditions to the slow-roll parameter $ε$ and its derivative $ε^{\prime }.$ To accommodate the recent (large) values of $r$ reported by the BICEP2 collaboration we advocate for a decreasing $ε$ during most part of inflation. However because at $ϕ_{\mathrm{H}}$, at which the perturbations are produced, some $50$ $-$ $60$ e-folds before the end of inflation, $ε$ is increasing we thus require that $ε$ develops a maximum for $ϕ> ϕ_{\mathrm{H}}$ and then decrease to small values where most e-folds are pr…
In this paper we investigate the implications of having a varying second slow-roll index on the canonical scalar field inflationary dynamics. We shall be interested in cases that the second slow-roll can take small values and correspondingly large values, for limiting cases of the function that quantifies the variation of the second slow-roll index. As we demonstrate, this can naturally introduce a smooth transition between slow-roll and constant-roll eras. We discuss the theoretical implications of the mechanism we introduce and we use various illustrative examples in order to better understa…
After giving a pedagogical review we clarify that the stochastic approach to inflation is generically reliable only at zeroth order in the (geometrical) slow-roll parameter $ε_1$ if and only if $ε_2^2\ll 6/ε_1$, with the notable exception of slow-roll. This is due to the failure of the stochastic $ΔN$ formalism in its standard formulation. However, by keeping the formalism in its regime of validity, we showed that, in ultra-slow-roll, the stochastic approach to inflation reproduces the power spectrum calculated from the linear theory approach.
Slow-roll inflation may simultaneously solve the horizon problem and generate a near scale-free fluctuation spectrum P(k). These two processes are intimately connected via the initiation and duration of the inflationary phase. But a recent study based on the latest Planck release suggests that P(k) has a hard cutoff, k_min > 0, inconsistent with this conventional picture. Here we demonstrate quantitatively that most---perhaps all---slow-roll inflationary models fail to accommodate this minimum cutoff. We show that the small parameter `epsilon' must be > 0.9 throughout the inflationary period t…
The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflationary models predict large-amplitude scalar perturbations at small scales which can lead to the primordial black hole production and scalar-induced gravitational waves. In general scalar perturbations in the USR models can only be obtained using numerical method because the usual slow-roll approximation breaks. In this work, we propose an analytical approach to estimate the scalar spectrum which is consistent with the numerical result. We find that the USR inflationary models predict a peak with power-law slopes in the scalar spectrum and energy spectrum of gra…
We investigate non-Gaussianity in general single field models without assuming slow-roll conditions or the exact scale-invariance of the scalar power spectrum. The models considered include general single field inflation (e.g. DBI and canonical inflation) as well as bimetric models. We compute the full non-Gaussian amplitude, its size fnl, its shape, and the running with scale n_{NG}. In doing so we show that observational constraints allow significant violations of slow roll conditions and we derive explicit bounds on slow-roll parameters for fast-roll single field scenarios. A variety of new…
Inflation models based on scalar-tensor theories of gravity are formulated in the Jordan frame but most often analysed in the Einstein frame. The transformation between the frames is not always desirable. In this work we formulate slow-roll conditions in the Jordan frame. This is achieved by comparing different background quantities and approximations on the same spatial slice in both frames. We use these approximations to derive simple equations that can be applied to compute inflation model observables in terms of Jordan frame quantities only. Finally, we apply some of the results to analyse…
We find multi-scalar effective field theories (EFTs) that can achieve a slow inflationary roll despite having a scalar potential that does not satisfy the usual slow-roll condition (d V)^2 << V^2/Mp^2. They evade the usual slow-roll conditions on $V$ because their kinetic energies are dominated by single-derivative terms rather than the usual two-derivative terms. Single derivatives dominate during slow roll and so do not require a breakdown of the usual derivative expansion that underpins calculational control in much of cosmology. The presence of such terms requires some sort of UV Lorentz-s…
The viability of slow-roll approximation is examined by considering the structure of phase spaces in scalar-tensor theories of gravitation and the analysis is exemplified with a nonminimally coupled scalar field to the spacetime curvature. The slow-roll field equations are obtained in the Jordan frame in two ways: first using the direct generalization of the slow-roll conditions in the minimal coupling case to nonminimal one, and second, conformal transforming the slow-roll field equations in the Einstein frame to the Jordan frame and then applying the generalized slow-roll conditions. Two inf…
We study corrections to the power spectra of curvature and tensor perturbations and the tensor-to-scalar ratio in single field slow roll inflation due to initial conditions imprinted by a fast-roll stage prior to slow roll. For a wide range of initial inflaton kinetic energy, this stage lasts only a few e-folds and merges smoothly with slow-roll leading to non-Bunch-Davies initial conditions for modes that exit the Hubble radius during slow roll. We describe a program that yields the dynamics in the fast-roll stage while matching to the slow roll stage independent of the inflationary potential…
In this work, we investigate how a smooth transition from a constant-roll to a slow-roll inflationary era may be realized, in the context of a canonical scalar field theory. We study in some detail the dynamical evolution of the cosmological system, and we investigate whether a stable attractor exists, both numerically and analytically. We also investigate the slow-roll era and as we demonstrate, partially compatibility of the resulting scalar theory, may be achieved, with the potential of the latter belonging to a class of modular inflationary potentials. The novel features of the constant-ro…
By using the relations between the slow-roll parameters and the power spectrum for the single field slow-roll inflation, we derive the scalar spectral tilt $n_s$ and the tensor to scalar ratio $r$ for the constant slow-roll inflation and obtain the constraint on the slow-roll parameter $η$ from the Planck 2015 results. The inflationary potential for the constant slow-roll inflation is then reconstructed in the framework of both general relativity and scalar-tensor theory of gravity, and compared with the recently reconstructed E model potential. In the strong coupling limit, we show that the $…
Many cosmological models invoke rolling scalar fields to account for the observed acceleration of the expansion of the universe. These theories generally include a potential V(phi) which is a function of the scalar field phi. Although V(phi) can be represented by a very diverse set of functions, recent work has shown the under some conditions, such as the slow roll conditions, the equation of state parameter w is either independent of the form of V(phi) or is part of family of solutions with only a few parameters. In realistic models of this type the scalar field couples to other sectors of th…
The slow-roll approximation is an analytical approach to study dynamical properties of the inflationary universe. In this article, systematic construction of the slow-roll expansion for effective loop quantum cosmology is presented. The analysis is performed up to the fourth order in both slow-roll parameters and the parameter controlling the strength of deviation from the classical case. The expansion is performed for three types of the slow-roll parameters: Hubble slow-roll parameters, Hubble flow parameters and potential slow-roll parameters. An accuracy of the approximation is verified by …
It is often claimed that the ultra-slow-roll regime of inflation, where the dynamics of the inflaton field are friction dominated, is a non-attractor and/or transient. In this work we carry out a phase-space analysis of ultra-slow roll in an arbitrary potential, $V(ϕ)$. We show that while standard slow roll is always a dynamical attractor whenever it is a self-consistent approximation, ultra-slow roll is stable for an inflaton field rolling down a convex potential with $M_{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{Pl}}} V''>|V'|$ (or for a field rolling up a concave potential with $M_{\scriptscriptstyle{\mat…
In this note we derive the slow-roll and rapid-roll conditions for the minimally and non-minimally coupled space-like vector fields. The function $f(B^{2})$ represents the non-minimal coupling effect between vector fields and gravity, the $f=0$ case is the minimal coupling case. For a clear comparison with scalar field, we define a new function $F=\pm B^{2}/12+f(B^{2})$ where $B^{2}=A_μA^μ$, $A_μ$ is the "comoving" vector field. With reference to the slow-roll and rapid-roll conditions, we find the small-field model is more suitable than the large-field model in the minimally coupled vector fi…
We show that the generalized slow-roll approach for calculating the power spectrum where the inflationary slow roll parameters are neither small nor slowly varying can be readily extended to models with non-canonical kinetic terms in the inflaton action. For example, rapid sound speed variations can arise in DBI models with features in the warp factor leading to features in the power spectrum. Nonetheless there remains a single source function for deviations that is simply related to the power spectrum. Empirical constraints on this source function can be readily interpreted in the context of …
We consider the impact of quantum diffusion on inflationary dynamics during an ultra-slow-roll phase, which can be of particular significance for the formation of primordial black holes. We show, by means of a fully analytical approach, that the power spectrum of comoving curvature perturbations computed in stochastic inflation matches precisely, at the linear level, the result obtained by solving the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation, even in the presence of an ultra-slow-roll phase. We confirm this result numerically in a model in which the inflaton has a polynomial potential and is coupled quadratic…
We study the stochastic formalism of inflation beyond the usual slow-roll approximation. We verify that the assumptions on which the stochastic formalism relies still hold even far from the slow-roll attractor. This includes demonstrating the validity of the separate universe approach to evolving long-wavelength scalar field perturbations beyond slow roll. We also explain that, in general, there is a gauge correction to the amplitude of the stochastic noise. This is because the amplitude is usually calculated in the spatially-flat gauge, while the number of e-folds is used as the time variable…
The recently introduced swampland criterion for de Sitter (arXiv:1806.08362) can be viewed as a (hierarchically large) bound on the smallness of the slow roll parameter $ε_V$. This leads us to consider the other slow roll parameter $η_V$ more closely, and we are lead to conjecture that the bound is not necessarily on $ε_V$, but on slow roll itself. A natural refinement of the de Sitter swampland conjecture is therefore that slow roll is violated at ${\cal O}(1)$ in Planck units in any UV complete theory. A corollary is that $ε_V$ need not necessarily be ${\cal O}(1)$, if $η_V \lesssim -{\cal O…
In this letter we discuss de Sitter vacua in maximal gauged supergravity in 4 dimensions. We show that, using the newly deformed theories introduced in arxiv:1209.0760, we can obtain de Sitter vacua with arbitrarily flat tachyonic directions in the SO(4,4)c models.
In this note we point out that, contrary to the standard point of view, slow roll inflation is due to high gravitational friction. We show that the requirement of slow roll coincides with the requirement of a flat scalar field potential in the case of minimally coupled scalar field. In this sense, the search for a successful inflationary theory may be more fruitful by shifting the focus on models with high gravitational friction. We review then a gravitational mechanism, the so called "Gravitationally Enhanced Friction" mechanism, such that high gravitational friction is dynamically generated …

We present a complete formulation of the scalar bispectrum in the unified effective field theory (EFT) of inflation, which includes the Horndeski and beyond-Horndeski Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi classes, in terms of a set of simple one-dimensional integrals. These generalized slow-roll expressions remain valid even when slow-roll is transiently violated and encompass all configurations of the bispectrum. We show analytically that our expressions explicitly preserve the squeezed-limit consistency relation beyond slow-roll. As an example application of our results, we compute the scalar bis…
We consider Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) inflationary models using the effective potential approach. We present evolution equations in the slow-roll regime using the effective potential and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The choice of the effective potential is related to an expression of the spectral index in terms of e-folding number $N_e$. The satisfaction of the slow-roll regime is mostly related to the form of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. The case of $r\sim1/N^2_e$ leads to a generalization of $α$-attractors inflationary parameters to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with exponential effectiv…
For primordial black holes (PBH) to be the dark matter in single-field inflation, the slow-roll approximation must be violated by at least ${\cal O}(1)$ in order to enhance the curvature power spectrum within the required number of efolds between CMB scales and PBH mass scales. Power spectrum predictions which rely on the inflaton remaining on the slow-roll attractor can fail dramatically leading to qualitatively incorrect conclusions in models like an inflection potential and misestimate the mass scale in a running mass model. We show that an optimized temporal evaluation of the Hubble slow-r…
Slow-roll inflation is analyzed in the context of modified gravity within the Palatini formalism. As shown in the literature, inflation in this framework requires the presence of non-traceless matter, otherwise it does not occur just as a consequence of the non-linear gravitational terms of the action. Nevertheless, by including a single scalar field that plays the role of the inflaton, slow-roll inflation can be performed in these theories, where the equations lead to an effective potential that modifies the dynamics. We obtain the general slow-roll parameters and analyze a simple model to il…
Ultra slow-roll inflation has recently been used to challenge the non-Gaussianity consistency relation. We show that this inflationary scenario belongs to a one parameter class of models and we study its properties and observational predictions. We demonstrate that the power spectrum remains scale-invariant and that the bi-spectrum is of the local type with fnl=5(3-ns)/4 which, indeed, represents a modification of the consistency relation. However, we also show that the system is unstable and suffers from many physical problems among which is the difficulty to correctly WMAP normalize the mode…
We numerically calculate the evolution of second order cosmological perturbations for an inflationary scalar field without resorting to the slow-roll approximation or assuming large scales. In contrast to previous approaches we therefore use the full non-slow-roll source term for the second order Klein-Gordon equation which is valid on all scales. The numerical results are consistent with the ones obtained previously where slow-roll is a good approximation. We investigate the effect of localised features in the scalar field potential which break slow-roll for some portion of the evolution. The…
The conventional slow-roll approximation is broken in the so-called "ultra slow-roll" models of inflation, for which the inflaton potential is exactly (or extremely) flat. The interesting nature of (canonical) ultra slow-roll inflation is that the curvature perturbation grows on superhorizon scales, but has a scale-invariant power spectrum. We study the ultra slow-roll inflationary dynamics in the presence of non-canonical kinetic terms of the scalar field, namely ultra slow-roll G-inflation. We compute the evolution of the curvature perturbation and show that the primordial power spectrum fol…
Ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation is a new mode of inflation which corresponds to the occasions when the inflaton field must traverse an extremely flat part of the scalar potential, when the usual slow-roll (SR) fails. We investigate USR and obtain an estimate for how long it lasts, given the initial kinetic density of the inflaton. We also find that, if the initial kinetic density is small enough, USR can be avoided and the usual SR treatment is valid. This has important implications for inflection-point inflation.
The BB-mode angular correlation power spectrum of CMB is obtained by considering the primordial gravitational waves in the squeezed vacuum state for various inflationary models and results are compared with the joint analysis of the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck 353 GHz data. The present results may constrain several models of inflation.
K-essence is a minimally-coupled scalar field whose Lagrangian density $\mathcal{L}$ is a function of the field value $ϕ$ and the kinetic energy $X=\frac{1}{2}\partial_μϕ\partial^μϕ$. In the thawing scenario, the scalar field is frozen by the large Hubble friction in the early universe, and therefore initial conditions are specified. We construct thawing k-essence models by generating Taylor expansion coefficients of $\mathcal{L}(ϕ, X)$ from random matrices. From the ensemble of randomly generated thawing k-essence models, we select dark energy candidates by assuming negative pressure and non-…
We elucidate the counting of the relevant small parameters in inflationary perturbation theory. Doing this allows for an explicit delineation of the domain of validity of the semi-classical approximation to gravity used in the calculation of inflationary correlation functions. We derive an expression for the dependence of correlation functions of inflationary perturbations on the slow-roll parameter $ε= -\dot{H}/H^2$, as well as on $H/M_p$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter during inflation. Our analysis is valid for single-field models in which the inflaton can traverse a Planck-sized range i…
We initially consider two simple situations where inflationary slow roll parameters are large and modes no longer freeze out shortly after exiting the horizon, treating both cases analytically. We then consider applications to transient phases where the slow roll parameters can become large, especially in the context of the common `fast-roll' inflation frequently used as a mechanism to explain the anomalously low scalar power at low $l$ in the CMB. These transient cases we treat numerically. We find when $ε$, the first slow roll parameter, and only $ε$ is large, modes decay outside the horizon…
We study the generation of helical magnetic fields during single field inflation induced by an axial coupling of the electromagnetic field to the inflaton. During slow roll inflation, we find that such a coupling always leads to a blue spectrum with $B^2(k) \propto k$, as long as the theory is treated perturbatively. The magnetic energy density at the end of inflation is found to be typically too small to backreact on the background dynamics of the inflaton. We also show that a short deviation from slow roll does not result in strong modifications to the shape of the spectrum. We calculate the…
We propose a new single field inflation model in which the usual slow-roll inflation is joined to a new period of slow-climb and slow-roll inflation through a short intermediate non-inflationary phase. We then show that primordial curvature perturbations can be enhanced at small scales, a sizable amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) can be produced which make up most of dark matter, the gravitational waves (GWs) induced by scalar metric perturbations that accompany with the formation of PBHs can be detectable by future GW experiments, and last but not least, our model is compatible with the…
Loop corrections to observables in slow-roll inflation are found to diverge no worse than powers of the log of the scale factor, extending Weinberg's theorem to quasi-single field inflation models. Demanding perturbation theory be valid during primordial inflation leads to constraints on the effective lagrangian. This leads to some interesting constraints and coincidences on the landscape of inflationary vacua.
We study the growth of superhorizon modes in the curvature perturbation during an ultra-slow-roll or a large-$η$ phase in single-field inflation. In a simple toy model, we derive the two-point correlation function of the curvature perturbation and show that the requirement for causality restricts the growth rate and hence puts a lower limit on the value of $η$. The toy model is then realized by considering an inflation potential with an inflection point. Our study is useful to assessing the growth of the curvature perturbation that seeds the formation of primordial black holes.
We develop a variant of the generalized slow roll approach for calculating the curvature power spectrum that is well-suited for order unity deviations in power caused by sharp features in the inflaton potential. As an example, we show that predictions for a step function potential, which has been proposed to explain order unity glitches in the CMB temperature power spectrum at multipoles l=20-40, are accurate at the percent level. Our analysis shows that to good approximation there is a single source function that is responsible for observable features and that this function is simply related …
We explore the possibility of a blue-tilted gravitational wave spectrum from potential-driven slow-roll inflation in the Horndeski theory. In Kamada et al. (2012), it was claimed that a blue gravitational wave spectrum cannot be obtained from stable potential-driven slow-roll inflation within the Horndeski framework. However, it has been demonstrated that the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves can be blue in inflation with the Gauss-Bonnet term, where the potential term is dominant and slow-roll conditions as well as the stability conditions are satisfied. To fill in this gap, we clari…
We implement Slow Roll Reconstruction -- an optimal solution to the inverse problem for inflationary cosmology -- within ModeCode, a publicly available solver for the inflationary dynamics. We obtain up-to-date constraints on the reconstructed inflationary potential, derived from the WMAP 7-year dataset and South Pole Telescope observations, combined with large scale structure data derived from SDSS Data Release 7. Using ModeCode in conjunction with the MultiNest sampler, we compute Bayesian evidence for the reconstructed potential at each order in the truncated slow roll hierarchy. We find th…
Transitions between different inflationary slow-roll scenarios are known to provide short non-slow-roll periods with non-trivial consequences. We consider the effect of quantum diffusion on the inflationary dynamics in a transition process. Using the stochastic δN formalism, we follow the detailed evolution of noises through a sharp transition modeled by the Starobinsky potential, although some of our results apply to any sharp transition. We find how the stochastic noise induced by the transition affects the coarse-grained fields. We then consider the special case that the potential is flat a…
We consider the effect of quantum diffusion on the dynamics of the inflaton during a period of ultra-slow-roll inflation. We extend the stochastic-$δ\mathcal{N}$ formalism to the ultra-slow-roll regime and show how this system can be solved analytically in both the classical-drift and quantum-diffusion dominated limits. By deriving the characteristic function, we are able to construct the full probability distribution function for the primordial density field. In the diffusion-dominated limit, we recover an exponential tail for the probability distribution, as found previously in slow-roll inf…
It is generally believed that in single-field slow-roll inflation, a large tensor-to-scalar ratio $r > 0.1$ requires inflaton field values close to or above the Planck scale. Recently, it has been claimed that $r > 0.15$ can be achieved with much smaller inflaton field values $Δϕ< M_{Pl}/10$. We show that in single-field slow-roll inflation, it is impossible to reconcile $r > 0.1$ with such small field values, independently of the form of the potential, and that the recent claim to the contrary is based on an invalid approximation. We conclude that the result of the BICEP2 measurement of $r > …
