A subset $X$ in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is called a $k$-distance set if there are exactly $k$ distinct distances between two distinct points in $X$ and a subset $X$ is called a locally $k$-distance set if for any point $x$ in $X$, there are at most $k$ distinct distances between $x$ and other points in $X$.
Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel gave the Fisher type upper bound for the cardinalities of $k$-distance sets on a sphere in 1977. In the same way, we are able to give the same bound for locally $k$-distance sets on a sphere. In the first part of this paper, we prove that if $X$ is a locally $k$-distance set attaining the Fisher type upper bound, then determining a weight function $w$, $(X,w)$ is a tight weighted spherical $2k$-design. This result implies that locally $k$-distance sets attaining the Fisher type upper bound are $k$-distance sets. In the second part, we give a new absolute bound for the cardinalities of $k$-distance sets on a sphere. This upper bound is useful for $k$-distance sets for which the linear programming bound is not applicable. In the third part, we discuss about locally two-distance sets in Euclidean spaces. We give an upper bound for the cardinalities of locally two-distance sets in Euclidean spaces. Moreover, we prove that the existence of a spherical two-distance set in $(d-1)$-space which attains the Fisher type upper bound is equivalent to the existence of a locally two-distance set but not a two-distance set in $d$-space with more than $d(d+1)/2$ points. We also classify optimal (largest possible) locally two-distance sets for dimensions less than eight. In addition, we determine the maximum cardinalities of locally two-distance sets on a sphere for dimensions less than forty.
In this paper we provide a generalization of the MPS construction of blocking sets of $PG(r,q^n)$ using subspaces of dimension $s\leq n-2$. By this construction, we determine a new non-planar example in $PG(3,q^6)$.
A finite set X in a metric space M is called an s-distance set if the set of distances between any two distinct points of X has size s. The main problem for s-distance sets is to determine the maximum cardinality of s-distance sets for fixed s and M. In this paper, we improve the known upper bound for s-distance sets in n-sphere for s=3,4. In particular, we determine the maximum cardinalities of three-distance sets for n=7 and 21. We also give the maximum cardinalities of s-distance sets in the Hamming space and the Johnson space for several s and dimensions.
We Use the method of linearly independent polynomials to derive an upper bound for the cardinality of a spherical s-distance set F where the sum of distinct inner products of any two elements from F is zero. Our result generalizes the well-known Gerzon's bound for the cardinality of an equiangular spherical set to a significantly broader class of spherical s-distance sets.
We study {0,α}-sets, which are sets of unit vectors of $\mathbb{C}^m$ in which any two distinct vectors have angle 0 or α. We investigate some distance-regular graphs that provide new constructions of {0,α}-sets using a method by Godsil and Roy. We prove bounds for the sizes of {0,α}-sets of flat vectors, and characterize all the distance-regular graphs that yield {0,α}-sets meeting the bounds at equality.
We have the Fisher type inequality and the linear programming bound as upper bounds for the cardinalities of $s$-distance sets on $S^{d-1}$. In this paper, we give a new upper bound for the cardinalities of $s$-distance sets on $S^{d-1}$ for any $s$. This upper bound improves the Fisher typer inequality and is useful for $s$-distance sets which are not applicable to the linear programming bound.
In this paper we study a certain generalization of combinatorial designs related to almost difference sets, namely the $t$-adesign, which was coined by Cunsheng Ding in 2015. It is clear that $2$-adesigns are a kind of partially balanced incomplete block design which naturally arise in many combinatorial and statistical problems. We discuss some of their basic properties and give several constructions of $2$-adesigns (some of which correspond to new almost difference sets, and others of which correspond to new almost difference families), as well as two constructions of $3$-adesigns. We also d…
We isolate conditions on the relative size of sets of natural numbers $A,B$ that guarantee a nonempty intersection $Δ(A)\capΔ(B)\ne\emptyset$ of the corresponding sets of distances. Such conditions apply to a large class of zero density sets. We also show that a variant of Khintchine's Recurrence Theorem holds for all infinite sets $A=\{a_1<a_2<...\}$ with $a_n\ll n^{3/2}$.
Discrete partially ordered sets can be turned into distance spaces in several ways. The distance functions may or may not satisfy the triangle inequality, and restriction of the distance to finite chains may or may not coincide with the natural, difference-of-height distance measured in a chain. For semilattices, a semimodularity condition ensures the good behavior of the distances considered. This condition is trivially satisfied by trees, and in lattices it coincides with the usual semimodularity property. For a large class of distance functions the triangle inequality is equivalent to semim…
The distribution of distances in the star graph $ST_n$, ($1<n\in\Z$), is established, and subsequently a threaded binary tree is obtained that realizes an orientation of $ST_n$ whose levels are given by the distances to the identity permutation, via a pruning algorithm followed by a threading algorithm. In the process, the distributions of distances of the efficient dominating sets of $ST_n$ are determined.
A Langford sequence of order $m$ and defect $d$ can be identified with a labeling of the vertices of a path of order $2m$ in which each labeled from $d$ up to $d+m-1$ appears twice and in which the vertices that have been label with $k$ are at distance $k$. In this paper, we introduce two generalizations of this labeling that are related to distances.
A spherical three-distance set is a finite collection $X$ of unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ such that for each pair of distinct vectors has three inner product values. We use the semidefinite programming method to improve the upper bounds of spherical three-distance sets for several dimensions. We obtain better bounds in $\mathbb{R}^7$, $\mathbb{R}^{20}$, $\mathbb{R}^{21}$, $\mathbb{R}^{23}$, $\mathbb{R}^{24}$ and $\mathbb{R}^{25}$. In particular, we prove that maximum size of spherical three-distance sets is $2300$ in $\mathbb R^{23}$.
We construct an infinite family of intriguing sets that are not tight in the Grassmann Graph of planes of PG$(n,q)$, $n\ge 5$ odd, and show that the members of the family are the smallest possible examples if $n\ge 9$ or $q\ge 25$.
We classify the maximal $m$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ which contain the representation of the Johnson graph $J(n, m)$ for $m = 2, 3$. Furthermore, we determine the necessary and sufficient condition for $n$ and $m$ such that the representation of the Johnson graph $J(n, m)$ is not maximal as an $m$-distance set. Also, we classify the maximal two-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ which contain the representation of $J(n - 1, 2)$.
In this paper we investigate partial spreads of $H(2n-1,q^2)$ through the related notion of partial spread sets of hermitian matrices, and the more general notion of constant rank-distance sets. We prove a tight upper bound on the maximum size of a linear constant rank-distance set of hermitian matrices over finite fields, and as a consequence prove the maximality of extensions of symplectic semifield spreads as partial spreads of $H(2n-1,q^2)$. We prove upper bounds for constant rank-distance sets for even rank, construct large examples of these, and construct maximal partial spreads of $H(3,…
We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain new partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. The first generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. In the second generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are $p$-ary weakly regular bent. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the first generalization are new.
Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in the plane that determines at most $n/5$ distinct distances. We show that no line can contain more than $O(n^{43/52}{\rm polylog}(n))$ points of $P$. We also show a similar result for rectangular distances, equivalent to distances in the Minkowski plane, where the distance between a pair of points is the area of the axis-parallel rectangle that they span.
A homogeneous set of $n$ points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space determines at least $Ω(n^{2d/(d^2+1)} / \log^{c(d)} n)$ distinct distances for a constant $c(d)>0$. In three-space, we slightly improve our general bound and show that a homogeneous set of $n$ points determines at least $Ω(n^{.6091})$ distinct distances.
A set $X$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called an $m$-distance set if the set of Euclidean distances between two distinct points in $X$ has size $m$. An $m$-distance set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be maximal if there does not exist a vector $x$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that the union of $X$ and $\{x\}$ still has only $m$ distances. Bannai--Sato--Shigezumi (2012) investigated the maximal $m$-distance sets which contain the Euclidean representation of the Johnson graph $J(n,m)$. In this paper, we consider the same problem for the Hamming graph $H(n,m)$. The Euclidean representatio…
A finite set $X$ in the Euclidean unit sphere is called an $s$-distance set if the set of distances between any distinct two elements of $X$ has size $s$. We say that $t$ is the strength of $X$ if $X$ is a spherical $t$-design but not a spherical $(t+1)$-design. Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel gave an absolute bound for the cardinality of an $s$-distance set. The results of Neumaier and Cameron-Goethals-Seidel imply that if $X$ is a spherical 2-distance set with strength 2, then the known absolute bound for 2-distance sets is improved. This bound are also regarded as that for a strongly regular graph…
A celebrated theorem due to Bannai-Bannai-Stanton says that if $A$ is a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, which determines $s$ distinct distances, then $$|A| \leq {d+s \choose s}.$$ In this note, we give a new simple proof of this result by combining Sylvester's Law of Inertia for quadratic forms with the proof of the so-called Croot-Lev-Pach Lemma from additive combinatorics.
The Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem is extended to designs in semilattices with certain conditions. As an application, we show the intersection theorems for the Hamming schemes, the Johnson schemes, bilinear forms schemes, Grassmann schemes, signed sets, partial permutations and restricted signed sets.
A partially ordered set is r-thick if every nonempty open interval contains at least r elements. This paper studies the flag vectors of graded, r-thick posets and shows the smallest convex cone containing them is isomorphic to the cone of flag vectors of all graded posets. It also defines a k-analogue of the Mobius function and k-Eulerian posets, which are 2k-thick. Several characterizations of k-Eulerian posets are given. The generalized Dehn-Sommerville equations are proved for flag vectors of k-Eulerian posets. A new inequality is proved to be valid and sharp for rank 8 Eulerian posets.
We investigate the size of the distance set determined by two subsets of finite dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. A lower bound of the size is given explicitly in terms of cardinalities of the two subsets. As a result, we improve upon the results by Rainer Dietmann. In the case that one of the subsets is a product set, we obtain further improvement on the estimate.

We introduce two generalizations of Kochen-Specker (KS) sets: projective KS sets and generalized KS sets. We then use projective KS sets to characterize all graphs for which the chromatic number is strictly larger than the quantum chromatic number. Here, the quantum chromatic number is defined via a nonlocal game based on graph coloring. We further show that from any graph with separation between these two quantities, one can construct a classical channel for which entanglement assistance increases the one-shot zero-error capacity. As an example, we exhibit a new family of classical channels w…
A finite set of distinct vectors $\mathcal{X}$ in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called an $s$-distance set if the set of mutual distances between distinct elements of $\mathcal{X}$ has cardinality $s$. In this paper we present a combined approach of isomorph-free exhaustive generation of graphs and Gröbner basis computation to classify the largest $3$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$, the largest $4$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the largest $6$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We also construct new examples of large $s$-distance sets for $d\leq 8$ and $s\leq 6$, …
A finite set of distinct vectors $\mathcal{X}$ in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called a $2$-distance set, if the set of mutual distances between distinct elements of $\mathcal{X}$ has cardinality exactly $2$. In this note we classify the $2$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$ up to isometry with computer-aided methods.
We consider a finite fields version of the Erdős-Falconer distance problem for two different sets. In a certain range for the sizes of the two sets we obtain results of the conjectured order of magnitude.
A subset $X$ in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is called a $k$-distance set if there are exactly $k$ distances between two distinct points in $X$. Einhorn and Schoenberg conjectured that the vertices of the regular icosahedron is the only 12-point three-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^3$ up to isomorphism. In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of 12-point three-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
A finite subset of a Euclidean space is called an $s$-distance set if there exist exactly $s$ values of the Euclidean distances between two distinct points in the set. In this paper, we prove that the maximum cardinality among all 5-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is 20, and every $5$-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with $20$ points is similar to the vertex set of a regular dodecahedron.
Let X be a 2-dimensional normed space, and let BX be the unit ball in X. We discuss the question of how large the set of extremal points of BX must be if X contains a well-distributed set whose distance set Delta satisfies the estimate |Δ\cap[0,N]|<CN^{3/2 -ε}. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a well-distributed set with |Δ\cap [0,N]| < CN.
The set of points in a metric space is called an $s$-distance set if pairwise distances between these points admit only $s$ distinct values. Two-distance spherical sets with the set of scalar products $\{α, -α\}$, $α\in[0,1)$, are called equiangular. The problem of determining the maximum size of $s$-distance sets in various spaces has a long history in mathematics. We suggest a new method of bounding the size of an $s$-distance set in compact two-point homogeneous spaces via zonal spherical functions. This method allows us to prove that the maximum size of a spherical two-distance set in $\ma…
In a recent paper Petrov and Pohoata developed a new algebraic method which combines the Croot-Lev-Pach Lemma from additive combinatorics and Sylvester's Law of Inertia for real quadratic forms. As an application, they gave a simple proof of the Bannai-Bannai-Stanton bound on the size of $s$-distance sets (subsets $\mbox{$\cal A$}\subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ which determine at most $s$ different distances). In this paper we extend their work and prove upper bounds for the size of $s$-distance sets in various real algebraic sets. This way we obtain a novel and short proof for the bound of Delsarte-…
The maximal density of a measurable subset of R^n avoiding Euclidean distance1 is unknown except in the trivial case of dimension 1. In this paper, we consider thecase of a distance associated to a polytope that tiles space, where it is likely that the setsavoiding distance 1 are of maximal density 2^-n, as conjectured by Bachoc and Robins. We prove that this is true for n = 2, and for the Voronoï regions of the lattices An, n >= 2.
A set of integers greater than 1 is primitive if no element divides another. Erdős proved in 1935 that the sum of $1/(n \log n)$ for $n$ running over a primitive set $A$ is universally bounded over all choices for $A$. In 1988 he asked if this universal bound is attained by the set of prime numbers. We answer the Erdős question in the affirmative for 2-primitive sets. Here a set is 2-primitive if no element divides the product of 2 other elements.
A finite subset $X$ of the Euclidean space is called an $m$-distance set if the number of distances between two distinct points in $X$ is equal to $m$. An $m$-distance set $X$ is said to be maximal if any vector cannot be added to $X$ while maintaining the $m$-distance condition. We investigate a necessary and sufficient condition for vectors to be added to a regular simplex such that the set has only $2$ distances. We construct several $d$-dimensional maximal $2$-distance sets that contain a $d$-dimensional regular simplex. In particular, there exist infinitely many maximal non-spherical $2$-…
A subset of a metric space is a k-distance set if there are exactly k non-zero distances occuring between points. We conjecture that a k-distance set in a d-dimensional Banach space (or Minkowski space), contains at most (k+1)^d points, with equality iff the unit ball is a parallelotope. We solve this conjecture in the affirmative for all 2-dimensional spaces and for spaces where the unit ball is a parallelotope. For general spaces we find various weaker upper bounds for k-distance sets.
For a set of distances D={d_1,...,d_k} a set A is called D-avoiding if no pair of points of A is at distance d_i for some i. We show that the density of A is exponentially small in k provided the ratios d_1/d_2, d_2/d_3, ..., d_{k-1}/d_k are all small enough. This resolves a question of Szekely, and generalizes a theorem of Furstenberg-Katznelson-Weiss, Falconer-Marstrand, and Bourgain. Several more results on D-avoiding sets are presented.
Dvorak (2013) gave a bound on the minimum size of a distance r dominating set in the terms of the maximum size of a distance 2r independent set and generalized coloring numbers, thus obtaining a constant factor approximation algorithm for the parameters in any class of graphs with bounded expansion. We improve and clarify this dependence using an LP-based argument inspired by the work of Bansal and Umboh (2017).

In this paper we investigate the Erdös/Falconer distance conjecture for a natural class of sets statistically, though not necessarily arithmetically, similar to a lattice. We prove a good upper bound for spherical means that have been classically used to study this problem. We conjecture that a majorant for the spherical means suffices to prove the distance conjecture(s) in this setting. For a class of non-Euclidean distances, we show that this generally cannot be achieved, at least in dimension two, by considering integer point distributions on convex curves and surfaces. In higher dimensions…
Two Delone sets are bounded distance equivalent to each other if there is a bijection between them such that the distance of corresponding points is uniformly bounded. Bounded distance equivalence is an equivalence relation. We show that the hull of a repetitive Delone set with finite local complexity has either one equivalence class or uncountably many. A very similar result is proven in arXiv:2011.00106 [math.MG].
Every graph G can be embedded in a Euclidean space as a two-distance set. The Euclidean representation number of G is the smallest dimension in which G is representable by such an embedding. We consider spherical and J-spherical representation numbers of G and give exact formulas for these numbers using multiplicities of polynomials that are defined by the Caley-Menger determinant. One of the main results of the paper are explicit formulas for the representation numbers of the join of graphs which are obtained from W. Kuperberg's type theorem for two-distance sets.
Kusner asked if $n+1$ points is the maximum number of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that the $\ell_p$ distance $(1<p<\infty)$ between any two points is $1$. We present an improvement to the best known upper bound when $p$ is large in terms of $n$, as well as a generalization of the bound to $s$-distance sets. We also study equilateral sets in the $\ell_p$ sums of Euclidean spaces, deriving upper bounds on the size of an equilateral set for when $p=\infty$, $p$ is even, and for any $1\le p<\infty$.
Let $A$ be a compact set in $\mathbb{R}$, and $E=A^d\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. We know from the Mattila-Sjölin's theorem if $\dim_H(A)>\frac{d+1}{2d}$, then the distance set $Δ(E)$ has non-empty interior. In this paper, we show that the threshold $\frac{d+1}{2d}$ can be improved whenever $d\ge 5$.
We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a differen…
We improve by an exponential factor the best known asymptotic upper bound for the density of sets avoiding 1 in Euclidean space. This result is obtained by a combination of an analytic bound that is an analogue of Lovasz theta number and of a combinatorial argument involving finite subgraphs of the unit distance graph. In turn, we straightforwardly obtain an asymptotic improvement for the measurable chromatic number of Euclidean space. We also tighten previous results for the dimensions between 4 and 24.
In this paper we investigate three unsolved conjectures in geometric combinatorics, namely Falconer's distance set conjecture, the dimension of Furstenburg sets, and Erdos's ring conjecture. We formulate natural $δ$-discretized versions of these conjectures and show that in a certain sense that these discretized versions are equivalent. In particular, it appears that to progress on any of these problems one must prove a quantitative statement about the existence of sub-rings of $R$ of dimension 1/2.
