The Dicke model describes N qubits (or two-level atoms) homogenously coupled to a bosonic mode. Here we examine an open-system realization of the Dicke model, which contains critical and chaotic behaviour. In particular, we extend this model to include an additional open transport qubit (TQ) (coupled to the bosonic mode) for passive and active measurements. We illustrate how the scaling (in the number of qubits N) of the superradiant phase transition can be observed in both current and current-noise measurements through the transport qubit. Using a master equation, we also investigate how the phase transition is affected by the back-action from the transport qubit and losses in the cavity. In addition, we show that the non-integrable quantum chaotic character of the Dicke model is retained in an open-system environment. We propose how all of these effects could been seen in a circuit QED system formed from an array of superconducting qubits, or an atom chip, coupled to a quantized resonant cavity (e.g., a microwave transmission line).

We demonstrate how to manipulate quantum chaos with a single photon in a hybrid quantum device combining cavity QED and optomechanics. Specifically, we show that this system changes between integrable and chaotic relying on the photon-state of the injected field. This onset of chaos originates from the photon-dependent chaotic threshold of the qubit-field coupling induced by the optomechanical interaction. By deriving the Loschmidt Echo we observe clear differences in the sensitivity to perturbations in the regular versus chaotic regimes. We also present classical analog of this chaotic behavi…
We study how chaos, introduced by a weak perturbation, affects the reliability of the output of analog quantum simulation. As a toy model, we consider the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model. Inspired by the semiclassical behavior of the order parameter in the thermodynamic limit, we propose a protocol to measure the quantum phase transition in the ground state and the dynamical quantum phase transition associated with quench dynamics. We show that the presence of a small time-dependent perturbation can render the dynamics of the system chaotic. We then show that the estimates of the critical poi…
Excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) are critical phenomena that generate singularities in the spectrum of quantum systems. {For systems with a classical counterpart,} these phenomena have their origin in the classical limit when the separatrix of an unstable periodic orbit divides phase space into different regions. Using a semiclassical theory of wave propagation based on the manifolds of unstable periodic orbits, we describe the quantum states associated with an ESQPT {for the quantum standard map: a paradigmatic example of a kicked quantum system}. {Moreover, we show that finit…
The critical behavior in an important class of excited state quantum phase transitions is signaled by the presence of a new constant of motion only at one side of the critical energy. We study the impact of this phenomenon in the development of chaos in a modified version of the paradigmatic Dicke model of quantum optics, in which a perturbation is added that breaks the parity symmetry. Two asymmetric energy wells appear in the semiclassical limit of the model, whose consequences are studied both in the classical and in the quantum cases. Classically, Poincaré sections reveal that the degree o…
The most commonly used physical realization of superconducting qubits for quantum circuits is a transmon. There are a number of superconducting quantum circuits applications, where Josephson junction critical current reproducibility over a chip is crucial. Here, we report on a robust chip scale $Al/AlO_x/Al$ junctions fabrication method due to comprehensive study of shadow evaporation and oxidation steps. We experimentally demonstrate the evidence of optimal Josephson junction electrodes thickness, deposition rate and deposition angle, which ensure minimal electrode surface and line edge rough…
We consider large rings of weakly-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, analyzing their transition to chaotic dynamics and loss of coherence. Initially, a ring is considered to be in an eigenstate, i.e. in a commensurate configuration with equal site fillings and equal phase differences between neighboring sites. Such a ring should exhibit a circulating current whose value will depend on the initial, non-zero phase difference. The appearance of such currents is a signature of an established coherence along the ring. If phase difference falls between $π/2$ and $3π/2$ and interparticle interaction …
We study many-body chaos in a (2+1)D relativistic scalar field theory at high temperatures in the classical statistical approximation, which captures the quantum critical regime and the thermal phase transition from an ordered to a disordered phase. We evaluate out-of-time ordered correlation functions (OTOCs) and find that the associated Lyapunov exponent increases linearly with temperature in the quantum critical regime, and approaches the non-interacting limit algebraically in terms of a fluctuation parameter. OTOCs spread ballistically in all regimes, also at the thermal phase transition, …
