We give a new explanation for why some biological systems can stay quantum coherent for long times at room temperatures, one of the fundamental puzzles of quantum biology. We show that systems with the right level of complexity between chaos and regularity can increase their coherence time by orders of magnitude. Systems near Critical Quantum Chaos or Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) can have long coherence times and coherent transport at the same time. The new theory tested in a realistic light harvesting system model can reproduce the scaling of critical fluctuations reported in recent experiments. Scaling of return probability in the FMO light harvesting complex shows the signs of universal return probability decay observed at critical MIT. The results may open up new possibilities to design low loss energy and information transport systems in this Poised Realm hovering reversibly between quantum coherence and classicality.
We propose an analytically tractable neural connectivity model with power-law distributed synaptic strengths. When threshold neurons with biologically plausible number of incoming connections are considered, our model features a continuous transition to chaos and can reproduce biologically relevant low activity levels and scale-free avalanches, i.e. bursts of activity with power-law distributions of sizes and lifetimes. In contrast, the Gaussian counterpart exhibits a discontinuous transition to chaos and thus cannot be poised near the edge of chaos. We validate our predictions in simulations …

The ability of discrete-time nonlinear recurrent neural networks to store time-varying small input signals is investigated by mean-field theory. The combination of a small input strength and mean-field assumptions makes it possible to derive an approximate expression for the conditional probability density of the state of a neuron given a past input signal. From this conditional probability density, we can analytically calculate short-term memory measures, such as memory capacity, mutual information, and Fisher information, and determine the relationships among these measures, which have not b…
We derive lower bounds for the variance of the difference of energies between incongruent ground states, i.e., states with edge overlaps strictly less than one, of the Edwards-Anderson model on ${\mathbb Z}^d$. The bounds highlight a relation between the existence of incongruent ground states and the absence of edge disorder chaos. In particular, it suggests that the presence of disorder chaos is necessary for the variance to be of order less than the volume. In addition, a relation is established between the scale of disorder chaos and the size of critical droplets. The results imply a long-c…

Shedding light onto how biological systems represent, process and store information in noisy environments is a key and challenging goal. A stimulating, though controversial, hypothesis poses that operating in dynamical regimes near the edge of a phase transition, i.e. at criticality or the "edge of chaos", can provide information-processing living systems with important operational advantages, creating, e.g., an optimal trade-off between robustness and flexibility. Here, we elaborate on a recent theoretical result, which establishes that the spectrum of covariance matrices of neural networks r…

We study randomly initialized residual networks using mean field theory and the theory of difference equations. Classical feedforward neural networks, such as those with tanh activations, exhibit exponential behavior on the average when propagating inputs forward or gradients backward. The exponential forward dynamics causes rapid collapsing of the input space geometry, while the exponential backward dynamics causes drastic vanishing or exploding gradients. We show, in contrast, that by adding skip connections, the network will, depending on the nonlinearity, adopt subexponential forward and b…

We explicitly construct the quantum field theory corresponding to a general class of deep neural networks encompassing both recurrent and feedforward architectures. We first consider the mean-field theory (MFT) obtained as the leading saddlepoint in the action, and derive the condition for criticality via the largest Lyapunov exponent. We then compute the loop corrections to the correlation function in a perturbative expansion in the ratio of depth $T$ to width $N$, and find a precise analogy with the well-studied $O(N)$ vector model, in which the variance of the weight initializations plays t…
