It is shown that only particular kinds of matter (in terms of the "radial" pressure to density ratio $w$) can coexist with Killing horizons in black-hole or cosmological space-times. Thus, for arbitrary (not necessarily spherically symmetric) static black holes, admissible are vacuum matter ($w=-1$, i.e., the cosmological constant or some its generalization) and matter with certain values of $w$ between 0 and -1, in particular, a gas of disordered cosmic strings ($w=-1/3$). If the cosmological evolution starts from a horizon (the so-called Null Big Bang scenarios), this horizon can co-exist with vacuum matter and certain kinds of phantom matter with $w\geq -3$. It is concluded that normal matter in such scenarios is entirely created from vacuum.
Einstein-matter theories in which hairy black-hole configurations have been found are studied. We prove that the nontrivial behavior of the hair must extend beyond the null circular orbit (the photonsphere) of the corresponding spacetime. We further conjecture that the region above the photonsphere contains at least 50% of the total hair's mass. We support this conjecture with analytical and numerical results.
Apart from the Kerr-Newman black holes, the hairy black holes in general relativity have been widely investigated in the gravity and cosmology. In this paper, we extend the Sorce-Wald method to prove the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of the static and spherically symmetric hairy black holes in the Einstein gravity without using the explicit expressions of the metric and lagrangian for matter fields. We examine the WCCC in the collision process without requiring the spherically symmetry of the perturbation matter fields. After assuming the stability condition of spacetime and applyin…
It is shown that the conserved charges on the event horizon and the Cauchy horizon associated to scalar perturbations on extremal black holes are externally measurable from null infinity. This suggests that these charges have the potential to serve as an observational signature. The proof of this result is based on obtaining precise late-time asymptotics for the radiation field of outgoing perturbations.
It has been shown recently that extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes perturbed by a minimally coupled, free, massless scalar field have permanent scalar hair. The hair - a conserved charge calculated at the black hole's event horizon - can be measured by a certain expression at future null infinity: the latter approaches the hair inversely in time. We generalize this newly discovered hair also for extreme Kerr black holes. We study the behavior of nearly extreme black hole hair and its measurement at future null infinity as a transient phenomenon. For nearly extreme black holes the measureme…
In the black hole spacetime, a no short hair theorem was proved, which states that the effective radius of black hole hairs must extend beyond the null circular orbit. In the present paper, in the horizonless gravity, we find a similar no short hair behavior that the effective radius of matter fields must also extend beyond the null circular orbit of ultra-compact stars.
Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics is generalized to curved space-times. The equations of motion are written for the case of static spherically symmetric black holes and their exterior solutions are analyzed using Bekenstein's method. It is shown the solutions split-up into two parts, namely a non-homogeneous (asymptotically massless) regime and a homogeneous (asymptotically massive) sector which is null outside the event horizon. In addition, in the simplest approach to Bopp-Podolsky black holes, the non-homogeneous solutions are found to be Maxwell's solutions leading to a Reissner-Nordström blac…
The time-like and null-like geodesics around compact objects are some of the best tools to classify and understand the structure of a space-time. In this paper, we study the null geodesics around charged static dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The physical parameters for non-radial geodesics including the effective potential, effective force, radius of the photon sphere and impact parameter are obtained and effects of the charge parameter and dilaton coupling constant on these quantities are studied. Possible photon motions for different values of the impact parameter a…
The recently proved `no short hair' theorem asserts that, if a spherically-symmetric static black hole has hair, then this hair (the external fields) must extend beyond the null circular geodesic (the "photonsphere") of the corresponding black-hole spacetime: $r_{\text{field}}>r_{\text{null}}$. In this paper we provide compelling evidence that the bound can be {\it violated} by {\it non}-spherically symmetric hairy black-hole configurations. To that end, we analytically explore the physical properties of cloudy Kerr-Newman black-hole spacetimes -- charged rotating black holes which support lin…
We study analytically the asymptotic late-time evolution of realistic rotating collapse. This is done by considering the asymptotic late-time solutions of Teukolsky's master equation, which governs the evolution of gravitational, electromagnetic, neutrino and scalar perturbations fields on Kerr spacetimes. In accordance with the no-hair conjecture for rotating black-holes we show that the asymptotic solutions develop inverse power-law tails at the asymptotic regions of timelike infinity, null infinity and along the black-hole outer horizon (where the power-law behaviour is multiplied by an osc…
We consider three-dimensional gravity based on torsion. Specifically, we consider an extension of the so-called Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity in the presence of a scalar field with a self-interacting potential, where the scalar field is non-minimally coupled with the torsion scalar. Then, we find asymptotically AdS hairy black hole solutions, which are characterized by a scalar field with a power-law behavior, being regular outside the event horizon and null at spatial infinity and by a self-interacting potential, which tends to an effective cosmological constant at spatial inf…
It has recently been revealed that spinning black holes of the photon-fluid model can support acoustic `clouds', stationary density fluctuations whose spatially regular radial eigenfunctions are determined by the $(2+1)$-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation of an effective massive scalar field. Motivated by this intriguing observation, we use {\it analytical} techniques in order to prove a no-short hair theorem for the composed acoustic-black-hole-scalar-clouds configurations. In particular, it is proved that the effective lengths of the stationary bound-state co-rotating acoustic scalar clouds a…
We investigate a particular regularization of big bang singularity, which remains within the domain of 4-dimensional general relativity but allowing for degenerate metrics. We study the geodesics and geodesic congruences in the modified Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe. In particular, we calculate the expansion of timelike and null geodesic congruences. Based on these results, we also briefly discuss the cosmological singularity theorems.
In a recent paper (Phys. Dark Univ. {\bf 31}, 100744 (2021)) it has been obtained new static black hole solutions with primary hairs by the Gravitational Decoupling. In this work we either study the geodesic motion of massive and massless particles around those solutions and restrict the values of the primary hairs by observational data. In particular, we obtain the effective potential, the innermost stable circular orbits, the marginally bounded orbit, and the periastron advance for time--like geodesics. In order to restrict the values taken by the primary hairs we explore their relationship …
Null and timelike equatorial orbits are investigated in a family of hairy black holes in the cubic Galileon theory. These include rotating generalizations of static black hole metrics supporting a time-dependent scalar field. Depending on the coupling and rotation, the properties of the geodesics expectedly deviate from general relativity. In particular, it is found that stable circular geodesics only exist below a critical coupling, which is related to the existence of an outermost stable circular orbit. Focusing on the strong-field region, images of an accretion disk are also produced to hig…
In a very interesting paper, Hod has proven that the equatorial null circular geodesic provides the extreme orbital period to circle a kerr black hole, which is closely related to the Fermat's principle. In the present paper, we extend the discussion to kerr black holes with scalar field hair. We show that the circle with the extreme orbital period is still identical to the null circular geodesic. Our analysis also implies that the Hod's theorem may be a general property in any axially symmetric spacetime with reflection symmetry on the equatorial plane.
If a black hole has hair, how short can this hair be? A partial answer to this intriguing question was recently provided by the 'no-short hair' theorem which asserts that the external fields of a spherically-symmetric electrically neutral hairy black-hole configuration must extend beyond the null circular geodesic which characterizes the corresponding black-hole spacetime. One naturally wonders whether the no-short hair inequality $r_{\text{hair}}>r_{\text{null}}$ is a generic property of all electrically neutral hairy black-hole spacetimes? In this paper we provide evidence that the answer to…
The extreme Reissner-Nordström solution has a discrete conformal isometry that maps the future event horizon to future null infinity and vice versa, the Couch-Torrence inversion isometry. We study the dynamics of a probe Maxwell field on the extreme Reissner-Nordström solution in light of this symmetry. We present a gauge fixing that is compatible with the inversion symmetry. The gauge fixing allows us to relate the gauge parameter at the future horizon to future null infinity, which further allows us to study global charges for large gauge symmetries in the exterior of the extreme Reissner-No…
In this paper, we first consider null geodesics of a class of charged, spherical and asymptotically flat hairy black holes in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with a non-minimal coupling for the scalar and electromagnetic fields. Remarkably, we show that there are two unstable circular orbits for a photon in a certain parameter regime, corresponding to two unstable photon spheres of different sizes outside the event horizon. To illustrate the optical appearance of photon spheres, we then consider a simple spherical model of optically thin accretion on the hairy black hole, and obtain the accr…

One interesting proposal to solve the black hole information loss paradox without modifying either general relativity or quantum field theory, is the soft hair, a diffeomorphism charge that records the anisotropic radiation in the asymptotic region. This proposal, however, has been challenged, given that away from the source the soft hair behaves as a coordinate transformation that forms an Abelian group, thus unable to store any information. To maintain the spirit of the soft hair but circumvent these obstacles, we consider Hawking radiation as a probe sensitive to the entire history of the b…
We develop a unified framework for the construction of soft dressings at boundaries of spacetime, such as the null infinity of Minkowski spacetime and the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The construction is based on an old proposal of Mandelstam for quantizing QED and considers matter fields dressed by Wilson lines. Along time-like paths, the Wilson lines puncturing the boundary are the analogs of flat space Faddeev-Kulish dressings. We focus on the Schwarzschild black hole where our framework provides a quantum-field-theoretical perspective of the Hawking-Perry-Strominger viewpoint tha…
We prove a no Cauchy horizon theorem for general nonlinear electrodynamics black holes with charged scalar hairs. By constructing a radially conserved charged, we show that there is no inner Cauchy horizon for both spherical and planar symmetric cases, independent of the form of scalar potential and nonlinear electrodynamics. After imposing the null energy condition, we are also able to rule out the existence of the Cauchy horizon for the hyperbolic black holes. We take the Born-Infeld black hole as a concrete example to study the interior dynamics beyond the event horizon. When the contributi…
For a static and spherically symmetric black hole, a photon sphere is composed of circular null geodesics of fixed radius, and plays an important role in observing the black hole. Recently, in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields, a class of hairy black holes has been found to possess two unstable and one stable circular null geodesics on the equatorial plane, corresponding to three photon spheres outside the event horizon. In this paper, we study quasinormal modes of the scalar field, which are associated with these circula…
We completely classify Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solutions with spatial curvature $K=0,\pm 1$ and equation of state $p=wρ$, according to their conformal structure, singularities and trapping horizons. We do not assume any energy conditions and allow $ρ< 0$, thereby going beyond the usual well-known solutions. For each spatial curvature, there is an initial spacelike big-bang singularity for $w>-1/3$ and $ρ>0$, while no big-bang singularity for $w<-1$ and $ρ>0$. For $K=0$ or $-1$, $-1<w<-1/3$ and $ρ>0$, there is an initial null big-bang singularity. For each spatial curvature, there i…
We study the existence and stability of circular geodesics in a family of asymptotically AdS static black holes in New Massive Gravity. We show that the existence of such geodesics is determined by the sign of the hair parameter. For a positive hair parameter the stability regions follow the usual pattern, with an innermost unstable null geodesic separated from the horizon, followed by a region of unstable timelike geodesics and then stable timelike geodesics extending in the asymptotic region.
In this paper, we follow up on the discovery of a new type of solution in the Einstein-Maxwell system coupled minimally to a self-interacting complex scalar field. For sufficiently large gravitational coupling and sufficiently small electromagnetic coupling we demonstrate that boson stars as well as black holes can carry scalar hair that shows a distinct new feature~: a number of spatial oscillations in the scalar field away from the core or horizon, respectively. These spatial oscillations appear also in the curvature invariants and hence should be a detectable feature of the space-time. As a…
We study the null geodesics in a static circularly symmetric (SCS) black hole spacetime which is a solution in the $(2+1)$-dimensional massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT massive gravity). We obtain analytic solutions for the null geodesic equation in the SCS black hole background and find the explicit form of deflection angles. We see that for various values of the impact parameter, the deflection angle can be positive, negative or even zero in this black hole spacetime. The negative deflection angle indicates the repulsive behavior of the gravity which comes from t…
