Photovoltaic Hall effect -- the Hall effect induced by intense, circularly-polarized light in the absence of static magnetic fields -- has been proposed in Phys. Rev. B 79, 081406R (2009) for graphene where a massless Dirac dispersion is realized. The photovoltaic Berry curvature (a nonequilibrium extension of the standard Berry curvature) is the key quantity to understand this effect, which appears in the Kubo formula extended to Hall transport in the presence of strong AC field backgrounds. Here we elaborate the properties of the photovoltaic curvature such as the frequency and field strength dependence in the honeycomb lattice.
We analyse the Kitaev honeycomb model, by means of the Berry curvature with respect to Hamiltonian parameters. We concentrate on the ground-state vortex-free sector, which allows us to exploit an appropriate Fermionisation technique. The parameter space includes a time-reversal breaking term which provides an analytical headway to study the curvature in phases in which it would otherwise vanish. The curvature is then analysed in the limit in which the time-reversal-symmetry-breaking perturbation vanishes. This provides remarkable information about the topological phase transitions of the model…
We develop a rigorous and highly accurate technique for calculation of the Berry phase in systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian within the context of the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. The method is based on the recently found solution of the model which uses the Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization in an exact effective spin-hardcore boson representation. We specifically simulate the braiding of two non-Abelian vortices (anyons) in a four vortex system characterized by a two-fold degenerate ground state. The result of the braiding is the non-Abelian Berry matrix which is in excellent agreement w…
We investigate both first-order topology, as realized through Haldane's model, and second-order topology, implemented through an additional Kekulé-distortion, on the honeycomb lattice. The interplay and competition of both terms result in a phase diagram at half-filling which contains twelve distinct phases. All phases can be characterized by the first Chern number or by a quantized $\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry phase. Highlights include phases with high Chern numbers, a novel $\mathbb{Z}_6$ topological phase, but also coupled kagome-lattice Chern insulators. Furthermore, we explore the insulating phas…
Vortex magnetic structure in artificial honeycomb lattice provides a unique platform to explore emergent properties due to the additional Berry phase curvature imparted by chiral magnetization to circulating electrons via direct interaction. We argue that while the perpendicularly-aligned magnetic component leads to the quantized flux of monopole at the center of the Berry sphere, the in-plane vortex circulation of magnetization gives rise to unexpected non-trivial topological Berry phase due to the gauge field transformation. The unprecedented effect signifies the importance of vector potenti…
The emission of pure spin currents by mechanical deformations, the piezospintronic effect, in antiferromagnets is studied. We characterize the piezospintronic effect in an antiferromagnetic honeycomb monolayer in response to external strains. It is shown that the strain tensor components can be evaluated in terms of the spin Berry phase. In addition, we propose an experimental setup to detect the piezo-spin current generated in the piezospintronic material through the inverse spin Hall effect. Our results apply to a wide family of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic materials without inversion s…
We investigated the topological property of magnon bands in the collinear magnetic orders of zigzag and stripy phases for the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice and identified Berry curvature and symmetry constraints on the magnon band structure. Different symmetries of both zigzag and stripy phases lead to different topological properties, in particular, the magnon bands of the stripy phase being disentangled with a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) term with non-zero spin Chern number. This is corroborated by calculating the spin Nernst effect. Our study establishes the existence of the non…
Weyl semimetals (WSM) have been discovered in time-reversal symmetric materials, featuring monopoles of Berry's curvature in momentum space. WSM have been distinguished between Type-I and II where the velocity tilting of the cone in the later ensures a finite area Fermi surface. To date it has not been clear whether the two types results in any qualitatively new phenomena. Here we focus on the shift-current response ($σ_{shift}(ω)$), a second order optical effect generating photocurrents. Surprisingly we find that up to an order unity constant, $σ_{shift}(ω)\sim \frac{e^3}{h^2}\frac{1}ω$ in Ty…
In this Letter, a tunable valley polarization is investigated for honeycomb systems with broken inversion symmetry such as transition-metal dichalcogenide MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) monolayers through elliptical pumping. As compared to circular pumping, elliptical pumping is more universal and effective method to create coherent valley polarization. When two valleys of MX2 monolayers are doped or polarized, a novel anomalous valley orbital magnetic moment Hall effect driven by opposite Berry curvatures at different valleys is predicted and can generate orbital magnetic moment current without t…
There are a variety of nonlinear optical effects including higher harmonic generations, photovoltaic effects, and nonlinear Kerr rotations. They are realized by the strong light irradiation to materials that results in nonlinear polarizations in the electric field. These are of great importance in studying the physics of excited states of the system as well as for applications to optical devices and solar cells. Nonlinear properties of materials are usually described by the nonlinear susceptibilities $χ$'s, which have complex expressions including many matrix elements and energy denominators. …
We theoretically investigate the transport of magnon orbitals in a honeycomb antiferromagnet. We find that the magnon orbital Berry curvature is finite even without spin-orbit coupling and thus the resultant magnon orbital Hall effect is an intrinsic property of the honeycomb antiferromagnet rooted only in the exchange interaction and the lattice structure. Due to the intrinsic nature of the magnon orbital Hall effect, the magnon orbital Nernst conductivity is estimated to be orders of magnitude larger than the predicted values of the magnon spin Nernst conductivity that requires finite spin-o…
By quantum Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in gapped honeycomb lattices, we show the existence of bosonic edge states. For single layer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge states can be controlled to appear, cross the gap and merge into bulk states by an on-site potential applied on the outmost sites of the boundary. On bilayer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge state traversing the gap at half filling is demonstrated. The topological origin of the bosonic edge states is discussed with pseudo Berry curvature. The results will simulate experimental studies of these exotic bosonic edge states with ul…
We study finite temperature topological phase transitions of the Kitaev's spin honeycomb model in the vortex-free sector with the use of the recently introduced mean Uhlmann curvature. We employ an appropriate Fermionisation procedure to study the system as a two-band p-wave superconductor described by a BdG Hamiltonian. This allows to study relevant quantities such as Berry and mean Uhlmann curvatures in a simple setting. More specifically, we consider the spin honeycomb in the presence of an external magnetic field breaking time reversal symmetry. The introduction of such an external perturb…
Electrons moving in a Bloch band are known to acquire an anomalous Hall velocity proportional to the Berry curvature of the band which is responsible for the intrinsic linear Hall effect in materials with broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we demonstrate that there is also an anomalous correction to the electron acceleration which is proportional to the Berry curvature dipole and is responsible for the Nonlinear Hall effect recently discovered in materials with broken inversion symmetry. This allows us to uncover a deeper meaning of the Berry curvature dipole as a nonlinear version of the Dr…
We describe a method for measuring the Berry curvature from the wave-packet dynamics in perturbed arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides with honeycomb lattice structure. To disentangle the effects of the Berry curvature and the energy dispersion we utilize a difference measurement by propagating the wave packet under the influence of a constant external force back and forth. In this way a non-vanishing Berry curvature is obtained for photonic graphene with small sublattice bias or strain, where the relative error between the exact Berry curvature and the one derived from the semicl…
Real magnetic and lattice deformation gauge fields have been investigated in honeycomb lattice of graphene. The coexistence of these two gauges will induce a gap difference between two valley points ($K$ and $K'$) of system. This gap difference allows us to study the possible topological valley Hall current and valley polarization in the graphene sheet. In the absence of magnetic field, the strain alone could not generate a valley polarization when the Fermi energy coincides exactly with the Dirac points. Since in this case there is not any imbalance between the population of the valley points…
Heavy fermion systems represent a prototypical setting to study magnetic quantum phase transitions. A particular focus has been on the physics of Kondo destruction, which captures quantum criticality beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In this context, we study the spin one-half Kondo-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice at half filling. The problem is approached from the Kondo destroyed, antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase. We describe the local moments in terms of a coarse grained quantum non-linear sigma model, and show that the skyrmion defects of the…
We study the low-frequency properties of the bulk photovoltaic effect in topological semimetals. The bulk photovoltaic effect is a nonlinear optical effect that generates DC photocurrents under uniform irradiation, allowed by noncentrosymmetry. It is a promising mechanism for a terahertz photodetection based on topological semimetals. Here, we systematically investigate the low-frequency behavior of the second-order optical conductivity in point-node semimetals. Through symmetry and power-counting analysis, we show that Dirac and Weyl points with tilted cones show the leading low-frequency div…
We have laid out the results of a rigorous theoretical investigation into the response of electron dressed states, i.e., interacting Floquet states arising from the off-resonant coupling of Dirac spin-1 electrons in the $α$-$T_3$ model, to external radiation with various polarizations. Specifically, we have examined the role played by the parameter $α$ that is a measure of the coupling strength with the additional atom at the center of the honeycomb graphene lattice and which, when varied, continuously gives a different Berry phase. We have found that the electronic properties of the $α$ -$T_3…

Under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the electronic ground state evolves adiabatically and can accumulate geometrical phases characterized by the molecular Berry curvature. In this work, we study the effect of the molecular Berry curvature on the lattice dynamics in a system with broken time-reversal symmetry. The molecular Berry curvature is formulated based on the single-particle electronic Bloch states. It manifests as a non-local effective magnetic field in the equations of motion of the ions that are beyond the widely adopted Raman spin-lattice coupling model. We employ the Bogoliubo…
Based on an optical analogy of spintronics, the generation of optical tornadoes is theoretically investigated in two-dimensional photonic crystals without space-inversion symmetry. We address its close relation to the Berry curvature in crystal momentum space, which represents the non-trivial geometric property of a Bloch state. It is shown that the Berry curvature is easily controlled by tuning two types of dielectric rods in a honeycomb photonic crystal. Then, Bloch states with large Berry curvatures appear as optical tornadoes in real space. The radiation force of such a configuration is an…
Superconductivity in graphene-based systems has recently attracted much attention, as either intrinsic behavior or induced by proximity to a superconductor may lead to interesting topological phases and symmetries of the pairing function. A prominent system considers the pairing to have chiral symmetry. The question arises as to the effect of possible spin-orbit coupling on the resulting superconducting quasiparticle spectrum. Utilizing a Bogolyubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian, we explore the interplay of different interaction terms in the system, and their role in generating complex Berry cur…
We propose a protocol to locally detect the Berry curvature of a three terminal Josephson junction with a quantum dot based on a synchronic detection when an AC modulation is applied in the device. This local gauge invariant quantity is expressed in terms of the instantaneous Green function of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We analyze the contribution to the Berry curvature from both the quasi-particle excitations and the Andreev bound state levels by introducing an effective low-energy model. In addition, we propose to induce topological properties in the junction by breaking time-reve…
We study geometrical responses of magnons driven by a temperature gradient in frustrated spin systems. While Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions are usually incorporated to obtain geometrically nontrivial magnon bands, here we investigate thermal Hall responses of magnons that do no rely on the DM interactions. Specifically, we focus on frustrated spin systems with sublattice degrees of freedom and show that a nonzero Berry curvature requires breaking of an effective $PT$ symmetry. According to this symmetry consideration, we study the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_2^\prime$ Heisenberg models on a honeyc…
Higher-order topological insulators have attracted considerable interests as a novel topological phase of matter, where topologically non-trivial nature of bulk protects boundary states whose co-dimension is larger than one. It has been revealed that the alternating pattern of hopping amplitudes in two-dimensional lattices provides a promising route to realization of the higher-order topological insulators. In this paper, we propose that a honeycomb-lattice model with anti-Kekulé distortion hosts a higher-order topological phase. Here, the term anti-Kekulé distortion means that the pattern of …
We consider a tight-binding model on the honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field. For special values of the hopping integrals, the dispersion relation is linear in one direction and quadratic in the other. We find that, in this case, the energy of the Landau levels varies with the field B as E_n(B) ~ [(n+γ)B]^{2/3}. This result is obtained from the low-field study of the tight-binding spectrum on the honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field (Hofstadter spectrum) as well as from a calculation in the continuum approximation at low field. The latter links the new spectrum to the one of a modified quar…
We predict that a temperature gradient can induce a magnon-mediated spin Hall response in an antiferromagnet with non-trivial magnon Berry curvature. We develop a linear response theory which gives a general condition for a Hall current to be well defined, even when the thermal Hall response is forbidden by symmetry. We apply our theory to a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet and discuss a role of magnon edge states in a finite geometry.
We consider a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of metallic nanoparticles, each supporting a localized surface plasmon, and study the quantum properties of the collective plasmons resulting from the near field dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles. We analytically investigate the dispersion, the effective Hamiltonian and the eigenstates of the collective plasmons for an arbitrary orientation of the individual dipole moments. When the polarization points close to the normal to the plane the spectrum presents Dirac cones, similar to those present in the electronic band structure of graph…
Artificial lattices have served as a platform to study the physics of unconventional superconductivity. We study semiconductor artificial graphene -- a honeycomb superlattice imposed on a semiconductor heterostructure -- which hosts the Dirac physics of graphene but with a tunable periodic potential strength and lattice spacing, allowing control of the strength of the electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate a new mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions which requires a strong lattice potential and a minimum doping away from the Dirac points. The mechanism relies on…
The valley Chern-effect is theoretically demonstrated with a novel alternating current circuitry, where closed-loop LC-resonators sitting at the nodes of a honeycomb lattice are inductively coupled along the bonds. This enables us to generate a dynamical matrix which copies identically the Hamiltonian driving the electrons in graphene. The valley-Chern effect is generated by splitting the inversion symmetry of the lattice. After a detailed study of the Berry curvature landscape and of the localization of the interface modes, we derive an optimal configuration of the circuit. Furthermore, we sh…
We theoretically study magnon-phonon hybrid excitations (magnon-polarons) in two-dimensional antiferromagnets on a honeycomb lattice. With an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) allowed from mirror symmetry breaking from phonons, we find non-trivial Berry curvature around the anti-crossing rings among magnon and both optical and acoustic phonon bands, which gives rise to finite Chern numbers. We show that the Chern numbers of the magnon-polaron bands can be manipulated by changing the magnetic field direction or strength. We evaluate the thermal Hall conductivity reflecting the no…
We study theoretically "graphene-like" plasmonic metamaterials constituted by two-dimensional arrays of metallic nanoparticles, including perfect honeycomb structures with and without inversion symmetry, as well as generic bipartite lattices. The dipolar interactions between localised surface plasmons in different nanoparticles gives rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole lattice. We study the band structure of collective plasmons and unveil its tunability with the orientation of the dipole moments associated with the localised surface plasmons. Depending on the dipole orientat…
We design an ingenious scheme to realize the Haldane's quantum Hall model without Landau level by using ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice. Three standing-wave laser beams are used to construct a wanted honeycomb lattice, where different on-site energies in two sublattices required in the Haldane's model can be implemented through tuning the phase of one of the laser beams. The staggered magnetic field is generated from the Berry phase associated with the atom moving in a region with other three standing-wave laser beams. Moreover, we establish a relation between the Hall conductivi…
We find that quantum spin Hall (QSH) state can be obtained on a square-like or rectangular lattice, which is generalized from two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) haeckelites. Band inversion is shown to be controled by hopping parameters and results in Dirac cones with opposite or same vorticity when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is not considered. Effective k$\cdot$p model has been constructed to show the merging or annihilation of these Dirac cones, supplemented with the intuitive pseudospin texture. Similar to graphene based honeycomb lattice system, the QSH insulator is d…

We propose that a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) can be realized in a nanopatterned two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with a small in-plane magnetic field and a high carrier density. The Berry curvatures originating from the in-plane magnetic field and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, in combination with a nanoscale honeycomb lattice potential modulation, lead to topologically nontrivial insulating states in the 2DEG without Landau levels. In the bulk insulating gaps, the anomalous Hall conductivity is quantized $-e^{2}/h$, corresponding to a finite Chern number -1. There…
A monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) such as WSe$_2$ is a two-dimensional (2D) direct band-gap valley-semiconductor having an effective Honeycomb lattice structure with broken inversion symmetry. The inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone could be selectively addressed using circularly-polarized light fields, suggesting the possibility for magneto-optical measurement and manipulation of the valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here we report such experiments that demonstrate the valley Zeeman effect -- strongly anisotropic lifting of the degeneracy of the valley pseudospi…
The experimental realization of lattices with Chern bands in ultracold-atom and photonic systems has motivated the study of time-dependent phenomena, such as spatial propagation, in lattices with nontrivial topology. We study the dynamics of gaussian wavepackets on the Haldane honeycomb Chern-band lattice model, in the presence of a harmonic trap. We focus on the transverse response to a force, which is due partly to the Berry curvature and partly to the transverse component of the energy band curvature. We evaluate the accuracy of a semiclassical description, which treats the wavepacket as a …
Focusing on the recently-discovered candidate topological insulator $α$-(BEDT-TSeF)$_2$I$_3$ -- having two-dimensional charge-neutral Dirac cones in a low symmetry lattice -- we combine ab-initio and extended-Hubbard model calculations to deal with spin-orbit and non-local repulsive interactions, and find a realization of an interaction-induced quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, similar to the one proposed in the honeycomb lattice under next-nearest neighbor repulsions. In the absence of repulsive interactions, a topological insulator appears by the spin-orbit coupling and is characterized by …
We theoretically study the intrinsic thermal Hall and spin Nernst effect in collinear ferrimagnets on a honeycomb lattice with broken inversion symmetry. The broken inversion symmetry allows in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the nearest neighbors, which does not affect the magnon spectrum in the linear spin wave theory. However, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can induce large Berry curvature in the magnetoelastic excitation spectrum through the magnon-phonon interaction to produce thermal Hall current. Furthermore, we find that the magnetoelastic excitations transport s…
