We report the first large-scale statistical study of very high-lying eigenmodes (quantum states) of the mushroom billiard proposed by L. Bunimovich in this journal, vol. 11, 802 (2001). The phase space of this mixed system is unusual in that it has a single regular region and a single chaotic region, and no KAM hierarchy. We verify Percival's conjecture to high accuracy (1.7%). We propose a model for dynamical tunneling and show that it predicts well the chaotic components of predominantly-regular modes. Nonperiodic echoes from mushroom billiard hats

Mushroom billiards have the remarkable property to show one or more clear cut integrable islands in one or several chaotic seas, without any fractal boundaries. The islands correspond to orbits confined to the hats of the mushrooms, which they share with the chaotic orbits. It is thus interesting to ask how long a chaotic orbit will remain in the hat before returning to the stem. Prevalence of marginally unstable periodic orbits in chaotic billiards

The dynamics of chaotic billiards is significantly influenced by coexisting regions of regular motion. Here we investigate the prevalence of a different fundamental structure, which is formed by marginally unstable periodic orbits and stands apart from the regular regions. We show that these structures both {\it exist} and {\it strongly influence} the dynamics of locally perturbed billiards, which include a large class of widely studied systems. We demonstrate the impact of these structures in the quantum regime using microwave experiments in annular billiards.

How Chaotic is the Stadium Billiard? A Semiclassical Analysis

The impression gained from the literature published to date is that the spectrum of the stadium billiard can be adequately described, semiclassically, by the Gutzwiller periodic orbit trace formula together with a modified treatment of the marginally stable family of bouncing ball orbits. Quantal Consequences of Perturbations Which Destroy Structurally Unstable Orbits in Chaotic Billiards

Non-generic contributions to the quantal level-density from parallel segments in billiards are investigated. These contributions are due to the existence of marginally stable families of periodic orbits, which are structurally unstable, in the sense that small perturbations, such as a slight tilt of one of the segments, destroy them completely. We investigate the effects of such perturbation on the corresponding quantum spectra, and demonstrate them for the stadium billiard.

Quantizing Billiards with Arbitrary Trajectories

The structure of the semiclassical trace formula can be used to construct a quasi-classical evolution operator whose spectrum has a one-to-one correspondence with the semiclassical quantum spectrum. We illustrate this for marginally unstable integrable and non-integrable billiards and demonstrate its utility by quantizing them using arbitrary non-periodic trajectories.

Stable and unstable regimes in higher-dimensional convex billiards with cylindrical shape

We introduce a class of convex, higher-dimensional billiard models which generalise stadium billiards. These models correspond to the free motion of a point-particle in a region bounded by cylinders cut by planes. They are motivated by models of particles interacting via a string-type mechanism, and confined by hard walls. The combination of these elements may give rise to a defocusing mechanism, similar to that in two dimensions, which allows large chaotic regions in phase space. Bouncing ball orbits and symmetry breaking effects in a three-dimensional chaotic billiard

We study the classical and quantum mechanics of a three-dimensional stadium billiard. It consists of two quarter cylinders that are rotated with respect to each other by 90 degrees, and it is classically chaotic. The billiard exhibits only a few families of nongeneric periodic orbits. Approach to ergodicity in quantum wave functions

According to theorems of Shnirelman and followers, in the semiclassical limit the quantum wavefunctions of classically ergodic systems tend to the microcanonical density on the energy shell. We here develop a semiclassical theory that relates the rate of approach to the decay of certain classical fluctuations.
