We review our recent study of the pion mass dependence of the rho and sigma resonances generated from one-loop SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) with the Inverse Amplitude Method (IAM) which was modified to properly account for the Adler zero. The method is based on analyticity, elastic unitarity and ChPT at low energies, thus yielding the pion mass dependence of the resonance pole positions from the ChPT series up to a given order. We find that the rho-pi-pi coupling constant is almost m_pi independent and that our prediction compare well with some recent lattice results for the rho mass. These findings may be relevant for studies of the meson spectrum and form factors on the lattice.
We examine the chiral corrections to exotic meson masses calculated in lattice QCD. In particular, we ask whether the non-linear chiral behavior at small quark masses, which has been found in other hadronic systems, could lead to large corrections to the predictions of exotic meson masses based on linear extrapolations to the chiral limit. We find that our present understanding of exotic meson decay dynamics suggests that open channels may not make a significant contribution to such non-linearities whereas the virtual, closed channels may be important.
The extrapolation of nucleon magnetic form factors calculated within lattice QCD is investigated within a framework based upon heavy baryon chiral effective-field theory. All one-loop graphs are considered at arbitrary momentum transfer and all octet and decuplet baryons are included in the intermediate states. Finite range regularisation is applied to improve the convergence in the quark-mass expansion. At each value of the momentum transfer ($Q^2$), a separate extrapolation to the physical pion mass is carried out as a function of $m_π$ alone. Because of the large values of $Q^2$ involved, t…
We calculate the pion-pion elastic scattering phase shifts for pion masses from the chiral limit to values of interest for lattice studies. At low energies, we use the standard Chiral Perturbation Theory expressions to one and two loops. In addition, we study the phase shifts mass dependence in the resonance region by means of dispersion theory in the form of unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Inverse Amplitude Method. We pay particular attention to the case when resonances are close to threshold, illustrating the different behavior between scalar and vector resonances. We also prov…
The masses of heavy baryons containing a b quark have been calculated numerically in lattice QCD with pion masses which are much larger than its physical value. In the present work we extrapolate these lattice data to the physical mass of the pion by applying the effective chiral Lagrangian for heavy baryons, which is invariant under chiral symmetry when the light quark masses go to zero and heavy quark symmetry when the heavy quark masses go to infinity. A phenomenological functional form with three parameters, which has the correct behavior in the chiral limit and appropriate behavior when t…
Hyperfine splittings between the heavy vector (D*, B*) and pseudoscalar (D, B) mesons have been calculated numerically in lattice QCD, where the pion mass (which is related to the light quark mass) is much larger than its physical value. Naive linear chiral extrapolations of the lattice data to the physical mass of the pion lead to hyperfine splittings which are smaller than experimental data. In order to extrapolate these lattice data to the physical mass of the pion more reasonably, we apply the effective chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons, which is invariant under chiral symmetry w…
The charge radii of octet-baryons obtained in quenched lattice-QCD calculations are extrapolated within heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Finite-range regularization (FRR) is applied to improve the convergence of the chiral expansion and to provide estimates of quenching artifacts. Lattice values of quark distribution radii and baryon charge radii for $\mpi^2$ in the range (0.1, 0.7)$\gev^2$ are described very well with FRR. Upon estimating corrections for both finite-volume and quenching effects, the obtained charge radii of the proton, neutron and $Σ^-$ are in good agreement with expe…
The B-meson decay constant fB has been calculated from unquenched lattice QCD in the unphysical region. For extrapolating the lattice data to the physical region, we propose a phenomenological functional form based on the effective chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons, which respects both the heavy quark symmetry and the chiral symmetry, and the non-relativistic constituent quark model which is valid at large pion masses. The inclusion of pion loop corrections leads to nonanalytic contributions to fB when the pion mass is small. The finite-range regularization technique is employed for …
We review our recent study of the pion mass dependence of the rho and sigma resonances, generated from one-loop SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) with the Inverse Amplitude Method (IAM). In order to properly account for the Adler zero region, we also review the recently obtained modified version of the IAM; which is based on analyticity, elastic unitarity and ChPT at low energies, thus yielding the correct pion mass dependence of the resonance pole positions up to next-to-leading order in ChPT. As main results we find that the rho-pi-pi coupling constant is almost pion mass independent a…
Nucleon magnetic moments display a rich nonanalytic dependence on the quark mass in both quenched and full QCD. They provide a forum for a detailed examination of the connection between quenched and full QCD made possible through the formalism of finite-range regularised chiral effective field theory. By defining meson-cloud and core contributions through the careful selection of a regularisation scale, one can correct the meson cloud of quenched QCD to make full QCD predictions. Whereas past success is based on unquenching the leading-order loop contributions, here we extend and test the form…
The extrapolation of nucleon axial charge $g_A$ is investigated within the framework of heavy baryon chiral effective field theory. The intermediate octet and decuplet baryons are included in the one loop calculation. Finite range regularization is applied to improve the convergence in the quark-mass expansion. The lattice data from three different groups are used for the extrapolation. At physical pion mass, the extrapolated $g_A$ are all smaller than the experimental value.
The relationship of the quark model to the known chiral properties of QCD is a longstanding problem in the interpretation of low energy QCD. In particular, how can the pion be viewed as both a collective Goldstone boson quasiparticle and as a valence quark antiquark bound state where universal hyperfine interactions govern spin splittings in the same way as in the heavy quark systems. We address this issue in a simplified model which; however, reproduces all features of QCD relevant to this problem. A comparison of the many-body solution to our model and the constituent quark model demonstrate…
We propose analytic approximations of chiral SU(3) amplitudes for the extrapolation of lattice data to the physical meson masses. The method allows the determination of NNLO low-energy constants in a controllable fashion. We test the approach with recent lattice data for the ratio F_K/F_pi of meson decay constants.
Within the framework of two-flavor covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory we have expressed the Chernyak-Zhitnitsky, Ioffe and Dosch currents in terms of chiral fields to provide leading one-loop extrapolation formulae for the leading and next-to-leading twist normalization constants $f_N$, $λ_1$ and $λ_2$. Finite volume effects due to pion loops have been taken into account. The occurring low energy constants are fitted to data obtained from recent lattice QCD simulations in order to extract the values at the physical point.
Approximations of chiral SU(3) amplitudes at NNLO are proposed to facilitate the extrapolation of lattice data to the physical meson masses. Inclusion of NNLO terms is essential for investigating convergence properties of chiral SU(3) and for determining low-energy constants in a controllable fashion. The approximations are tested with recent lattice data for the ratio of decay constants F_K/F_pi.
We have analyzed the chiral expansion of the baryon masses to second order in the quark masses, including strong isospin violation. The calculations are performed in Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. Chiral extrapolation functions for three-flavor unquenched lattice simulations are derived. The matching to the two-flavor case and the sigma terms are also considered.
We perform a chiral extrapolation of lattice data on the scalar K pi form factor and the ratio of the kaon and pion decay constants within Chiral Perturbation Theory to two loops. We determine the value of the scalar form factor at zero momentum transfer, at the Callan-Treiman point and at its soft kaon analog as well as its slope. Results are in good agreement with their determination from experiment using the standard couplings of quarks to the W boson. The slope is however rather large. A study of the convergence of the chiral expansion is also performed.
We analyze lattice data for octet baryon masses from the QCDSF collaboration employing manifestly covariant Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. It is shown that certain combinations of low-energy constants can be fixed more accurately than before from this data. We also examine the impact of this analysis on the pion-nucleon sigma term, and on the convergence properties of baryon mass expansions in the SU(3) symmetry limit.
We study the pion mass dependence of the rho(770) and f_0(600) masses and widths from one and two-loop unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show the consistency of one-loop calculations with lattice results for the M_rho, f_pi and the isospin 2 scattering length a_20.Then, we develop and apply the modified Inverse Amplitude Method formalism for two-loop ChPT. In contrast to the f_0(600), the rho(770) is rather sensitive to the two-loop ChPT parameters --our main source of systematic uncertainty. We thus provide two-loop unitarized fits constrained by lattice information on M_rho, f_pi, by…
A lattice computation of the leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can potentially help reduce the error on the Standard Model prediction for this quantity, if sufficient control of all systematic errors affecting such a computation can be achieved. One of these systematic errors is that associated with the extrapolation to the physical pion mass from values on the lattice larger than the physical pion mass. We investigate this extrapolation assuming lattice pion masses in the range of 200 to 400MeV with the help of two-loop chiral perturbation theory, and f…
We calculate the baryon octet masses to fourth order in chiral perturbation theory employing dimensional and cut-off regularization. We analyze the pion and kaon mass dependences of the baryon masses based on the MILC data. We show that chiral perturbation theory gives stable chiral extrapolation functions for pion (kaon) masses below 550 (600) MeV. The pion-nucleon sigma term in SU(3) is also investigated, we find σ_{πN} (0) = 50.7 - 53.7 MeV.
We draw an analogy between the chiral extrapolation of lattice QCD calculations from large to small quark masses and the interpolation between the large mass (weak field) and small mass (strong field) limits of the Euler--Heisenberg QED effective action. In the latter case, where the exact answer is known, a simple extrapolation of a form analogous to those proposed for the QCD applications is shown to be surprisingly accurate over the entire parameter range.
In current lattice simulations of nucleon properties, the up and down quark masses are significantly larger than their physical values, while the strange quark can be included in simulations with its physical mass. When the up and down quark masses are much smaller than the strange-quark mass the chiral extrapolation of strange-quark matrix elements in the nucleon from the lattice up and down quark masses to their physical values can be performed with two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, thereby avoiding the slow convergence problem of the three-flavor chiral expansion. We explore the chiral…
Proton Compton scattering is analyzed with the chiral Lagrangian. Partial-wave amplitudes are obtained by an analytic extrapolation of subthreshold reaction amplitudes computed in chiral perturbation theory, where the constraints set by electromagnetic-gauge invariance, causality and unitarity are used to stabilize the extrapolation. We present and discuss predictions for various spin observables and polarizabilties of the proton. While for the transition polarizabilities $γ_{E1M2}, γ_{M1E2}$ we recover the results of strict chiral perturbation theory, for the diagonal $γ_{E1E1}, γ_{M1M1}$ ele…
We investigate the chiral extrapolation of the lattice data for the light-heavy meson hyperfine splittings D^*-D and B^*-B to the physical region for the light quark mass. The chiral loop corrections providing non-analytic behavior in m_πare consistent with chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons. Since chiral loop corrections tend to decrease the already too low splittings obtained from linear extrapolation, we investigate two models to guide the form of the analytic background behavior: the constituent quark potential model, and the covariant model of QCD based on the ladder-rainbow trun…
In this review I discuss the role of chiral extrapolations for the determination of several phenomenologically relevant quantities, including light quark masses, meson decay constants and the axial charge of the nucleon. In particular, I investigate whether chiral extrapolations are sufficiently controlled in order to rightfully claim the accuracy which is quoted in recent compilations of these quantities. While this is the case for the masses of the light quarks and the ratio fK/fpi of decay constants, small inconsistencies in the chiral and continuum behaviour of individual decay constants f…

The hyperon vector form factors at zero momentum transfer, $f_1(0)$, play an important role in a precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{us}$. Recent studies based on lattice chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations and covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory yield contradicting results. In this work, we study chiral extrapolation of and finite-volume corrections to the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD simulations. Our results show that finite-volume corrections are relatively small and can be safely ignored at the present LQCD setup of $m_πL=4.6$ but chiral extrapolation n…
We present a determination, from lattice QCD, of charge symmetry violation in the spin- independent and spin-dependent parton distribution functions of the nucleon. This is done by chirally extrapolating recent QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice simulations of the first several Mellin moments of the parton distribution functions of octet baryons to the physical point. We find small chiral corrections for the polarized moments, while the corrections are quantitatively significant in the unpolarized case.
Both scalar and vector light resonances can be generated from the unitarization of one-loop chiral perturbation theory. This amounts to using in a dispersion relation the chiral expansion, which incorporates the correct QCD quark mass dependence. We can thus predict the quark mass dependence of the poles associated to those light resonances. Our results compare well with some recent lattice results for the rho(770) mass and can be used as a benchmark for future lattice results on the rho(770) or the f0(600) also known as the sigma.
We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Padé approximant which builds in both the limits $m_π\to 0$ and $m_π\to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, …
Chiral effective field theory can provide valuable insight into the chiral physics of hadrons when used in conjunction with non-perturbative schemes such as lattice QCD. In this discourse, the attention is focused on extrapolating the mass of the rho meson to the physical pion mass in quenched QCD (QQCD). With the absence of a known experimental value, this serves to demonstrate the ability of the extrapolation scheme to make predictions without prior bias. By using extended effective field theory developed previously, an extrapolation is performed using quenched lattice QCD data that extends …
Pion-nucleon scattering, pion photoproduction, and nucleon Compton scattering are analyzed within a scheme based on the chiral Lagrangian. Partial-wave amplitudes are obtained by an analytic extrapolation of subthreshold reaction amplitudes computed in chiral perturbation theory, where the constraints set by electromagnetic-gauge invariance, causality and unitarity are used to stabilize the extrapolation. Experimental data are reproduced up to energies $\sqrt{s}\simeq 1300$ MeV in terms of the parameters relevant at order $Q^3$. A striking puzzle caused by an old photon asymmetry measurement c…
Since the strange quark has a light mass of order Lambda_QCD, fluctuations of sea s-s bar pairs may play a special role in the low-energy dynamics of QCD by inducing significantly different patterns of chiral symmetry breaking in the chiral limits N_f=2 (m_u=m_d=0, m_s physical) and N_f=3 (m_u=m_d=m_s=0). This effect of vacuum fluctuations of s-s bar pairs is related to the violation of the Zweig rule in the scalar sector, described through the two O(p^4) low-energy constants L_4 and L_6 of the three-flavour strong chiral lagrangian. In the case of significant vacuum fluctuations, three-flavou…
A chiral extrapolation of the light vector meson masses in the up, down and strange quark masses of QCD is presented. We apply an effective chiral Lagrangian based on the hadrogenesis conjecture to QCD lattice ensembles of PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD and HSC in the strict isospin limit. The leading orders low-energy constants are determined upon a global fit to the lattice data set. We use the pion and kaon masses as well as the size of the finite volume as lattice ensemble parameters only. The quark mass ratio on the various ensembles are then predicted in terms of our set of low-energy constants. A…
We present a new study of SU(3)-breaking corrections in hyperon vector form factors relevant for the extraction of Vus. A lattice quenched simulation has been performed, showing that it is possible to reach the required precision to extract SU(3)-breaking corrections in the regime of simulated masses. In order to perform the chiral extrapolation we calculated the chiral corrections to the vector form factor in HBChPT. Besides the one-loop O(p^2) contribution, we included also the subleading O(p^3) and O(1/M_B) corrections that, due to the Ademollo-Gatto theorem, are free from the contamination…
Hadron masses show a specific dependence on the quark masses. Therefore, the variation of these masses can cause a resonance in a hadronic scattering amplitude to become a bound state. Consequently, the amplitude exhibits a non-analytic behavior at this transition. Crossed amplitudes, where the resonance can be exchanged in the t-channel, can be shown to exhibit the same phenomenon by s-->t analytic continuation. This entails possible kinks in lattice quark mass extrapolations needed to compute hadronic observables.
We present the resolution of a long-standing discrepancy between the moments of parton distributions calculated from lattice QCD and their experimental values. We propose a simple extrapolation formula for the moments of the nonsinglet quark distribution u-d, as a function of quark mass, which embodies the general constraints imposed by the chiral symmetry of QCD. The inclusion of the leading nonanalytic behavior leads to an excellent description of both the lattice data and the experimental values of the moments.
We calculate the pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors in finite volume for a generic momentum transfer in space-like region, using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. To this end, we first find the hadronic matrix element in a new form which is suitable for our calculation in finite volume. We present our numerical findings for the chiral behavior and finite volume corrections and compare these for pion and kaon form factors. As a result, for the pion electromagnetic form factor we find the finite volume correction $ΔF^π_{em} = 0.0041$ at momentum transfer $q^2 = -0.1358$ and for the kaon …
The Vector Pion form factor below 1 GeV is analyzed using experimental data on its modulus, the P-wave pion pion phase shifts and dispersion relation. It is found that causality is satisfied. Using dispersion relation, terms proportional to s squared and s cubed are calculated using the experimental data, where s is the momentum transfer. They are much larger than the one-loop and two-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory calculations. Unitarized model calculations agree very well with dispersion relation results.
We report a new analysis of lattice simulation results for octet baryon masses in 2+1-flavor QCD, with an emphasis on a precise determination of the strangeness nucleon sigma term. A controlled chiral extrapolation of a recent PACS-CS Collaboration data set yields baryon masses which exhibit remarkable agreement both with experimental values at the physical point and with the results of independent lattice QCD simulations at unphysical meson masses. Using the Feynman-Hellmann relation, we evaluate sigma commutators for all octet baryons. The small statistical uncertainty, and considerably smal…
I describe the methodology for the use of dispersion relations in connection with chiral perturbation theory. The conditions for matching the two formalisms are given at $O(E^2)$ and $O(E^4)$. The two have several complementary features, as well as some limitations, and these are described by the use of examples, which include chiral sum rules related to the Weinberg sum rules, form factors, and a more complicated reaction, $γγ\rightarrow ππ$. (Invited talk presented at the International Workshop on Chiral Dynamics in Hadrons and Nuclei, Feb 6-10, 1995, Seoul, Korea)
We study the pion-mass dependence of the two-pion channel in the hadronic-vacuum-polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ^\text{HVP}$, by using an Omnès representation for the pion vector form factor with the phase shift derived from the inverse-amplitude method (IAM). Our results constrain the dominant isospin-$1$ part of the isospin-symmetric light-quark contribution, and should thus allow one to better control the chiral extrapolation of $a_μ^\text{HVP}$, required for lattice-QCD calculations performed at larger-than-physical pion masses. In particul…
We establish the framework for the comparison of $πK$ scattering amplitudes from SU(3) chiral perturbation theory with suitable dispersive representations which result from the combination of certain fixed-t dispersion relations with dispersion relations on hyperbolic curves. This allows for predictions for some combinations of low energy constants appearing in higher order calculations of chiral perturbation theory. Using a simple parametrization for the lowest partial waves, first estimates for some combinations are presented.
We study the properties of the B-->pi and B-->K transition form factors in partially quenched QCD by using the approach of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory combined with the static heavy quark limit. We show that the form factors change almost linearly when varying the value of the sea quark mass, whereas the dependence on the valence quark mass contains both the standard and chirally divergent (quenched) logarithms. A simple strategy for the chiral extrapolations in the lattice studies with Nsea=2 is suggested. It consists of the linear extrapolations from the realistically acces…
We present formulae for the chiral extrapolation of spin-dependent and spin-independent moments of quark distributions of octet baryons, including loop corrections and counterterms to leading non-analytic order. This analysis allows for isospin breaking, and may be used for the chiral extrapolation of both (2+1)- and (1+1+1)-flavor lattice QCD results. An example of such an application is given, with the extrapolation formulae applied to recent (2 + 1)-flavor QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice results for the first spin-independent and first two spin-dependent Mellin moments.
We consider the chiral Lagrangian for charmed baryon fields with $J^P =\frac{1}{2}^+$ or $J^P =\frac{3}{2}^+$ quantum numbers. A chiral expansion framework for the baryon ground state masses is worked out to N$^3$LO as to compute their dependence on the up, down and strange quark masses for finite box QCD lattice simulations. It is formulated in terms of on-shell meson and baryon masses. The convergence of such a scheme is illustrated with physical masses as taken from the PDG. The counter terms relevant at N$^3$LO are correlated systematically by large-$N_c$ sum rules to leading and subleadin…
We calculate the nucleon and the delta mass to fourth order in a covariant formulation of the small scale expansion. We analyze lattice data from the MILC collaboration and demonstrate that the available lattice data combined with our knowledge of the physical values for the nucleon and delta masses lead to consistent chiral extrapolation functions for both observables up to fairly large pion masses. This holds in particular for very recent data on the delta mass from the QCDSF collaboration. The resulting pion-nucleon sigma term is sigma_{piN} = 48.9 MeV. This first quantitative analysis of t…
We present a 2+1--flavor lattice QCD calculation of the electromagnetic Dirac and Pauli form factors of the octet baryons. The magnetic Sachs form factor is extrapolated at six fixed values of $Q^2$ to the physical pseudoscalar masses and infinite volume using a formulation based on heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with finite-range regularization. We properly account for omitted disconnected quark contractions using a partially-quenched effective field theory formalism. The results compare well with the experimental form factors of the nucleon and the magnetic moments of the octet bary…
The extraction of two- and three-body hadronic scattering amplitudes and the properties of the low-lying hadronic resonances from the finite-volume energy levels in lattice QCD represents a rapidly developing field of research. The use of various modifications of the Lüscher finite-volume method has opened a path to calculate infinite-volume scattering amplitudes on the lattice. Many new results have been obtained recently for different two- and three-body scattering processes, including the extraction of resonance poles and their properties from lattice data. Such studies, however, require ro…
In this paper we present chiral extrapolation formulas for the generalized form factors connected to the first moments of chiral-even generalized parton distributions. For the description of QCD at low energies we employ the framework of two-flavor covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at full one-loop accuracy. Our results are well suited for the extrapolation of lattice QCD data to physical quark masses.
We study the quark mass expansion of the magnetic moments of the nucleon in a chiral effective field theory including nucleons, pions and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We point out that the usual powercounting applied so far to this problem misses important quark mass structures generated via an intermediate isovector M1 nucleon-delta transition. We propose a modified powercounting and compare the resulting chiral extrapolation function to available (quenched) lattice data. The extrapolation is found to work surprisingly well, given that the lattice data result from rather l…
We carry out a series of studies on pion and photon productions in neutrino/electron/photon--nucleus scatterings. The low energy region is investigated by using a chiral effective field theory for nuclei. The results for the neutral current induced photon production ($γ$-NCP) are then extrapolated to neutrino energy $E_ν\sim$ GeV region. By convoluting the cross sections with MiniBooNE's beam spectrum and detection efficiency, we estimate its $γ$-NCP, event number, and conclude that such photon production can not fully explain its low energy event excess in both neutrino and antineutrino runs.
We extend the chiral Lagrangian with heavy quark-diquark symmetry to quenched and partially quenched theories. These theories are used to derive formulae for the chiral extrapolation of masses and hyperfine splittings of doubly heavy baryons in lattice QCD simulations. A quark-diquark symmetry prediction for the hyperfine splittings of heavy mesons and doubly heavy baryons is rather insensitive to chiral corrections in both quenched and partially quenched QCD. Extrapolation formulae for the doubly heavy baryon electromagnetic transition moments are also determined for the partially quenched th…
By far the biggest contribution to hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) arises from the two-pion channel. Its quark-mass dependence can be evaluated by combining dispersion relations with chiral perturbation theory, providing guidance on the functional form of chiral extrapolations, or even interpolations around the physical point. In addition, the approach allows one to estimate in a controlled way the isospin-breaking (IB) corrections that arise from the pion mass difference. As an application, we present an updated estimate of phenomenological expectations for electromagnetic and strong IB co…
We perform an analysis of QCD lattice data on masses of charmed meson with J^P = 0^- and J^P =1^- quantum numbers. The quark-mass dependence of the data set is used to gain information on the size of counter terms in the chiral Lagrangian formulated with open-charm mesons. Of particular interest are those counter terms that are active in the exotic flavour sextet channel. A chiral expansion scheme is developed and applied to the lattice data set. An accurate reproduction of the lattice data based on ensembles of PACS-CS, MILC, ETMC and HSC with pion and kaon masses smaller than 600 MeV is achi…
We use both old and new theoretical developments in QCD dispersion relation constraints on the scalar form factor in the decay K --> πl ν_l to obtain constraints on the strange quark mass. The perturbative QCD side of the calculation incorporates up to four-loop corrections, while the hadronic side uses a recently developed parameterization constructed explicitly to satisfy the dispersive constraints. Using chiral perturbation theory (\chiPT) as a model for soon-to-be measured data, we find a series of lower bounds on m_s increasing with the accuracy to which one believes \chiPT to represent t…
We consider the dependence of the pion and kaon decay constants on the up, down and strange quark masses in QCD with strict isospin symmetry. The role of dynamical vector meson degrees of freedom is scrutinized in terms of an effective chiral Lagrangian for vector mesons. Applying a set of low-energy parameters as determined previously from QCD lattice data on the masses of the light vector mesons from PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD and HSC we compute its implications on the pion and kaon decay constants for QCD lattice ensembles of HPQCD, CLS and ETMC. It is shown that with Gasser-Leutwyler L_4 and L_5…
Chiral perturbation theory, the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions for the light pseudoscalar degrees of freedom, is based on effective Lagrangian techniques and is an expansion in the powers of the external momenta and the powers of the quark masses, which correct the soft-pion theorems. Our primary emphasis will be on the problem of $ππ$ scattering. After briefly reviewing these features and some results, we review some features of $π-N$ scattering.
We present a novel treatment for calculating the in-medium quark condensates. The advantage of this approach is that one does not need to make further assumptions on the derivatives of model parameters with respect to the quark current mass. The normally accepted model-independent result in nuclear matter is naturally reproduced. The change of the quark condensate induced by interactions depends on the incompressibility of nuclear matter. When it is greater than 260 MeV, the density at which the condensate vanishes is higher than that from the linear extrapolation. For the chiral condensate in…
