We present a theoretical study of electron wave functions in ballistic circular n-p junctions of bilayer graphene. Similarly to the case of a circular n-p junction of monolayer graphene, we find that (i) the wave functions form caustics inside the circular region, and (ii) the shape of these caustics are well described by a geometrical optics model using the concept of a negative refractive index. In contrast to the monolayer case, we show that the strong focusing effect is absent in the bilayer. We explain these findings in terms of the angular dependence of Klein tunneling at a planar n-p junction.
We investigate the Josephson effect in a bilayer graphene flake contacted by two monolayer sheet deposited by superconducting electrodes. It is found that when the electrodes are attached to the different layers of the bilayer, the Josephson current is in a $π$ state when the bilayer region is undoped and in the absence of vertical bias. Applying doping or bias to the junction reveals $π-0$ transitions which can be controlled by varying the temperature and the junction length. The supercurrent reversal here is very different from the ferromagnetic Josephson junctions where the spin degree of f…
Graphene is a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications. In this report, a double gated bilayer graphene FET has been made using a combination of electrostatic and electrolytic gating in order to form an abrupt p-n junction. The presence of two Dirac peaks in the gating curve of the fabricated device confirms the formation of a p-n junction. At low temperatures, when the electrolyte is frozen intentionally, the photovoltage exhibits a six-fold pattern indicative of the hot electron induced photothermoelectric effect that has also been seen in graphene p-n junctions made using metalli…
We investigate the electron transport and thermoelectric property of twisted bilayer graphene nanoribbon junction (TBGNRJ) in $0^o$, $21.8^o$, $38.2^o$ and $60^o$ rotation angles by first principles calculation with Landauer-Buttiker and Boltzmann theories. It is found that TBGNRJs exhibit negative differential resistance (NDR) in $21.8^o$ and $38.2^o$ rotation angles under $\pm$ 0.2 V bias voltage. More importantly, three peak ZT values of 2.0, 2.7 and 6.1 can be achieved in the $21.8^o$ rotation angle at 300K. The outstanding ZT values of TBGNRJs are interpreted as the combination of the red…
The electronic properties of junctions defined electrostatically on twisted bilayer graphene can be addressed theoretically using lattice models. Recent works have introduced minimal local orbital models to describe twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle (MATBLG) with different degrees of approximation and accounting for fragile topology. In the present work we use a Green's function formalism to obtain the spectral and transport properties for MATBLG junctions based on these models. We introduce different symmetry breaking perturbations to simulate the effect of interactions and characte…
We explore the potential of bilayer graphene as a cryogenic microwave photodetector by studying the microwave absorption in fully suspended clean bilayer graphene pn junctions in the frequency range of $1-5$ GHz at a temperature of 8 K. We observe a distinct photocurrent signal if the device is gated into the pn regime, while there is almost no signal for unipolar doping in either the nn or pp regimes. Most surprisingly, the photocurrent strongly peaks when one side of the junction is gated to the Dirac point (charge-neutrality point CNP), while the other remains in a highly doped state. This …
We develop a general theory of the layer circular photogalvanic effect (LCPGE) in quasi two-dimensional chiral bilayers, which refers to the appearance of a polarization-dependent, out-of-plane dipole moment induced by circularly polarized light. We elucidate the geometric origin of the LCPGE as two types of interlayer coordinate shift weighted by the quantum metric tensor and the Berry curvature, respectively. As a concrete example, we calculate the LCPGE in twisted bilayer graphene, and find that it exhibits a resonance peak whose frequency can be tuned from visible to infrared as the twisti…
A graphene sheet partially covered with a bulk superconductor serves as a normal conductor--superconductor (NS) junction, in which electron transport is mainly governed by Andreev reflection (AR). As excess carriers induced over the covered region penetrate into the uncovered region over a screening length, the charge neutrality point (CNP) in the uncovered region shifts only near the NS interface. We theoretically study the electron transport in a bilayer graphene junction taking account of such spatial variation of the CNP in the electron-doped case. When the Fermi level is close to the CNP …
We report on realization and quantum transport study of a twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) Josephson junction device. High-quality tBLG employed in the device fabrication is obtained via chemical vapour deposition and the device is fabricated by contacting a piece of tBLG by two closely spaced Al electrodes in an Al-tBLG-Al Josephson junction configuration. Low-temperature transport measurements show that below the critical temperature of the Al electrodes ($T_c\approx1.1$ K), the device exhibits sizable supercurrents at zero magnetic field, arising from the superconducting proximity effect wit…
We investigate the thermoelectric performance of armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR), bilayer GNRs junction (BGNRJ) and BGNRJ with holes (BGNRJ-H) by the first principles calculation with non-equilibrium Green function. It is found that the BGNRJ-H exhibits high ZT values of 9.65 and 5.55 at 300K. The reason of these significantly larger ZT values than previously observed has been calculated due to reduced thermal conductivity and enhanced electrical conductivity. The low thermal conductance comes from the van der waals (vdW) interaction between two graphene layers. The increased electrical co…
We report on low-temperature transport study of a single layer graphene (SLG)-twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) junction device. The SLG-tBLG junction in the device is grown by chemical vapor deposition and the device is fabricated in a Hall-bar configuration on Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. The longitudinal resistances across the SLG-tBLG junction (cross-junction resistances) on the two sides of the Hall bar and the Hall resistances of SLG and tBLG in the device are measured. In the quantum Hall regime, the measurements show that the measured cross-junction resistances exhibit a series of new quantized…
Graphene matter in a strong magnetic field, realizing one-dimensional quantum Hall channels, provides a unique platform for studying electron interference. Here, using the Landauer-Büttiker formalism along with the tight-binding model, we investigate the quantum Hall (QH) effects in unipolar and bipolar monolayer-bilayer graphene (MLG-BLG) junctions. We find that a Hall bar made of an armchair MLG-BLG junction in the bipolar regime results in valley-polarized edge-channel interferences and can operate a fully tunable Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer device. Investigation of the bar-width and m…
Transport properties of graphene - superconductor junction has been studied extensively to understand the interplay of the relativistic Dirac quasiparticles and superconductivity. Though shot noise measurements in graphene has been performed to realize many theoretical predictions, both at zero magnetic field as well as quantum Hall (QH) regime, its junction with superconductor remain unexplored. Here, we have carried out the shot noise measurements in an edge contacted bilayer graphene - Niobium superconductor junction at zero magnetic field as well as QH regime. At the Dirac point we have ob…
Graphene p-n junctions provide an ideal platform for investigating novel behavior at the boundary between electronics and optics that arise from massless Dirac fermions, such as whispering gallery modes and Veselago lensing. Bilayer graphene also hosts Dirac fermions, but they differ from single-layer graphene charge carriers because they are massive, can be gapped by an applied perpendicular electric field, and have very different pseudospin selection rules across a p-n junction. Novel phenomena predicted for these massive Dirac fermions at p-n junctions include anti-Klein tunneling, oscillat…
When two planar atomic membranes are placed within the van der Waals distance, the charge and heat transport across the interface are coupled by the rules of momentum conservation and structural commensurability, leading to outstanding thermoelectric properties. Here we show that an effective "interlayer phonon drag" determines the Seebeck coefficient (S) across the van der Waals gap formed in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG). The cross-plane thermovoltage, which is non-monotonic in both temperature and density, is generated through scattering of electrons by the out-of-plane layer breathing (Z…
We study the magneto-optical conductivity of a number of Van der Waals heterostructures, namely, twisted bilayer graphene, AB-AB and AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene and monolayer graphene and AB-stacked bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride. As magnetic field increases, the absorption spectrum exhibits a self-similar recursive pattern reflecting the fractal nature of the energy spectrum. Whilst twisted bilayer graphene displays only weak circular dichroism, monolayer graphene and AB-stacked bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride show specifically strong circular dichro…

We have considered the AB-stacked bilayer graphene Josephson junction. The bilayers are supposed to be in the charge equilibrium states and at the half-filling in each of the electronic layers of the construction and at each value of the external gate. By considering the interacting bilayers in both sides of the junction and by taking into account both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction effects, we have calculated the normal and excitonic tunnel currents through the junction. The electronic band renormalizations have been taken into account, due to the excitonic pairing effects and …
Electronic Whispering Gallery Modes (EWGMs) have been recently observed in several circular graphene junctions, pn and pp0, created in scanning tunnelling microscope experiments. By computing the local density of states within the Dirac-Weyl formalism for massless fermions we demonstrate that the EWGMs may really be emerged in any type of the electrostatic potential induced circular graphene junctions, including uni-junctions (e.g. np- or pp0-junctions) as well as bipolar-junctions (e.g. pnp-heterojunctions). Surprisingly, quantitative analyses show that for all the EWGMs identified (regardles…
Graphene hybrid planar structures consisting of two regions with different quantum Hall (QH) states exhibit unusual transport properties1-5, originating from chiral edge states equilibration at the interface of the two different regions6. Here we present a sub-nanometre-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of a monolayer-bilayer graphene planar junction in the QH regime. The atomically well-defined interface of such a junction allows us to spatially resolve the interface electronic properties. Around the interface, we detect Landau quantization of massless…
Photoconductivity of novel materials is the key property of interest for design of photodetectors, optical modulators, and switches. Despite the photoconductivity of most novel 2d materials has been studied both theoretically and experimentally, the same is not true for 2d p-n junctions that are necessary blocks of most electronic devices. Here, we study the sub-terahertz photocoductivity of gapped bilayer graphene with electrically-induced p-n junctions. We find a strong positive contribution from junctions to resistance, temperature resistance coefficient and photo-resistivity at cryogenic t…
Achieving a population imbalance between the two inequivalent valleys is a critical first step for any valleytronic device. A valley-polarization can be induced in biased bilayer graphene using circularly polarized light. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical study of valley-polarization in biased bilayer graphene. We show that a nearly perfect valley-polarization can be achieved with the proper choices of external bias and pulse frequency. We find that the optimal pulse frequency $ω$ is given by $\hbarω=2a,$ where $2a$ is the potential energy difference between the graphene layers.…
Bilayer graphene in a perpendicular electric field can host domain walls between regions of reversed field direction or interlayer stacking. The gapless modes propagating along these domain walls, while not strictly topological, nevertheless have interesting physical properties, including valley-momentum locking. A junction where two domain walls intersect forms the analogue of a quantum point contact. We study theoretically the critical behavior of this junction near the pinch-off transition, which is controlled by two separate classes of non-trivial quantum critical points. For strong intera…
Spin-transfer-induced excitations in bilayer magnetic nanopillars at high fields: The effects of contact layers
研究了低温下垂直于双层磁性纳米柱外加大磁场时的电流感生激发。研究的结都具有Cu/Co/Cu/Co/Cu作为核心层堆叠。 Rev. B 71,140403(R)(2005)],仅存在于B样品中。这说明了接触层对自旋电流诱导现象的重要性。这也证实了最近的预测这样的自旋波激发双层。
We investigate the transport properties of a junction consisting of an electron-hole bilayer in contact with normal and superconducting leads. The electron-hole bilayer is considered as a semi-metal with two electronic bands. We assume that in the region between the contacts the system hosts an exciton condensate described by a BCS-like model with a gap $Γ$ in the quasiparticle density of states. We first discuss how the subgap electronic transport through the junction is mainly governed by the interplay between two kinds of reflection processes at the interfaces: The standard Andreev reflecti…
A new proposal is given to control local magnetic field in a molecular junction. In presence of finite bias a net circular current is established in the molecular ring which induces a magnetic field at its centre. Allowing a direct coupling between two electrodes, due to their close proximity, and changing its strength we can regulate circular current as well as magnetic field for a wide range, without disturbing any other physical parameters. We strongly believe that our proposal is quite robust compared to existing approaches of controlling local magnetic field and can be verified experiment…
Two-dimensional (2D) device structures have recently attracted considerable attention. Here, we show that most 2D device structures, regardless vertical or lateral, act as a lateral monolayer-bilayer-monolayer junction in their operation. In particular, a vertical structure cannot function as a vertical junction as having been widely believed in the literature. Moreover, due to a larger electrostatic screening, the bilayer region in the junction always has a smaller band gap than its monolayer counterpart. As a result, a potential well, aside from the usual potential barrier, will form univers…
