We calculate the dynamical spin-spin correlation functions of a Kondo dot coupled to two noninteracting leads held at different chemical potentials. To this end we generalize a recently developed real-time renormalization group method in frequency space (RTRG-FS) to allow the calculation of dynamical correlation functions of arbitrary dot operators in systems describing spin and/or orbital fluctuations. The resulting two-loop RG equations are analytically solved in the weak-coupling regime. This implies that the method can be applied provided either the voltage $V$ through the dot or the external magnetic field $h_0$ are sufficiently large, $\max\{V,h_0\}\gg T_K$, where the Kondo temperature $T_K$ is the scale where the system enters the strong-coupling regime. Explicitly, we calculate the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin correlation and response functions as well as the resulting fluctuation-dissipation ratios. The correlation functions in real-frequency space can be calculated in Matsubara space without the need of any analytical continuation. We obtain analytic results for the line-shape, the small- and large-frequency limits and several other features like the height and width of the peak in the transverse susceptibility at $Ω\approx\tilde{h}$, where $\tilde{h}$ denotes the reduced magnetic field. Furthermore, we discuss how the developed method can be generalized to calculate dynamical correlation functions of other operators involving reservoir degrees of freedom as well.
We investigate the equilibration of a Kondo model that is initially prepared in a non-equilibrium state towards its equilibrium behavior. Such initial non-equilibrium states can e.g. be realized in quantum dot experiments with time-dependent gate voltages. We evaluate the non-equilibrium spin-spin correlation function at the Toulouse point of the Kondo model exactly and analyze the crossover between non-equilibrium and equilibrium behavior as the non-equilibrium initial state evolves as a function of the waiting time for the first spin measurement. Using the flow equation method we extend thes…
We study the Kondo effect in quantum dots in an out-of-equilibrium state due to an applied dc-voltage bias. Using the method of infinitesimal unitary transformations (flow equations), we develop a perturbative scaling picture that naturally contains both equilibrium coherent and non-equilibrium decoherence effects. This framework allows one to study the competition between Kondo effect and current-induced decoherence, and it establishes a large regime dominated by single-channel Kondo physics for asymmetrically coupled quantum dots.
We study the non-equilibrium noise in mesoscopic diffusive wires hosting magnetic impurities. We find that the shot-noise to current ratio develops a peak at intermediate source-drain biases of the order of the Kondo temperature. The enhanced impurity contribution at intermediate biases is also manifested in the effective distribution. The predicted peak represents increased inelastic scattering rate at the non-equilibrium Kondo crossover.
We find that, under certain condition, a quantum dot with odd number of electron and coupled to two leads can be described by a non-equilibrium 2-channel Kondo model, when the two leads has a large voltage bias between them. The model is exactly soluble and can be mapped into a free fermion system, even in the presence of external magnetic field and other relevant perturbations. All (dynamical) correlation functions can be calculated. The fixed point of the 2-channel Kondo model is a non-equilibrium fixed point and is different from the usual 1-channel and 2-channel Kondo fixed point.
We study the non-equilibrium regime of the Kondo effect in a quantum dot laterally coupled to a narrow wire. We observe a split Kondo resonance when a finite bias voltage is imposed across the wire. The splitting is attributed to the creation of a double-step Fermi distribution function in the wire. Kondo correlations are strongly suppressed when the voltage across the wire exceeds the Kondo temperature. A perpendicular magnetic field enables us to selectively control the coupling between the dot and the two Fermi seas in the wire. Already at fields of order 0.1 T only the Kondo resonance asso…
We present a theoretical study based on the Anderson model of the transport properties of a Kondo impurity (atom or quantum dot) connected to ferromagnetic leads, which can sustain a non-equilibrium spin current. We analyze the case where the spin current is injected by an external source and when it is generated by the voltage bias. Due to the presence of ferromagnetic contacts, a static exchange field is produced that eventually destroys the Kondo correlations. We find that such a field can be compensated by an appropriated combination of the spin-dependent chemical potentials leading to the…
We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium current through a quantum dot coupled to one- dimensional electron leads, utilizing a controlled frequency-dependent renormalization group (RG) approach. We compute the non-equilibrium conductance for large bias voltages and address the interplay between decoherence, Kondo entanglement and Luttinger physics. The combined effect of large bias voltage and strong interactions in the leads, known to stabilize two-channel Kondo physics, leads to non-trivial modifications of the conductance. For weak interactions, we build an analogy to a dot coupled …
It is shown that in resistive nanowires out of equilibrium containing either single- or two-channel Kondo impurities the distribution function $f(E,U)$ obeys scaling behavior in terms of the quasiparticle energy $E$ and the bias voltage $U$. The numerically calculated $f(E,U)$ curves explain quantitatively recent experiments on Cu and Au nanowires. The systematics of the impurity concentration c_{imp} extracted from the comparison between theory and results on various Cu and Au samples strongly suggests that in these systems the scaling arises from magnetic Kondo impurities.
We analytically and numerically compute three equilibrium Fermi-liquid coefficients of the fully screened $N$-channel Kondo model, namely $c_B$, $c_T$ and $c_\varepsilon$, characterizing the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the resisitivity, and the curvature of the equilibrium Kondo resonance, respectively. We present a compact, unified derivation of the $N$-dependence of these coefficients, combining elements from various previous treatments of this model. We numerically compute these coefficients using the numerical renormalization group, with non-Abelian symmetries implemented …
An analytical description of non-equilibrium phenomena in interacting quantum systems is rarely possible. Here we present one example where such a description can be achieved, namely the ferromagnetic Kondo model. In equilibrium, this model is tractable via perturbative renormalization-group techniques. We employ a recently developed extension of the flow-equation method to calculate the non-equilibrium decay of the local magnetization at zero temperature. The flow equations admit analytical solutions which become exact at short and long times, in the latter case revealing that the system alwa…
We develop a consistent method for calculating non-equilibrium Green's functions for a nano-sized dot coupled to electron reservoirs by tunneling. The leads are generally at different chemical potentials (non-equilibrium), and the dot may be a single molecule characterized by its own vibrational frequency $\wph$. We carry out a Keldysh functional analysis of the effective Green's functions of the local electron in the dot, and also of the vibration mode, in the Kondo regime. Finally, the tunneling current is calculated as a function of bias using non-equilibrium Green's function. We find stepw…
We investigate Kondo correlations in a quantum dot with normal and superconducting electrodes, where a spin bias voltage is applied across the device and the local interaction $U$ is either attractive or repulsive. When the spin current is blockaded in the large-gap regime, this nonequilibrium strongly-correlated problem maps into an equilibrium model solvable by the numerical renormalization group method. The Kondo spectra with characteristic splitting due to the nonequilibrium spin accumulation are thus obtained at high precision. It is shown that while the bias-induced decoherence of the sp…
We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot driven out of equilibrium by an external ac field. The Kondo effect can be probed by measuring the dc current induced by an auxiliary dc bias $V_{dc}$ applied across the dot. In the absence of ac perturbation, the corresponding differential conductance $G(V_{dc})$ is known to exhibit a sharp peak at $V_{dc}=0$, which is the manifestation of the Kondo effect. In the equilibrium, there exists only one energy scale, the Kondo temperature $T_K$, which controls all the low-energy physics of the system; $G$ is some universal function of $eV_{dc}/T_K$. We de…
Motivated by recent experiments, we consider a single-electron transistor in the Kondo regime which is coupled to three leads in the presence of large bias voltages. Such a steady-state non-equilibrium system is to a large extent governed by a decoherence rate induced by the current through the dot. As the two-terminal conductance turns out to be rather insensitive to the decoherence rate, we study the conductance in a three-terminal device using perturbative renormalization group and calculate the characteristic splitting of the Kondo resonance. The interplay between potential biases and anis…
We propose an improved method of the equation of motion approach to study the Kondo problem in spin-dependent non-equilibrium conditions. We find that the previously introduced additional renormalization for non-equilibrium Kondo effects is not required when we use a proper decoupling scheme. Our improved formulation is then applied to address the spin-split Kondo peaks when a spin current injects into a Kondo system.
We consider electron transport through a quantum dot described by the Kondo model in the regime of large transport voltage V in the presence of a magnetic field B with max(V,B) >> T_K. The electric current I and the local magnetization M are found to be universal functions of V/T_K and B/T_K, where T_K is the equilibrium Kondo temperature. We present a generalization of the perturbative renormalization group to frequency dependent coupling functions, as necessitated by the structure of bare perturbation theory. We calculate I and M within a poor man's scaling approach and find excellent agreem…
While the properties of the Kondo model in equilibrium are very well understood, much less is known for Kondo systems out of equilibrium. We study the properties of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime, when a large bias voltage V and/or a large magnetic field B is applied. Using the perturbative renormalization group generalized to stationary nonequilibrium situations, we calculate renormalized couplings, keeping their important energy dependence. We show that in a magnetic field the spin occupation of the quantum dot is non-thermal, being controlled by V and B in a complex way to be calculated …
An experiment is proposed to measure the out-of-equilibrium splitting of the Kondo resonance in an ultrasmall quantum dot, by adding a third, weakly coupled lead to the standard two-lead quantum-dot system, and sweeping the chemical potential of that lead. Fixing the voltage bias between the source and drain leads, we show that the differential conductance for the current through the third lead traces the out-of-equilibrium dot density of states (DOS) for the two-lead system. This enables one to measure the dot DOS in the presence of an applied voltage bias. We show that this method is robust,…
We study non-equilibrium transport through a single-orbital Anderson model in a magnetic field with spin-dependent hopping amplitudes. In the cotunneling regime it is described by an effective spin-1/2 dot with a Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya--Kondo (DMK) interaction between the spin on the dot and the electron spins in the leads. Using a real-time renormalization group technique we show that at low temperatures (i) the DMK interaction is strongly renormalized, (ii) the renormalized magnetic field acquires a linear voltage dependence, and (iii) the differential conductance exhibits a voltage asymmetry…
A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope was employed to study the differential conductance in an atomic junction formed by an adsorbed Co atom on a Cu(100) surface and a copper-covered tip. A zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) reveals spin scattering off the Co atom, which is assigned to a Kondo effect. The ZBA exhibits a characteristic asymmetric lineshape when electrons tunnel between tip and sample, while upon the tip-Co contact it symmetrizes and broadens. Through density functional theory calculations and the non-equilibrium non-crossing approximation we show that the lineshape broadening is…
The nonlinear conductance of semiconductor heterostructures and single molecule devices exhibiting Kondo physics has recently attracted attention. We address the observed sample dependence of the measured steady state transport coefficients by considering additional electronic contributions in the effective low-energy model underlying these experiments that are absent in particle-hole symmetric setups. A novel version of the superperturbation theory of Hafermann et al. in terms of dual fermions is developed, which correctly captures the low-temperature behavior. We compare our results with the…
In diffusive Cu and Au quantum wires at finite transport voltage $U$ the non-equilibrium distribution function $f(E,U)$ exhibits scaling behavior, $f(E,U)=f(E/eU)$, indicating anomalous energy relaxation processes in these wires. We show that in nonequilibrium the Kondo effect, generated either by magnetic impurities (single-channel Kondo effect) or possibly by non-magnetic, degenerate two-level systems (two-channel Kondo effect), produces such scaling behavior as a consequence of a Korringa-like (pseudo)spin relaxation rate $\propto U$ and of damped powerlaw behavior of the impurity spectral …
The current in response to a rectangular pulsed bias potential is calculated exactly for a special point in the parameter space of the nonequilibrium Kondo model. Our simple analytical solution shows the all essential features predicted by the noncrossing approximation, including a hierarchy of time scales for the rise, saturation, and fall-off of the current; current oscillations with a frequency of eV/hbar; and the instantaneous reversal of the fall-off current for certain pulse lengths. Rich interference patterns are found for a nonzero magnetic field (either dc or pulsed), with several und…
Electron tunneling through a non-equilibrium double quantum dot in the Kondo regime is studied. In the region of negative differential resistance, it is shown that this system possesses a complex response to the applied potential characterized by a tristable solution for the current. Increasing the applied potential or reducing the inter-dot coupling, the system goes through a transition from a coherent inter-dot regime to an incoherent one. The different nature of the solutions are characterized and it is shown that the effects of the asymmetry in the dot-lead coupling can be used to control …
We calculate conductance through a quantum dot weakly coupled to metallic contacts by means of Keldysh out of equilibrium formalism. We model the quantum dot with the SU(2) Anderson model and consider the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion. We solve the interacting system with the numerical diagrammatic Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA). We calculate the conductance as a function of temperature and gate voltage, from differential conductance (dI/dV) curves. We discuss these results in comparison with those from the linear response approach which can be performed directly in equilibrium conditi…
The archetypal two-impurity Kondo problem in a serially-coupled double quantum dot is investigated in the presence of a thermal bias $θ$. The slave-boson formulation is employed to obtain the nonlinear thermal and thermoelectrical responses. When the Kondo correlations prevail over the antiferromagnetic coupling $J$ between dot spins we demonstrate that the setup shows negative differential thermal conductance regions behaving as a thermal diode. Besides, we report a sign reversal of the thermoelectric current $I(θ)$ controlled by $t/Γ$ ($t$ and $Γ$ denote the interdot tunnel and reservoir-dot…
We investigate theorerically the non-equilibrium transport through a molecular quantum dot as a function of gate and bias voltage, taking into account the typical situation in molecular electronics. In this respect, our study includes asymmetries both in the capacitances and tunneling rates to the source and drain electrodes, as well as an infinitely large charging energy on the molecule. Our calculations are based on the out-of-equilibrium Non-Crossing-Approximation (NCA), which is a reliable technique in the regime under consideration. We find that Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks disp…
We present a theoretical study of low temperature nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum dot in the presence of Zeeman magnetic field and current injection into one of its leads. By using a self-consistent renormalized equation of motion approach, we show that the injection of a spin-polarized current leads to a modulation of the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the differential conductance. We find that an appropriate amount of spin accumulation in the lead can restore the Kondo peak by compensating the splitting due to magnetic field. By contrast when the injected curre…
The out-of-equilibrium electron transport of carbon nanotube semiconducting quantum dot placed in a magnetic field is studied in the Kondo regime by means of the non-equilibrium Green functions. The equation of motion method is used. For parallel magnetic field the Kondo peak splits in four peaks, following the simultaneous splitting of the orbital and spin states. For perpendicular field orientation the triple peak structure of density of states is observed with the central peak corresponding to orbital Kondo effect and the satellites reflecting the spin and spin-orbital fluctuations.
Using a Fermi liquid approach, we provide a comprehensive treatment of the current and current noise through a quantum dot whose low-energy behaviour corresponds to an SU($N$) Kondo model, focusing on the case N=4 relevant to carbon nanotube dots. We show that for general $N$, one needs to consider the effects of higher-order Fermi liquid corrections even to describe low-voltage current and noise. We also show that the noise exhibits complex behaviour due to the interplay between coherent shot noise, and noise arising from interaction-induced scattering events. We treat various imperfections r…
The quintessential description of Kondo physics in equilibrium is obtained within a scaling picture that shows the buildup of Kondo screening at low temperature. For the non-equilibrium Kondo model with a voltage bias the key new feature are decoherence effects due to the current across the impurity. In the present paper we show how one can develop a consistent framework for studying the non-equilibrium Kondo model within a scaling picture of infinitesimal unitary transformations (flow equations). Decoherence effects appear naturally in third order of the beta-function and dominate the Hamilto…
We derive a consistent 2-loop scaling picture for a Kondo dot in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations using the flow equation method. Our analysis incorporates the important decoherence effects from both thermal and non-equilibrium noise in a common setting. We calculate the spin-spin correlation function, the T-matrix, and the magnetization as functions of applied magnetic field, dc-voltage bias and temperature. In all these quantities we observe characteristic non-equilibrium features for a nonvanishing external voltage bias like Kondo splitting and strongly enhanced logarithmic c…
We present analytic results for the finite-frequency current noise and the nonequilibrium ac conductance for a Kondo quantum dot in presence of a magnetic field. Using the real-time renormalization group method, we determine the line shape close to resonances and show that while all resonances in the ac conductance are broadened by the transverse spin relaxation rate, the noise at finite field additionally involves the longitudinal rate as well as sharp kinks resulting in singular derivatives. Our results provide a consistent theoretical description of recent experimental data for the emission…
We consider electromechanical properties of a single-electronic device consisting of movable quantum dot attached to a vibrating cantilever, forming a tunnel contact with a non-movable source electrode. We show that the resonance Kondo tunneling of electrons amplify exponentially the strength of nanoelectromechanical (NEM) coupling in such device and makes the latter to be insensitive to mesoscopic fluctuations of electronic levels in a nano-dot. It is also shown that the study of Kondo-NEM phenomenon provides an additional (as compared with a standard conductance measurements in a non-mechani…
This paper is concerned with the out-of-equilibrium two-lead Kondo model, considered as a model of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We revisit the perturbative expansion of the dot's magnetization, and conclude that, even at order 0 in the Kondo interactions, the magnetization is not given by the usual equilibrium result. We use the Schwinger-Keldysh method to derive a Dyson equation describing the steady state induced by the voltage between the two leads, and thus present the correct procedure for calculating perturbative expansions of steady-state properties of the system.
The concept of dynamical symmetries is used for formulation of the renormalization group approach to the Kondo effect in the Anderson model with repulsive and attractive interaction $U$. It is shown that the generic local symmetry of the Anderson Hamiltonian is determined by the SU(4) Lie group. The Anderson Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices of the 4-th rank, which form the set of group generators and the basis for construction of irreducible vector operators describing the excitation spectra in the charge and spin sectors. The multistage Kondo sceening is described i…
We reexamine basic aspects of a nonequilibrium steady state in the Kondo problem for a quantum dot under a bias voltage using a reduced density matrix, which is obtained in the Fock space by integrating out one of the two conduction channels. The integration has been carried out by discretizing the conduction channels preserving the two-fold degeneracy due to the left-going and right-going scattering states. The remaining subspace is described by a single-channel Anderson model, and the statistical weight is determined by the reduced density matrix. In the noninteracting case, it can be constr…
We study finite-frequency transport properties of the double-dot system recently constructed to observe the two-channel Kondo effect [R. M. Potok et al., Nature 446, 167 (2007)]. We derive an analytical expression for the frequency-dependent linear conductance of this device in the Kondo regime. We show how the features characteristic of the 2-channel Kondo quantum critical point emerge in this quantity, which we compute using the results of conformal field theory as well as numerical renormalization group methods. We determine the universal cross-over functions describing non-Fermi liquid vs.…
We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium quantum phase transition in a generic setup: the pseudogap Kondo model where a quantum dot couples to two-left (L) and right (R)-voltage-biased fermionic leads with power-law density of states (DOS) with respect to their Fermi levels μ_L/R, ρ_c,L(R) (ω) \propto |ω - μ_L(R) |r, and 0 < r < 1. In equilibrium (zero bias voltage) and for 0 < r < 1/2, with increasing Kondo correlations, in the presence of particle-hole symmetry this model exhibits a quantum phase transition from a unscreened local moment (LM) phase to the Kondo phase. Via a controlle…
We develop a nonperturbative dynamical theory (NDT) to calculate the retarded Green's function under nonequilibrium conditions. The NDT is particularly useful for treating nonequilibrium transport problems in systems with strong correlation. We apply our NDT to the well-known single-impurity Anderson model at equilibrium to determine its feasibility. We then apply it to a nonequilibrium transport problem in a system with Kondo coupling. An Anderson model with two metallic reservoirs is studied to understand the phenomenon of Kondo-peak splitting in a single-electron transistor of mesoscopic si…
Dynamical correlations of various local operators are studied in the spin-half two-channel Kondo (2CK) model in the presence of channel anisotropy or external magnetic field. A conformal field theory-based scaling approach is used to predict the analytic properties of various spectral functions in the vicinity of the two-channel Kondo fixed point. These analytical results compare well with highly accurate density matrix numerical renormalization group results. The universal cross-over functions interpolating between channel-anisotropy or magnetic field-induced Fermi liquid regimes and the two-…
The Kondo effect, a hallmark of strong correlation physics, is characterized by the formation of an extended cloud of singlet states around magnetic impurities at low temperatures. While many implications of the Kondo cloud's existence have been verified, the existence of the singlet cloud itself has not been directly demonstrated. We suggest a route for such a demonstration by considering an observable that has no classical analog, but is still experimentally measurable: "singlet weights", or projections onto particular entangled two-particle states. Using approximate theoretical arguments, w…
We investigate the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium Kondo effects in a single-level interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic leads. Within the non-crossing approximation, we calculate the total density of states (DOS), the linear conductance, and the nonlinear differential conductance for both the parallel and the anti-parallel alignments of the spin polarization orientation in the leads, followed by a brief discussion regarding the validity of this approach. Numerical calculations show that for the anti-parallel alignment, a single Kondo peak always appears in the equilibrium …
We study theoretically the out-of-equilibrium transport properties of a double quantum dot system in the Kondo regime. We model the system by means of a two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. The transport properties are characterized by Kondo effect properties, however, superimposed them, the system possesses novel non-linear bistability behavior.
We present here the details of a method [A. B. Culver and N. Andrei, Phys. Rev. B 103, L201103 (2021)] for calculating the time-dependent many-body wavefunction that follows a local quench. We apply the method to the voltage-driven nonequilibrium Kondo model to find the exact time-evolving wavefunction following a quench where the dot is suddenly attached to the leads at $t=0$. The method, which does not use Bethe ansatz, also works in other quantum impurity models and may be of wider applicability. We show that the long-time limit (with the system size taken to infinity first) of the time-evo…
Following the development of a scheme to bosonize and debosonize consistently [N. Shah and C.J. Bolech, Phys. Rev B 93, 085440 (2016); arXiv:1508.03078], we present in detail the Toulouse-point analytic solution of the two-lead Kondo junction model. The existence and location of the solvable point is not modified, but the calculational methodology and the final expressions for observable quantities change markedly as compared to the existent results. This solvable point is one of the remarkably few exact results for non-equilibrium transport in correlated systems. It yields relatively simple a…
We study non-equilibrium transport through a spin-1 Kondo dot in a local magnetic field. To this end we perform a two-loop renormalization group analysis in the weak-coupling regime yielding analytic results for (i) the renormalized magnetic field and the g-factor, (ii) the time evolution of observables and the relevant decay rates, (iii) the magnetization and anisotropy as well as (iv) the current and differential conductance in the stationary state. In particular, we find that compared to a spin-1/2 Kondo dot there exist three additional decay rates resulting in an enhanced broadening of the…
We study the impact of dynamical correlations on the electronic structure and coherent transport properties of Cu nanocontacts hosting a single magnetic impurity (Ni,Co,Fe) in the contact region. The strong dynamical correlations of the impurity 3d-electrons are fully taken into account by combining density functional calculations with a dynamical treatment of the impurity 3d-shell in the one-crossing approximation. We find that dynamical correlations give rise to the Kondo effect and lead to Fano features in the coherent transport characteristics similar to those observed in related experimen…
It is shown that the lesser and greater self energies and Green functions calculated in a recent work on universal noequilibrium transport in interacting quantum dots [E. Muñoz, C. J. Bolech, and S. Kirchner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 016601 (2013)] are incorrect. The authors start from renormalized second-order perturbation theory in the Coulomb repulsion in the particle-hole symmetric impurity Anderson model. The reported lesser self-energy is compared with the correct one, and with an analytic result valid for small frequency and applied voltage. As a consequence of the mistakes, the conservati…
We investigate the equilibrium and real-time properties of the spin correlation function $\langle \vec{S}_1\vec{S}_2 \rangle$ in the two-impurity Kondo model for different distances $R$ between the two-impurity spins. It is shown that the competition between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and the Kondo effect governs the amplitude of $\langle \vec{S}_1\vec{S}_2 \rangle$. For distances $R$ exceeding the Kondo length scale, the Kondo effect also has a profound effect on the sign of the correlation function. For ferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings $J$ between the impurities a…
Quantum criticality in certain heavy-fermion metals is believed to go beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In particular, there is considerable evidence for Kondo destruction: a disappearance of the static Kondo singlet amplitude that results in a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface across the quantum critical point and an extra critical energy scale. This effect can be analyzed in terms of a dynamical interplay between the Kondo and RKKY interactions. In the Kondo-destroyed phase, a well-defined Kondo resonance is lost, but Kondo singlet correlations remain at nonze…
We study the Kondo effect in the electron transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads, using a real-time diagrammatic technique which provides a systematic description of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a system with strong local electron correlations. We evaluate the theory in an extension of the `resonant tunneling approximation', introduced earlier, by introducing the self-energy of the off-diagonal component of the reduced propagator in spin space. In this way we develop a charge and spin conserving approximation that accounts not only for Kondo correlations but also for …
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) plays a fundamental role in understanding quantum many-body problems. However, its applicability is limited to equilibrium systems and it does in general not hold in nonequilibrium situations. This violation of the FDT is an important tool for studying nonequilibrium physics. In this paper we present results for the violation of the FDT in the Kondo model where the impurity spin is frozen for all negative times, and set free to relax at positive times. We derive exact analytical results at the Toulouse point, and results within a controlled approximati…
We propose a scheme to realize the Kondo model with tunable anisotropy using alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice. The new feature of our setup is Floquet engineering of interactions using time-dependent Zeeman shifts, that can be realized either using state-dependent optical Stark shifts or magnetic fields. The properties of the resulting Kondo model strongly depend on the anisotropy of the ferromagnetic interactions. In particular, easy-plane couplings give rise to Kondo singlet formation even though microscopic interactions are all ferromagnetic. We discuss both equilibrium and dynami…
We investigate theoretically the non-equilibrium transport properties of carbon nanotube quantum dots. Owing to the two-dimensional band structure of graphene, a double orbital degeneracy plays the role of a pseudo-spin, which is entangled with the spin. Quantum fluctuations between these four degrees of freedom result in an SU(4) Kondo effect at low temperatures. This exotic Kondo effect manifests as a four-peak splitting in the non-linear conductance when an axial magnetic field is applied.
In this work we analyze the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum impurity (quantum dot or molecule) attached to ferromagnetic leads by using a hybrid numerical renormalization group-time-dependent density matrix renormalization group thermofield quench approach. For this, we study the bias dependence of the differential conductance through the system, which shows a finite zero-bias peak, characteristic of the Kondo resonance and reminiscent of the equilibrium local density of states. In the non-equilibrium settings, the resonance in the differential conductance is also found to decrease w…
A single-electron transistor (SET) in a magnetic field irradiated with microwaves is studied theoretically in non-equilibrium Kondo regime. The two fold effect of frequency--Ω--microwaves is considered as follows: the oscillations in the voltage with frequency Ωand in the coupling parameters with frequency Ω/p (p\in\mathbb{N}). We describe the system by the Kondo model at a specific point in the Toulouse limit. A non-perturbative technique is proposed, namely, the non-equilibrium Green's functions and physical observables are averaged over a period of 2πp/Ω. When the microwave irradiation is c…
We investigate the Kondo model with time-dependent couplings that are periodically switched on and off. On the Toulouse line we derive exact analytical results for the spin dynamics in the steady state that builds up after an infinite number of switching periods. Remarkably, the algebraic long time behavior of the spin-spin correlation function remains completely unaffected by the driving. In the limit of slow driving the dynamics become equivalent to that of a single interaction quench. In the limit of fast driving one can show that the steady state cannot be described by some effective equil…
The Fermi liquid paradigm for metals has contributed enormously to our understanding of condensed matter systems. However a growing number of quantum critical systems have been shown to exhibit non Fermi liquid behavior. A full understanding of such systems is still lacking and in particular analytical results away from equilibrium are rare. In this work, we provide a distinct example of such kind in a two channel Kondo Luttinger model where a Kondo impurity couples to two voltage biased interacting electron leads, experimentally realizable in a dissipative quantum dot. An exotic quantum phase…
