In this paper, we have studied the axiomatics of {\it Ann-categories} and {\it categorical rings.} These are the categories with distributivity constraints whose axiomatics are similar with those of ring structures. The main result we have achieved is proving the independence of the axiomatics of Ann-category definition. And then we have proved that after adding an axiom into the definition of categorical rings, we obtain the new axiomatics which is equivalent to the one of Ann-categories. In [PJ], authors modified the definition of Ann-categories to be the one of {\it categorical rings,} where the condition Ann-1 is omitted, and the compatibility of the operation $\tx$ with the associativity and commutativity is replaced with the compatibility of the operation $\tx$ with the "associativity - commutativity" constraint. This replacement is to make it more convenient in using Mac Lane cohomology. However, the fact that the definition of categorical rings and Ann-categories are equivalent is still an open question. In [q], authors showed that the set of Ann-categories is a subset of the set of categorical rings. And these sets coincide if and only if the condition (U)is satisfied.
By regarding the classical non abelian cohomology of groups from a 2-dimensional categorical viewpoint, we are led to a non abelian cohomology of groupoids which continues to satisfy classification, interpretation and representation theorems generalizing the classical ones. This categorical approach is based on the fact that if groups are regarded as categories, then, on the one hand, crossed modules are 2-groupoids and, cocycles are lax 2-functors and the cocycle conditions are precisely the coherence axioms for lax 2-functors, and, on the other hand group extensions are fibrations of categor…
Recently, symmetric categorical groups are used for the study of the Brauer groups of symmetric monoidal categories. As a part of these efforts, some algebraic structures of the 2-category of symmetric categorical groups $\mathrm{SCG}$ are being investigated. In this paper, we consider a 2-categorical analogue of an abelian category, in such a way that it contains $\mathrm{SCG}$ as an example. As a main theorem, we construct a long cohomology 2-exact sequence from any extension of complexes in such a 2-category. Our axiomatic and self-dual definition will enable us to simplify the proofs, by a…
We apply categorical machinery to the problem of defining cyclic cohomology with coefficients in two particular cases, namely quasi-Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. In the case of the former, no definition was thus far available in the literature, and while a definition exists for the latter, we feel that our approach demystifies the seemingly arbitrary formulas present there. This paper emphasizes the importance of working with a biclosed monoidal category in order to obtain natural coefficients for a cyclic theory that are analogous to the stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules for Hopf…
We describe a simplified categorical approach to Galois descent theory. It is well known that Galois descent is a special case of Grothendieck descent, and that under mild additional conditions the category of Grothendieck descent data coincides with the Eilenberg-Moore category of algebras over a suitable monad. This also suggests using monads directly, and our monadic approach to Galois descent makes no reference to Grothendieck descent theory at all. In order to make Galois descent constructions perfectly clear, we also describe their connections with some other related constructions of cat…
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra and let $\mathcal D_H$ be a Hopf-module category. We describe the cocycles and coboundaries for the Hopf cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal D_H$, which correspond respectively to categorified cycles and vanishing cycles over $\mathcal D_H$. An important role in our work is played by semicategories, which are categories that may not contain identity maps. In particular, a cycle over $\mathcal D_H$ consists of a differential graded $H$-module semicategory equipped with a trace on endomorphism groups satisfying some conditions. Using a pairing on cycles, we obtain a pairing …
We give interpretations of some known key agreement protocols in the framework of category theory and in this way we give a method of constructing of many new key agreement protocols.
In topological dynamics, the Gromov--Yomdin theorem states that the topological entropy of a holomorphic automorphism $f$ of a smooth projective variety is equal to the logarithm of the spectral radius of the induced map $f^*$. In order to establish a categorical analogue of the Gromov--Yomdin theorem, one first needs to find a categorical analogue of a holomorphic automorphism. In this paper, we propose a categorical analogue of a holomorphic automorphism and prove that the Gromov--Yomdin type theorem holds for them.
Recently, the second author, Briseid and Safarik introduced nonstandard Dialectica, a functional interpretation that is capable of eliminating instances of familiar principles of nonstandard arithmetic - including overspill, underspill, and generalisations to higher types - from proofs. We show that, under few metatheoretical assumptions, the properties of this interpretation are mirrored by first order logic in a constructive sheaf model of nonstandard arithmetic due to Moerdijk, later developed by Palmgren. In doing so, we also draw some new connections between nonstandard principles, and pr…
There is a construction which lies at the heart of descent theory. The combinatorial aspects of this paper concern the description of the construction in all dimensions. The description is achieved precisely for strict n-categories and outlined for weak n-categories. The categorical aspects concern the development of descent theory in low dimensions in order to provide a template for a theory in all dimensions. The theory involves non-abelian cohomology, stacks, torsors, homotopy, and higher-dimensional categories. Many of the ideas are scattered through the literature or are folklore; a few a…
We describe a general setting for the definition of semi-infinite cohomology of finite dimensional algebras, and provide its categorical interpretation. We apply this interpretation to compute semi-infinite cohomology of some modules over the small group at a root of unity, generalizing an earlier result of S. Arkhipov (conjectured by B. Feigin).
Categorical rings were introduced by Jibladze and Pirashvili in their paper "Third Mac Lane cohomology via categorical rings", Journal of Homotopy and related structures, 2, 2007, 187-216. We call those "2-rings". In these notes we present basic definitions and results regarding 2-modules. This is work in progress.
In these notes we develop some basic theory of idempotents in monoidal categories. We introduce and study the notion of a pair of complementary idempotents in a triangulated monoidal category, as well as more general idempotent decompositions of identity. If $\mathbf{E}$ is a categorical idempotent then $\operatorname{End}(\mathbf{E})$ is a graded commutative algebra. The same is true of $\operatorname{Hom}(\mathbf{E},\mathbf{E}^c[1])$ under certain circumstances, where $\mathbf{E}^c$ is the complement. These generalize the notions of cohomology and Tate cohomology of a finite dimensional Hopf…
Any $Γ$-graded categorical group is determined by a factor set of a categorical group. This paper studies the factor set of the group $Γ$ with coefficients in the categorical group of the type $(Π,A).$ Then, an interpretation of the notion of $Γ-$operator $3-$cocycle is presented and the proof of cohomological classification theorem for the a $Γ-$graded Gr-category is also presented.
We establish a Galois-theoretic interpretation of cohomology in semi-abelian categories: cohomology with trivial coefficients classifies central extensions, also in arbitrarily high degrees. This allows us to obtain a duality, in a certain sense, between "internal" homology and "external" cohomology in semi-abelian categories. These results depend on a geometric viewpoint of the concept of a higher central extension, as well as the algebraic one in terms of commutators.
To characterize categorical constraints - associativity, commutativity and monoidality - in the context of quasimonoidal categories, from a cohomological point of view, we define the notion of a parity (quasi)complex. Applied to groups gives non-abelian cohomology. The categorification - functor from groups to monoidal categories - provides the correspondence between the respective parity (quasi)complexes and allows to interpret 1-cochains as functors, 2-cocycles - monoidal structures, 3-cocycles - associators. The cohomology spaces H3, H2, H1, H0 correspond as usual to quasi-extensions, exten…
Let $ A $ be a finite connected graded cocommutative Hopf algebra over a field $ k $. There is an endofunctor $ \mathsf{tw} $ on the stable module category $ \mathrm{StMod}_A $ of $ A $ which twists the grading by $ 1 $. We show the categorical entropy of $ \mathsf{tw} $ is zero. We provide a lower bound for the categorical polynomial entropy of $ \mathsf{tw} $ in terms of the Krull dimension of the cohomology of $ A $, and an upper bound in terms of the existence of finite resolutions of $ A $-modules of a particular form. We employ these tools to compute the categorical polynomial entropy of…
In Martin-Löf's Intensional Type Theory, identity type is a heavily used and studied concept. The reason for that is the fact that it's responsible for the recently discovered connection between Type Theory and Homotopy Theory. The main problem with identity types, as originally formulated, is that they are complex to understand and use. Using that fact as motivation, a much simpler formulation for the identity type was proposed by Queiroz & Gabbay (1994) and further developed by de Queiroz & de Oliveira (2013). In this formulation, an element of an identity type is seen as a sequence of rewri…
In this paper we study the structure of a class of categories having two operations which satisfy axioms analoguos to that of rings. Such categories are called "Ann - categories". We obtain the classification theorems for regular Ann - categories and Ann - functors by using Mac Lane - Shukla cohomology of rings. These results give new interpretations of the cohomology groups and of the rings
We classify various types of graded extensions of a finite braided tensor category $\cal B$ in terms of its $2$-categorical Picard groups. In particular, we prove that braided extensions of $\cal B$ by a finite group $A$ correspond to braided monoidal $2$-functors from $A$ to the braided $2$-categorical Picard group of $\cal B$ (consisting of invertible central $\cal B$-module categories). Such functors can be expressed in terms of the Eilnberg-Mac~Lane cohomology. We describe in detail braided $2$-categorical Picard groups of symmetric fusion categories and of pointed braided fusion categorie…
We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.
We present a topos-theoretic interpretation of (a categorical generalization of) Fraisse's construction in model theory, with applications to countably categorical theories.
Locally cartesian closed (lcc) categories are natural categorical models of extensional dependent type theory. This paper introduces the "gros" semantics in the category of lcc categories: Instead of constructing an interpretation in a given individual lcc category, we show that also the category of all lcc categories can be endowed with the structure of a model of dependent type theory. The original interpretation in an individual lcc category can then be recovered by slicing. As in the original interpretation, we face the issue of coherence: Categorical structure is usually preserved by func…
In this article, we develop a general technique for gluing subcategories of $\infty$-categories. We obtain categorical equivalences between simplicial sets associated to certain multisimplicial sets. Such equivalences can be used to construct functors in different contexts. One of our results generalizes Deligne's gluing theory developed in the construction of the extraordinary pushforward operation in étale cohomology of schemes. Our results are applied in subsequent articles to construct Grothendieck's six operations in étale cohomology of Artin stacks.
The popular view according to which Category theory provides a support for Mathematical Structuralism is erroneous. Category-theoretic foundations of mathematics require a different philosophy of mathematics. While structural mathematics studies invariant forms (Awodey) categorical mathematics studies covariant transformations which, generally, don t have any invariants. In this paper I develop a non-structuralist interpretation of categorical mathematics and show its consequences for history of mathematics and mathematics education.
In this paper, we further explore the conceptual approach to cyclic cohomology with coefficients. In particular we give a derived version of the definition with better invariance properties. We show that the new definition agrees with the old under certain conditions and we prove, for the new definition, both its Morita invariance and its $2$-Morita invariance, under suitable interpretations of these terms. More generally, we prove a version of Shapiro's lemma for cyclic cohomology with coefficients.
We give a new construction, based on categorical logic, of Nori's $\mathbb Q$-linear abelian category of mixed motives associated to a cohomology or homology functor with values in finite-dimensional vector spaces over $\mathbb Q$. This new construction makes sense for infinite-dimensional vector spaces as well, so that it associates a $\mathbb Q$-linear abelian category of mixed motives to any (co)homology functor, not only Betti homology (as Nori had done) but also, for instance, $\ell$-adic, $p$-adic or motivic cohomology. We prove that the $\mathbb Q$-linear abelian categories of mixed mot…
We associate to a bimonoidal functor, i.e. a bifunctor which is monoidal in each variable, a nonabelian version of a biextension. We show that such a biextension satisfies additional triviality conditions which make it a bilinear analog of the kind of spans known as butterflies and, conversely, these data determine a bimonoidal functor. We extend this result to $n$-variables, and prove that, in a manner analogous to that of butterflies, these multi-extensions can be composed. This is phrased in terms of a multilinear functor calculus in a bicategory. As an application, we study a bimonoidal ca…
