Natural images in the colour space YUV have been observed to have a non-Gaussian, heavy tailed distribution (called 'sparse') when the filter G(U)(r) = U(r) - sum_{s \in N(r)} w{(Y)_{rs}} U(s), is applied to the chromacity channel U (and equivalently to V), where w is a weighting function constructed from the intensity component Y [1]. In this paper we develop Bayesian analysis of the colorization problem using the filter response as a regularization term to arrive at a non-convex optimization problem. This problem is convexified using L1 optimization which often gives the same results for sparse signals [2]. It is observed that L1 optimization, in many cases, over-performs the famous colorization algorithm by Levin et al [3].
For realistic and vivid colorization, generative priors have recently been exploited. However, such generative priors often fail for in-the-wild complex images due to their limited representation space. In this paper, we propose BigColor, a novel colorization approach that provides vivid colorization for diverse in-the-wild images with complex structures. While previous generative priors are trained to synthesize both image structures and colors, we learn a generative color prior to focus on color synthesis given the spatial structure of an image. In this way, we reduce the burden of synthesiz…

We develop a fully automatic image colorization system. Our approach leverages recent advances in deep networks, exploiting both low-level and semantic representations. As many scene elements naturally appear according to multimodal color distributions, we train our model to predict per-pixel color histograms. This intermediate output can be used to automatically generate a color image, or further manipulated prior to image formation. On both fully and partially automatic colorization tasks, we outperform existing methods. We also explore colorization as a vehicle for self-supervised visual re…
We develop a probabilistic technique for colorizing grayscale natural images. In light of the intrinsic uncertainty of this task, the proposed probabilistic framework has numerous desirable properties. In particular, our model is able to produce multiple plausible and vivid colorizations for a given grayscale image and is one of the first colorization models to provide a proper stochastic sampling scheme. Moreover, our training procedure is supported by a rigorous theoretical framework that does not require any ad hoc heuristics and allows for efficient modeling and learning of the joint pixel…
Colorization is the method of converting an image in grayscale to a fully color image. There are multiple methods to do the same. Old school methods used machine learning algorithms and optimization techniques to suggest possible colors to use. With advances in the field of deep learning, colorization results have improved consistently with improvements in deep learning architectures. The latest development in the field of deep learning is the emergence of generative adversarial networks (GANs) which is used to generate information and not just predict or classify. As part of this report, 2 ar…

We propose the first deep learning approach for exemplar-based local colorization. Given a reference color image, our convolutional neural network directly maps a grayscale image to an output colorized image. Rather than using hand-crafted rules as in traditional exemplar-based methods, our end-to-end colorization network learns how to select, propagate, and predict colors from the large-scale data. The approach performs robustly and generalizes well even when using reference images that are unrelated to the input grayscale image. More importantly, as opposed to other learning-based colorizati…
Colorization is a process that converts a grayscale image into a color one that looks as natural as possible. Over the years this task has received a lot of attention. Existing colorization methods rely on different color spaces: RGB, YUV, Lab, etc. In this chapter, we aim to study their influence on the results obtained by training a deep neural network, to answer the question: "Is it crucial to correctly choose the right color space in deep-learning based colorization?". First, we briefly summarize the literature and, in particular, deep learning-based methods. We then compare the results ob…
This paper tackles the automatic colorization task of a sketch image given an already-colored reference image. Colorizing a sketch image is in high demand in comics, animation, and other content creation applications, but it suffers from information scarcity of a sketch image. To address this, a reference image can render the colorization process in a reliable and user-driven manner. However, it is difficult to prepare for a training data set that has a sufficient amount of semantically meaningful pairs of images as well as the ground truth for a colored image reflecting a given reference (e.g…

Deep learning has thrived by training on large-scale datasets. However, in many applications, as for medical image diagnosis, getting massive amount of data is still prohibitive due to privacy, lack of acquisition homogeneity and annotation cost. In this scenario, transfer learning from natural image collections is a standard practice that attempts to tackle shape, texture and color discrepancies all at once through pretrained model fine-tuning. In this work, we propose to disentangle those challenges and design a dedicated network module that focuses on color adaptation. We combine learning f…
Microscopy images are powerful tools and widely used in the majority of research areas, such as biology, chemistry, physics and materials fields by various microscopies (scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and the optical microscope, et al.). However, most of the microscopy images are colorless due to the unique imaging mechanism. Though investigating on some popular solutions proposed recently about colorizing images, we notice the process of those methods are usually tedious, complicated, and time-consuming. In this paper, inspired by the achievement of machine …

In this paper, we present a color transfer algorithm to colorize a broad range of gray images without any user intervention. The algorithm uses a machine learning-based approach to automatically colorize grayscale images. The algorithm uses the superpixel representation of the reference color images to learn the relationship between different image features and their corresponding color values. We use this learned information to predict the color value of each grayscale image superpixel. As compared to processing individual image pixels, our use of superpixels helps us to achieve a much higher…

Compared to color images captured by conventional RGB cameras, monochrome images usually have better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and richer textures due to its higher quantum efficiency. It is thus natural to apply a mono-color dual-camera system to restore color images with higher visual quality. In this paper, we propose a mono-color image enhancement algorithm that colorizes the monochrome image with the color one. Based on the assumption that adjacent structures with similar luminance values are likely to have similar colors, we first perform dense scribbling to assign colors to the monoch…

This paper proposes a method for transferring the RGB color spectrum to near-infrared (NIR) images using deep multi-scale convolutional neural networks. A direct and integrated transfer between NIR and RGB pixels is trained. The trained model does not require any user guidance or a reference image database in the recall phase to produce images with a natural appearance. To preserve the rich details of the NIR image, its high frequency features are transferred to the estimated RGB image. The presented approach is trained and evaluated on a real-world dataset containing a large amount of road sc…

The recent growth in the number of satellite images fosters the development of effective deep-learning techniques for Remote Sensing (RS). However, their full potential is untapped due to the lack of large annotated datasets. Such a problem is usually countered by fine-tuning a feature extractor that is previously trained on the ImageNet dataset. Unfortunately, the domain of natural images differs from the RS one, which hinders the final performance. In this work, we propose to learn meaningful representations from satellite imagery, leveraging its high-dimensionality spectral bands to reconst…

Image colorization achieves more and more realistic results with the increasing computation power of recent deep learning techniques. It becomes more difficult to identify the fake colorized images by human eyes. In this work, we propose a novel forensic method to distinguish between natural images (NIs) and colorized images (CIs) based on convolutional neural network (CNN). Our method is able to achieve high classification accuracy and cope with the challenging scenario of blind detection, i.e., no training sample is available from "unknown" colorization algorithm that we may encounter during…
Conditional diffusion probabilistic models can model the distribution of natural images and can generate diverse and realistic samples based on given conditions. However, oftentimes their results can be unrealistic with observable color shifts and textures. We believe that this issue results from the divergence between the probabilistic distribution learned by the model and the distribution of natural images. The delicate conditions gradually enlarge the divergence during each sampling timestep. To address this issue, we introduce a new method that brings the predicted samples to the training …

We present a new latent model of natural images that can be learned on large-scale datasets. The learning process provides a latent embedding for every image in the training dataset, as well as a deep convolutional network that maps the latent space to the image space. After training, the new model provides a strong and universal image prior for a variety of image restoration tasks such as large-hole inpainting, superresolution, and colorization. To model high-resolution natural images, our approach uses latent spaces of very high dimensionality (one to two orders of magnitude higher than prev…

Optimization-based filtering smoothes an image by minimizing a fidelity function and simultaneously preserves edges by exploiting a sparse norm penalty over gradients. It has obtained promising performance in practical problems, such as detail manipulation, HDR compression and deblurring, and thus has received increasing attentions in fields of graphics, computer vision and image processing. This paper derives a new type of image filter called sparse norm filter (SNF) from optimization-based filtering. SNF has a very simple form, introduces a general class of filtering techniques, and explains…
Many interesting tasks in image restoration can be cast as linear inverse problems. A recent family of approaches for solving these problems uses stochastic algorithms that sample from the posterior distribution of natural images given the measurements. However, efficient solutions often require problem-specific supervised training to model the posterior, whereas unsupervised methods that are not problem-specific typically rely on inefficient iterative methods. This work addresses these issues by introducing Denoising Diffusion Restoration Models (DDRM), an efficient, unsupervised posterior sa…
We introduce a new architecture called a conditional invertible neural network (cINN), and use it to address the task of diverse image-to-image translation for natural images. This is not easily possible with existing INN models due to some fundamental limitations. The cINN combines the purely generative INN model with an unconstrained feed-forward network, which efficiently preprocesses the conditioning image into maximally informative features. All parameters of a cINN are jointly optimized with a stable, maximum likelihood-based training procedure. Even though INN-based models have received…

Employing deep neural networks as natural image priors to solve inverse problems either requires large amounts of data to sufficiently train expressive generative models or can succeed with no data via untrained neural networks. However, very few works have considered how to interpolate between these no- to high-data regimes. In particular, how can one use the availability of a small amount of data (even $5-25$ examples) to one's advantage in solving these inverse problems and can a system's performance increase as the amount of data increases as well? In this work, we consider solving linear …

Following the presentation and proof of the hypothesis that image features are particularly perceived at points where the Fourier components are maximally in phase, the concept of phase congruency (PC) is introduced. Subsequently, a two-dimensional multi-scale phase congruency (2D-MSPC) is developed, which has been an important tool for detecting and evaluation of image features. However, the 2D-MSPC requires many parameters to be appropriately tuned for optimal image features detection. In this paper, we defined a criterion for parameter optimization of the 2D-MSPC, which is a function of its…
