Half-integer photon-resonances in a periodically shaken double well are investigated on the level of the N-particle quantum dynamics. Contrary to non-linear mean-field equations, the linear N-particle Schrodinger equation does not contain any non-linearity which could be the origin of such resonances. Nevertheless, analytic calculations on the N-particle level explain why such resonances can be observed even for particle numbers as low as N = 2. These calculations also demonstrate why fractional photon resonances are not restricted to half-integer values.
With use of the U(1) quantum rotor method in the path integral effective action formulation, we have confirmed the mathematical similarity of the phase Hamiltonian and of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with density-induced tunneling (DIT). Moreover, we have shown that the latter model can be mapped to a pseudospin Hamiltonian that exhibits two coexisting (single-particle and pair) superfluid phases. Phase separation of the two has also been confirmed, determining that there exists a range of coefficients in which only pair condensation, and not single-particle superfluidity, is present. The D…
We report on the experimental implementation of tunable occupation-dependent tunneling in a Bose-Hubbard system of ultracold atoms via time-periodic modulation of the on-site interaction energy. The tunneling rate is inferred from a time-resolved measurement of the lattice site occupation after a quantum quench. We demonstrate coherent control of the tunneling dynamics in the correlated many-body system, including full suppression of tunneling as predicted within the framework of Floquet theory. We find that the tunneling rate explicitly depends on the atom number difference in neighboring lat…
We investigate the applicability of laser assisted tunneling in a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas (the Tonks-Girardeau gas) in optical lattices. We find that the stroboscopic dynamics of the Tonks-Girardeau gas in a continuous Wannier-Stark-ladder potential, supplemented with laser assisted tunneling, effectively realizes the ground state of one-dimensional hard-core bosons in a discrete lattice with nontrivial hopping phases. We compare observables that are affected by the interactions, such as the momentum distribution, natural orbitals and their occupancies, in the time-depend…
Tunneling of a quasibound state is a non-smooth process in the entangled many-body case. Using time-evolving block decimation, we show that repulsive (attractive) interactions speed up (slow down) tunneling, which occurs in bursts. While the escape time scales exponentially with small interactions, the maximization time of the von Neumann entanglement entropy between the remaining quasibound and escaped atoms scales quadratically. Stronger interactions require higher order corrections. Entanglement entropy is maximized when about half the atoms have escaped.
We investigate the dynamical phase transition of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear tunneling, which is trapped inside a double-well and dispersively coupled to a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity with one moving end mirror driven by a single mode standing field. The nonlinear tunneling interaction leads to an increase of stability points and riches the phase diagram of the system. It is shown that the appearance of the moving end mirror speeds up the tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates, which makes population difference between two wells and regulates the numb…
We experimentally study tunneling of Bose-condensed $^{87}$Rb atoms prepared in a quasi-bound state and observe a non-exponential decay caused by interatomic interactions. A combination of a magnetic quadrupole trap and a thin $1.3\mathrm{μm}$ barrier created using a blue-detuned sheet of light is used to tailor traps with controllable depth and tunneling rate. The escape dynamics strongly depend on the mean-field energy, which gives rise to three distinct regimes--- classical spilling over the barrier, quantum tunneling, and decay dominated by background losses. We show that the tunneling rat…
Recent experiments on macroscopic quantum tunneling reveal a non-exponential decay of the number of atoms trapped in a quasibound state behind a potential barrier. Through both experiment and theory, we demonstrate this non-exponential decay results from interactions between atoms. Quantum tunneling of tens of thousands of 87 Rb atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled by a modified Jeffreys-Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin model, taking into account the effective time-dependent barrier induced by the mean-field. Three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations corroborate a mean-field result whe…
We study the collapse dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a sudden change of the scattering length to a negative value by adopting the self-consistent Gaussian state theory for mixed states. Compared to the Gross-Pitaevskii and the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approaches, both fluctuations and three-body loss are properly treated in our theory. We find a new type of collapse assisted by fluctuations which amplify the attractive interaction between atoms. Moreover, the calculation of the fluctuated atoms, the entropy, and the second-order correlation function showed that the collapse…
We provide an analytical model to fabricate an exponential localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate under bichromatic optical lattice. Such localization is famously known as Anderson localization. The degree of localization is investigated by the Participation Ratio to recognize the laser parameter domain for Anderson localization. The exponential nature of the localization is proved, where we also identify the Localization Length. The tunneling of Anderson-localized condensate with time is observed, and the revival phenomenon of Anderson localization is reported. Slowing down of Anderson lo…
We study the ground-state behavior of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) in a Raman-laser-assisted one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice potential forming a multilayer system. We find that, such system can be described by an effective model with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of pseudospin $(N-1)/2$, where $N$ is the number of layers. Due to the intricate interplay between atomic interactions, SOC and laser-assisted tunnelings, the ground-state phase diagrams generally consist of three phases -- a stripe, a plane wave and a normal phase with zero-momentum, touching at a quantum tricritical point. More…
We propose a scheme to realize the rotation sensing using optical lattices with laser-assisted tunneling. We demonstrate that the competition between the rotation and the spin-orbit coupling governs the spin-dependent response of the cyclotron dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled bosons. The Sagnac-type cumulative phase can be read out from the envelop of a beat-frequency particle current in the spin-balanced system and enhanced by the cyclotron motion. We also theoretically show that the sensitivity limit of the spin-orbit-coupled system to the rotational motion can reach 7*10^-8 rad s^-1 Hz^1/…
Considerable progress in experimental studies of atomic gases in a toroidal geometry has opened up novel prospects for the investigation of fundamental properties of superfluid states and creation of new configurations for atomtronic circuits. In particular, atomic Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in a dual-ring trap suggest a possibility to consider the tunneling dynamics between coupled condensates with different angular momenta. Accordingly, we address the tunneling in a pair of coaxial ring-shaped condensates separated by a horizontal potential barrier. A weak-coupling truncated (finite-mo…
We unravel the correlated tunneling dynamics of an impurity trapped in a double well and interacting repulsively with a majority species of lattice trapped bosons. Upon quenching the tilt of the double well it is found that the quench-induced tunneling dynamics depends crucially on the interspecies interaction strength and the presence of entanglement inherent in the system. In particular, for weak couplings the impurity performs a rather irregular tunneling process in the double well. Increasing the interspecies coupling it is possible to control the response of the impurity which undergoes a…
We study a one-dimensional disordered Bose fluid using bosonization, the replica method and a nonperturbative functional renormalization-group approach. We find that the Bose-glass phase is described by a fully attractive strong-disorder fixed point characterized by a singular disorder correlator whose functional dependence assumes a cuspy form that is related to the existence of metastable states. At nonzero momentum scale $k$, quantum tunneling between the ground state and low-lying metastable states leads to a rounding of the cusp singularity into a quantum boundary layer (QBL). The width o…
Applying time-periodic modulations is routinely used to control and design synthetic matter in quantum-engineered settings. In lattice systems, this approach is explored to engineer band structures with non-trivial topological properties, but also to generate exotic interaction processes. A prime example is density-assisted tunneling, by which the hopping amplitude of a particle between neighboring sites explicitly depends on their respective occupations. Here, we show how density-assisted tunneling can be tailored in view of simulating the effects of strain in synthetic graphene-type systems.…
We theoretically investigate the generation of microscopic atomic NOON states, corresponding to the coherent |N,0> + |0,N> superposition with N ~ 5 particles, via collective tunneling of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms within a symmetric double-well potential in the self-trapping regime. We show that a periodic driving of the double well with suitably tuned amplitude and frequency parameters allows one to substantially boost this tunneling process without altering its collective character. The time scale to generate the NOON superposition, which corresponds to half the tunneling time and w…
We present the quantum and classical study of a four-well trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) modeled by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. The model used is fashioned as a minimal bipartite system consisting of a trimer coupled weakly to a monomer. Semiclassical insights into the fragmentation dynamics of the condensate is obtained by mapping out the Arnold web of the high dimensional classical phase space. A remarkable one-to-one correspondence between the quantum state space in occupation number representation and the classical Arnold web in action space is observed. The relevance of dynamica…
The quantum dynamics of population-balanced fractional vortices and population-imbalanced vortices in an effective two-state bosonic system, made of two coupled discrete circuits with few sites, is addressed within the Bose-Hubbard model. % We show that for low on-site interaction, the tunneling of quantized vortices between the rings performs a coherent, oscillating dynamics connecting current states with chiral symmetry. The vortex-flux transfer dually follows the usual sinusoidal particle current of the Josephson effect, in good agreement with a mean-field approximation. Within such regime,…
We present an extension of the chaos-assisted tunneling mechanism to spatially periodic lattice systems. We demonstrate that driving such lattice systems in an intermediate regime of modulation maps them onto tight-binding Hamiltonians with chaos-induced long-range hoppings $t_n \propto 1/n$ between sites at a distance $n$. We provide a numerical demonstration of the robustness of the results and derive an analytical prediction for the hopping term law. Such systems can thus be used to enlarge the scope of quantum simulations to experimentally realize long-range models of condensed matter.
The transmission of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate incident on a repulsive Gaussian barrier is investigated through numerical simulation. The dynamics associated with interatomic interactions are studied across a broad parameter range not previously explored. Effective 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) simulations are compared to classical Boltzmann-Vlasov equation (BVE) simulations in order to isolate purely coherent matterwave effects. Quantum tunneling is then defined as the portion of the GPE transmission not described by the classical BVE. An exponential dependence of transmissi…
