We develop a theory of gauge and dynamical equivalence for Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids, also studying its relationship with Noether and non-Noether conserved quantities.
This paper develops the notion of implicit Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids and a Hamilton--Jacobi theory for this type of system. The Lie algebroid framework provides a natural generalization of classical tangent bundle geometry. We define the notion of an implicit Lagrangian system on a Lie algebroid $E$ using Dirac structures on the Lie algebroid prolongation $\T^EE^*$. This setting includes degenerate Lagrangian systems with nonholonomic constraints on Lie algebroids.
In this survey, we present a geometric description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie algebroids. The flexibility of the Lie algebroid formalism allows us to analyze systems subject to nonholonomic constraints, mechanical control systems, Discrete Mechanics and extensions to Classical Field Theory within a single framework. Various examples along the discussion illustrate the soundness of the approach.
In some previous papers, a geometric description of Lagrangian Mechanics on Lie algebroids has been developed. In the present paper, we give a Hamiltonian description of Mechanics on Lie algebroids. In addition, we introduce the notion of a Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic Lie algebroid and we prove that the Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) dynamics on Lie algebroids may be described in terms of Lagrangian submanifolds of symplectic Lie algebroids. The Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) formalism on Lie algebroids permits to deal with Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) functions not defined necessarily on tangent (…
As a continuation of previous papers, we study the concept of a Lie algebroid structure on an affine bundle by means of the canonical immersion of the affine bundle into its bidual. We pay particular attention to the prolongation and various lifting procedures, and to the geometrical construction of Lagrangian-type dynamics on an affine Lie algebroid.
The language of Lagrangian submanifolds is used to extend a geometric characterization of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations on tangent bundles to regular Lie algebroids. Since not all closed sections are locally exact on Lie algebroids, the Helmholtz conditions on Lie algebroids are necessary but not sufficient, so they give a weaker definition of the inverse problem. As an application the Helmholtz conditions on Atiyah algebroids are obtained so that the relationship between the inverse problem and the reduced inverse problem by symmetries can be described. Some examples and c…
The study of mechanical systems on Lie algebroids permits an understanding of the dynamics described by a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian function for a wide range of mechanical systems in a unified framework. Systems defined in tangent bundles, Lie algebras, principal bundles, reduced systems and constrained are included in such description. In this paper, we investigate how to derive the dynamics associated with a Lagrangian system defined on the set of admissible elements of a given Lie algebroid using Tulczyjew's triple on Lie algebroids and constructing a Lagrangian Lie subalgebroid of a symple…
The purpose of this paper is describe Lagrangian Mechanics for constrained systems on Lie algebroids, a natural framework which covers a wide range of situations (systems on Lie groups, quotients by the action of a Lie group, standard tangent bundles...). In particular, we are interested in two cases: singular Lagrangian systems and vakonomic mechanics (variational constrained mechanics). Several examples illustrate the interest of these developments.
We present a unified approach to constrained implicit Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems based on the introduced concept of Dirac algebroid. The latter is a certain almost Dirac structure associated with the Courant algebroid on the dual $E^\ast$ to a vector bundle $E$. If this almost Dirac structure is integrable (Dirac), we speak about a Dirac-Lie algebroid. The bundle $E$ plays the role of the bundle of kinematic configurations (quasi-velocities), while the bundle $E^\ast$ - the role of the phase space. This setting is totally intrinsic and does not distinguish between regular and singular …
We study the geometric nature of the Jacobi equation. In particular we prove that Jacobi vector fields (JVFs) along a solution of the Euler-Lagrange (EL) equations are themselves solutions of the EL equations but considered on a non-standard algebroid (different from the tangent bundle Lie algebroid). As a consequence we obtain a simple non-computational proof of the relation between the null subspace of the second variation of the action and the presence of JVFs (and conjugate points) along an extremal. We work in the framework of skew-symmetric algebroids.
In this paper we introduce a geometric description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian classical field theories on Lie algebroids in the framework of k-symplectic geometry. We discuss the relation between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions through a convenient notion of Legendre transformation. The theory is a natural generalization of the standard one; in addition, other interesting examples are studied, in particular, systems with symmetry and Poisson sigma models.
This paper presents a geometric description on Lie algebroids of Lagrangian systems subject to nonholonomic constraints. The Lie algebroid framework provides a natural generalization of classical tangent bundle geometry. We define the notion of nonholonomically constrained system, and characterize regularity conditions that guarantee the dynamics of the system can be obtained as a suitable projection of the unconstrained dynamics. The proposed novel formalism provides new insights into the geometry of nonholonomic systems, and allows us to treat in a unified way a variety of situations, includ…
A solution for the Weinstein's Problem in the general framework of generalized Lie algebroids is the target of this paper. We present the mechanical systems called by use, mechanical (?; ?)-systems, Lagrange mechanical (?; ?)-systems or Finsler mechanical (?; ?)-systems and we develop their geometries. We obtain the canonical (?; ?)-semi(spray) associated to a mechanical (?; ?)-system. The Lagrange mechanical (?; ?)-systems are the spaces necessary to develop a Lagrangian formalism. We obtain the (?; ?)-semispray associated to a regular Lagrangian L and external force Fe and we derive the equa…
In this paper, the geometric approach to the virial theorem developed in \cite{CFR12} is written in terms of quasi-velocities (see \cite{CNCS07}). A generalization of the virial theorem for mechanical systems on Lie algebroids is also given, using the geometric tools of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics on the prolongation of the Lie algebroid.
In this paper, we introduce a geometric description of contact Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems on Lie algebroids in the framework of contact geometry, using the theory of prolongations. We discuss the relation between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian settings through a convenient notion of Legendre transformation. We also discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi problem in this framework and introduce the notion of a Legendrian Lie subalgebroid of a contact Lie algebroid.
A natural geometric framework is proposed, based on ideas of W. M. Tulczyjew, for constructions of dynamics on general algebroids. One obtains formalisms similar to the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian ones. In contrast with recently studied concepts of Analytical Mechanics on Lie algebroids, this approach requires much less than the presence of a Lie algebroid structure on a vector bundle, but it still reproduces the main features of the Analytical Mechanics, like the Euler-Lagrange-type equations, the correspondence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions (Legendre transform) in the h…
In some previous papers, a Legendre duality between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics has been developed. The (ρ,η)-tangent application of the Legendre bundle morphism associated to a Lagrangian L or Hamiltonian H is presented. Using that, a Legendre description of Lagrangian Mechanics and Hamiltonian Mechanics is developed. Duality between Lie algebroids structure, adapted (ρ,η)-basis, distinguished linear (ρ,η)-connections and mechanical (ρ,η)-systems is the scope of this paper. In the particular case of Lie algebroids, new results are presented. In the particular case of the usual Lie al…
In order to obtain a framework in which both non-holonomic mechanical systems and non-holonomic mechanical systems with symmetry can be described, we introduce in this paper the notion of a Lagrangian system on a subbundle of a Lie algebroid.
The k-cosymplectic Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of first-order field theories are reviewed and completed. In particular, they are stated for singular and almost-regular systems. Subsequently, several alternative formulations for k-cosymplectic first-order field theories are developed: First, generalizing the construction of Tulczyjew for mechanics, we give a new interpretation of the classical field equations in terms of certain submanifolds of the tangent bundle of the $k^1$-velocities of a manifold. Second, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms are unified by giving an extension…
The jet formalism for Classical Field theories is extended to the setting of Lie algebroids. We define the analog of the concept of jet of a section of a bundle and we study some of the geometric structures of the jet manifold. When a Lagrangian function is given, we find the equations of motion in terms of a Cartan form canonically associated to the Lagrangian. The Hamiltonian formalism is also extended to this setting and we find the relation between the solutions of both formalism. When the first Lie algebroid is a tangent bundle we give a variational description of the equations of motion.…
The equations for the critical points of the action functional defined by a Lagrangian depending on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid are found. The relation with Euler-Poincaré and Lagrange Poincaré type equations is studied. Reduction and reconstruction results for such systems are established.
It is shown that the Euler-Lagrange equations for a Lagrangian system on a Lie algebroid are obtained as the equations for the critical points of the action functional defined on a Banach manifold of curves. The theory of reduction and the relation with Lagrange multiplier method are also studied.
\emph{Mechanical systems} called by use, \emph{mechanical}$\left(ρ,η\right) $\emph{-systems, Lagrange mechanical}$\left(ρ,η\right) $\emph{-systems} or \emph{Finsler mechanical}$\left(ρ,η\right) $\emph{-systems} are presented. The canonical $\left(ρ,η\right) $\emph{-}semi(spray) associated to a mechanical $\left(ρ,η\right) $-system is obtained. New and important results are obtained in the particular case of Lie algebroids. The Lagrange mechanical $(ρ,η)$% -systems are the spaces necessary to develop a new Lagrangian formalism. We obtain the $(ρ,η)$-semispray associated to a regular Lagrangian …
The variational formalism for classical field theories is extended to the setting of Lie algebroids. Given a Lagrangian function we study the problem of finding critical points of the action functional when we restrict the fields to be morphisms of Lie algebroids. In addition to the standard case, our formalism includes as particular examples the case of systems with symmetry (covariant Euler-Poincare and Lagrange Poincare cases), Sigma models or Chern-Simons theories.
We analyse the complex-valued Klein-Gordon Equation from an integrability perspective by the implementation of the Lie Theory of Continuous Groups, where this equation is governed by power-law nonlinearity. We write the equations in terms of real dependent variables and examine both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. In the case of the two-dimensional model the analysis is extended by the determination of Noether point symmetries and conserved vectors via the construction of a Lagrangian.
We review some recent results on the theory of Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids. In particular we consider the symplectic and variational formalism and we study reduction. Finally we also consider optimal control systems on Lie algebroids and we show how to reduce Pontryagin maximum principle.
We introduce the notion of a Lie algebroid structure on an affine bundle whose base manifold is fibred over the real numbers. It is argued that this is the framework which one needs for coming to a time-dependent generalization of the theory of Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids. An extensive discussion is given of a way one can think of forms acting on sections of the affine bundle. It is further shown that the affine Lie algebroid structure gives rise to a coboundary operator on such forms. The concept of admissible curves and dynamical systems whose integral curves are admissible, brings …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a pre-symplectic algebroid, and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between pre-symplectic algebroids and symplectic Lie algebroids. This result is the geometric generalization of the relation between left-symmetric algebras and symplectic (Frobenius) Lie algebras. Although pre-symplectic algebroids are not left-symmetric algebroids, they still can be viewed as the underlying structures of symplectic Lie algebroids. %We study three classes of pre-symplectic algebroids in detail. Then we study exact pre-symplectic algebroids and show that the…
We generalize the $(n+1)$-dimensional twisted $R$-Poisson topological sigma model with flux on a target Poisson manifold to a Lie algebroid. Analyzing consistency of constraints in the Hamiltonian formalism and the gauge symmetry in the Lagrangian formalism, geometric conditions of the target space to make the topological sigma model consistent are identified. The geometric condition is an universal compatibility condition of a Lie algebroid with the multi-symplectic structure. This condition is a generalization of the momentum map theory of a Lie group and is regarded as a generalization of t…
In recent years methods for the integration of Poisson manifolds and of Lie algebroids have been proposed, the latter being usually presented as a generalization of the former. In this note it is shown that the latter method is actually related to (and may be derived from) a particular case of the former if one regards dual of Lie algebroids as special Poisson manifolds. The core of the proof is the fact, discussed in the second part of this note, that coisotropic submanifolds of a (twisted) Poisson manifold are in one-to-one correspondence with possibly singular Lagrangian subgroupoids of sou…
This paper develops a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics on fibered manifolds, together with a reduction theory for symmetries corresponding to Lie groupoid actions. As special cases, this theory includes not only Lagrangian reduction (including reduction by stages) for Lie group actions, but also classical Routh reduction, which we show is naturally posed in this fibered setting. Along the way, we also develop some new results for Lagrangian mechanics on Lie algebroids, most notably a new, coordinate-free formulation of the equations of motion. Finally, we extend the foregoing to…
We characterize symmetry transformations of Lagrangian extremals generating `on shell' conservation laws. We relate symmetry transformations of extremals to Jacobi fields and study symmetries of higher variations by proving that a pair given by a symmetry of the $l$-th variation of a Lagrangian and by a Jacobi field of the $s$-th variation of the same Lagrangian (with $s<l$) is associated with an `off shell' conserved current. The conserved current associated with two symmetry transformations is constructed and, as a case of study, its expression for invariant Yang--Mills connections on Minkow…
It is known that corresponding to each isometry there exist a conserved quantity. It is also known that the Lagrangian of the line element of a space is conserved. Here we investigate the possibility of the existence of "new" conserved quantities, i.e. other than the Lagrangian and associated with the isometries, for spaces of different curvatures. It is found that there exist new conserved quantities only for the spaces of zero curvature or having a section of zero curvature.
This paper shows the equivalence of the categories of $N$-manifolds of degree $2$ with the category of double vector bundles endowed with a linear metric. Split Poisson $N$-manifolds of degree $2$ are shown to be equivalent to self-dual representations up to homotopy. As a consequence, the equivalence above induces an equivalence between so called metric VB-algebroids and Poisson $N$-manifolds of degree $2$. Then a new description of split Lie $2$-algebroids is given, as well as their "duals", the Dorfman $2$-representations. We show that Dorfman $2$-representations are equivalent in a simple …
We present an alternative field theoretical approach to the definition of conserved quantities, based directly on the field equations content of a Lagrangian theory (in the standard framework of the Calculus of Variations in jet bundles). The contraction of the Euler-Lagrange equations with Lie derivatives of the dynamical fields allows one to derive a variational Lagrangian for any given set of Lagrangian equations. A two steps algorithmical procedure can be thence applied to the variational Lagrangian in order to produce a general expression for the variation of all quantities which are (cov…
Graded bundles are a class of graded manifolds which represent a natural generalisation of vector bundles and include the higher order tangent bundles as canonical examples. We present and study the concept of the linearisation of graded bundle which allows us to define the notion of the linear dual of a graded bundle. They are examples of double structures, graded-linear ($\mathcal{GL}$) bundles, including double vector bundles as a particular case. On $\mathcal{GL}$-bundles we define what we shall call weighted algebroids, which are to be understood as algebroids in the category of graded bu…
We consider the Lagrangian formulation with duplicated variables of dissipative mechanical systems. The application of Noether theorem leads to physical observable quantities which are not conserved, like energy and angular momentum, and conserved quantities like the Hamiltonian, that generate symmetry transformations and do not correspond to observables. We show that there are simple relations among the equations satisfied by these two types of quantities. In the case of the damped harmonic oscillator, from the quantities obtained by Noether theorem follows the algebra of Feshbach and Tikochi…
The purpose of this paper is to describe geometrically discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie groupoids. From a variational principle we derive the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations and we introduce a symplectic 2-section, which is preserved by the Lagrange evolution operator. In terms of the discrete Legendre transformations we define the Hamiltonian evolution operator which is a symplectic map with respect to the canonical symplectic 2-section on the prolongation of the dual of the Lie algebroid of the given groupoid. The equations we get include as particular cases the classic…
This letter investigates the Lie point symmetries and conserved quantities of the Lagrangian systems on time scales, which unify the Lie symmetries of the two cases for the continuous and the discrete Lagrangian systems. By defining the infinitesimal transformations' generators and using the invariance of differential equations under infinitesimal transformations, the determining equations of the Lie symmetries on time scales are established. Then the structure equations and the form of conserved quantities with delta derivatives are obtained. The letter also gives brief discussion on the Lie …
Recently we found that canonical gauge-natural superpotentials are obtained as global sections of the {\em reduced} $(n-2)$-degree and $(2s-1)$-order quotient sheaf on the fibered manifold $\bY_{\zet} \times_{\bX} \mathfrak{K}$, where $\mathfrak{K}$ is an appropriate subbundle of the vector bundle of (prolongations of) infinitesimal right-invariant automorphisms $\barΞ$. In this paper, we provide an alternative proof of the fact that the naturality property $\cL_{j_{s}\barΞ_{H}}ω(λ, \mathfrak{K})=0$ holds true for the {\em new} Lagrangian $ω(λ, \mathfrak{K})$ obtained contracting the Euler--La…
A general, consistent and complete framework for geometrical formulation of mechanical systems is proposed, based on certain structures on affine bundles (affgebroids) that generalize Lie algebras and Lie algebroids. This scheme covers and unifies various geometrical approaches to mechanics in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian pictures, including time-dependent lagrangians and hamiltonians. In our approach, lagrangians and hamiltonians are, in general, sections of certain $\R$-principal bundles, and the solutions of analogs of Euler-Lagrange equations are curves in certain affine bundles. The cor…
A Dirac structure is a Lagrangian subbundle of a Courant algebroid, $L\subset\mathbb{E}$, which is involutive with respect to the Courant bracket. In particular, $L$ inherits the structure of a Lie algebroid. In this paper, we introduce the more general notion of a pseudo-Dirac structure: an arbitrary subbundle, $W\subset\mathbb{E}$, together with a pseudo-connection on its sections, satisfying a natural integrability condition. As a consequence of the definition, $W$ will be a Lie algebroid. Allowing non-isotropic subbundles of $\mathbb{E}$ incorporates non-skew tensors and connections into D…
For classical relativistic field theory in Minkowski space-time, the addition of a superpotential term to a conserved current density is trivial in the sense that it does not modify the local conservation law nor change the conserved charge, though it may allow us to obtain a current density with some improved properties. The addition of a total derivative term to a Lagrangian density is also trivial in the sense that it does not modify the equations of motion of the theory. These facts suggest that both operations are related and possibly equivalent to each other for any global symmetry of an…
We address some new issues concerning spontaneous symmetry breaking. We define classical Higgs fields for gauge-natural invariant Yang--Mills type Lagrangian field theories through the requirement of the existence of {\em canonical} covariant gauge-natural conserved quantities. As an illustrative example we consider the `gluon Lagrangian', i.e. a Yang--Mills Lagrangian on the $(1,1)$-order gauge-natural bundle of $SU(3)$-principal connections, and canonically define a `gluon' classical Higgs field through the split reductive structure induced by the kernel of the associated gauge-natural Jacob…
Expressing the Schroedinger Lagrangian ${\cal L}$ in terms of the quantum wavefunction $ψ=\exp(S+{\rm i}I)$ yields the conserved Noether current ${\bf J}=\exp(2S)\nabla I$. When $ψ$ is a stationary state, the divergence of ${\bf J}$ vanishes. One can exchange $S$ with $I$ to obtain a new Lagrangian $\tilde{\cal L}$ and a new Noether current $\tilde{\bf J}=\exp(2I)\nabla S$, conserved under the equations of motion of $\tilde{\cal L}$. However this new current $\tilde{\bf J}$ is generally not conserved under the equations of motion of the original Lagrangian ${\cal L}$. We analyse the role playe…
In this paper we demonstrate how the Legendre transform connects the statements of Noether's theorem in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. We give precise definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian frameworks and discuss why these notions in the Hamiltonian framework are somewhat less rigid. We explore conditions which, when put on these definitions, allow the Legendre transform to set up a one-to-one correspondence between them. We also discuss how to preserve this correspondence when the definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities are …
The variational Lie derivative of classes of forms in the Krupka's variational sequence is defined as a variational Cartan formula at any degree, in particular for degrees lesser than the dimension of the basis manifold. As an example of application we determine the condition for a Noether--Bessel-Hagen current, associated with a generalized symmetry, to be variationally equivalent to a Noether current for an invariant Lagrangian. We show that, if it exists, this Noether current is exact on-shell and generates a canonical conserved quantity.
In this paper we give a simple proof that when the particle number is conserved, the Lagrangian of a barotropic perfect fluid is $\mathcal{L}_m=-ρ[c^2 +\int P(ρ)/ρ^2 dρ]$, where $ρ$ is the \textit{rest mass} density and $P(ρ)$ is the pressure. To prove this result nor additional fields neither Lagrange multipliers are needed. Besides, the result is applicable to a wide range of theories of gravitation. The only assumptions used in the derivation are: 1) the matter part of the Lagrangian does not depend on the derivatives of the metric, and 2) the particle number of the fluid is conserved ($\na…
The first and second Noether theorems are formulated in a general case of reducible degenerate Grassmann-graded Lagrangian theory of even and odd variables on graded bundles. Such Lagrangian theory is characterized by a hierarchy of non-trivial higher-stage Noether identities and the corresponding higher-stage gauge symmetries which are described in the homology terms. In these terms, the second Noether theorems associate to the Koszul - Tate chain complex of higher-stage Noether identities the gauge cochain sequence whose ascent operator provides higher-order gauge symmetries of Lagrangian th…
We study differential systems for which it is possible to establish a correspondence between symmetries and conservation laws based on Noether identity: quasi-Noether systems. We analyze Noether identity and show that it leads to the same conservation laws as Lagrange (Green-Lagrange) identity. We discuss quasi-Noether systems, and some of their properties, and generate classes of quasi-Noether differential equations of the second order. We next introduce a more general version of quasi-Lagrangians which allows us to extend Noether theorem. Here, variational symmetries are only sub-symmetries,…
The relation between symmetries and conservation laws for solitons in a ferromagnet is complicated by the presence of gyroscopic (precessional) forces, whose description in the Lagrangian framework involves a background gauge field. This makes canonical momenta gauge-dependent and requires a careful application of Noether's theorem. We show that Cartan's theory of differential forms is a natural language for this task. We use it to derive conserved momenta of the Belavin--Polyakov skyrmion, whose symmetries include translation, global spin rotation, and dilation.
A Lagrangian formalism for variational second-order delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) is developed. The Noether operator identity for a DODE is established, which relates the invariance of a Lagrangian function with the appropriate variational equations and the conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate Noether-type theorems that give the first integrals for DODE with symmetries. Relations between the invariance of the variational second-order DODEs and the invariance of the Lagrangian functions are also analyzed. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.
Noether theorem establishes an interesting connection between symmetries of the action integral and conservation laws of a dynamical system. The aim of the present work is to classify the damped harmonic oscillator problem with respect to Noether symmetries and to construct corresponding conservation laws for all over-damped, under damped and critical damped cases. For each case we obtain maximum five linearly independent group generators which provide related five conserved quantities. Remarkably, after obtaining complete set of invariant quantities we obtain analytical solutions for each cas…
