The central kpc of the Milky Way might be expected to differ significantly from the rest of the Galaxy with regard to gas dynamics and the formation of YSOs. We probe this possibility with mid-infrared observations obtained with IRAC and MIPS on Spitzer and with MSX. We use color-color diagrams and SED fits to explore the nature of YSO candidates (including objects with 4.5 micron excesses possibly due to molecular emission). There is an asymmetry in the distribution of the candidate YSOs, which tend to be found at negative Galactic longitudes; this behavior contrasts with that of the molecular gas, approximately 2/3 of which is at positive longitudes. The small scale height of these objects suggests that they are within the Galactic center region and are dynamically young. They lie between two layers of infrared dark clouds and may have originated from these clouds. We identify new sites for this recent star formation. The methanol masers appear to be associated with young, embedded YSOs characterized by 4.5 micron excesses. We use the SEDs of these sources to estimate their physical characteristics. Within the central 400x50 pc (|l|<1.3\degr and |b|<10') the star formation rate based on the identification of Stage I evolutionary phase of YSO candidates is about 0.14 solar mass/yr. We suggest that a recent burst of star formation took place within the last 10^5 years. This suggestion is also consistent with estimates of star formation rates within the last ~10^7 years showing a peak around 10^5 years ago. Lastly, we find that the Schmidt-Kennicutt Law applies well in the central 400 pc of the Galaxy. This implies that star formation does not appear to be dramatically affected by the extreme physical conditions in the Galactic center region.
We present a detailed statistical study of massive star formation in the environment of 322 Spitzer mid-infrared bubbles by using the RMS survey for massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). Using a combination of simple surface density plots and a more sophisticated angular cross-correlation function analysis we show that there is a statistically significant overdensity of RMS YSOs towards the bubbles. There is a clear peak in the surface density and angular cross-correlation function of YSOs projected against the rim of the bubbles. By investigating the autocorrelation function of the RMS YSOs w…
Near-infrared H- and K-band spectra are presented for 247 objects, selected from the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey as potential young stellar objects (YSOs). 195 (~80%) of the targets are YSOs, of which 131 are massive YSOs (L_BOL > 5x10^3 L_solar), M > 8M_solar. This is the largest spectroscopic study of massive YSOs to date, providing a valuable resource for the study of massive star formation. In this paper we present our exploratory analysis of the data. The YSOs observed have a wide range of embeddedness (2.7 < A_V < 114), demonstrating that this study covers minimally obscured objects righ…

The Magellanic Bridge is the nearest low-metallicity, tidally stripped environment, offering a unique high-resolution view of physical conditions in merging and forming galaxies. In this paper we present analysis of candidate massive young stellar objects (YSOs), i.e., {\it in situ, current} massive star formation (MSF) in the Bridge using {\it Spitzer} mid-IR and complementary optical and near-IR photometry. While we definitely find YSOs in the Bridge, the most massive are $\sim10 M_\odot$, $\ll45 M_\odot$ found in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The intensity of MSF in the Bridge also appe…
Massive young stellar objects (YSOs), like low-mass YSOs, are thought to be surrounded by optically thick envelopes and/or discs and are observed to have associated regions that produce polarized light at near-infrared wavelengths. These polarized regions are thought to be lower-density outflows along the polar axes of the YSO envelopes. Using the 0.2 arcsec spatial resolution of the Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope we are examining the structure of the envelopes and outflow regions of massive YSOs in star-forming regions within a few kpc of the …
We present a supervised machine learning methodology to classify stellar populations in the Local Group dwarf-irregular galaxy NGC6822. Near-IR colours (J-H, H-K, and J-K), K-band magnitudes and far-IR surface brightness (at 70 and 160 micron) measured from Spitzer and Herschel images are the features used to train a Probabilistic Random Forest (PRF) classifier. Point-sources are classified into eight target classes: young stellar objects (YSOs), oxygen- and carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars, red giant branch and red super-giant stars, active galactic nuclei, massive main-sequence star…
Massive stars are rarely seen to form in isolation. It has been proposed that association with companions or clusters in the formative stages is vital to their mass accumulation. In this paper we study IRAS~18144-1723, a massive young stellar object (YSO) which had been perceived in early studies as a single source. In the CO(3-2) line, we detect an outflow aligned well with the outflow seen in H$_2$ in this region. We show that there are at least two YSOs here, and that the outflow is most likely to be from a deeply embedded source detected in our infrared imaging. Using multi-wavelength obse…
Spitzer View of Young Massive Stars in the LMC HII Complex N44
The G333 giant molecular cloud contains a few star clusters and H II regions, plus a number of condensations currently forming stars. We have mapped 13 of these sources with the appearance of young stellar objects (YSOs) with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph in the SL, SH, and LH modules (5-36 micron). We use these spectra plus available photometry and images to characterize the YSOs. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all sources peak between 35 and 110 micron, thereby showing their young age. The objects are divided into two groups: YSOs associated with extended emission in IRAC ba…
Through analysis of archival images and photometry from the Spitzer GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL surveys combined with 2MASS and MSX data, we have identified 488 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in the giant molecular cloud M17 SWex, which extends ~50 pc southwest from the prominent Galactic H II region M17. Our sample includes >200 YSOs with masses >3 Msun that will become B-type stars on the main sequence. Extrapolating over the stellar initial mass function (IMF), we find that M17 SWex contains >1.3x10^4 young stars, representing a proto-OB association. The YSO mass function is significantly s…
We present the {\it Spitzer}-IRAC images of the S235 star forming complex that includes the East~1 & 2, Central and S235 A & B regions. In addition, we present the near-infrared images of the S235 A & B regions. The IRAC photometry reveals on-going star formation, with 86 Class 0/I and 144 Class II YSOs in the entire S235 complex. Nearly 73% of these YSOs are present in clusters with a maximum surface density of 120 YSOs/pc$^{2}$ (in the vicinity of S235A & B regions). A few YSOs, possibly in an arc-like formation, are identified towards the south of S235A region, which may be speculated as an…
We present initial results from a population synthesis model aimed at determining the star formation rate of the Milky-Way. We find that a total star formation rate of 0.68 to 1.45 Msun/yr is able to reproduce the observed number of young stellar objects in the Spitzer/IRAC GLIMPSE survey of the Galactic plane, assuming simple prescriptions for the 3D Galactic distributions of YSOs and interstellar dust, and using model SEDs to predict the brightness and color of the synthetic YSOs at different wavelengths. This is the first Galaxy-wide measurement derived from pre-main-sequence objects themse…
We present multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) H$_2$O maser observations toward the massive young stellar objects (YSOs) VLA 2 and VLA 3 in the star-forming region AFGL 2591. Through these observations, we have extended the study of the evolution of the masers towards these objects up to a time span of $\sim$ 10 yrs, measuring their radial velocities and proper motions. The H$_2$O masers in VLA 3, the most massive YSO in AFGL 2591 ($\sim$ 30--40~M$_{\odot}$), are grouped within projected distances of $\lesssim$ 40 mas ($\lesssim$ 130 AU) from VLA 3. In contrast to other H$_2$O masers i…
An important tracer of the origin and evolution of cometary ices is the comparison with ices found in dense clouds and towards Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We present a survey of ices in the 2-5 micron spectra of 23 massive YSOs, taken with the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility SpeX spectrometer. The 4.90 micron absorption band of OCS ice is detected in 20 sight-lines, more than five times the previously known detections. The absorption profile shows little variation and is consistent with OCS being embedded in CH3OH-rich ices, or proton-irradiated H$_2$S or SO$_2$-containing ices. The OCS col…
We present a spectroscopic follow-up of photometrically-selected young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the Central Molecular Zone of the Galactic center. Our goal is to quantify the contamination of this YSO sample by reddened giant stars with circumstellar envelopes and to determine the star formation rate in the CMZ. We obtained KMOS low-resolution near-infrared spectra (R ~4000) between 2.0 and 2.5 um of sources, many of them previously identified, by mid-infrared photometric criteria, as massive YSOs in the Galactic center. Our final sample consists of 91 stars with good signal-to-noise…
G79.3+0.3 is an infrared dark cloud in the Cygnus-X complex that is home to massive deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). We have produced a submillimeter array (SMA) 1.3 mm continuum image and $^{12}$CO line maps of the eastern section of G79.3+0.3 in which we detect five separate YSOs. We have estimated physical parameters for these five YSOs and others in the vicinity of G79.3+0.3 by fitting existing photometry from Spitzer, Herschel, and ground-based telescopes to spectral energy distribution models. Through these model fits we find that the most massive YSOs seen in the SMA 1.3mm …
Our goal is to take an inventory of complex molecules in three well-known high-mass protostars for which disks or toroids have been claimed and to study the similarities and differences with a sample of massive YSOs without evidence of such flattened disk-like structures. With a disk-like geometry, UV radiation can escape more readily and potentially affect the ice and gas chemistry on hot-core scales. A partial submillimeter line survey, targeting CH3OH, H2CO, C2H5OH, HCOOCH3, CH3OCH3, CH3CN, HNCO, NH2CHO, C2H5CN, CH2CO, HCOOH, CH3CHO, and CH3CCH, was made toward three massive YSOs with disk-…
The HII complex N159 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is used to study massive star formation in different environments, as it contains three giant molecular clouds (GMCs) that have similar sizes and masses but exhibit different intensities of star formation. We identify candidate massive young stellar objects (YSOs) using infrared photometry, and model their SEDs to constrain mass and evolutionary state. Good fits are obtained for less evolved Type I, I/II, and II sources. Our analysis suggests that there are massive embedded YSOs in N159B, a maser source, and several ultracompact HII regi…
We present the initial results of our investigation of the star-forming complex W49, one of the youngest and most luminous massive star forming regions in our Galaxy. We used Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) data to investigate massive star formation with the primary objective to locate a representative set of protostars and the clusters of young stars that are forming around them. We present our source catalog with the mosaics from the IRAC data. In this study we used a combination of IRAC, MIPS, Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and UKIRT Deep Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) data to identif…
We present $K$-band integral field spectroscopic observations towards 17 massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the low metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and two YSO candidates in the compact H ii regions N81 and N88 A (also in the SMC). These sources, originally identified using $Spitzer$ photometry and/or spectroscopy, have been resolved into 29 $K$-band continuum sources. By comparing Br$γ$ emission luminosities with those presented for a Galactic sample of massive YSOs, we find tentative evidence for increased accretion rates in the SMC. Around half of our targets exhibit emission …
Molecular outflows from high-mass young stellar objects provide an excellent way to study the star formation process, and investigate if they are scaled-up versions of their low-mass counterparts. We selected the nearby massive star forming region IRAS 17233-3606 in order to study the kinematics and physics along the molecular outflow(s) originating from this source. We observed IRAS 17233-3606 in CO, a typical tracer of gas associated with molecular outflow, with the Submillimeter Array in the (2-1) transition, and with the APEX telescope in the higher excitation (6-5) line. Additional infrar…
We present results from our spectroscopic study, using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, designed to identify massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Galactic Center (GC). Our sample of 107 YSO candidates was selected based on IRAC colors from the high spatial resolution, high sensitivity Spitzer/IRAC images in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), which spans the central ~300 pc region of the Milky Way Galaxy. We obtained IRS spectra over 5um to 35um using both high- and low-resolution IRS modules. We spectroscopically identify massive YSOs by the presence o…
Studies of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Galaxy have found that a significant fraction exhibit photometric variability. However, no systematic investigation has been conducted on the variability of extragalactic YSOs. Here we present the first variability study of massive YSOs in a $\sim 1.5\,\mathrm{deg^2}$ region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The aim is to investigate whether the different environmental conditions in the metal-poor LMC ($\sim$ 0.4-0.5 Z_sun) have an impact on the variability characteristics. Multi-epoch near-infrared (NIR) photometry was obtained from the VISTA …
We report the detection of several molecular gas-phase and ice absorption features in three photometrically-selected young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the central 280 pc of the Milky Way. Our spectra, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, reveal gas-phase absorption from CO2 (15.0um), C2H2 (13.7um) and HCN (14.0um). We attribute this absorption to warm, dense gas in massive YSOs. We also detect strong and broad 15um CO2 ice absorption features, with a remarkable double-peaked structure. The prominent long-wavelength peak is due to CH3OH-rich …
In contrast to most other galaxies, star-formation rates in the Milky Way can be estimated directly from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). In the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) the star-formation rate calculated from the number of YSOs with 24 microns emission is up to order of magnitude higher than the value estimated from methods based on diffuse emission (such as free-free emission). Whether this effect is real or whether it indicates problems with either or both star formation rate measures is not currently known. In this paper, we investigate whether estimates based on YSOs could be heavily con…
Spitzer IRAC images (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0$μ$m) and photometry of the star forming region M8 are presented. IRAC photometry reveals ongoing star formation in the M8 complex, with 64 Class 0/I and 168 Class II sources identified in several locations in the vicinity of sub-mm gas cores/clumps. Nearly 60% of these YSOs occur in about 7 small clusters. The spatial surface density of the clustered YSOs is determined to be about 10-20 YSOs/pc$^{2}$. Fresh star formation by the process of "collect and collapse" might have been triggered by the expanding HII regions and winds from massive stars. IRAC …
We present Herschel Space Observatory Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE FTS) spectroscopy of a sample of twenty massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC). We analyse the brightest far infrared (far-IR) emission lines, that diagnose the conditions of the heated gas in the YSO envelope and pinpoint their physical origin. We compare the properties of massive Magellanic and Galactic YSOs.We find that [OI] and [CII] emission, that originates from the …
We present 737 candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) near the W51 Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) over an area of 1.25 deg x 1.00 deg selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to identify YSOs and distinguish them from main-sequence or red giant stars, asymptotic giant branch stars, and background galaxies. Based on extinction of each YSO, we separate a total of 437 YSOs associated with the W51 region from the possible foreground sources. We identify 69 highly embedded Stage 0/I candidate YSOs in our field with masses > 5 Msun (corresponding to mid…
W5-E has been observed with the Herschel-PACS and -SPIRE photometers, at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 microns. The dust temperature map shows a rather uniform temperature, in the range 17.5-20 K in the dense condensations or filaments, 21-22 K in the photodissociation regions, and 24-31 K in the direction of the ionized regions. The column densities are rather low, everywhere lower than 10^23 cm-2, and of the order of a few 10^21 cm-2 in the PDRs. About 8000 solar masses of neutral material surrounds the ionized region, which is low with respect to the volume of this HII region; we suggest that…
We present images and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in three star-forming H II regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud: N159A, N159 Papillon, and N160. We use photometry from SOFIA/FORCAST at 25.3--37.1 um to constrain model fits to the SEDs and determine luminosities, ages, and dust content of the embedded YSOs and their local environments. By placing these sources on mid-infrared color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, we analyze their dust properties and consider their evolutionary status. Since each object in the FORCAST images has an obvious …
We present medium-resolution (R $\sim$ 4000) YJ, H \& K band spectroscopy of candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in NGC~346, the most active star-formation region in the metal-poor (Z = 1/5 Z$_{\sun}$) Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra were obtained with the KMOS (K-Band Multi Object Spectrograph) integral field instrument on the Very Large Telescope. From our initial sample of 18 candidate high-mass YSOs previously identified from mid-IR photometry and radiative transfer model fits to their spectral energy distributions, approximately half were resolved into multiple components by our in…
We present multi-wavelength analysis around mid-infrared bubble N14 to probe the signature of triggered star formation as well as the formation of new massive star(s) and/or cluster(s) on the borders of the bubble by the expansion of the H II region. Spitzer-IRAC ratio maps reveal that the bubble is traced by the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission following an almost circular morphology except in the south-west direction towards the low molecular density environment. The observational signatures of the collected molecular and cold dust material have been found around the bubble. We have …
To probe the star formation (SF) process, we present a multi-wavelength study of IRAS 05480+2545 (hereafter I05480+2545). Analysis of Herschel data reveals a massive clump (M_clump ~ 1875 Msun; peak N(H_2) ~ 4.8 x 10^{22} cm^{-2}; A_V ~ 51 mag) containing the 6.7 GHz methanol maser and I05480+2545, which is also depicted in a temperature range of 18-26 K. Several noticeable parsec-scale filaments are detected in the Herschel 250 microns image and seem to be radially directed to the massive clump. It resembles more of a "hub-filament" system. Deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) have be…
With an unprecedented astrometric and photometric data precision, Gaia EDR3 gives us, for the first time, the opportunity to systematically detect and map in the optical bands, the low mass populations of the star forming regions (SFRs) in the Milky Way. We provide a catalogue of the Gaia EDR3 data (photometry, proper motions and parallaxes) of the young stellar objects (YSOs) identified in the Galactic Plane (|b|<30 deg) within about 1.5 kpc. The catalogue of the SFRs to which they belong is also provided to study the properties of the very young clusters and put them in the context of the Ga…
Ever since their discovery, Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are generally considered to be the sites just at the onset of high-mass (HM) star formation. In recent years, it has been realized that not all IRDCs harbour HM Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). Only those IRDCs satisfying a certain mass-size criterion, or equivalently above a certain threshold density, are found to contain HMYSOs. In all cases, IRDCs provide ideal conditions for the formation of stellar clusters. In this paper, we study the massive stellar content of IRDCs to re-address the relation between IRDCs and HM star formation. For …
Aims. To demonstrate that `INDICATE' is a powerful spatial analysis tool which when combined with kinematic data from Gaia DR2 can be used to robustly probe star formation history. Methods. We compared the dynamic & spatial distributions of young stellar objects (YSOs) at various evolutionary stages in NGC 2264 using Gaia DR2 proper motion data and INDICATE. Results. The dynamic & spatial behaviours of YSOs at different evolutionary stages are distinct. Dynamically, Class II YSOs predominately have non-random trajectories that are consistent with known substructures, whereas Class III YSOs hav…
There is growing evidence for disk-mediated accretion being the dominant mode of star formation across nearly the whole stellar mass spectrum. The stochastic nature of this process has been realized which implies an inherent source variability. It can be traced more easily for low-mass YSOs (LMYSOs) since high-mass YSOs (HMYSOs) are still embedded even when reaching the ZAMS. While variable reflection nebulae around LMYSOs were among the earliest signs of star formation, little is known on the variability of scattered light from embedded clusters, the birthplaces of HMYSOs. Since the few most …
We present a multi-scale and multi-wavelength study to investigate the star formation process around IRAS 17599$-$2148 that is part of an elongated filamentary structure (EFS) (extension $\sim$21 pc) seen in the {\it Herschel} maps. Using the {\it Herschel} data analysis, at least six massive clumps (M$_{clump}$ $\sim$777 -- 7024 M$_{\odot}$) are found in the EFS with a range of temperature and column density of $\sim$16--39~K and $\sim$0.6--11~$\times$~10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (A$_{V}$ $\sim$7--117 mag), respectively. The EFS hosts cold gas regions (i.e. infrared dark cloud) without any radio dete…
Mid-infrared (MIR) shells or bubbles around expanding H II regions have received much attention due to their ability to initiate a new generation of star formation. We present multi-wavelength observations around two bubbles associated with a southern massive star-forming (MSF) region G8.14+0.23, to investigate the triggered star formation signature on the edges of the bubbles by the expansion of the H II region. We have found observational signatures of the collected molecular and cold dust material along the bubbles and the 12CO(J=3-2) velocity map reveals that the molecular gas in the bubbl…
We present the results of our investigation of the star-forming complexes W51 and W43, two of the brightest in the first Galactic quadrant. In order to determine the young stellar object (YSO) populations in W51 and W43 we used color-magnitude relations based on Spitzer mid-infrared and 2MASS/UKIDSS near-infrared data. We identified 302 Class I YSOs and 1178 Class II/transition disk candidates in W51, and 917 Class I YSOs and 5187 Class II/transition disk candidates in W43. We also identified tens of groups of YSOs in both regions using the Minimal Spanning Tree (MST) method. We found similar …
We present {\it Spitzer} IRAC mid-infrared photometry on the massive star forming region AFGL 437 (IRAS 03035+5819). From the IRAC colour-colour diagram, we identify several new embedded YSOs within 64 arcsec of the central compact cluster. Using the IRAC ratio images, we investigate the molecular outflows associated with the highly embedded young stellar object WK34 in the central cluster. We attribute the lobes seen (extended to $\sim$ 0.16 pc in the north) in the ratio map to shocked molecular hydrogen emission. IRAC images reveal a large diffuse nebulosity associated with the central clust…
The aim of this study is to understand the chemical conditions of ices around embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We performed near-infrared (2.5-5 micron) spectroscopic observations toward 12 massive embedded YSOs and their candidates in the LMC using the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. We estimated the column densities of the H2O, CO2, and CO ices based on their 3.05, 4.27, and 4.67 micron absorption features, and we investigated the correlation between ice abundances and physical properties of YSOs.The ice absorption features of H2O, CO…
Because of its nearness to Earth, the centre of the Milky Way is the only galaxy nucleus in which we can study the characteristics, distribution, kinematics, and dynamics of the stars on milli-parsec scales. We have accurate and precise measurements of the Galactic centre's central black hole, Sagittarius A*, and can study its interaction with the surrounding nuclear star cluster in detail. This contribution aims at providing a concise overview of our current knowledge about the Milky Way's central black hole and nuclear star cluster, at highlighting the observational challenges and limitation…
By means of different physical mechanisms, the expansion of HII regions can promote the formation of new stars of all masses. RCW 120 is a nearby Galactic HII region where triggered star formation occurs. This region is well-studied - there being a wealth of existing data - and is nearby. However, it is surrounded by dense regions for which far infrared data is essential to obtain an unbiased view of the star formation process and in particular to establish whether very young protostars are present. We attempt to identify all Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), especially those previously undetected…
To probe the ongoing physical mechanism, we studied a wide-scale environment around AFGL 5142 (area ~25 pc x 20 pc) using a multi-wavelength approach. The Herschel column density (N(H_2)) map reveals a massive inverted Y-like structure (mass ~6280 M_sun), which hosts a pair of elongated filaments (lengths >10 pc). The Herschel temperature map depicts the filaments in a temperature range of ~12.5-13.5 K. These elongated filaments overlap each other at several places, where N(H_2) > 4.5 x 10^{21}cm^{-2}. The 12CO and 13CO line data also show two elongated cloud components (around -1.5 and -4.5 k…
We present the results of high spatial resolution HCO$^{+}$($1-0$) and HCN($1-0$) observations of N55 south region (N55-S) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). N55-S is a relatively less extreme star-forming region of the LMC characterized by a low radiation field. We carried out a detailed analysis of the molecular emission to investigate the relation between dense molecular clumps and star formation in the quiescent environment of N55-S. We detect ten molecular clumps with significant HCO$^{+}(1-0)$ emission and eight wit…
We observationally investigate star formation (SF) process occurring in AFGL 5157 (area ~13.5 pc X 13.5 pc) using a multi-wavelength approach. Embedded filaments are seen in the {\it Herschel} column density map, and one of them is identified as an elongated filamentary feature (FF) (length ~8.3 pc; mass ~1170 Msun). Five Herschel clumps (Mclump ~45-300 Msun) are traced in the central part of FF, where an extended temperature structure (Td ~13.5-26.5 K) is observed. In the direction of the central part of FF, the warmer region at Td ~20-26.5 K spatially coincides with a mid-infrared (MIR) shel…
The first detection of the C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) molecule in massive embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) is reported. Observations with Spitzer IRS reveal the presence of C60 in YSOs ISOGAL-P J174639.6-284126 and SSTGC 372630 in the Central Molecular Zone in the Galactic centre, and in a YSO candidate, 2MASS J06314796+0419381, in the Rosette nebula. The first detection of C60 in a Herbig Ae/Be star, HD 97300, is also reported. These observations extend the range of astrophysical environments in which C60 is found to YSOs and a pre-main sequence star. C60 excitation and formation mechani…
Observations suggest that there is a significant fraction of O-stars in the field of the Milky Way that appear to have formed in isolation or in low mass clusters ($<$100 $M_\odot$). The existence of these high-mass stars that apparently formed in the field challenges the generally accepted paradigm, which requires star formation to occur in clustered environments. In order to understand the physical conditions for the formation of these stars, it is necessary to observe isolated high-mass stars while they are still forming. With the $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$, we observe the seven most isol…
We investigate the relation between star formation rate (SFR) and gas surface densities in Galactic star forming regions using a sample of YSOs and massive clumps. Our YSO sample consists of objects located in 20 molecular clouds from the Spitzer cores to disks and Gould's Belt surveys. We estimate the gas surface density (Sigma_gas) from Av maps and YSO SFR surface densities (Sigma_SFR) from the number of YSOs, assuming a mean mass and lifetime. We also divide the clouds into contour levels of Av, counting only the youngest Class I and Flat SED YSOs. For a sample of massive star forming clump…
Stars form in clustered environments, but how they form when the available resources are shared is still not well understood. A related question is whether the IMF is in fact universal across galactic environments, a galactic initial mass function (IGIMF), or whether it is an average of local IMFs. One of the long-standing problems in resolving this question and in the study of young clusters is observational: the emission from multiple sources is frequently seen as blended because at different wavelengths or with different telescopes the beam sizes are different. The confusion hinders our abi…
The Milky Way Project citizen science initiative recently increased the number of known infrared bubbles in the inner Galactic plane by an order of magnitude compared to previous studies. We present a detailed statistical analysis of this dataset with the Red MSX Source catalog of massive young stellar sources to investigate the association of these bubbles with massive star formation. We particularly address the question of massive triggered star formation near infrared bubbles. We find a strong positional correlation of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and H II regions with Milky Way Pr…
