High-resolution (R ~ 100 000), high signal-to-noise spectra of M71 giants have been obtained with HIRES at the KeckI Telescope in order to measure their Mg isotopic ratios, as well as elemental abundances of C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Ni, Zr and La. We demonstrate that M71 has two populations, the first having weak CN, normal O, Na, Mg, and Al, and a low ratio of 26Mg/Mg (~4%) consistent with models of galactic chemical evolution with no contribution from AGB stars. The Galactic halo could have been formed from the dissolution of globular clusters prior to their intermediate mass stars reaching the AGB. The second population has enhanced Na and Al accompanied by lower O and by higher 26Mg/Mg (~8%), consistent with models which do incorporate ejecta from AGB stars via normal stellar winds. All the M71 giants have identical [Fe/H], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], [Ti/Fe] and [Ni/Fe] to within sigma = 0.04 dex (10%). We therefore infer that the timescale for formation of the first generation of stars we see today in this globular cluster must be sufficiently short to avoid a contribution from AGB stars, i.e. less than ~0.3Gyr. Furthermore, the Mg isotopic ratios in the second M71 population, combined with their elemental abundances for the light elements, demonstrate that the difference must be the result of adding in the ejecta of intermediate mass AGB stars. Finally we suggest that the low amplitude of the abundance variations of the light elements within M71 is due to a combination of its low mass and its relatively high Fe-metallicity.
We obtained high-resolution near-IR spectra of 45 AGB stars located in the Galactic bulge. The aim of the project is to determine key elemental abundances in these stars to help constrain the formation history of the bulge. A further aim is to link the photospheric abundances to the dust species found in the winds of the stars. Here we present a progress report of the analysis of the spectra.
We report the Sr and Ba isotopic compositions of 18 presolar SiC grains of types Y (11) and Z (7), rare types commonly argued to have formed in lower-than-solar metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We find that the Y and Z grains show higher 88Sr/87Sr and more variable 138Ba/136Ba ratios than mainstream (MS) grains. According to FRANEC Torino AGB models, the Si, Sr, and Ba isotopic compositions of our Y and Z grains can be consistently explained if the grains came from low mass AGB stars with 0.15 Zsun <= Z < 1.00 Zsun, in which the 13C neutron exposure for the slow neutron-capture…
Elemental and isotopic abundances are the fossils of galactic archaeology. The observed [X/Fe]-[Fe/H] relations in the Galactic bulge and disk and the mass-metallicity relation of galaxies are roughly reproduced with chemodynamical simulations of galaxies under the standard Λ-CDM picture and standard stellar physics. The isotopic ratios such as ^{17,18}O and ^{25,26}Mg may require a refinement of modelling of supernova and asymptotic giant branch stars. The recent observation of the Carbon-rich damped Lyman αsystem can be reproduced only with faint core-collapse supernovae. This suggests that …
All stellar evolution models for nucleosynthesis require an initial isotopic abundance set to use as a starting point. Generally, our knowledge of isotopic abundances of stars is fairly incomplete except for the Solar System. We present a first model for a complete average isotopic decomposition as a function of metallicity. Our model is based on the underlying nuclear astrophysics processes, and is fitted to observational data, rather than traditional forward galactic chemical evolution modeling which integrates stellar yields beginning from big bang nucleosynthesis. We first decompose the is…
Presolar grains in meteorites formed in a sample of AGB stars that ended their lives within ~1 Gyr of the origin of the Solar System 4.6 Gyr ago. The O-isotopic compositions of presolar O-rich stardust reflect the masses and metallicities of their parent stars. We present simple Monte Carlo simulations of the parent AGB stars of presolar grains. Comparison of model predictions with the grain data allow some broad conclusions to be drawn: 1) Presolar O-rich grains formed in AGB stars of mass ~1.15 - 2.2 MSun. The upper-mass cutoff reflects dredge-up of C in more massive AGB stars, leading to C-…
Stellar evolution models require initial isotopic abundance sets as input, but these abundances are incomplete outside the solar neighborhood, are challenging to infer from elemental observations, and are galaxy specific. Compositions different from the Milky Way (MW) have distinct chemical histories and are important to explore. We present an isotopic history model for the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) based on astrophysical processes, using a complementary approach to GCE models, which can estimate isotopic abundances for future nucleosynthesis studies. We approximated the isotopic…
We present new theoretical stellar yields and surface abundances for three grids of metal-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models. Post-processing nucleosynthesis results are presented for stellar models with initial masses between 1$M_{\odot}$ and 7.5$M_{\odot}$ for $Z=0.007$, and 1$M_{\odot}$ and 8$M_{\odot}$ for $Z=0.014$ (solar) and $Z=0.03$. We include stellar surface abundances as a function of thermal pulse on the AGB for elements from C to Bi and for a selection of isotopic ratios for elements up to Fe and Ni (e.g., $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C), which can be obtained from observations of molec…
A millimeter molecular line survey of three carbon-rich AGB stars and two oxygen-rich planetary nebulae has been carried out over the frequency range 80.5-115.5 GHz. Sixty eight different transitions were detected in the data from 27 different molecular species. The hyperfine structure of C2H and C13CH has been fitted to constrain the optical depth of their transitions. All other transitions have been constrained on the basis of their line profile shapes. Rotation temperatures and column densities have been calculated for all possible species, with adaptations to the methods applied in order t…

Spectroscopic studies have demonstrated that nearly all Galactic globular clusters (GCs) harbour multiple stellar populations with different chemical compositions. Moreover, colour-magnitude diagrams based exclusively on Strömgrem photometry have allowed us to identify and characterise multiple populations along the RGB of a large number of clusters. In this paper we show for the first time that Strömgren photometry is also very effcient at identifying multiple populations along the AGB, and demonstrate that the AGB of M3, M92, NGC362, NGC1851, and NGC6752 are not consistent with a single stel…
We investigated the physical and chemical properties of the gas and dust components in a carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) IC2165 using two-dimensional (2-D) emission-line maps with superior resolution. The extinction map is generated in a self-consistent and assumption-free manner. The circumstellar gas-to-dust mass ratio (GDR) map ranges radially from 1210 in the central nebula filled with hot gas plasma to 120 near the ionisation front. The determined GDR is comparable to ~400, which is commonly adopted for carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and ~100 for ISM. Except for the in…
Context: This paper is part of a larger project in which we study the chemical abundances of extra-galactic post-AGB stars with the ultimate goal of improving our knowledge of the poorly understood AGB third dredge-up mixing processes and s-process nucleosynthesis. Aims: In this paper, we study two carefully selected post-AGB stars in the LMC. The combination of favourable atmospheric parameters for detailed abundance studies and their known distances make these objects ideal probes of the internal AGB third dredge-up and s-process nucleosynthesis in that they provide observational constraints…
The Galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 has raised much interest since HST photometry revealed that it hosts a double subgiant branch. Here we report on our homogeneous study into the cyanogen (CN) bandstrengths in the RGB population (17 stars) and AGB population (21 stars) using AAOmega/2dF spectra with R $\sim 3000$. We discover that NGC 1851 hosts a quadrimodal distribution of CN bandstrengths in its RGB and AGB populations. This result supports the merger formation scenario proposed for this cluster, such that the CN quadrimodality could be explained by the superposition of two `normal' bim…
We observed the J = 9-8 and 16-15 rotational transitions of the normal species and five 13C isotopologues of HC5N to study its formation mechanisms toward the cyanopolyyne peak in Taurus Molecular Cloud-1, with the 45-m radio telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory. We detected the five 13C isotopologues with high signal-to-noise ratios between 12 and 20, as well as the normal species. The abundance ratios of the five 13C isotopologues of HC5N are found to be 1.00:0.97:1.03:1.05:1.16 (0.19) for [H13CCCCCN]:[HC13CCCCN]:[HCC13CCCN]:[HCCC13CCN]:[HCCCC13CN]. We do not find any significant differen…
We present an analysis of elemental abundances of He, N, O, Ne, S, and Ar in Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (PNe), and focus initially on 14 PNe in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We derived the abundances from a combination of deep, high dispersion optical spectra, as well as mid-infrared (IR) spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope. A detailed comparison with prior SMC PN studies shows that significant variations among authors of relative emission line flux determinations lead to systematic discrepancies in derived elemental abundances between studies that are >~0.15 dex, in spite of …
The view of globular clusters (GCs) as simple systems continues to unravel, revealing complex objects hosting multiple chemical peculiarities. Using differential abundance analysis, we probe the chemistry of the Type I GC, NGC 288 and the Type II GC, NGC 362 at the 2\% level for the first time. We measure 20 elements and find differential measurement uncertainties on the order 0.01-0.02 dex in both clusters. The smallest uncertainties are measured for Fe I in both clusters, with an average uncertainty of $\sim$0.013 dex. Dispersion in the abundances of Na, Al, Ti I, Ni, Fe I, Y, Zr, Ba and Nd …
Context. The increased sensitivity and high spectral resolution of millimeter telescopes allow the detection of an increasing number of isotopically substituted molecules in the interstellar medium. The 14N/ 15N ratio is difficult to measure directly for carbon containing molecules. Aims. We want to check the underlying hypothesis that the 13C/ 12C ratio of nitriles and isonitriles is equal to the elemental value via a chemical time dependent gas phase chemical model. Methods. We have built a chemical network containing D, 13C and 15N molecular species after a careful check of the possible fra…
We present a comprehensive abundance analysis of two newly-discovered carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars. HE2138-3336 is a s-process-rich star with [Fe/H] = -2.79, and has the highest [Pb/Fe] abundance ratio measured thus far, if NLTE corrections are included ([Pb/Fe] = +3.84). HE2258-6358, with [Fe/H] = -2.67, exhibits enrichments in both s- and r-process elements. These stars were selected from a sample of candidate metal-poor stars from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey, and followed up with medium-resolution (R ~ 2,000) spectroscopy with GEMINI/GMOS. We report here on derived abu…
We present and analyse SO and SO$_2$, recently observed with high angular resolution and sensitivity in a spectral line survey with ALMA, for two oxygen-rich AGB stars: the low mass-loss rate R Dor and high mass-loss rate IK Tau. We analyse 8 lines of SO detected towards both stars, 78 lines of SO$_2$detected towards R Dor and 52 lines of SO$_2$ detected towards IK Tau. We detect several lines of $^{34}$SO, $^{33}$SO and $^{34}$SO$_2$ towards both stars, and tentatively S$^{18}$O towards R Dor, and hence derive isotopic ratios for these species. The spatially resolved observations show us that…
W Aql is an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with an atmospheric elemental abundance ratio C/O$\approx$0.98 and reported circumstellar molecular abundances intermediate between those of M-type (C/O$<$1) and C-type (C/O$>$1) AGB stars. This intermediate status is considered typical for S-type stars, although our understanding of the chemical content of their circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) is currently rather limited. We performed observations in the frequency range 159-268 GHz with the APEX telescope and make abundance estimates through comparison to available spectra towards some well-studie…
We determine magnesium isotopic abundances of metal poor dwarf stars from the galactic halo, to shed light on the onset of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star nucleossynthesis in the galactic halo and constrain the timescale of its formation. We observed a sample of eight new halo K dwarfs in a metallicity range of -1.9 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and 4200 < $T_{eff}$(K) < 4950, using the HIRES spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (R~10^5 and 200 < S/N < 300). We obtain magnesium isotopic abundances by spectral synthesis on three MgH features and compare our results with galactic chemical evolution models.…
Context. The nitrogen isotopic ratio is considered an important diagnostic tool of the star formation process, and $N_2H^+$ is particularly important because it is directly linked to molecular nitrogen $N_2$. However, theoretical models still lack to provide an exhaustive explanation for the observed $^{14}N/^{15}N$ values. Aims. Recent theoretical works suggest that the $^{14}N/^{15}N$ behaviour is dominated by two competing reactions that destroy $ N_2H^+$: dissociative recombination and reaction with CO. When CO is depleted from the gas phase, if $N_2H^+$ recombination rate is lower with re…
CK Vul or Nova 1670 is an enigmatic eruptive object which underwent a stellar-merger event recorded by seventeenth-century observers. Its remnant was recently recovered at submillimeter wavelengths, revealing gas of an extraordinary isotopic composition indicative of past processing in the CNO cycles and partial He burning. Here, we present long-slit optical spectra of the remnant acquired with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope at an unprecedented sensitivity and spectral coverage. The spectra cover features of key elements - including H, He, C, N, and O - at ionization degrees I-III. A cl…

C-fractionation has been studied from a theoretical point of view with different models of time-dependent chemistry, including both isotope-selective photodissociation and low-temperature isotopic exchange reactions. Recent chemical models predict that the latter may lead to a depletion of $^{13}$C in nitrile-bearing species, with $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios two times higher than the elemental abundance ratio of 68 in the local ISM. Since the carbon isotopic ratio is commonly used to evaluate the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratios with the double-isotope method, it is important to study C-fractionation in …
Elemental abundances of extrinsic carbon stars provide insight into the poorly understood origin and evolution of elements in the early Galaxy. In this work, we present the results of a detailed spectroscopic analysis of four potential carbon star candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES) HE~0457$-$1805, HE~0920$-$0506, HE~1241$-$0337, and HE~1327$-$2116. This analysis is based on the high-resolution spectra obtained with Mercator/HERMES (R$\sim$86,000) and SUBARU/HDS (R$\sim$50,000). Although the abundances of a few elements, such as, Fe, C, and O are available from medium-resolution spect…
Isotopologue line intensity ratios of circumstellar molecules have been widely used to trace the photospheric elemental isotopic ratios of evolved stars. However, depending on the molecular species and the physical conditions of the environment, the circumstellar isotopologue ratio may deviate considerably from the stellar atmospheric value. In this paper, we aim to examine how the CO and HCN abundance ratios vary radially due to chemical reactions in the outflows of AGB stars and the effect of excitation and optical depth on the resulting line intensity ratios. We find that the circumstellar …
The origin of the heavily fractionated reservoir of nitrogen in comets remains an issue in the theory of their formation and hence of the solar system. Whether the fractionated reservoir traced by comets is inherited from the interstellar cloud or is the product of processes taking place in the protostar, or in the protoplanetary disk, remains unclear. So far, observations of nitrogen isotopic ratios in protostars or prestellar cores have not securely identified such a fractionated reservoir owing to the intrinsic difficulty of direct isotopic ratios measurements. In this article, we report th…
Aim: We aim to study in detail the peculiar mineralogy and structure of the circumstellar environment of two binary post-AGB stars, EPLyr and HD52961. Both stars were selected from a larger sample of evolved disc sources observed with Spitzer and show unique solid-state and gas features in their infrared spectra. Moreover, they show a very small infrared excess in comparison with the other sample stars. Methods: The different dust and gas species are identified on the basis of high-resolution Spitzer-IRS spectra. We fit the full spectrum to constrain grain sizes and temperature distributions i…
Using data from the GALAH survey, we explore the dependence of elemental abundances on stellar age and metallicity among Galactic disc stars. We find that the abundance of most elements can be predicted from age and [Fe/H] with an intrinsic scatter of about 0.03 dex. We discuss the possible causes for the existence of the abundance-age-metallicity relations. Using a stochastic chemical enrichment scheme based on the size of Supernovae remnants, we show the intrinsic scatter is expected to be small, about 0.05 dex or even smaller if there is additional mixing in the ISM. Elemental abundances sh…
We investigate the effect of helium enrichment on the evolution and nucleosynthesis of low-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of 1.7Msun and 2.36Msun with a metallicity of Z=0.0006 ([Fe/H] = -1.4). We calculate evolutionary sequences with the primordial helium abundance (Y = 0.24) and with helium-enriched compositions (Y = 0.30, 0.35, 0.40). For comparison we calculate models of the same mass but at a lower metallicity Z=0.0003 ([Fe/H] = -1.8) with Y=0.24. Post-processing nucleosynthesis calculations are performed on each of the evolutionary sequences to determine the production of eleme…
We re-evaluate the abundances of the elements in the Sun from copper ($Z=29$) to thorium ($Z=90$). Our results are mostly based on neutral and singly-ionised lines in the solar spectrum. We use the latest 3D hydrodynamic solar model atmosphere, and in a few cases also correct for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) using non-LTE (NLTE) calculations performed in 1D. In order to minimise statistical and systematic uncertainties, we make stringent line selections, employ the highest-quality observational data and carefully assess oscillator strengths, hyperfine constants and iso…
Cluster analysis of presolar silicon carbide grains based on literature data for 12C/13C, 14N/15N, δ30Si/28Si, and δ29Si/28Si including or not inferred initial 26Al/27Al data, reveals nine clusters agreeing with previously defined grain types but also highlighting new divisions. Mainstream grains reside in three clusters probably representing different parent star metallicities. One of these clusters has a compact core, with a narrow range of composition, pointing to an enhanced production of SiC grains in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with a narrow range of masses and metallicities. The…

We redetermine the abundances of all iron group nuclei in the Sun, based on neutral and singly-ionised lines of Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni in the solar spectrum. We employ a realistic 3D hydrodynamic model solar atmosphere, corrections for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE), stringent line selection procedures and high quality observational data. We have scoured the literature for the best quality oscillator strengths, hyperfine constants and isotopic separations available for our chosen lines. We find $\log ε_\mathrm{Sc}=3.16\pm0.04$, $\log ε_\mathrm{Ti}=4.93\pm0.04$, $\…
All globular clusters (GCs) studied to date show evidence for internal variation in their light element abundances. These variations have been interpreted as evidence for multiple star formation episodes within GCs, with secondary episodes fueled, at least in part, by the ejecta of AGB stars from a first generation of stars. A major puzzle emerging from this otherwise plausible scenario is that the fraction of stars associated with the second episode of star formation is observed to be much larger than expected for a standard IMF. The present work investigates this tension by modeling the obse…
