It is shown that if the universal cover of a manifold $M$ is an open manifold, then two different fibres of the spherical cotangent bundle $ST^*M$ cannot be connected by a non-negative Legendrian isotopy. This result is applied to the study of causality in globally hyperbolic spacetimes. It is also used to strengthen a result of Eliashberg, Kim, and Polterovich on the existence of a partial order on $\widetilde{\mathrm{Cont}}_0 (ST^*M)$.
It is shown that non-negative Legendrian isotopy defines a partial order on the universal cover of the Legendrian isotopy class of the fibre of the spherical cotangent bundle of any manifold. This result is applied to Lorentz geometry in the spirit of the authors' earlier work on the Legendrian Low conjecture.
Let $\{Λ^\infty_t\}$ be an isotopy of Legendrians (possibly singular) in a unit cosphere bundle $S^*M$. Let $Sh(M, Λ^\infty_t)$ be the differential graded (dg) derived category of constructible sheaves on $M$ with singular support at infinity contained in $Λ^\infty_t$. We prove that if the isotopy of Legendrians embeds into an isotopy of Weinstein hypersurfaces, then the categories $Sh(M, Λ^\infty_t)$ are invariant.
An elementary stabilization of a Legendrian link $L$ in the spherical cotangent bundle $ST^*M$ of a surface $M$ is a surgery that results in attaching a handle to $M$ along two discs away from the image in $M$ of the projection of the link $L$. A virtual Legendrian isotopy is a composition of stabilizations, destabilizations and Legendrian isotopies. In contrast to Legendrian knots, virtual Legendrian knots enjoy the property that there is a bijective correspondence between the virtual Legendrian knots and the equivalence classes of Gauss diagrams. We study virtual Legendrian isotopy classes o…
We give an $h$--principle type result for a class of Legendrian embeddings in contact manifolds of dimension at least $5$. These Legendrians, referred to as loose, have trivial pseudo-holomorphic invariants. We demonstrate they are classified up to Legendrian isotopy by their smooth isotopy class equipped with an almost complex framing. This result is inherently high dimensional: analogous results in dimension $3$ are false.
We give a combinatorial description of the Legendrian differential graded algebra associated to a Legendrian knot in PxR, where P is a punctured Riemann surface. As an application we show that for any integer k and any homology class h in H_1(PxR) there are k Legendrian knots all representing h which are pairwise smoothly isotopic through a formal Legendrian isotopy but which lie in mutually distinct Legendrian isotopy classes.
Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact $(2n+1)$-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex $n$-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to be very rich. For example, infinite families of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian $n$-spheres and $n$-tori, which are indistinguishable by means of previously known invariants, are constructed. In a sense, the definition of contact homology presented in this paper is a high dimensi…
We prove that the number of Reeb chords between a Legendrian submanifold and its contact Hamiltonian push-off is at least the sum of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Betti numbers of the submanifold, provided that the contact isotopy is sufficiently small when compared to the smallest Reeb chord on the Legendrian. Moreover, the established invariance enables us to use two different contact forms: one for the count of Reeb chords and another for the measure of the smallest length, under the assumption that there is a suitable symplectic cobordism from the latter to the former. The size of the contact isotopy…
We construct non-compact contact manifolds containing compact Legendrians which can be displaced from their Reeb flow with arbitrarily small oscillation energy. We use this to show the Shelukhin-Chekanov-Hofer pseudo-metric considered by Rosen and Zhang is degenerate on the isotopy class of the constructed Legendrians. Other aspects related to oscillation energy of Legendrian isotopies are explored.
We study Legendrian singular links up to contact isotopy. Using a special property of the singular points, we define the singular connected sum of Legendrian singular links. This concept is a generalization of the connected sum and can be interpreted as a tangle replacement, which provides a way to classify Legendrian singular links. Moreover, we investigate several phenomena only occur in the Legendrian setup.
This paper introduces two constructions of Legendrian submanifolds, called the Legendrian product and spinning, and computes their classical invariants, the Thurston-Bennequin invariant and the Maslov class, in R^{2n+1}. These constructions take two Legendrians K,L and returns a product K x L, they generalize other previous constructions in contact topology, such as frontspinning and hypercube tori, and are equivalent in R^{2n+1}. Interestingly, this construction relies upon the explicit embeddings of K,L and not their Legendrian isotopy classes.
We prove a complete classification theorem for loose Legendrian knots in an oriented 3-manifold, generalizing results of Dymara and Ding-Geiges. Our approach is to classify knots in a $3$-manifold $M$ that are transverse to a nowhere-zero vector field $V$ up to the corresponding isotopy relation. Such knots are called $V$-transverse. A framed isotopy class is simple if any two $V$-transverse knots in that class which are homotopic through $V$-transverse immersions are $V$-transverse isotopic. We show that all knot types in $M$ are simple if any one of the following three conditions hold: $1.$ …
A rigorous foundation for the contact homology of Legendrian submanifolds in a contact manifold of the form $P\times \R$ where $P$ is an exact symplectic manifold is established. The class of such contact manifolds include 1-jet spaces of smooth manifolds. As an application, contact homology is used to provide (smooth) isotopy invariants of submanifolds of $\R^n$ and, more generally, invariants of self transverse immersions into $\R^n$ up to restricted regular homotopies. When $n=3$, this application is the first step in extending and providing a contact geometric underpinning for the new knot…
We introduce a new Legendrian isotopy invariant for any closed orientable Legendrian surface $L$ embedded in a closed contact $5$-manifold $(M, ξ)$ which admits an "admissable" open book $(B, f)$ (supporting $ξ$) for $L$. We show that to any such $L$ and a fixed page $X$, one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{X}(L)$, called "Relative Maximal Page Crossing Number of $L$ with respect to $X$", which is invariant under Legendrian isotopies of $L$. We also show that one can extend this to a page-free invariant, i.e., one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{(B,f)}(L)$, called "Absolute Maximal P…
The Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebra is an algebraic invariant of Legendrian submanifolds of contact manifolds, whose definition recently has been extended to singular Legendrians. We describe a way of constructing simpler models of this dg-algebra for singular Legendrian knots in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, and give the first examples of singular knots for which the full cohomology can be computed. This includes the $A_{n}$-Legendrians. An important question in the study of the Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebra is to understand how its quasi-isomorphism type changes when the Legendrian undergoes Weinstein r…
We construct an enhanced version of knot contact homology, and show that we can deduce from it the group ring of the knot group together with the peripheral subgroup. In particular, it completely determines a knot up to smooth isotopy. The enhancement consists of the (fully noncommutative) Legendrian contact homology associated to the union of the conormal torus of the knot and a disjoint cotangent fiber sphere, along with a product on a filtered part of this homology. As a corollary, we obtain a new, holomorphic-curve proof of a result of the third author that the Legendrian isotopy class of …
We study Legendrian and transverse realizations of the negative torus knots $T_{(p,-q)}$ in all contact structures on the $3$-sphere. We give a complete classification of the strongly non-loose transverse realizations and the strongly non-loose Legendrian realizations with the Thurston-Bennequin invariant smaller than $-pq$. Additionally, we show that the strongly non-loose transverse realizations $T$ are classified by their non-zero invariants $\mathfrak T(T)$ in the minus version of the knot Floer homology. However, not all the elements of $HFK^-(T_{(p,q)})$ can be realized. Along the way, w…
In this short note we discuss high-dimensional examples of Legendrian submanifolds of the standard contact Euclidean space with an infinite number of exact Lagrangian fillings up to Hamiltonian isotopy. They are obtained from the examples of Casals and Ng by applying to them the spherical spinning construction.
We define an integer-valued non-degenerate bi-invariant metric (the discriminant metric) on the universal cover of the identity component of the contactomorphism group of any contact manifold. This metric has a very simple geometric definition, based on the notion of discriminant points of contactomorphisms. Using generating functions we prove that the discriminant metric is unbounded for the standard contact structures on R^{2n} x S^1 and RP^{2n+1}. On the other hand we also show by elementary arguments that the discriminant metric is bounded for the standard contact structures on R^{2n+1} an…
We provide in this note two relevant examples of Lagrangian cobordisms. The first one gives an example of two exact Lagrangian submanifolds which cannot be composed in an exact fashion. The second one is an example of an exact Lagrangian cobordism on which all primitive of the Liouville form is not constant on the negative end and such that the positive end is a stabilisation whereas the negative end admits augmentations. These examples emphasise point (i) of the definition of exact Lagrangian cobordisms in [6]. In order to provide such examples we construct Lagrangian immersions with single d…
We classify Legendrian unknots in overtwisted contact structures on $S^3$. In particular, we show that up to contact isotopy for every pair $(n,\pm(n-1))$ with $n>0$ there are exactly two oriented non-loose Legendrian unknots in $S^3$ with Thurston-Bennequin invariant $n$ and rotation number $\pm(n-1)$. (Only one overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ admits a non-loose unknot $K$ and the classical invariants have to be $\mathrm{tb}(K)=n$ and $\mathrm{rot}(K)=\pm(n-1)$ for $n>1$.) This can be used to prove two results attributed to Y.~Che\-kan\-ov: The first implies that the contact mapping cl…
Given an arbitrary graph $Γ$ and non-negative integers $g_v$ for each vertex $v$ of $Γ$, let $X_Γ$ be the Weinstein $4$-manifold obtained by plumbing copies of $T^*Σ_v$ according to this graph, where $Σ_v$ is a surface of genus $g_v$. We compute the wrapped Fukaya category of $X_Γ$ (with bulk parameters) using Legendrian surgery extending our previous work arXiv:1502.07922 where it was assumed that $g_v=0$ for all $v$ and $Γ$ was a tree. The resulting algebra is recognized as the (derived) multiplicative preprojective algebra (and its higher genus version) defined by Crawley-Boevey and Shaw ar…
We define symplectic fractional twists, which generalize Dehn twists, and use these in open books to investigate contact structures. The resulting contact structures are invariant under a circle action, and share several similarities with the invariant contact structures that were studied by Lutz and Giroux. We show that left-handed fractional twists often give rise to non-fillable contact manifolds. These manifolds are in fact "algebraically overtwisted", yet they do not seem to contain bLobs, nor are they directly related to negative stabilizations. We also show that the Weinstein conjecture…
