We perform cosmological N-body simulations of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld model, by solving the full non-linear equations of motion for the scalar degree of freedom in this model, the brane bending mode. While coupling universally to matter, the brane-bending mode has self-interactions that become important as soon as the density field becomes non-linear. These self-interactions lead to a suppression of the field in high-density environments, and restore gravity to General Relativity. The code uses a multi-grid relaxation scheme to solve the non-linear field equation in the quasi-static approximation. We perform simulations of a flat self-accelerating DGP model without cosmological constant. The results of the DGP simulations are compared with standard gravity simulations assuming the same expansion history, and with DGP simulations using the linearized equation for the brane bending mode. This allows us to isolate the effects of the non-linear self-couplings of the field which are noticeable already on quasi-linear scales. We present results on the matter power spectrum and the halo mass function, and discuss the behavior of the brane bending mode within cosmological structure formation. We find that, independently of CMB constraints, the self-accelerating DGP model is strongly constrained by current weak lensing and cluster abundance measurements.
The stability of an Einstein static universe in the DGP braneworld scenario is studied in this paper. Two separate branches denoted by $ε=\pm1$ of the DGP model are analyzed. Assuming the existence of a perfect fluid with a constant equation of state, $w$, in the universe, we find that, for the branch with $ε=1$, there is no a stable Einstein static solution, while, for the case with $ε=-1$, the Einstein static universe exists and it is stable when $-1<w<-1/3$. Thus, the universe can stay at this stable state past-eternally and may undergo a series of infinite, non-singular oscillations. There…
The DGP (Dvali, Gabadaze and Porrati) braneworld cosmology gives an alternative to dark energy. In DGP cosmology the alleged cosmic acceleration is generated by the modification of gravity theory. Nonlinear evolution of matter density contrast in DGP braneworld cosmology is studied in the present work. The semi-analytic approach of spherical collapse of matter overdensity is adopted in the present context to study the nonliner evolution. Further, the number count of galaxy clusters along the redshift is studied for the DGP cosmology using Press-Schechter and Sheth-Tormen mass function formalis…
We study cosmological dynamics of a canonical bulk scalar field in the DGP setup within a superpotential approach. We show that the normal branch of this DGP-inspired model realizes a late-time de Sitter expansion on the brane. We extend this study to the case that the bulk contains a phantom scalar field. Our detailed study in the supergravity-style analysis reveals some yet unexplored aspects of cosmological dynamics of bulk scalar field in the normal DGP setup. Some clarifying examples along with numerical analysis of the model parameter space are presented in each case.
We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of the self-accelerating and normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity. By adopting a parameterized post-Friedmann description of gravity, we utilize all of the cosmic microwave background data, including the largest scales, and its correlation with galaxies in addition to the geometrical constraints from supernovae distances and the Hubble constant. We find that on both branches brane tension or a cosmological constant is required at high significance with no evidence for the unique Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati modifications. The cro…
With a method in which the Friedmann equation is written in a form such that evolution of the scale factor can be treated as that of a particle in a "potential", we classify all possible cosmic evolutions in the DGP braneworld scenario with the dark radiation term retained. By assuming that the energy component is pressureless matter, radiation or vacuum energy, respectively, we find that in the matter or vacuum energy dominated case, the scale factor has a minimum value $a_0$. In the matter dominated case, the big bang singularity can be avoided in some special circumstances, and there may ex…
We investigate observational constraints on the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) model with Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at high redshift obtained directly from the Union2 Type Ia supernovae data (SNe Ia) set. With the cosmology-independent GRBs, the Union2 set, as well as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations from the WMAP7 result, the baryon acoustic oscillation, the baryon mass fraction in clusters and the observed $H(z)$ data, we obtain that the best-fit values of the DGP model are ${Ω_{M0}, Ω_{rc}} =\{0.235_{-0.014}^{+0.015},0.138_{-0.048}^{+0.051}\}$, which favor a flat univers…
The normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity with brane tension is confronted by the currently available cosmic observations from the geometrical and dynamical perspectives. On the geometrical side, the type Ia supernova as standard candle, the baryon acoustic oscillation as standard ruler and the cosmic microwave background measurement from the first released 15.5 months data were used to fix the background evolutions. On the dynamical side, the redshift space distortion data will be used to determine the evolution of the matter perturbation. Through a Markov chain Monte Ca…
The purpose of this paper is to study the Tsallis agegraphic dark energy with an interaction term between dark energy and dark matter in the DGP brane-world scenario. For this, we assume some initial conditions to obtain the dark energy density, deceleration, dark energy EoS, and total EoS parameters. Then, we analyze the statefinder parameters, $ω'{}_{DE}-ω_{DE}$ plots, and classical stability features of the model. The results state that the deceleration parameter provides the phase transition from decelerated to accelerated phase. The $ω_{DE}$ graphs show the phantom behavior, while the $ω_…
We present a detailed study of the collapse of a spherical perturbation in DGP braneworld gravity for the purpose of modeling simulation results for the halo mass function, bias and matter power spectrum. The presence of evolving modifications to the gravitational force in form of the scalar brane-bending mode lead to qualitative differences to the collapse in ordinary gravity. In particular, differences in the energetics of the collapse necessitate a new, generalized method for defining the virial radius which does not rely on strict energy conservation. These differences and techniques apply…
We introduce a cosmological model based on the normal branch of DGP braneworld gravity with a smooth dark energy component on the brane. The expansion history in this model is identical to LambdaCDM, thus evading all geometric constraints on the DGP cross-over scale r_c. This model can serve as a first approximation to more general braneworld models whose cosmological solutions have not been obtained yet. We study the formation of large scale structure in this model in the linear and non-linear regime using N-body simulations for different values of r_c. The simulations use the code presented …
We have studied homogeneous isotropic FRW model having dynamical dark energy DBI-essence with scalar field. The existence of cosmological scaling solutions restricts the Lagrangian of the scalar field $ϕ$. Choosing $p=X g(X e^{λϕ})$, where $X=-g^{μν} \partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ/2$ with $g$ is any function of $X e^{λϕ}$ and defining some suitable transformations, we have constructed the dynamical system in different gravity: (i) Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC), (ii) DGP BraneWorld and (iii) RS-II Brane World. We have investigated the stability of this dynamical system around the critical point for thre…
We study cosmological inflation on a warped DGP braneworld where inflaton field is non-minimally coupled to induced gravity on the brane. We present a detailed calculation of the perturbations and inflation parameters both in Jordan and Einstein frame. We analyze the parameters space of the model fully to justify about the viability of the model in confrontation with recent observational data. We compare the results obtained in these two frames also in order to judge which frame gives more acceptable results in comparison with observational data.
We perform a detailed comparison between the Finsler-Randers cosmological model and the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati braneworld model. If we assume that the spatial curvature is strictly equal to zero then we prove the following interesting proposition: {\it despite the fact that the current cosmological models have a completely different geometrical origin they share exactly the same Hubble expansion}. This implies that the Finsler-Randers model is cosmologically equivalent with that of the DGP model as far as the cosmic expansion is concerned. At the perturbative level we find that the Finsl…
In this paper we investigate cosmological dynamics on the normal branch of a DGP-inspired scenario within a phase space approach where induced gravity is modified in the spirit of $f(R)$-theories. We apply the dynamical system analysis to achieve the stable solutions of the scenario in the normal DGP branch. Firstly, we consider a general form of the modified induced gravity and we show that there is a standard de Sitter point in phase space of the model. Then we prove that this point is stable attractor only for those $f(R)$ functions that account for late-time cosmic speed-up.
We develop analytic solutions for the linear evolution of metric perturbations in the DGP braneworld modified gravity scenario including near-horizon and superhorizon modes where solutions in the bulk are required. These solutions apply to both the self-accelerating and normal branch and elucidate the nature of coordinate singularities and initial data in the bulk as well as their effect on perturbation evolution on the brane. Even on superhorizon scales, the evolution of metric perturbations is no longer necessarily scale free due to multiple resonances in the bulk. Based on these analytic so…
The accelerating expansion of our universe at present could be driven by an unknown energy component (Dark Energy) or a modification of general relativity (Modified Gravity). In this note we revisit the constraints on a phenomenological model which interpolates between the pure \LambdaCDM model and the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model with an additional parameter α. Combining the cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and type Ia supernovae (SNIa), as well as some high-redshift observations, such as the gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and the measurements of…
The scalar and vector cosmological perturbations at all length scales of our Universe are studied in the framework of the phantom braneworld model. The model is characterized by the parameter $Ω_M\equiv M^3/2m^2H_0$, with $M$ and $m$ the 5- and 4-dimensional Planck scales, respectively, and $H_0$ the Hubble parameter today, while $Ω_M\rightarrow 0$ recovers the $Λ\rm CDM$ model. Ignoring the backreaction due to the peculiar velocities and also the bulk cosmological constant, allows the explicit computation of the gravitational potentials, $Φ$ and $Ψ$. They exhibit exponentially decreasing scre…
In this work we explore and test new formulations of cosmological scenarios in $f(Q)$ theories. In these settings, the non-metricity scalar ($Q$) is the main source of gravity and Friedmann equations are modified to account for the associated degrees of freedom. This work focuses first on the derivation, and then theoretical and observational analysis of two such (new) exact cosmological models; they both display a non-standard behaviour in which an additional parameter encoding non-metricity effects acts in the fashion of a screened cosmological constant. One of the new settings has the same …
In this article, we study the shadow produced by rotating black holes with a tidal charge in a Randall-Sundrum braneworld model, with a cosmological constant. We obtain the apparent shape and the corresponding observables for different values of the tidal charge and the rotation parameter, and we analyze the influence of the presence of the cosmological constant. We also discuss the observational prospects for this optical effect.
We consider the asymmetric branes model of modified gravity, which can produce late time acceleration of the universe and compare the cosmology of this model to the standard $Λ$CDM model and to the DGP braneworld model. We show how the asymmetric cosmology at relevant physical scales can be regarded as a one-parameter extension of the DGP model, and investigate the effect of this additional parameter on the expansion history of the universe.
We investigate a brane model based on Randall-Sundrum scenarios with a generic dark energy component. The latter drives the accelerated expansion at late times of the Universe. In this scheme, extra terms are added into Einstein Field equations that are propagated to the Friedmann equations. To constrain the dark energy equation of state (EoS) and the brane tension we use observational data with different energy levels (Supernovae type Ia, $H(z)$, baryon acoustic oscillations, and cosmic microwave background radiation distance, and a joint analysis) in a background cosmology. Beside EoS being …
We investigate the cosmological implications of the recently constructed 5-dimensional braneworld cosmology with gravitating Nambu-Goto matching conditions. Inserting both matter and radiation sectors, we first extract the analytical cosmological solutions. Additionally, we use observational data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), along with requirements of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), in order to impose constraints on the parameters of the model. We find that the scenario at hand is in very good agreement with observations, and thus a small departure fro…
Braneworld models with variable brane tension $λ$ introduce a new degree of freedom that allows for evolving gravitational and cosmological constants, the latter being a natural candidate for dark energy. We consider a thermodynamic interpretation of the varying brane tension models, by showing that the field equations with variable $λ$ can be interpreted as describing matter creation in a cosmological framework. The particle creation rate is determined by the variation rate of the brane tension, as well as by the brane-bulk energy-matter transfer rate. We investigate the effect of a variable …
The braneworld model proposed by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) leads to an accelerated universe without cosmological constant or other form of dark energy for the positive branch $(ε=+1)$. For the negative branch $(ε=-1)$ we have investigated the behavior of a model with an holographic Ricci-like dark energy and dark matter, where the IR cutoff takes the form $αH^2 + β\dot{H}$, being $H$ the Hubble parameter and $α$, $β$ positive constants of the model. We perform an analytical study of the model in the late-time dark energy dominated epoch, where we obtain a solution for $r_cH(z)$, where…
In this paper, the cosmological dynamics of a modified holographic dark energy which is derived from the UV/IR duality by considering the black hole mass in higher dimensions as UV cutoff, is investigated in Dvali-Gabadaze-Porrati (DGP) brane world model. We choose Hubble horizon and future event horizon as IR cutoff respectively. And the two branches of the DGP model are both taken into account. When Hubble horizon is considered as IR cutoff, the modified holographic dark energy (HDE) behaves like an effect dark energy that modification of gravity in pure DGP brane world model acts and it can…
In Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmology, the Friedmann equation of our four-dimensional universe on 3-brane is modified in a high energy regime (Gauss-Bonnet regime), while the standard expansion law is reproduced in low energies (standard regime). We investigate the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmological effect on the thermal relic density of cold dark matter when the freeze-out of the dark matter occurs in the Gaugss-Bonnet regime. We find that the resultant relic density is considerably reduced when the transition temperature, which connects the Gauss-Bonnet regime with the standard regime, is l…
In the 5-dimensional braneworld cosmology, the Friedmann equation of our 4-dimensional universe on a brane is modified at high temperatures while the standard Big Bang cosmology is reproduced at low temperatures. Based on two well-known scenarios, the Randall-Sundrum and Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmologies, we investigate the braneworld cosmological effect on the relic density of a non-thermal dark matter particle whose interactions with the Standard Model particles are so weak that its relic density is determined by the freeze-in mechanism. For dark matter production processes in the early un…
We review the different frameworks in which Galileon scalar fields have been seen to emerge such an in DGP, New Massive Gravity and Ghost-free massive Gravity and emphasize their relation with the Lovelock invariant in braneworld models. The existence of a non-renormalization theorem for Galileon scalar fields makes them especially attractive candidates for inflation as well as for late-time acceleration. In particular we review the self-accelerating and degravitating branches of solutions present in Galileon models when arising from Massive Gravity and discuss their phenomenology.
We study the observational constraints on the Phantom Crossing DGP model. We demonstrate that the crossing of the phantom divide does not occur within the framework of the original Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model or the DGP model developed by Dvali and Turner. By extending their model in the framework of an extra dimension scenario, we study a model that realizes crossing of the phantom divide. We investigate the cosmological constraints obtained from the recent observational data of Type Ia Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The best fi…
