We investigated the superhump evolution, analysing optical photometric observations of the 2000 February-March, the 2002 October-November, and the 2006 September superoutbursts of SW UMa. The superhumps evolved in the same way after their appearance during the 2000 and the 2002 superoutbursts, and probably during the 2006 one. This indicates that the superhump evolution may be governed by the invariable binary parameters. We detected a periodicity in light curve after the end of the 2000 superoutburst without phase shift, which seems to be the remains of the superhumps. We found QPOs at the end stage of the 2000 and the 2002 superoutbursts, but failed to find extraordinarily large-amplitude QPOs called `super-QPOs' which previously have been observed in SW UMa.
We report on a BVRcIc survey of field W Ursae Majoris binary stars and present accurate colors for 606 systems that have been observed on at least three photometric nights from a robotic observatory in southern Arizona. Comparison with earlier photometry for a subset of the systems shows good agreement. We investigate two independent methods of determining the interstellar reddening, although both have limitations that can render them less effective than desired. A subset of 101 systems shows good agreement between the two reddening methods.
We present the analysis of hot spot brightness in light curves of the eclipsing dwarf nova IY Ursae Majoris during its normal outburst in March 2013 and in quiescence in April 2012 and in October 2015. Examination of four reconstructed light curves of the hot spot eclipses showed directly that the brightness of the hot spot changed significantly only during the outburst. The brightness of the hot spot, before and after the outburst, was on the same level. Hereby, based on the behaviour of the hot spot, IY UMa during its normal outburst follows the disk-instability model.
The multicolour photometric observations of the neglected eclipsing binary FT Ursae Majoris (FT UMa) were obtained in 2010. The 2003 version of Wilson-Devinney code was used to analyze the light curves in $B$, $V$, and $R$ bands simultaneously. Based on the spectroscopic mass ratio $q=0.984$ published by Pribulla et al., it is found that FT UMa is an evolved contact binary with a contact degree of 15.3%. The low amplitude of light variations, $\sim 0.15$ mag, arises mainly from a moderately low inclination angle of $i=62.^{\circ}80$ and almost identical components in size rather than the light…
The semiregular variable Z UMa experienced a particularly deep minimum at the end of March 2014 followed by a three month rise to maximum. The rise and subsequent decline were followed with low resolution (R~1000) spectroscopy, possibly for the first time. The spectral type of Z UMa varied between M7III at minimum and M4III at maximum while the bright hydrogen emission lines reported by observers during the last century now appear relatively weak and transitory.
In this Letter, the radial velocity variability of the chemically peculiar star Epsilon Ursae Majoris ($ε$ UMa) from the sharp cores of the hydrogen lines is investigated. This study is based on the ELODIE archival data obtained at different phases of the rotational cycle. The star exhibits low-amplitude radial velocity variations with a period of P=5.0887 d. The best Keplerian solution yields an eccentricity e=0.503 and a minimum mass ~14.7$M_{\rm Jup}$ on the hypothesis that the rotational axis of $ε$ UMa is perpendicular to the orbital plane. This result indicate that the companion is the b…
We present an analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) far ultraviolet snapshot spectrum of the dwarf nova BZ UMa taken during quiescence. We find that the flux continuum is consistent with that of a white dwarf atmosphere with a temperature of 15,000K, and a distance of about 156pc when assuming a white dwarf gravity of log(g)=7.5. We also show that the hydrogen quasi-molecular satellite lines opacity affects the spectrum around 1300-1400 A and has to be included to fine-tune the spectral modeling, this is self-consistent with the low stellar temp…
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer has revealed a T8.5 brown dwarf (WISE J111838.70+312537.9) that exhibits common proper motion with a solar-neighborhood (8 pc) quadruple star system - Xi Ursae Majoris. The angular separation is 8.5 arc-min, and the projected physical separation is about 4000 AU. The sub-solar metallicity and low chromospheric activity of Xi UMa A argue that the system has an age of at least 2 Gyr. The infrared luminosity and color of the brown dwarf suggests the mass of this companion ranges between 14 and 38 Jupiter masses for system ages of 2 and 8 Gyr respectively.
We examined data on about 20 years of observations of ER UMa available in AAVSO, VSNET, AFOEV, NSVS, VSOLJ databases together with published light curves. The obtained O-C diagram revealed a systematic change of the supercycle (time interval between two successive superotbursts) within 43.6 and 59.2 d. The time-scale of this change variation is from 300 to $\sim$ 1900 d. The number of normal outbursts within the supercycles also varied from 4 to 6 although no strong correlation between this number and supercycle length was found. We suggest that appearance of negative superhumps is responsible…
We report on time-resolved photometry during a 2012 January normaloutburst of SU UMa. The light curve shows hump-like modulations with a period of 0.07903(11) d, which coincides with the known superhump period of SU UMa during superoutbursts. We interpret this as superhump, based on the observed periodicity, profiles of the averaged light curve, and the $g'-I_{\rm c}$ variation during the normal outburst. This is the first case that superhumps are detected during an isolated normal outburst of SU UMa-type dwarf novae. The present result strongly suggests that the radius of the accretion disk a…
We report that the spectroscopic binary ? Ursae Majoris (?mu UMa) has secondary RV variations of 471.2 days in addition to those of 230.0 days already known. Keplerian orbit analysis yields stellar mass companions of 1.6 M_Sun for the 230-d period and 0.14 M_Sun for the 471-d period. However, the HIPPARCOS photometries show a period similar to the stellar rotational period, which is one-quarter of the RV period. Variations in the bisector velocity curvature show a period of 463.6 days. We also find ~?473-day variations in the equivalent width (EW) measurements of the H_alpha and H_beta lines, …
We observed the deeply eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf nova V4140 Sgr and established the very short supercycle of 69.7(3) d. There were several short outbursts between superoutbursts. These values, together with the short orbital period (0.06143 d), were similar to, but not as extreme as, those of ER UMa-type dwarf novae. The object is thus the first, long sought, eclipsing ER UMa-like object. This ER UMa-like nature can naturally explain the high (apparent) quiescent viscosity and unusual temperature profile in quiescence, which were claimed observational features against the thermal-tidal insta…
We report on a discovery of "negative" superhumps during the 2011 January superoutburst of ER UMa. During the superoutburst which started on 2011 January 16, we detected negative superhumps having a period of 0.062242(9) d, shorter than the orbital period by 2.2%. No evidence of positive superhumps was detected during this observation. This finding indicates that the disk exhibited retrograde precession during this superoutburst, contrary to all other known cases of superoutbursts. The duration of this superoutburst was shorter than those of ordinary superoutbursts and the intervals of normal …
We report on simultaneous $g'$, $R_{\rm c}$ and $I_{\rm c}$ photometry of SU Ursae Majoris during 2011 December - 2012 February using OAO/MITSuME. Our photometry revealed that quiescence is divided into three types based on the magnitude and color. Quiescent light curves showed complicated profiles with various amplitudes and time scales. Although no superoutbursts were observed during our run, five normal outbursts occurred with intervals of 11 - 21 d. The shapes of the normal outbursts were characteristic of the outside-in type. During the rising phase of a normal outburst, the light curve s…
We report the results of a long campaign of time-series photometry on the nova-like variable UX Ursae Majoris during 2015. It spanned 150 nights, with ~1800 hours of coverage on 121 separate nights. The star was in its normal `high state' near magnitude V=13, with slow waves in the light curve and eclipses every 4.72 hours. Remarkably, the star also showed a nearly sinusoidal signal with a full amplitude of 0.44 mag and a period of 3.680 +/- 0.007 d. We interpret this as the signature of a retrograde precession (wobble) of the accretion disc. The same period is manifest as a +/-33 s wobble in …
We have measured an annual parallax of the Mira variable R~Ursae~Majoris (R~UMa) with the VLBI exploration for Radio Astronomy (VERA). From the monitoring VLBI observations spanning about two years, we detected H$_2$O maser spots in the LSR velocities ranges from 37 to 42 km\,s$^{-1}$. We derived an annual parallax of 1.97$\pm$0.05\,mas, and it gives a corresponding distance of 508$\pm$13\,pc. The VLBI maps revealed 72 maser spots distributed in $\sim$110 au area around an expected stellar position. Circumstellar kinematics of the maser spots were also revealed by subtracting a systemic motion…
Stellar structure and evolution theory is one of the basis in modern astronomy. Stellar inner structures and their evolutionary states can be precisely tested by asteroseismology, since the inner information is brought to the stellar surface by the global oscillating waves and becomes observable. For stellar evolutionary speed (i.e. how long time scale does a star stay at a special evolution phase?), because of the insurmountable gap between the time scales of the evolutionary history of human civilization and a star, it can only be roughly tested by ensemble of stars in different evolutionary…
We simulate the light variability of the Ap star epsUMa using the observed surface distributions of Fe, Cr, Ca, Mn, Mg, Sr and Ti obtained with the help of Doppler Imaging technique. Using all photometric data available we specified light variations of epsUMa modulated by its rotation from far UV to IR. We employed the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code to predict the light variability in different photometric systems. The rotational period of epsUMa is refined to 5d088631(18). It is shown that the observed light variability can be explained as a result of the redistribution of radiative f…
We present new multiband CCD photometry for AA UMa made on 8 nights between January and March 2009; the $R$ light curves are the first ever compiled. Historical light curves, as well as ours, display partial eclipses and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II. Among possible spot models, a cool spot on either of the component stars and its variability with time permit good light-curve representations for the system. A total of 194 eclipse timings over 81 yrs, including our five timings, were used for ephemeris computations. We found that the orbital period of the system has v…
We searched for long-term period changes in the polar EK UMa using new optical data and archival X-ray/EUV data. An optical ephemeris was derived from data taken remotely with the MONET/N telescope and compared with the X-ray ephemeris based on Einstein, Rosat, and EUVE data. A three-parameter fit to the combined data sets yields the epoch, the period, and the phase offset between the optical minima and the X-ray absorption dips. An added quadratic term is insignificant and sets a limit to the period change. The derived linear ephemeris is valid over 30 years and the common optical and X-ray p…
We present spectra of the extreme polar AR Ursae Majoris (AR UMa) which display a clear Al I absorption doublet, alongside spectra taken less than a year earlier in which that feature is not present. Re-examination of earlier SDSS spectra indicates that the Al I absorption doublet was also present $\approx$8 years before our first non-detection. We conclude that this absorbing material is unlikely to be on the surface of either the white dwarf (WD) or the donor star. We suggest that this Al I absorption feature arises in circumstellar material, perhaps produced by the evaporation of asteroids …
The energy transfer of W UMa contact binaries and its effects on the secondary in W UMa contact binaries are investigated. Relations are given between the mass ratio (q) and the relative energy transfer rates, i.e. U1, the ratio of the transferred luminosity to the surface luminosity of the primary and U2, the ratio of the transferred luminosity to the nuclear luminosity of the secondary. The theoretical curves(U1 vs q and U2 vs q) are derived. Although these curves can reflect the distribution of U1 vs q and U2 vs q, some observational systems are significantly deviated from these curves. It …
We present an analysis of photometric observations of the eclipsing novalike variable DW UMa made by the CBA consortium between 1999 and 2015. Analysis of 372 new and 260 previously published eclipse timings reveals a 13.6 year period or quasi-period in the times of minimum light. The seasonal light curves show a complex spectrum of periodic signals: both positive and negative superhumps, likely arising from a prograde apsidal precession and a retrograde nodal precession of the accretion disc. These signals appear most prominently and famously as sidebands of the orbital frequency but the prec…
The brightest magnetic chemically peculiar stars theta Aur and eps UMa were targeted by numerous studies of their photometric and spectroscopic variability. Detailed maps of chemical abundance spots were repeatedly derived for both stars. However, very little information on the magnetic field geometries of these stars is available. In this study we aim to determine detailed magnetic field topologies of theta Aur and eps UMa based on modern, high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Both targets were observed in all four Stokes parameters using the Narval and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter…
We independently determine the zero-point offset of the Gaia early Data Release-3 (EDR3) parallaxes based on $\sim 110,000$ W Ursae Majoris (EW)-type eclipsing binary systems. EWs cover almost the entire sky and are characterized by a relatively complete coverage in magnitude and color. They are an excellent proxy for Galactic main-sequence stars. We derive a $W1$-band Period-Luminosity relation with a distance accuracy of $7.4\%$, which we use to anchor the Gaia parallax zero-point. The final, global parallax offsets are $-28.6\pm0.6$ $μ$as and $-25.4\pm4.0$ $μ$as (before correction) and $4.2…
We present an analysis of time-resolved, medium resolution optical spectroscopic observations of UX UMa in the blue (3920-5250 A) and red (6100-7200 A) wavelength ranges, that were obtained in April 1999 and March 2008 respectively. The observed characteristics of our spectra indicate that UX UMa has been in different states during those observations. The blue spectra are very complex. They are dominated by strong and broad single-peaked emission lines of hydrogen. The high-excitation lines of HeII 4686 and the Bowen blend are quite strong as well. All the lines consist of a mixture of absorpt…
We used the newly commissioned 50 cm Binocular Network (50BiN) telescope at Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to observe the old open cluster NGC 188 in V and R as part of a search for variable objects. Our time-series data span a total of 36 days. Radial velocity and proper-motion selection resulted in a sample of 532 genuine cluster members. Isochrone fitting was applied to the cleaned cluster sequence, yielding a distance modulus of (m - M)0V = 11.35 \pm 0.10 mag and a total foreground reddening of E(V - R) = 0.062 \pm 0.002 mag. Light-curve soluti…
Context. 65 UMa belongs to rather small group of stellar systems of higher multiplicity, whose inner and outer orbits are well-known. Methods: Photometric, spectroscopic, and interferometric data were analyzed, revealing the basic physical properties of the system 65 UMa. A disentangling technique is used to perform the spectra decomposition. This combined approach allows us to study the long-term period changes in the system, identifying the period variation due to the motion on the visual orbit, in addition to a short-term modulation. Results: We find that the system contains one more compon…
We analyze the photometric data and spectroscopic data that collect on the $δ$ Scuti star AE UMa. The fundamental and the first overtone frequencies are confirmed as $f_{0} = 11.62560$\,c\,d$^{-1}$ and $f_{1} = 15.03124$\,c\,d$^{-1}$, respectively, from the frequency content by analyzing of the 40 nights light curve spanning from 2009 to 2012. Additionally, another 37 frequencies are identified as either the harmonics or the linear combinations of the fundamental and the first overtone frequencies, among which 25 are newly detected. The rate of period change of the fundamental mode is determin…
We investigate in detail the LiTE of the most probable binary candidate TU UMa. We used a new code applied on previously available and newly determined maxima timings to confirm binarity and refine parameters of the orbit of the RRab component in the binary system. The binary hypothesis is also tested using RV measurements. We used new approach to determine brightness maxima timings based on template fitting. This can also be used on sparse or scattered data. This approach was successfully applied on measurements from different sources. To determine the orbital parameters of the double star TU…
We observed RZ LMi, which is renowned for the extremely (~19d) short supercycle and is a member of a small, unusual class of cataclysmic variables called ER UMa-type dwarf novae, in 2013 and 2016. In 2016, the supercycles of this object substantially lengthened in comparison to the previous measurements to 35, 32, 60d for three consecutive superoutbursts. We consider that the object virtually experienced a transition to the novalike state (permanent superhumper). This observed behavior extremely well reproduced the prediction of the thermal-tidal instability model. We detected a precursor in t…
ZZ UMa is a detached eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 2.299 d that shows total eclipses and starspot activity. We used five sectors of light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and two published sets of radial velocities to establish the properties of the system to high precision. The primary star has a mass of 1.135 +/- 0.009 Msun and a radius of 1.437 +/- 0.007 Rsun, whilst the secondary component has a mass of 0.965 +/- 0.005 Msun and a radius of 1.075 +/- 0.005 Rsun. The properties of the primary star agree with theoretical predictions for a slightly supe…
We carried out the photometric observations of the SU UMa-type dwarf nova ER UMa during 2011 and 2012, which showed the existence of persistent negative superhumps even during the superoutburst. We performed two-dimensional period analysis of its light curves by using a method called "least absolute shrinkage and selection operator" (Lasso) and "phase dispersion minimization" (PDM) analysis, and we found that the period of negative superhumps systematically changed between a superoutburst and the next superoutburst. The trend of the period change can beinterpreted as reflecting the change of t…
ER Ursae Majoris is the prototype for a subset of SU UMa-type dwarf novae characterized by short cycle times between outburst, high outburst frequency, and ``negative'' superhumps. It suffers superoutbursts every 43 days, lasting 20 days, normal outbursts every 4 days and has an outburst amplitude of 3 magnitudes. We have carried out a far ultraviolet (FUV) spectral analysis of ER UMa in quiescence, by fitting Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra with model accretion disks and high gravity photosphere models. Using the Gaia parallax…
DK Cyg (P = 0.4707) is a W Ursae Majoris type eclipsing binary system that undergoes complete eclipses. All the published photoelectric data have been collected and utilized to re-examine and update the period behavior of the system. A significant period increase with rate of 12.590x10-11 day/cycle was calculated. New period and ephemeris has been calculated for the system. A long term photometric solution study was performed and a light curve elements were calculated. We investigated the evolutionary status of the system using theoretical evolutionary models.
Strömgren $uvby-β$ photometry of the stars classified as RR Lyrae stars RU Piscium, SS Piscium and TU Ursae Majoris has been used to estimate their iron abundance, temperature, gravity and absolute magnitude. The stability of the pulsating period is discussed. The nature of SS Psc as a RRc or a HADS is addressed. The reddening of each star is estimated from the Strömgren colour indices and reddening sky maps. The results of three approaches to the determination of [Fe/H], $T_{\rm eff}$ and $\log(g)$ are discussed: Fourier light curve decomposition, the Preston $ΔS$ index and the theoretical gr…
We present spectroscopy and orbital periods Porb for 30 apparently non-magnetic cataclysmic binaries with periods below about 3 hours, nearly all of which are dwarf novae, mostly of the SU Ursae Majoris subclass. We then turn to the evidence supporting the prediction that short-period dwarf novae evolve toward longer periods after passing through a minimum period -- the "period bounce" phenomenon. Plotting data from the literature reveals that for superhump period excess $ε= (P_{\rm sh} - P_{\rm orb} )/P_{\rm orb}$ below about 0.015, the period appears to increase with decreasing epsilon, agre…
New relationships between the orbital period and some parameters of W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) type systems are presented in this study. To investigate the relationships, we calculated the absolute parameters of a sample of 118 systems. For this purpose, we used the parallax values obtained from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) star catalog for more precise calculations. The other required parameters, including the light curve solutions and the orbital period were derived from previous research. For some relationships, we added 86 systems from another study with an orbital period of less…
Nova explosions are caused by global thermonuclear runaways triggered in the surface layers of accreting white dwarfs. It has been predicted that localised thermonuclear bursts on white dwarfs can also take place, similar to Type I X-ray bursts observed in accreting neutron stars. Unexplained rapid bursts from the binary system TV Columbae, in which mass is accreted onto a moderately-strong magnetised white dwarf from a low-mass companion, have been observed on several occasions in the past $\approx40$ years. During these bursts the optical/UV luminosity increases by a factor of $>3$ in less t…
