Investigation of general-relativistic spherically symmetric steady accretion of self-gravitating perfect fluid onto compact objects reveals the existence of two weakly accreting regimes. In the first (corresponding to the test fluid approximation) the mass of the central object is much larger than the mass of the accreting fluid; in the second the mass of the fluid dominates. The stability of the solutions belonging to the first regime has been proved by Moncrief. In this work we report the results of a series of numerical studies demonstrating stability of massive solutions, i.e., belonging to the second of the aforementioned regimes. It is also shown that a formal analogy between "sonic horizons" in the accretion picture and event horizons in general relativity is rather limited. The notion of a "sonic horizon" is only valid in a linear regime of small hydrodynamical perturbations. Strong perturbations can still escape from beneath the "sonic horizon."
We investigate spherical, isothermal and polytropic steady accretion models in the presence of the cosmological constant. Exact solutions are found for three classes of isothermal fluids, assuming the test gas approximation. The cosmological constant damps the mass accretion rate and - above certain limit - completely stops the steady accretion onto black holes. A "homoclinic-type" accretion flow of polytropic gas has been discovered in AdS spacetimes in the test-gas limit. These results can have cosmological connotation, through the Einstein--Straus vacuole model of embedding local structures…
The spherically symmetric steady accretion of polytropic perfect fluids onto a black hole is the simplest flow model that can demonstrate effects of backreaction (selfgravity). It has been discovered 16 years ago that backreaction does not influence some ("intensive") characteristics of sonic points, under suitable conditions. Herein we consider a wider class of equations of state, with polytropic indices in the range (1,2], and establish detailed boundary conditions that allow one to prove this fact. We find also numerical examples showing limits of our analytic criteria - if suitable analyti…
In previous work, we derived the most general solution of the collisionless Boltzmann equation describing the accretion of a kinetic gas into a Schwarzschild black hole background, and we gave explicit expressions for the corresponding observables (the current density and stress energy-momentum tensor) in terms of certain integrals over the distribution function. In this article, we numerically compute these integrals for the particular case of the steady-state, spherical symmetric accretion flows which, at infinity, are described by an equilibrium distribution function of given temperature. W…
In this paper we investigate a steady accretion within the Einstein-Straus vacuole, in the presence of the cosmological constant. The dark energy damps the mass accretion rate and --- above certain limit --- completely stops the steady accretion onto black holes, which in particular is prohibited in the inflation era and after (roughly) $10^{12}$ years from Big Bang (assuming the presently known value of the cosmological constant). Steady accretion would not exist in the late phases of the Penrose's scenario - known as the Weyl curvature hypothesis - of the evolution of the Universe.
We theoretically propose a finite-size quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with coherent source and drain placed at its two ends, which can in principle sustain a stationary sonic black hole with a single event horizon. Our analysis is focused on the condensate persistence against quantum fluctuations. We show that similar to white hole-black hole pairs, dynamical instabilities occur. Investigating in detail the instabilities' dependence on the system parameters, we also identify windows of formally infinite black hole lifetimes. By using quantum depletion of the condensate as a dia…

In this work we study steady and spherical relativistic dust accretion onto a static and spherically symmetric scale--dependent black hole. In particular we consider a polytropic scale--dependent black hole as a central object and obtain that the radial velocity profile and the energy density are affected when scale--dependence of the central object is taken into account and such a deviation is controlled by the so called running parameters of the scale--dependence models.
This paper deals with the steady-state polytropic fluid accretion onto a higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m black hole. We formulate the generalized mass flux conservation equation, energy flux conservation and relativistic Bernoulli equation to discuss the accretion process. The critical accretion is investigated by finding critical radius, critical sound velocity and critical flow velocity. We also explore gas compression and temperature profiles to analyze the asymptotic behavior. It is found that the results for Schwarzschild black hole are recovered when $q=0$ in four dimensio…
This paper deals with the dynamical behavior of phantom field near five dimensional charged black hole. We formulate equations of motion for steady-state spherically symmetric flow of phantom fluids. It is found that phantom energy accretes onto black holes for $u<0$. Further, the location of critical point of accretion are evaluated that leads to mass to charge ratio for 5D charged black hole. This ratio implies that accretion cannot transform a black hole into a naked singularity. We would like to mention here that this work is an irreducible extension of 4D charged black hole.
We describe spherically symmetric steady-state accretion of perfect fluid in the Reissner-Nordstrom metric. We present analytic solutions for accretion of a fluid with the linear equations of state and of the Chaplygin gas. It is also shown that, under reasonable physical conditions, there is no steady-state accretion of a perfect fluid onto a Reissner-Nordstrom naked singularity. Instead, a static atmosphere of fluid is formed. We discuss a possibility of violation of the third law of black hole thermodynamics for a phantom fluid accretion.
We examine the steady-state spherically symmetric accretion of relativistic fluids, with a polytropic equation of state, onto a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. The mass accretion rate, critical radius, and flow parameters are determined and compared with results obtained in standard four dimensions. The accretion rate, $\dot{M}$, is an explicit function of the black hole mass, $M$, as well as the gas boundary conditions and the dimensionality, $D$, of the spacetime. We also find the asymptotic compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event …
In this paper, we investigate the accretion on the Reissner-Nordström anti-de-Sitter black hole with global monopole charge. We discuss the general solutions of accretion using the isothermal and polytropic equations of state for steady state, spherically symmetric, non-rotating accretion on the black hole. In the case of isothermal flow, we consider some specific fluids and derive their solutions at the sonic point as well. However, in case of polytropic fluid we calculate the general expressions only, as there exists no global (Bondi) solutions for polytropic test fluids. In addition to this…
Viscous dissipation, as a small perturbative effect about the Bondi flow, shrinks its sonic sphere. An Eulerian perturbation on the steady flow gives a wave equation and the corresponding dispersion relation. The perturbation is a high-frequency travelling acoustic wave, in which small dissipation is taken iteratively. The wave, propagating radially outwards against the bulk inflow, is blocked just within the sonic horizon, where the amplitude of the wave diverges because of viscosity. The blocked acoustic wave can still tunnel outward through the horizon with a viscosity-dependent decaying am…
We revisit Bondi accretion - steady-state, adiabatic, spherical gas flow onto a Schwarzschild black hole at rest in an asymptotically homogeneous medium - for stiff polytropic equations of state (EOSs) with adiabatic indices $Γ> 5/3$. A general relativistic treatment is required to determine their accretion rates, for which we provide exact expressions. We discuss several qualitative differences between results for soft and stiff EOSs - including the appearance of a minimum steady-state accretion rate for EOSs with $Γ\geq 5/3$ - and explore limiting cases in order to examine these differences.…
We study effects of heating by dark matter (DM) annihilation on black hole gas accretion. We observe that, for reasonable assumptions about DM densities in spikes around supermassive black holes, as well as DM masses and annihilation cross-sections within the standard WIMP model, heating by DM annihilation may have an appreciable effect on the accretion onto Sgr A$^*$ in the Galactic center. Motivated by this observation we study the effects of such heating on Bondi accretion, i.e. spherically symmetric, steady-state Newtonian accretion onto a black hole. We consider different adiabatic indice…
The late time accelerated expansion of the Universe demands that even in local galactic-scales it is desirable to study astrophysical phenomena, particularly relativistic accretion related phenomena in massive galaxies or in galaxy mergers and the dynamics of the kiloparsecs-scale structure and beyond, in the local-galaxies in Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SDS) background, rather than in Schwarzschild or Newtonian paradigm. Owing to the complex and nonlinear character of the underlying magnetohydrodynamical equations in general relativistic (GR) regime, it is quite useful to have an Newtonian analo…
We analyze the steady radial accretion of matter into a nonrotating black hole. Neglecting the self-gravity of the accreting matter, we consider a rather general class of static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat background spacetimes with a regular horizon. In addition to the Schwarzschild metric, this class contains certain deformation of it which could arise in alternative gravity theories or from solutions of the classical Einstein equations in the presence of external matter fields. Modeling the ambient matter surrounding the black hole by a relativistic perfect fluid, we refo…
As of now, all analogue gravity models available in the literature deal with the emergence of an acoustic geometry through linear perturbations of transonic fluids only. It has never been investigated whether the analogue gravity phenomena is solely a consequence of linear perturbations, or rather a generic property of arbitrary perturbations of inhomogeneous, inviscid and irrotational fluids. In the present work, for the first time in the literature, we demonstrate that acoustic spacetimes may be formed through higher order non-linear perturbations, and thus establish that analogue gravity ph…
We provide a systematic study for the accretion of a collisionless, relativistic kinetic gas into a nonrotating black hole. To this end, we first solve the relativistic Liouville equation on a Schwarzschild background spacetime. The most general solution for the distribution function is given in terms of appropriate symplectic coordinates on the cotangent bundle, and the associated observables, including the particle current density and stress energy-momentum tensor, are determined. Next, we explore the case where the flow is steady-state and spherically symmetric. Assuming that in the asympto…
Linear perturbation of general relativistic accretion of low angular momentum hydrodynamic fluid onto a Kerr black hole leads to the formation of curved acoustic geometry embedded within the background flow. Characteristic features of such sonic geometry depend on the black hole spin. Such dependence can be probed by studying the correlation of the acoustic surface gravity $κ$ with the Kerr parameter $a$. The $κ- a$ relationship further gets influenced by the geometric configuration of the accretion flow structure. In this work, such influence has been studied for multitransonic shocked accret…
For accretion onto astrophysical black holes, we demonstrate that linear perturbation of Bernoulli's constant defined for an inviscid irrotational adiabatic flow of perfect ideal fluid gives rise to phenomena of analogue gravity. The formulation of our work is done in the Newtonian framework and also within the General relativistic framework, i.e., considering a static spacetime background, as well. The resulting structure of the analogue acoustic metric is similar to the acoustic metric found in perturbing velocity potential and mass accretion rate.
We investigate the dynamical behavior of phantom energy near stringy magnetically charged black hole. For this purpose, we derive equations of motion for steady-state spherically symmetric flow of phantom energy onto the stringy magnetically charged black hole. It is found that phantom energy accreting onto black hole decreases its mass. Further, the location of critical points of accretion is explored, which yields mass to charge ratio. This ratio implies that accretion process cannot transform a black hole into an extremal black hole or a naked singularity, hence cosmic censorship hypothesis…
Radial steady-state accretion of polytropic matter is investigated under cylindrical symmetry in the Levi-Civita background metric. The model can be considered as a cylindrical analog of Bondi accretion in strong gravitational field. As a byproduct of this study, the issue of defining the line mass density is addressed and the role of the metric free parameters is discussed on the example of physical observables. The form of radial accretion equations is insensitive to the structure of the interior solution. Accordingly, the accretion solution analysis can be limited to a special Wilson form o…
We investigate spherically symmetric, steady state, adiabatic accretion onto a Tangherlini-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in arbitrary dimensions by using $D$-dimensional general relativity. We obtain basic equations for accretion and determine analytically the critical points, the critical fluid velocity, and the critical sound speed. We lay emphasis on the condition under which the accretion is possible. This condition constrains the ratio of mass to charge in a narrow limit, which is independent of dimension for large dimension. This condition may challenge the validity of the cosmic censors…
We study time evolution of sub-Keplerian transonic accretion flows onto black holes using a general relativistic numerical simulation code. We perform simulations in Schwarzschild spacetime. We first compare one-dimensional simulation results with theoretical results and validate the performance of our code. Next, we present results of axisymmetric, two-dimensional simulation of advective flows. We find that even in this case, for which no complete theoretical analysis is present in the literature, steady state shock formation is possible.
Analogue gravity models describe linear fluctuations of fluids as a massless scalar field propagating on stationary acoustic spacetimes constructed from the background flow. In this paper, we establish that this paradigm generalizes to arbitrary order nonlinear perturbations propagating on dynamical analogue spacetimes. Our results hold for all inviscid, spherically symmetric and barotropic non-relativistic flows in the presence of an external conservative force. We demonstrate that such fluids always admit a dynamical description governed by a coupled pair of wave and continuity equations. We…
In an accretion of fluid, its velocity may transit from subsonic to supersonic. The point at which such transition occurs is called sonic point and often mathematically special. We consider a steady-state and spherically symmetric accretion problem of ideal photon gas in general static spherically symmetric spacetime neglecting back reaction. Our main result is that the EOS of ideal photon gas leads to correspondence between its sonic point and the photon sphere of the spacetime in general situations. Despite of the dependence of the EOS on the dimension of spacetime, this correspondence holds…
We formulate and solve the problem of spherically symmetric, steady state, adiabatic accretion onto a Schwarzschild-like black hole obtained recently. We derive the general analytic expressions for the critical points, the critical velocity, the critical speed of sound, and subsequently the mass accretion rate. The case for polytropic gas is discussed in detail. We find the parameter characterizing the breaking of Lorentz symmetry will slow down the mass accretion rate, while has no effect on the gas compression and the temperature profile below the critical radius and at the event horizon.
In this paper we investigate the problem of ordinary baryonic matter accretion onto the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole. The fundamental equations governing the spherically symmetric steady state matter accretion are deduced. These equations are seen to be modified due to the presence of noncommutativity. The matter accretion rate is computed and is found to increase rapidly with the increase in strength of the noncommutative parameter. The sonic radius reduces while the sound speed at the sonic point increases with the increase in the strength of noncommutativity. Th…
