The crystal structure of the layered iron arsenide Sr3Sc2O5Fe2As2 was determined between 300 and 10 K. The lattice parameters of the tetragonal cell decrease anisotropically according to delta(c)/c : delta(a)/a = 4.2, which results in a slight flattening of the As-Fe-As bond angle within the FeAs layers. No indication of a structural instability could be detected. 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopic data show a single signal at 4.2, 77, and 298 K, respectively, subjected to quadrupole splitting. The isomer shift increases from 0.36(1) mm/s at 298 K to 0.49(1) mm/s at 4.2 K. No indication for magnetic ordering was found.
Superconducting FeSe has been investigated by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature and Moessbauer spectroscopy at various temperatures including strong external magnetic fields applied to the absorber. It was found that isomer shift exhibits sharply defined increase at about 105 K leading to the lowering of the electron density on iron nucleus by 0.02 electron/a.u.^3. Above jump in the electron density is correlated with the transition from the P4/nmm to the Cmma structure, while decreasing temperature. Moessbauer measurements in the external magnetic field and for te…
A polycrystalline sample of superconducting LaFePO was prepared in a tin flux at 1123 K. The structure was determined from single crystal data (ZrCuSiAs-type, P4/nmm, a = 3.9610(1), c = 8.5158(2) A, Z = 2) and the phase analysis was performed by the Rietveld method. LaFePO is Pauli-paramagnetic and becomes superconducting at 7 K after removing the ferromagnetic impurity phase Fe2P from the sample. 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy measurements at 298, 77, 4.2 and 4 K show single signals at isomer shifts around 0.35 mm/s, subject to weak quadrupole splitting. At 4 K, a symmetric line broadening appe…
The compound EuFe(2-x)Co(x)As2 was investigated by means of the 57Fe and 151Eu Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature (4.2 - 300 K) for x=0 (parent), x=0.34 - 0.39 (superconductor) and x=0.58 (overdoped). It was found that spin density wave (SDW) is suppressed by Co-substitution, however it survives in the region of superconductivity, but iron spectra exhibit some non-magnetic component in the superconducting region. Europium orders anti-ferromagnetically regardless of the Co concentration with the spin re-orientation from the a-axis in the parent compound toward c-axis with the increasing…
The structural and magnetic phase transitions of the ternary iron arsenides SrFe2As2 and EuFe2As2 were studied by temperature-dependent x-ray powder diffraction and 57-Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy. Both compounds crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure at room temperature and exhibit displacive structural transitions at 203 K (SrFe2As2) or 190 K (EuFe2As2) to orthorhombic lattice symmetry in agreement with the group-subgroup relationship between I4/mmm and Fmmm. 57-Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments with SrFe2 As2 show full hyperfine field splitting below the phase transition t…
Iron-based superconductors Ba0.7Rb0.3Fe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 of the '122' family have been investigated by means of the 14.41-keV Moessbauer transition in 57Fe versus temperature ranging from the room temperature till 4.2 K. A comparison is made with the previously investigated parent compounds BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2. It has been found that Moessbauer spectra of these superconductors are composed of the magnetically split component due to development of spin density wave (SDW) and non-magnetic component surviving even at lowest temperatures. The latter component is responsible for supercon…
Polycrystalline samples of the layered iron arsenides Sr2CrO3FeAs and Ba2ScO3FeAs were synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions and their crystal structures determined by the X-ray powder diffraction. Their structures are tetragonal (P4/nmm; Sr2CrO3FeAs: a = 391.12(1) pm, c = 1579.05(3) pm; Ba2ScO3FeAs: a = 412.66(5) pm, c = 1680.0(2) pm, Z = 2) and isotypic to Sr2ScO3CuS. Iron arsenide layers are sandwiched between perowskite-like oxide blocks and separated by ~1600 pm, which is much larger compared to the 1111 iron arsenide superconductors. The bond length and angles within the …
Iron-based superconductor SmFeAsO(0.91)F(0.09) has been investigated by the 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature with the special attention paid to the region of the superconducting transition at about 47 K. Modulation of the electron charge density was found. It leads to the development of the charge density wave (CDW) and electric field gradient wave (EFGW). The modulation of CDW is enhanced in the temperature region of the superconducting gap opening, while the amplitude of EFGW is partly suppressed within this temperature region. This effect is exactly opposite to the similar ef…
The new quaternary iron arsenide-fluoride SrFeAsF with the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure was synthesized and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray powder diffraction (P4/nmm, a = 399.30(1), c = 895.46(1) pm). SrFeAsF undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 175 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (P4/nmm) to orthorhombic (Cmme). 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments show a single signal at room temperature at a…
The compound BaFe2Se3 (Pnma) has been synthesized in the form of single crystals with the average composition Ba0.992Fe1.998Se3. The Moessbauer spectroscopy used for investigation of the valence states of Fe in this compound at temperature ranging from 4.2 K till room temperature revealed the occurrence of mixed-valence state for iron. The spectrum is characterized by sharply defined electric quadrupole doublet above magnetic ordering at about 250 K. For the magnetically ordered state one sees four iron sites at least and each of them is described by separate axially symmetric electric field g…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the LaO0.9F0.1BiSe2 single crystals. Tunneling spectra show a finite local density of states at EF, which is consistent with metallic conductivity in bulk. In addition, the existence of the supermodulation running along the diagonal directions of Bi square lattice was revealed. The period of the supermodulation was about 3 to 5 times the length of the lattice constant. This period is close to that observed in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2.
Two iron-chalcogenide superconductors Li(x)[C5H5N](y)Fe(2-z)Se2 and Cs(x)Fe(2-z)Se2 in the as-prepared and annealed state have been investigated by means of the Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature. Multi-component spectra are obtained. One can see a non-magnetic component due to iron located in the unperturbed Fe-Se sheets responsible for superconductivity. Remaining components are magnetically ordered even at room temperature. There is some magnetically ordered iron in Fe-Se sheets perturbed by presence of the iron vacancies. Additionally, one can see iron dispersed between sheets in t…
The electron-phonon interaction in magnesium diboride MgB_2 single crystals is investigated by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. For the first time the electron coupling with E_2g phonon modes is resolved in the PC spectra. The correlation between intensity of the extremely broad E_2g modes in the PC spectra and value of the superconducting gap is established. Our observations favor current theoretical models for electron-phonon mediated superconductivity in MgB_2 and they better match the harmonic phonons model.
Specific heat has been measured down to 600 mK and up to 8 Tesla by the highly sensitive AC microcalorimetry on the MgCNi3 single crystals with Tc ~ 7 K. Exponential decay of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures proved that a superconducting energy gap is fully open on the whole Fermi surface, in agreement with our previous magnetic penetration depth measurements on the same crystals. The specific-heat data analysis shows consistently the strong coupling strength 2D/kTc ~ 4. This scenario is supported by the direct gap measurements via the point-contact spectroscopy. Moreover, the …
We performed optical spectroscopy measurement on a superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal with T$_c$=37 K. Formation of the superconducting energy gaps in the far-infared reflectance spectra below T$_c$ is clearly observed. The gap amplitudes match well with the two distinct superconducting gaps observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on different Fermi surfaces. We determined absolute value of the penetration depth at 10 K as $λ\simeq2000 Å$. A spectral weight analysis shows that the Ferrell-Glover-Timkham sum rule is satisfied at low energy s…
From field-angle dependent Andreev reflection spectroscopy on single crystals of La(O,F)BiSeS, which belongs to the recently discovered BiCh 2 (Ch = S, Se) based layered superconductors, we found that the superconductivity in La(O,F)BiSeS is highly anisotropic. We measured a superconducting energy gap of 0.61 meV for current injected along c-axis at 1.5 K. Detailed temperature and magnetic field dependent studies of the gap also reveal the presence of unconventional pairing in La(O,F)BiSeS. We show that the observed anisotropic superconducting properties can be attributed to the anisotropy in …
We report on the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on single crystals of Mg2. Tunneling was performed both parallel and perpendicular to the crystalline c-axis. In the first case, a single superconducting gap (Delta_pi = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. Tunneling parallel to the ab-plane reveals an additional, larger gap (Delta_sigma ~ 7 meV) originating in the highly two-dimensional sigma-band. Vortex imaging in the pi-band was performed with the field and tunnel current parallel to the c-axis. The vortices have a large core size compared to estimates ba…
We report the first low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy study of high quality Bi2223 crystals. We present atomic resolution and show spectroscopic data acquired on two different samples. In one case, for Tc= 109K and a transition width of only 1K, we obtained an extremely homogeneous sample with a gap value of 60 meV over at least 50 nm. In the other case, the respective parameters were Tc= 111K with a transition width of 1.7K and yielded a slightly less homogeneous sample with a gap of 45 meV. We evidence strong similarities with Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and discuss …
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
We present the results of the first directional point-contact spectroscopy experiments in high-quality MgB_2 single crystals. Due to the directionality of the current injection into the samples, the application of a magnetic field allowed us to separate the contributions of the sigma and pi bands to the total conductance of our point contacts. By using this technique, we were able to obtain the temperature dependency of each gap independent of the other. The consequent, strong reduction of the error on the value of the gap amplitude as function of temperature allows a stricter test of the pred…
Temperature and doping dependent tunneling spectroscopy on $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ single crystals has been investigated by using break-junction technique. The results provide direct evidence that the pseudogap persists into heavily overdoped regime, possibly in whole doping range of the superconducting phase. The gap value determined from the peak-to-peak of the conductance, $Δ_{p-p}$, exhibits a jump-like increase as $T$ is raised across the critical temperature. The magnitude of the jump, the pseudogap opening temperature and superconducting gap decrease with raising doping. The $Δ_{p-p}$ b…
Directional point-contact spectroscopy measurements were performed for the first time in state-of-the-art MgB_2 single crystals. The selective suppression of the superconductivity in the "pi" band by means of a suitable magnetic field allowed separating the partial contribution of each band to the total point-contact conductance. By fitting the partial conductance curves sigma_sigma(V) and sigma_pi(V), we got an independent determination of the two gaps, Delta_sigma and Delta_pi, with a strong reduction of the experimental uncertainty. Their temperature dependence was found to agree well with …
Binary compounds of SnT family(T= As, Sb, Te, S, Se, P) exhibit novel properties like superconductivity, topologically protected states etc. Some of these compounds crystallize in NaCl type structure or in layered structure, both of which are considered potentially important for high-temperature/unconventional superconductivity. It was previously shown that K-doped BaBiO$_3$ with NaCl type structure exhibits superconducting state below $\sim$ 30 K. SnAs has crystallographic configuration that is exactly similar to K-doped BaBiO$_3$ and this warrants for the investigation of superconductivity i…
We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in NdFeAsO1-xFx single crystals. We find that the Gamma hole pocket is fully gapped below the superconducting transition temperature. The value of the superconducting gap is 15 +- 1.5 meV and its anisotropy around the hole pocket is smaller than 20% of this value. This is consistent with an isotropic or anisotropic s-wave symmetry of the order parameter or exotic d-wave symmetry with nodes located off the Fermi surface sheets. This is a significant departure from the situation i…
The point-contact spectra of tetragonal $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ with $T_c=50-60~K$ are studied at various temperatures. The single-electron energy ($2Δ_0/kT_c\simeq 17$) and its temperature dependence are determined. The characteristic energies of quasiparticle excitations interacting with conduction electrons in this high-$T_c$. superconductor are found to correlate with the characteristic phonon energies. The possibility of a pair gap, which increases with temperature, is revealed near the critical temperature.
Early electron tunneling experiments with the Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 measured Δ= 16-28 meV, while bulk optical experiments measured Δ= 43-45 meV. We report new tunneling measurements of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 single crystals and c-axis oriented thin films, where the measured Δvalues on both sample types cover the range of 24-50 meV, with more than 70% of the junctions displaying Δ> 30 meV. This work resolves the inconsistency between previously published results of tunneling and optical experiments. New tunneling conductances reveal improved superconducting gap region characteristics consistent with d-wave symm…
We perform an in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on high quality FeSe single crystals grown by a vapor transport technique. Below the structural transition at $T_{\rm s}\sim$90 K, the reflectivity spectrum clearly shows a gradual suppression around 400 cm$^{-1}$ and the conductivity spectrum shows a peak at higher frequency. The energy scale of this gap-like feature is comparable to the width of the band splitting observed by ARPES. The low-frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components and the overall plasma frequency is smaller than that of the FeAs based compounds, suggestin…
We have performed detailed $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements on Ba$_{0.78}$K$_{0.22}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ single crystal mosaics showing antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_N$ with superconductivity below $T_C$. Analysis of the Mössbauer spectra shows a decrease in the magnetic hyperfine (hf) field but no change in the magnetic volume fraction below $T_C$. This clearly indicates the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in these compounds. The decrease in the magnetic hf field below $T_C$ depends on the difference between $T_N$ and $T_C$, being the lar…
Andreev reflection (AR) and Yanson point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) have been applied simul-taneously to study the superconducting (SC) gap and the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in a Zn single crystal. The correlation between SC gap value and EPI spectrum allowed us to establish the anisotropy of the SC gap. Evidence for multiband superconductivity in Zn is present with two gaps related as 1:1.3. We also found that the AR features are more robust against the point-contact quality than the EPI ones, possibly, due to the large coherence length in Zn compared to the typical PC size. Even for …
The results of the first directional point-contact measurements in MgB2 single crystals, in the presence of magnetic fields up to 9 T either parallel or perpendicular to the ab planes, are presented. By applying suitable magnetic fields, we separated the partial contributions of the sigma and pi bands to the total Andreev-reflection conductance. Their fit with the BTK model allowed a very accurate determination of the temperature dependency of the gaps (Delta_sigma and Delta_pi), that resulted in close agreement with the predictions of the two-band models for MgB2. We also obtained, for the fi…
We report on band-dependent quasiparticle dynamics in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c = 37 K$) measured using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. In the superconducting state, we observe two distinct relaxation processes: a fast component whose decay rate increases linearly with excitation density and a slow component with an excitation density independent decay rate. We argue that these two components reflect the recombination of quasiparticles in the two hole bands through intraband and interband processes. We also find that the thermal recombination rate of quasiparticles increases qua…
The optimally doped 122 iron-based superconductor Ba(0.6)K(0.4)Fe2As2 has been studied by 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature ranging from 4.2 K till 300 K with particular attention paid to the superconducting transition around 38 K. The spectra do not contain magnetic components and they exhibit quasi-continuous distribution of quadrupole split doublets. A distribution follows the electric field gradient (EFG) spatial modulation (wave) - EFGW. The EFGW is accompanied by some charge density wave (CDW) having about an order of magnitude lesser influence on the spectrum. The EFGW cou…
The ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at 140 K, very similar to LaFeAsO, the parent compound of the iron arsenide superconductors. BaFe2As2 is a poor Pauli-paramagnetic metal and undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 140 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (I4/mmm) to orthorhombic (Fmmm). 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments show a singl…
Iron mono-arsenide in the powder form has been investigated by transmission 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 4.2 - 1000 K. Additional spectra have been obtained at 20 K and 100 K applying external magnetic field of 7 T. It was found that the spin spiral propagating along the c-axis leads to the complex variation of the hyperfine magnetic field amplitude with the spin orientation varying in the a-b plane. The magnitude of the hyperfine field pointing in the direction of the local magnetic moment depends on the orientation of this moment in the a-b plane. Patterns are vastly…
Two Single crystals of Nb3Sn presenting the martensitic anomaly at different temperature and shape, as observed with specific heat measurements, were used to study structural features in the electronic density of states with point contact spectroscopy. At high temperature below the martensitic anomaly, we observed different spectroscopic characteristics. One sample displaying a well marked specific heat peak, shows a clear defined structure in the differential conductance that evolves with temperature and may be associated with changes on the density of states due to the opening of a charge de…
57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy was applied to investigate the superconductor parent compound Fe(1+x)Te for x=0.06, 0.10, 0.14, 0.18 within the temperature range 4.2 K - 300 K. A spin density wave (SDW) within the iron atoms occupying regular tetrahedral sites was observed with the square root of the mean square amplitude at 4.2 K varying between 9.7 T and 15.7 T with increasing x. Three additional magnetic spectral components appeared due to the interstitial iron distributed over available sites between the Fe-Te layers. The excess iron showed hyperfine fields at approximately 16 T, 21 T and 49 …
We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of oxygen over- and under-doped Bi-2212 single crystals in a temperature range between 14 K and 290 K using a break-junction technique. In over- and under-doped samples we observe a pseudogap with T* = 280 - 290 K and T* > 290 K, respectively. In order to explain the data we consider possible models for the pseudogap, namely, (i) a precursor pairing; (ii) a charge-density-wave gap; (iii) a spin-gap due to antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations. Analyzing all data we show unambiguously that the only model which fits the data is a gap due to AF correlation…
The three-dimensional electronic structure and Ce 4f electrons of the heavy fermion superconductor CePt2In7 is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using variable photon energy establishes the existence of quasi-two and three dimensional Fermi surface topologies. Temperature-dependent 4d-4f on-resonance photoemission spectroscopies reveal that heavy quasiparticle bands begin to form at a temperature well above the characteristic (coherence) temperature T*. T* emergence may be closely related to crystal electric field splitting, particularly the low-lying heavy band formed by…
Break-junction tunneling spectroscopy at temperatures 30-50 mK in high magnetic field is used to directly probe the quasiparticle density of states within the energy gap in a single crystal Bi2212 high-$T_c$ superconductor. The measured tunneling conductances $dI/dV(V)$ in the subgap region have a zero flat region with no evidence for a linear increase of the density of states with voltage. A number of tunnel break-junctions exhibited $dI/dV(V)$ curves with a second energy gap structure at the average magnitude 2$Δ_{p-p}/e=13$ mV. Our data cannot be explained by either a pure $s$ pairing or a …
Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO were grown from NaAs flux and the in-plane optical properties were studied over a wide frequency range. A sizable electronic correlation effect was indicated from the analysis of the free-carrier spectral weight. With decreasing temperature from 300 K, we observed a continuous suppression of the spectral weight near 0.6 eV. But a spin-density-wave gap formation at lower energy scale was seen only in the broken-symmetry state. We elaborate that both the itinerancy and local spin interactions of Fe\emph{3d} electrons are present for the FeAs-based syst…
The paper presents polarized Raman scattering study on a few-micron-size crystallite of LiBC with natural faces. The experiment on as grown sample has revealed a four lattice modes with frequencies at 1276 cm^-1, 830 cm^-1, 546 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1, respectively. The number of observed Raman lines and their selection rules are incompatible with the assumed D6h symmetry. The modes at 1276 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1 correspond to the expected Raman active modes. In contrast with the superconducting compound MgB2, the B-C bond stretching mode (at 1276 cm^-1) has rather small damping. The two "forbidden" …
Electronic evolution from an antiferromagnet to a high-Tc superconductor is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission experiments on tetragonal Ca(1.9)Na(0.1)CuO(2)Cl(2) single crystals, which were successfully grown for the first time under high pressures. In this underdoped superconductor, we found clear fingerprints of the parent insulator: a shadow band and a large pseudo-gap. These observations are most likely described by a "chemical potential shift", which contrasts clearly with the prevailing wisdom of the "pinned chemical potential" learned from the prototype La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), demons…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) Fe K-edge spectra of the FeSex (x=1-0.8) single crystals cleaved in situ in vacuum reveal characteristic Fe 4sp states, a lattice distortion and the Se K-edge spectra point to a strong Fe 3d-Se 4p hybridization giving rise to itinerant charge carriers. A formal charge of ~1.8+ for Fe and ~2.2- for Se were evaluated from these spectra in the FeSex (x=0.88). The charge balance between Fe and Se is assigned itinerant electrons located in the Fe-Se hybridization bond. As x decreases the 4p hole count increases and a crystal structure distortion is observed that …
