The Wall surgery obstruction groups have two interesting geometrically defined subgroups, consisting of the surgery obstructions between closed manifolds, and the inertial elements. We show that the inertia group $I_{n+1}(π,w)$ and the closed manifold subgroup $C_{n+1}(π,w)$ are equal in dimensions $n+1\geq 6$, for any finitely-presented group $π$ and any orientation character $w\colon π\to \cy 2$.
The total surgery obstruction of a finite n-dimensional Poincare complex X is an element s(X) of a certain abelian group S_n (X) with the property that for n >= 5 we have s(X) = 0 if and only if X is homotopy equivalent to a closed n-dimensional topological manifold. The definitions of S_n (X) and s(X) and the property are due to Ranicki in a combination of results of two books and several papers. In this paper we present these definitions and a detailed proof of the main result so that they are in one place and we also add some of the details not explicitly written down in the original source…
We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular …
Using Taubes' periodic ends theorem, Auckly gave examples of toroidal and hyperbolic irreducible integer homology spheres which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. We give an obstruction to a homology sphere being surgery on a knot coming from Heegaard Floer homology. This is used to construct infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples.
Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.
This paper presents an alternative approach to controlled surgery obstructions. The obstruction for a degree one normal map $(f,b): M^n \rightarrow X^n$ with control map $q: X^n \rightarrow B$ to complete controlled surgery is an element $σ^c (f, b) \in H_n (B, \mathbb{L})$, where $M^n, X^n$ are topological manifolds of dimension $n \geq 5$. Our proof uses essentially the geometrically defined $\mathbb{L}$-spectrum as described by Nicas (going back to Quinn) and some well known homotopy theory. We also outline the construction of the algebraically defined obstruction, and we explicitly describ…
We provide infinitely many rational homology 3-spheres with weight-one fundamental groups which do not arise from Dehn surgery on knots in $S^3$. In contrast with previously known examples, our proofs do not require any gauge theory or Floer homology. Instead, we make use of the $SU(2)$ character variety of the fundamental group, which for these manifolds is particularly simple: they are all $SU(2)$-cyclic, meaning that every $SU(2)$ representation has cyclic image.
Surgery obstruction of a normal map to a simple Poincare pair $(X,Y)$ lies in the relative surgery obstruction group $L_*(π_1(Y)\toπ_1(X))$. A well known result of Wall, the so called $π$-$π$ theorem, states that in higher dimensions a normal map of a manifold with boundary to a simple Poincare pair with $π_1(X)\congπ_1(Y)$ is normally bordant to a simple homotopy equivalence of pairs. In order to study normal maps to a manifold with a submanifold, Wall introduced surgery obstruction group for manifold pairs $LP_*$ and splitting obstruction groups $LS_*$. In the present paper we formulate and …
For a 3-manifold with torus boundary admitting an appropriate involution, we show that Khovanov homology provides obstructions to certain exceptional Dehn fillings. For example, given a strongly invertible knot in S^3, we give obstructions to lens space surgeries, as well as obstructions to surgeries with finite fundamental group. These obstructions are based on homological width in Khovanov homology, and in the case of finite fundamental group depend on a calculation of the homological width for a family of Montesinos links.
Cappell and Shaneson pointed out in 1978 interesting properties of Browder - Livesay invariants which are similar to differentials in some spectral sequence. Such spectral sequence was constructed in 1991 by Hambleton and Kharshiladze. This spectral sequence is closely related to a problem of realization of elements of Wall groups by normal maps of closed manifolds. The main step of construction of the spectral sequence is an infinite filtration of spectra in which only the first two, as is well-known, have clear geometric sense. The first one is a spectrum $\Bbb L(π_1(X))$ for surgery obstruc…
The paper introduces a group $LSP$ of obstructions for splitting a homotopy equivalence along a pair of submanifolds. We develop exact sequences relating the $LSP$-groups with various surgery obstruction groups for manifold triple and structure sets arising from triples of manifolds. The natural map from the surgery obstruction group of the ambient manifold to the $LSP$-group provides an invariant when elements of the Wall group are not realized by normal maps of closed manifolds. Some $LSP$-groups are computed precisely.
This paper computes the quadratic Witt groups (the Wall L-groups) of the polynomial ring Z[t] and the integral group ring of the infinite dihedral group, with various involutions. We show that some of these groups are infinite direct sums of cyclic groups of order 2 and 4. The techniques used are quadratic linking forms over Z[t] and Arf invariants.
The problem of splitting a homotopy equivalence along a submanifold is closely related to the surgery exact sequence and to the problem of surgery of manifold pairs. In classical surgery theory there exist two approaches to surgery in the category of manifolds with boundaries. In the $ rel \partial$ case the surgery on a manifold pair is considered with the given fixed manifold structure on the boundary. In the relative case the surgery on the manifold with boundary is considered without fixing maps on the boundary. Consider a normal map to a manifold pair $(Y, \partial Y)\subset (X, \partial …
Browder-Novikov-Sullivan-Wall surgery theory investigates the homotopy types of manifolds, using a combination of algebra and topology. It is the aim of these notes to provide an introduction to the more algebraic aspects of the theory (such as the Wall surgery obstruction groups), without losing sight of the geometric motivation.
We provide a new obstruction for a rational homology 3-sphere to arise by Dehn surgery on a given knot in the 3-sphere. The obstruction takes the form of an inequality involving the genus of the knot, the surgery coefficient, and a count of L-structures on the 3-manifold, that is spin-c structures with the simplest possible associated Heegaard Floer group. Applications include an obstruction for two framed knots to yield the same 3-manifold, an obstruction that is particularly effective when working with families of framed knots. We introduce the rational and integral Dehn surgery genera for a…
Using the mapping cone of a rational surgery, we give several obstructions for Seifert fibered surgeries, including obstructions on the Alexander polynomial, the knot Floer homology, the surgery coefficient and the Seifert and four-ball genus of the knot.
Let $M^3$ be a 3-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $π_1(M)$ which contains a quaternion subgroup $Q$ of order 8. In 1979 Cappell and Shaneson constructed a nontrivial normal map $ f\colon M^3\times T^2\to M^3\times S^2$ which cannot be detected by simply connected surgery obstructions along submanifolds of codimension 0, 1, or 2, but it can be detected by the codimension 3 Kervaire-Arf invariant. The proof of non-triviality of $σ(f)\in L_5(π_1(M))$ is based on consideration of a Browder-Livesay filtration of a manifold $X$ with $π_1(X)\cong π_1(M)$. For a Browder-Livesay pair $Y^{n-1…
The inertia subgroup $I_n(π)$ of a surgery obstruction group $L_n(π)$ is generated by elements which act trivially on the set of homotopy triangulations $\Cal S(X)$ for some closed topological manifold $X^{n-1}$ with $π_1(X)=π$. This group is a subgroup of the group $C_n(π)$ which consists of the elements which can be realized by normal maps of closed manifolds. In all known cases these groups coincide and the computation of them is one of the basic problems of surgery theory. The computation of the group $C_n(π)$ is equivalent to the computation the image of the assembly map $A:H_{n}(Bπ, \bol…
Wall's finiteness obstruction is an algebraic K-theory invariant which decides if a finitely dominated space is homotopy equivalent to a finite CW complex. The object of this survey is to describe the invariant (which was first formulated in 1965) and some of its many applications to the surgery classification of manifolds.
Let $X$ be a connected compact 3-manifold with non-empty boundary. Consider the boundary $M$ of $X\times D^2$. $M$ is a 4-dimensional closed manifold and has the same fundamental group as $X$. Various examples of $X$ are known for which a certain assembly map $A:H_4(X;L)\to L_4(π_1(X))$ is injective. For such an $X$ and any CW-spine $B$ of $X$, there is a $UV^1$-map $p:M\to B$. For any $ε>0$, if the surgery obstruction for a TOP normal map $(f,b):N\to M$ vanishes, we can perform surgery on $f$ to change it into a $p^{-1}(ε)$-controlled homotopy equivalence.
We introduce a homology surgery problem in dimension 3 which has the property that the vanishing of its algebraic obstruction leads to a canonical class of π-algebraically-split links in 3-manifolds with fundamental group π. Using this class of links, we define a theory of finite type invariants of 3-manifolds in such a way that invariants of degree 0 are precisely those of conventional algebraic topology and surgery theory. When finite type invariants are reformulated in terms of clovers, we deduce upper bounds for the number of invariants in terms of π-decorated trivalent graphs. We also con…
We decribe and announce some results (joint with G. Besson, L. Bessieres, M. Boileau and J.Porti) about the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds. Most of the article is primarily intended as an introduction for nonexperts to geometrization of 3-manifolds, Ricci flow with surgery, and the simplicial volume approach to collapsing theorems. In the last section, Ricci flow with surgery on open 3-manifolds and obstructions to positive scalar curvature are discussed.
We study which closed, connected, orientable three-manifolds $X$ containing a Klein bottle arise as integral Dehn surgery along a knot in $S^3$. Such $X$ are presentable as a gluing of the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to a knot manifold, and we use a variety of Heegaard Floer type invariants to generate surgery obstructions. Suppose that $X$ is $8$-surgery along a genus two knot, and arises by gluing the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to an $S^3$ knot complement. We show that $X$ is an L-space, it must be the dihedral manifold $\left(-1; \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac…
In this paper we prove several related results concerning smooth $\Z_p$ or $\s^1$ actions on 4-manifolds. We show that there exists an infinite sequence of smooth 4-manifolds $X_n$, $n\geq 2$, which have the same integral homology and intersection form and the same Seiberg-Witten invariant, such that each $X_n$ supports no smooth $\s^1$-actions but admits a smooth $\Z_n$-action. In order to construct such manifolds, we devise a method for annihilating smooth $\s^1$-actions on 4-manifolds using Fintushel-Stern knot surgery, and apply it to the Kodaira-Thurston manifold in an equivariant setting…
The A-B slice problem is a reformulation of the topological 4-dimensional surgery conjecture in terms of decompositions of the 4-ball and link homotopy. We show that link groups, a recently developed invariant of 4-manifolds, provide an obstruction for the class of model decompositions, introduced by M. Freedman and X.-S. Lin. This unifies and extends the previously known partial obstructions in the A-B slice program. As a consequence, link groups satisfy Alexander duality when restricted to the class of model decompositions, but not for general submanifolds of the 4-ball.
The monoids l_{2q+1}(Z[π]) detect s-cobordisms amongst certain bordisms between stably diffeomorphic 2q-dimensional manifolds and generalise the Wall simple surgery obstruction groups, L_{2q+1}^s(Z[π]) \subset l_{2q+1}(Z[π]). In this paper we give exact sequences which completely describe l_{2q+1}(Z[π]) as a set and which we use to compute its Grothendieck group. As a consequence we deduce cancellation results for stably diffeomorphic manifolds with polycyclic-by-finite fundamental group.
