We analyze some generic properties of the dark energy (DE) perturbations, in the case of a self-conserved DE fluid. We also apply a simple test (the "F-test") to compare a model to the data on large scale structure (LSS) under the assumption of negligible DE perturbations. We exemplify our discussions by means of the LXCDM model, showing that it provides a viable solution to the cosmological coincidence problem.
Recently, the so-called Elko spinor field has been proposed to be a candidate of dark energy. It is a non-standard spinor and has unusual properties. When the Elko spinor field is used in cosmology, its unusual properties could bring some interesting consequences. In the present work, we discuss the cosmological coincidence problem in the spinor dark energy models by using the dynamical system method. Our results show that the cosmological coincidence problem should be taken to heart in the investigations of spinor dark energy models.
We investigate several varying-mass dark-matter particle models in the framework of phantom cosmology. We examine whether there exist late-time cosmological solutions, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. Imposing exponential or power-law potentials and exponential or power-law mass dependence, we conclude that the coincidence problem cannot be solved or even alleviated. Thus, if dark energy is attributed to the phantom paradigm, varying-mass dark matter models cannot fulfill the basic requirement that led to their co…
In this paper we investigate possible solutions to the coincidence problem in flat phantom dark energy models with a constant dark energy equation of state and quintessence models with a linear scalar field potential. These models are representative of a broader class of cosmological scenarios in which the universe has a finite lifetime. We show that, in the absence of anthropic constraints, including a prior probability for the models inversely proportional to the total lifetime of the universe excludes models very close to the $Λ{\rm CDM}$ model. This relates a cosmological solution to the c…
We study the cosmological dynamics of D-BIonic and DBI scalar field, which is coupled to matter fluid. For the exponential potential and the exponential couplings, we find a new analytic scaling solution yielding the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Since it is shown to be an attractor for some range of the coupling parameters, the density parameter of matter fluid can be the observed value, as in the coupled quintessence with a canonical scalar field. Contrary to the usual coupled quintessence, where the value of matter couple giving observed density parameter is too large to satisfy ob…
We show that if Dark Matter is made up of light bosons, they form a Bose-Einstein condensate in the early Universe. This in turn naturally induces a Dark Energy of approximately equal density and exerting negative pressure. This explains the so-called coincidence problem.
We study a new exactly solvable model of coupling of the Dark Energy and Dark Matter, in the framework of which the kernel of non-gravitational interaction is presented by the integral Volterra-type operator well-known in the classical theory of fading memory. Exact solutions of this isotropic homogeneous cosmological model were classified with respect to the sign of the discriminant of the cubic characteristic polynomial associated with the key equation of the model. Energy-density scalars of the Dark Energy and Dark Matter, the Hubble function and acceleration parameter are presented explici…
The baryon-dark matter coincidence is a long-standing issue. Interestingly, the recent observations suggest the presence of dark radiation, which, if confirmed, would pose another coincidence problem of why the density of dark radiation is comparable to that of photons. These striking coincidences may be traced back to the dark sector with particle contents and interactions that are quite similar, if not identical, to the standard model: a dark parallel world. It naturally solves the coincidence problems of dark matter and dark radiation, and predicts a sterile neutrino(s) with mass of ${\cal …
The densities of dark and baryonic matter are comparable: ζ= ρ_D / ρ_B ~ O(1). This is surprising because they are controlled by different combinations of low-energy physics parameters. Here we consider the probability distribution over ζin the landscape. We argue that the Why Comparable problem can be solved without detailed anthropic assumptions, and independently of the nature of dark matter. Overproduction of dark matter suppresses the probability like 1/(1+ζ), if the causal patch is used to regulate infinities. This suppression can counteract a prior distribution favoring large ζ, selecti…
A novel idea is proposed for a natural solution of the dark energy and its cosmic coincidence problem. The existence of local antigravity sources, associated with astrophysical matter configurations distributed throughout the universe, can lead to a recent cosmic acceleration effect. Various physical theories can be compatible with this idea, but here, in order to test our proposal, we focus on quantum originated spherically symmetric metrics matched with the cosmological evolution through the simplest Swiss cheese model. In the context of asymptotically safe gravity, we have explained the obs…
The dark energy, dark matter and baryon densities in the Universe are observed to be similar, with a factor of no more than 20 between the largest and smallest densities. We show that this coincidence can be understood via superhorizon domains of randomly varying densities when the baryon density at initial collapse of galaxy-forming perturbations is determined by anthropic selection. The baryon and dark matter densities are assumed to be dependent on random variables θ_{d} and θ_{b} according to ρ_{dm} ~ θ_{d}^α and ρ_{b} ~ θ_{b}^β, while the effectively constant dark energy density is depend…
A late accelerated expansion of the Universe is obtained from non-relativistic particles with a short-range attractive interaction, and low enough temperature to produce a Bose-Einstein condensate; by considering coupled dark-energy particles, energy is interchanged with dark matter, allowing it to describe recent acceleration by strengthening its effect. We show that for a sizable range of parameters, dark energy and dark matter evolve with similar energy densities, solving the coincidence problem, and in agreement with the luminosity distance vs redshift, derived from supernova data.
A mechanism capable to provide a natural solution to two major cosmological problems, i.e. the cosmic acceleration and the coincidence problem, is proposed. A specific brane-bulk energy exchange mechanism produces a total dark pressure, arising when adding all normal to the brane negative pressures in the interior of galactic core black holes. This astrophysically produced negative dark pressure explains cosmic acceleration and why the dark energy today is of the same order to the matter density for a wide range of the involved parameters. An exciting result of the analysis is that the recent …
A cosmological constant fits all current dark energy data, but requires two extreme fine tunings, both of which are currently explained by anthropic arguments. Here we discuss anti-anthropic solutions to one of these problems: the cosmic coincidence problem- that today the dark energy density is nearly equal to the matter density. We replace the ensemble of Universes used in the anthropic solution with an ensemble of tracking scalar fields that do not require fine-tuning. This not only does away with the coincidence problem, but also allows for a Universe that has a very different future than …
The matching of our epoch of existence with the approximate equality of dark energy and dark matter energy densities is an apparent further fine-tuning, beyond the already troubling 120 orders of magnitude that separate dark energy from the Planck scale. In this paper I will argue that the coincidence is not a fine-tuning problem, but instead an artifact of anthropic selection. Rather than assuming measurements are equally likely in all epochs, one should insist that measurements of a quantity be typical amongst all such measurements. As a consequence, particular observations will reflect the …
The observed acceleration of the present universe is shown to be well explained by the holographic dark energy characterized by the total comoving horizon of the universe ($η$HDE). It is of interest to notice that the very large primordial part of the comoving horizon generated by the inflation of early universe makes the $η$HDE behave like a cosmological constant. As a consequence, both the fine-tuning problem and the coincidence problem can reasonably be understood with the inflationary universe and holographical principle. We present a systematic analysis and obtain a consistent cosmologica…
If primordial black holes (PBHs) contribute more than 10 percent of the dark matter (DM) density, their energy density today is of the same order as that of the baryons. Such a cosmic coincidence might hint at a mutual origin for the formation scenario of PBHs and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Baryogenesis can be triggered by a sharp transition of the rolling rate of inflaton from slow-roll to (nearly) ultraslow-roll phases that produces large curvature perturbations for PBH formation in single-field inflationary models. We show that the baryogenesis requirement drives the PBH contribu…

Motivated by the cosmological constant and the coincidence problems, we consider a cosmological model where the dark sectors are interacting together through a phenomenological decay law $\dotρ_Λ=Qρ_Λ^n$ in a FRW spacetime with spatial curvature. We show that the only value of $n$ for which the late-time matter energy density to dark energy density ratio ($r_m=ρ_m/ρ_Λ$) is constant (which could provide an explanation to the coincidence problem) is $n=3/2$. For each value of $Q$, there are two distinct solutions. One of them involves a spatial curvature approaching zero at late times ($ρ_k\appr…
We study the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At such a scale the Universe is highly inhomogeneous and filled with discretely distributed inhomogeneities in the form of galaxies and groups of galaxies. As a matter source, we consider dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) with a non-linear interaction $Q = 3\mathcal{H}γ\bar\varepsilon_{\mathrm{DE}} \bar\varepsilon_{\mathrm{DM}} / (\bar\varepsilon_{\mathrm{DE}} + \bar\varepsilon_{\mathrm{DM}})$, where $γ$ is a constant. We assume that DM is pressureless and DE has a constant equation of state pa…
In the Ijjas-Steinhardt cyclic model, the universe passes through phases dominated by radiation, matter, and a dark energy scalar field, with the value of the scale factor increasing with each cycle. Since each cycle terminates in a finite time, it is straightforward to calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes; when this fraction is large, it can be taken as a solution of the coincidence problem. This solution of the coincidence problem requires a relatively short lifetime for each cycle, but un…
We show that the baryon-dark matter coincidence problem is solved in the CMSSM. The baryons and dark matter are generated simultaneously through the late-time decay of non-topological solitons, Q-balls, which are formed after the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. A certain relation between the universal scalar mass, $m_0$, and the universal gaugino mass, $M_{1/2}$, is required to solve the coincidence problem, marginally depending on the other CMSSM parameters, and the result is consistent with the observation of the 126-GeV Higgs boson.
We argue that, for generic string compactifications, dark energy is likely to signal the beginning of the end of our universe, perhaps even through decompactification, with possible implications for the cosmological coincidence problem. Thanks to the scarcity (absence?) of stable de Sitter vacua, dark energy in string theory is assumed to take the form of a quintessence field in slow roll. As it rolls, a tower of heavy states will generically descend, triggering an apocalyptic phase transition in the low energy cosmological dynamics after at most a few hundred Hubble times. As a result, dark e…
We examine cyclic phantom models for the universe, in which the universe is dominated sequentially by radiation, matter, and a phantom dark energy field, followed by a standard inflationary phase. Since this cycle repeats endlessly, the Universe spends a substantial portion of its lifetime in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes, thus ameliorating the coincidence problem. We calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in such a coincidental state and find that it is nearly the same as in the case of a phantom model with a future big rip.…

In this paper we study a model of interacting dark energy - dark matter where the ratio between these components is not constant, changing from early to late times in such a way that the model can solve or alleviate the cosmic coincidence problem (CP). The interaction arises from an assumed relation of the form $ρ_x \propto ρ_d^α$, where $ρ_x$ and $ρ_d$ are the energy densities of dark energy and dark matter components, respectively, and $α$ is a free parameter. For a dark energy equation of state parameter $w=-1$ we found that, if $α=0$, the standard $Λ$CDM model is recovered, where the coinc…
The Hubble tension can be significantly eased if there is an early component of dark energy that becomes active around the time of matter-radiation equality. Early dark energy models suffer from a coincidence problem -- the physics of matter-radiation equality and early dark energy are completely disconnected, so some degree of fine-tuning is needed in order for them to occur nearly simultaneously. In this paper we propose a natural explanation for this coincidence. If the early dark energy scalar couples to neutrinos then it receives a large injection of energy around the time that neutrinos …
An interesting approach to the cosmological coincidence problem is to allow dark matter and dark energy interact with each other also nongravitationally. We consider two general Ansätze for such an interaction and appraise their ability to address the coincidence problem. We determine the average accuracy required on the cosmic expansion rate data to distinguish interacting cosmological models from the conventional $Λ$CDM scenario. We find that among the planned surveys the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope has the best chance to detect an interaction, though at a low significance level. To…
We present a simple cosmological model in which a single, non-minimally coupled scalar field with a quartic potential is responsible for both inflation at early times and acceleration at late times. Little or no fine tuning is needed to explain why the present density of dark energy is comparable to that of pressureless matter. Dark energy is identified with the potential of the scalar field, which is sourced by the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. This becomes significant when matter has decoupled from radiation and become fully non-relativistic, so that $ϕ\proptoρ_m^{1/3}\proptoρ_{m,0}^{…
Interactions between dark matter and dark energy which result in a power-law behavior (with respect to the cosmic scale factor) of the ratio between the energy densities of the dark components (thus generalizing the LCDM model) have been considered as an attempt to alleviate the cosmic coincidence problem phenomenologically. We generalize this approach by allowing for a variable equation of state for the dark energy within the CPL-parametrization. Based on analytic solutions for the Hubble rate and using the Constitution and Union2 SNIa sets, we present a statistical analysis and classify diff…
We propose a new dark energy model for solving the cosmological fine-tuning and coincidence problems. A default assumption is that the fine-tuning problem disappears if we do not interpret dark energy as vacuum energy. The key idea to solving the coincidence problem is that the Universe may have several acceleration phases across the whole cosmic history. The specific example we study is a quintessence model with approximately repeated double exponential potential, which only introduces one Planck scale parameter and three dimensionless parameters of order unity. The cosmological background ev…
We examine the evolution of a universe comprising two interacting fluids, which interact via a term proportional to the product of their densities. In the case of two matter fluids it is shown that the ratio of the densities tends to a constant after an initial cooling-off period. We then obtain a complete solution for the cosmological constant (w = -1) scenario. Finally, we investigate the general case in which the dark energy equation of state is p = w*rho, where w is a constant, and show that periodic solutions can occur if w < -1. We further demonstrate that the ratio of the dark matter to…
Three-form field can give rise to viable cosmological scenarios of dark energy with potentially observable signatures distinct from standard single scalar field models. In this study, the background dynamics of three-form cosmology are investigated. Our analysis suggests that the potential of three-form field should be runaway. We also investigate the possibility to solve the coincidence problem by using the coupling of three-form field to dark matter. Four types of coupling form are examined and we find that the coupling of the form $Q = \sqrt{6}Γ(\dot{X} + 3HX)/κ$ provides the possibility to…
Dark energy interacting with dark matter is a promising model to solve the cosmic coincidence problem. We study the signature of such interaction on large scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. Based on the detail analysis in perturbation equations of dark energy and dark matter when they are in interaction, we find that the large scale CMB, especially the late Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect, is a useful tool to measure the coupling between dark sectors. We also discuss the possibility to detect the coupling by cross-correlating CMB maps with tracers of the large scal…
It has been shown beyond reasonable doubt that the majority (about 95%) of the total energy budget of the universe is given by the dark components, namely Dark Matter and Dark Energy. What constitutes these components remains to be satisfactorily understood however, despite a number of promising candidates. An associated conundrum is that of the coincidence, i.e. the question as to why the Dark Matter and Dark Energy densities are of the same order of magnitude at the present epoch, after evolving over the entire expansion history of the universe. In an attempt to address these, we consider a …
The observational fact that the present values of the densities of dark energy and dark matter are of the same order of magnitude, $ρ_{de0}/ρ_{dm0} \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$, seems to indicate that we are currently living in a very special period of the cosmic history. Within the standard model, a density ratio of the order of one just at the present epoch can be seen as coincidental since it requires very special initial conditions in the early Universe. The corresponding "why now" question constitutes the cosmological "coincidence problem". According to the standard model the equality $ρ_{de} = ρ…

By assuming a phenomenological form for the ratio of the DE and DM densities $ρ_X\propto ρ_{m} a^ξ$ (Dalal et al.2001), we discuss the cosmic coincidence problem in light of current observational data. $ξ$ is a key parameter to denote the severity of the coincidence problem. In this scenario, $ξ=3$ and $ξ=0$ correspond to $Λ$CDM and the self-similar solution without coincidence problem, respectively. Hence, any solution with a scaling parameter $0<ξ<3$ makes the coincidence problem less severe. In addition, the standard cosmology without interaction between DE and DM is characterized by $ξ+3ω_…
Motivated by the cosmological constant and the coincidence problems, we consider a cosmological model where the cosmological constant $Λ_0$ is replaced by a cosmological term $Λ(t)$ which is allowed to vary in time. More specifically, we are considering that this dark energy term interacts with dark matter through the phenomenological decay law $\dotρ_Λ=-Qρ_Λ^{n}$. We have constrained the model for the range $n\in[0,10]$ using various observational data (SNeIa, GRB, CMB, BAO, OHD), emphasizing the case where $n=3/2$. This case is the only one where the late-time value for the ratio of dark ene…
Early dark energy (EDE) that becomes subdominant around the epoch of matter-radiation equality can be used to ease the Hubble tension. However, there is a theoretical problem that why the energy scale of EDE is in coincidence with that of matter-radiation equality when their physics are completely unrelated. Sakstein and Trodden [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 161301 (2020)] proposed a mechanism to solve this coincidence problem with $\mathcal{O}({\rm eV})$-mass neutrino. In this paper, in order to solve the coincidence problem, we propose a new scenario for EDE, in which the onset and ending of EDE ar…
To explore possibilities of avoiding coincidence problem in $f(R)$ gravity we consider models in Einstein conformal frame which are equivalent to Einstein gravity with a minimally coupled scalar field. As the conformal factor determines the coupling term and hence the interaction between matter and dark energy, the function $f(R)$ can in principle be determined by choosing an appropriate function for the deceleration parameter only. Possible behavior of $f(R)$ to avoid coincidence problem are investigated in two such cases.
The interaction between Dark Matter and Dark Energy has been proposed as a mechanism to alleviate the coincidence problem. We analyze the effect of the interaction on the evolution of the gravitational field and propose two new observables based on its effect on the matter peculiar velocity field. We find that for different model parameters the matter peculiar velocity could be factor 2 times larger or 5 times smaller than the amplitude of velocity perturbations in the concordance LCDM cosmological model at the same scales. We compare the effect on the peculiar velocities with those on the Int…
Any non-gravitational coupling between dark matter and dark energy modifies the cosmological dynamics. Interactions in the dark sector are considered to be relevant to address the coincidence problem. Moreover, in various models the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe is a pure interaction phenomenon. Here we review recent approaches in which a coupling between both dark components is crucial for the evolution of the Universe.
In order to test if there is energy transfer between dark energy and dark matter, we investigate cosmological constraints on two forms of nontrivial interaction between the dark matter sector and the sector responsible for the acceleration of the universe, in light of the newly revised observations including OHD, CMB, BAO and SNe Ia. More precisely, we find the same tendencies for both phenomenological forms of the interaction term $Q=3γHρ$, i.e., the parameter $γ$ to be a small number, $|γ|\approx 10^{-2}$. However, concerning the sign of the interaction parameter, we observe that $γ>0$ when …
The cosmic coincidence problem is a serious challenge to dark energy model. We suggest a quantitative criteria for judging the severity of the coincidence problem. Applying this criteria to three different interacting models, including the interacting quintessence, interacting phantom, and interacting Chaplygin gas models, we find that the interacting Chaplygin gas model has a better chance to solve the coincidence problem. Quantitatively, we find that the coincidence index C for the interacting Chaplygin gas model is smaller than that for the interacting quintessence and phantom models by six…
The dynamical behaviors of two interacting dark energy models are considered. In addition to the scaling attractors found in the non-interacting quintessence model with exponential potential, new accelerated scaling attractors are also found in the interacting dark energy models. The coincidence problem is reduced to the choice of parameters in the interacting dark energy models.
We perform a full dynamical analysis by considering the interactions between dark energy and radiation, and dark energy and dark matter. We find that the interaction helps alleviate the coincidence problem for the quintessence model.
