We study the scattering of a weak and far-detuned light from a system of ultracold bosons in 1D and 3D optical lattices. We show the connection between angular distributions of the scattered light and statistical properties of a Bose gas in a periodic potential. The angular patterns are determined by the Fourier transform of the second-order correlation function, and thus they can be used to retrieve information on particle number fluctuations and correlations. We consider superfluid and Mott insulator phases of the Bose gas in a lattice, and we analyze in detail how the scattering depends on the system dimensionality, temperature and atom-atom interactions.
We study the evolution of a system of interacting ultracold bosons, which presents nonlinear, chaotic, behaviors in the limit of very large number of particles. Using the spectral entropy as an indicator of chaos and three different numerical approaches : Exact diagonalization, truncated Husimi method and mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) approximation, we put into evidence the destructive impact of quantum noise on the emergence of the nonlinear dynamics.
We investigate the ground state properties and tunneling dynamics of ultracold dipolar bosons in a one dimensional triple well trap from a few-body ab-initio perspective. Our focus is primarily on the distinctive features of dipolar bosons compared to the contact interacting bosons. Formation of intra-well localization is observed for very strong dipolar interaction. General population rearangement as well as fragmentation and localization effects have been found, depending strongly on the particle number. The energy spectrum for two particles exhibits avoided crossings that lead to several di…
The different resonant regimes that can be achieved by using a magnetic Feshbach resonance are analyzed with a separable two-channel model. Emphasis is put on the case of narrow resonances in a region of intermediate detuning where a shallow dimer exists and an approximate law including the background scattering length for the three-body recombination rate is derived.
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold bosons in a double- and triple-well potential within the Bose-Hubbard model by means of the semiclassical Herman-Kluk propagator and compare the results to the frequently applied "classical dynamics" calculation in terms of the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA). For the double-well system we find the semiclassical results in excellent agreement with the numerically exact ones, while the TWA is not able to reproduce any revivals of the wave function. The triple-well system turns out to be more difficult to handle due to the irregularity o…
We study macroscopic superpositions in the orbital rather than the spatial degrees of freedom, in a three-dimensional double-well system. We show that the ensuing dynamics of $N$ interacting excited ultracold bosons, which in general requires at least eight single-particle modes and ${N+7 \choose N}$ Fock vectors, is described by a surprisingly small set of many-body states. An initial state with half the atoms in each well, and purposely excited in one of them, gives rise to the tunneling of axisymmetric and transverse vortex structures. We show that transverse vortices tunnel orders of magni…
We consider the dynamics of two-dimensional interacting ultracold bosons triggered by suddenly switching on an artificial gauge field. The system is initialized in the ground state of a harmonic trapping potential. As a function of the strength of the applied artificial gauge, we analyze the emergent dynamics by monitoring the angular momentum, the fragmentation as well the entropy and variance of the entropy of absorption or single-shot images. We solve the underlying time-dependent many-boson Schrödinger equation using the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for indistinguisha…
We investigate the mechanism in the tunneling dynamics of open ultracold few-boson systems by numerically solving the time-dependent few-boson Schrödinger equation exactly. By starting from a weakly repulsive, initially coherent two-boson system we demonstrate that the decay dynamics incorporate fragmentation. The wavefunction of the tunneling state exhibits a pronounced dynamically-stable pattern which we explain by an analytical model. By studying more bosons and stronger interactions we arrive to the conclusion that the decay by tunneling is not a coherent process and exhibits a wealth of p…
We show that an ansatz based on independent composite bosons [Phys. Rep. 463, 215 (2008)] accurately describes the condensate fraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold Fermi gases. The entanglement between the fermionic constituents of a single Feshbach molecule then governs the many-particle statistics of the condensate, from the limit of strong interaction to close to unitarity. This result strengthens the role of entanglement as the indispensable driver of composite-boson behavior. The condensate fraction of fermion pairs at zero temperature that we compute matches excell…
We study the influence of particle interaction on a quantum walk on a bipartite one-dimensional lattice with decay from every second site. The corresponding non-interacting (linear) system has been shown to have a topological transition described by the average displacement before decay. Here we use this topological quantity to distinguish coherent quantum dynamics from incoherent classical dynamics caused by a breaking of the translational symmetry. We furthermore analyze the behavior by means of a rate equation providing a quantitative description of the incoherent nonlinear dynamics.
A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques. We present results based on a non-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states, corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures.
Following a `bottom-up approach' in understanding many-particle effects and dynamics we provide a systematic ab initio study of the dependence of the breathing dynamics of ultracold bosons in a 1D harmonic trap on the number of bosons ranging from few to many. To this end, we employ the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Bosons (ML-MCTDHB) which has been developed very recently [S. Krönke, L. Cao, O. Vendrell and P. Schmelcher. {\it New J. Phys.} {\bf 15}, 063018 (2013)]. The beating behavior for two bosons is found numerically and consequently explained by an an…
We investigate theoretically soliton excitations and dynamics of their formation in strongly correlated systems of ultracold bosonic atoms in two and three dimensional optical lattices. We derive equations of nonlinear hydrodynamics in the regime of strong interactions and incommensurate fillings, when atoms can be treated as hard core bosons. When parameters change in one direction only we obtain Korteweg-de Vries type equation away from half-filling and modified KdV equation at half-filling. We apply this general analysis to a problem of the decay of the density step. We consider stability o…
We theoretically investigate the generation of microscopic atomic NOON states, corresponding to the coherent |N,0> + |0,N> superposition with N ~ 5 particles, via collective tunneling of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms within a symmetric double-well potential in the self-trapping regime. We show that a periodic driving of the double well with suitably tuned amplitude and frequency parameters allows one to substantially boost this tunneling process without altering its collective character. The time scale to generate the NOON superposition, which corresponds to half the tunneling time and w…
We describe an experimental setup for imaging topologically protected Floquet edge states using ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. Our setup involves a deep two dimensional optical lattice with a time dependent superlattice that modulates the hopping between neighboring sites. The finite waist of the superlattice beam yields regions with different topological numbers. One can observe chiral edge states by imaging the real-space density of a bosonic packet launched from the boundary between two topologically distinct regions.
Based on a one-dimensional double-well superlattice with a unit filling of ultracold atoms per site, we propose a scheme to generate scalable entangled states in the superlattice through resonant lattice shakings. Our scheme utilizes periodic lattice modulations to entangle two atoms in each unit cell with respect to their orbital degree of freedom, and the complete atomic system in the superlattice becomes a cluster of bipartite entangled atom pairs. To demonstrate this we perform $ab \ initio$ quantum dynamical simulations using the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree Meth…
We investigate the out-of-equilibrium properties of a system of interacting bosons in a ring lattice. We present a Floquet driving that induces clockwise (counterclockwise) circulation of the particles among the odd (even) sites of the ring which can be mapped to a fully connected model of clocks of two counter-rotating species. The clock-like motion of the particles is at the core of a period-$n$ discrete time crystal where $L=2n$ is the number of lattice sites. In presence of a "staircase-like" on-site potential, we report the emergence of a second characteristic timescale in addition to the…
Ultracold interacting atoms are an excellent tool to study correlation functions of many-body systems that are generally eluding detection and manipulation. Herein, we investigate the ground state of bosons in a tilted triple-well potential and characterize the many-body state by the eigenvalues of its reduced one-body density matrix and Glauber correlation functions. We unveil how the interplay between the interaction strength and the tilt can be used to control the number of correlated wells as well as the fragmentation, i.e. the number of macroscopic eigenvalues of the reduced one-body dens…
We present a joint experimental and theoretical analysis to assess the adiabatic experimental preparation of ultracold bosons in optical lattices aimed at simulating the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Thermometry of lattice gases is realized from the superfluid to the Mott regime by combining the measurement of three-dimensional momentum-space densities with ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the same quantity. The measured temperatures across the superfluid-to-Mott transition are in agreement with isentropic lines reconstructed via QMC for the experimental parameters o…
We study the interplay between disorder, interactions and decoherence induced by spontaneous emission process. Interactions are included in the Anderson model via a mean-field approximation, and a simple model for spontaneous emission is introduced. Numerical simulations allow us to study the effects of decoherence on different dynamical regimes. Physical pictures for the mechanisms at play are discussed and provide simple interpretations. Finally, we discuss the validity of scaling laws on the initial state width.
A correlated many-body calculation is presented to characterize the Shannon information entropy of trapped interacting bosons. We reformulate the one-body Shannon information entropy in terms of the one-body probability density. The minimum limit of the entropy uncertainty relation (EUR) is approached by making $N$ very small in our numerical work. We examine the effect of correlations in the calculation of information entropy. Comparison with the mean-field result shows that the correlated basis function is indeed required to characterize the important features of the information entropies. W…
We examine the spectral structure and many-body dynamics of two and three repulsively interacting bosons trapped in a one-dimensional double-well, for variable barrier height, inter-particle interaction strength, and initial conditions. By exact diagonalization of the many-particle Hamiltonian, we specifically explore the dynamical behaviour of the particles launched either at the single particle ground state or saddle point energy, in a time-independent potential. We complement these results by a characterisation of the cross-over from diabatic to quasi-adiabatic evolution under finite-time s…
We consider a one-dimensional "zigzag" lattice, pictured as a two-site wide single strip taken from a triangular lattice, affected by a tunable homogeneous magnetic flux piercing its triangular plaquettes. We focus on a semi-synthetic lattice produced by combining a one-dimensional spin-dependent lattice in the long direction with laser-induced transitions between atomic internal states that define the short synthetic dimension. In contrast to previous studies on semi-synthetic lattices, the atom-atom interactions are nonlocal in both lattice directions. We investigate the ground-state propert…
We study the dynamics of a nonlinear one-dimensional disordered system obtained by coupling the Anderson model with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. An analytical model provides us with a single quantity globally characterizing the localization of the system. This quantity obeys a scaling law with respect to the width of the initial state, which can be used to characterize the dynamics independently of the initial state.
We study the crossover of a finite one-dimensional (1D) bosonic ensemble from weak to strong interactions in harmonic traps and multi-well potentials. Although these systems are very common in experimental setups and have been studied theoretically, an analytical description is lacking. We perform Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo calculations which we show to be in good agreement with results from analytical functions that we construct to describe these systems. For the harmonic trap we use the correlated-pair wave function which we introduced in [1] considering here much larger atom numbers, goi…
Most recently, the path integral molecular dynamics has been successfully used to consider the thermodynamics of single-component identical bosons and fermions. In this work, the path integral molecular dynamics is developed to simulate the thermodynamics, Green's function and momentum distribution of two-component bosons in three dimensions. As an example of our general method, we consider the thermodynamics of up to sixteen bosons in a three-dimensional harmonic trap. For noninteracting spinor bosons, our simulation shows a bump in the heat capacity. As the repulsive interaction strength inc…
We present a brief overview of the phases and dynamics of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of a tilt. We begin with a brief summary of the possible experimental setup for generating the tilt. This is followed by a discussion of the effective low-energy model for these systems and its equilibrium phases. We also chart the relation of this model to the recently studied system of ultracold Rydberg atoms. Next, we discuss the non-equilibrium dynamics of this model for quench, ramp and periodic protocols with emphasis on the periodic drive which can be understood in terms of a…
A forthcoming challenge in ultracold lattice gases is the simulation of quantum magnetism. That involves both the preparation of the lattice atomic gas in the desired spin state and the probing of the state. Here we demonstrate how a probing scheme based on atom-light interfaces gives access to the order parameters of nontrivial quantum magnetic phases, allowing us to characterize univocally strongly correlated magnetic systems produced in ultracold gases. This method, which is also nondemolishing, yields spatially resolved spin correlations and can be applied to bosons or fermions. As a proof…
We report the creation of ultracold bosonic dipolar $^{23}\textrm{Na}^{39}\textrm{K}$ molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground state. Starting from weakly bound molecules immersed in an ultracold atomic mixture, we coherently transfer the dimers to the rovibrational ground state using an adiabatic Raman passage. We analyze the two-body decay in a pure molecular sample and in molecule-atom mixtures and find an unexpectedly low two-body decay coefficient for collisions between molecules and $^{39}\textrm{K}$ atoms in a selected hyperfine state. The preparation of bosonic $^{23}\textrm{Na…
The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of finite ultracold bosonic ensembles in periodically driven one-dimensional optical lattices is investigated. Our study reveals that the driving enforces the bosons in different wells to oscillate in-phase and to exhibit a dipole-like mode. A wide range from weak-to-strong driving frequencies is covered and a resonance-like behaviour of the intra-well dynamics is discussed. In the proximity of the resonance a rich intraband excitation spectrum is observed. The single particle excitation mechanisms are studied in the framework of Floquet theory elucidating the r…
We explore the correlated quantum dynamics of a single atom, regarded as an open system, with a spatio-temporally localized coupling to a finite bosonic environment. The single atom, initially prepared in a coherent state of low energy, oscillates in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and thereby periodically penetrates an interacting ensemble of $N_A$ bosons, held in a displaced trap. We show that the inter-species energy transfer accelerates with increasing $N_A$ and becomes less complete at the same time. System-environment correlations prove to be significant except for times when the excess …
We investigate the occurence of Wigner-localization phenomena in bosonic dipolar ultracold few-body systems with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. We show that the latter strongly enhances the effects of the dipole-dipole interactions, allowing to reach the Wigner-localized regime for strengths of the dipole moment much smaller than those necessary in the spin-orbit-free case.
We show that a two-component mixture of a few repulsively interacting ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional trap possesses very different quantum regimes and that the crossover between them can be induced by tuning the interactions in one of the species. In the composite fermionization regime, where the interactions between both components are large, none of the species show large occupation of any natural orbital. Our results show that by increasing the interaction in one of the species, one can reach the phase-separated regime. In this regime, the weakly interacting component stays at the cen…
We study zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in harmonically trapped one-dimensional interacting Bose gases, using the self-consistent multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method. We define $phase$ $fluctuations$ from the full single-particle density matrix by the spatial decay exponent of off-diagonal long-range order. In a regime of mesoscopic particle numbers and moderate contact couplings, we derive the spatial dependence of the amplitude of phase fluctuations, determined from the {\em self-consistently} derived shape of the field operator orbitals and Fock space orbital occupatio…
During the last decade, many exciting phenomena have been experimentally observed and theoretically predicted for ultracold atoms in optical lattices. This paper reviews these rapid developments concentrating mainly on the theory. Different types of the bosonic systems in homogeneous lattices of different dimensions as well as in the presence of harmonic traps are considered. An overview of the theoretical methods used for these investigations as well as of the obtained results is given. Available experimental techniques are presented and discussed in connection with theoretical considerations…
The non-linear coupled particle light dynamics of an ultracold gas in the field of two independent counter-propagating laser beams can lead to the dynamical formation of a self-ordered lattice structure as presented in Phys. Rev. X 6, 021026 (2016). Here we present new numerical studies on experimentally observable signatures to monitor the growth and properties of such a crystal in real time. While, at least theoretically, optimal non-destructive observation of the growth dynamics and the hallmarks of the crystalline phase can be performed by analyzing the scattered light, monitoring the evol…
We investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions in a cubic optical lattice, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. Rich phase diagrams of the system are mapped out at both zero and finite temperature, and in particular the existence of a spin-singlet condensate is established. Interestingly, at finite temperature, we find that the superfluid can be heated into a Mott insulator with even (odd) filling via a first- (second-) order phase transition, analogous to the Pomeranchuk effect in $^{3}$He. Moreover, for typical experimental setups, we …
Ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices self-organize into a variety of structural and quantum phases when placed into a single-mode cavity and pumped by a laser. Cavity optomechanical effects induce an atom density modulation at the cavity-mode wave length that competes with the optical lattice arrangement. Simultaneously short-range interactions via particle hopping promote superfluid order, such that a variety of structural and quantum coherent phases can occur. We analyze the emerging phase diagram in two dimensions by means of an extended Bose-Hubbard model using a local mean field ap…
More than 30 years ago, Thouless introduced the concept of a topological charge pump that would enable the robust transport of charge through an adiabatic cyclic evolution of the underlying Hamiltonian. In contrast to classical transport, the transported charge was shown to be quantized and purely determined by the topology of the pump cycle, making it robust to perturbations. On a fundamental level, the quantized charge transport can be connected to a topological invariant, the Chern number, first introduced in the context of the integer quantum Hall effect. A Thouless quantum pump may theref…
We study the role of the Dipolar-Induced Resonance (DIR) in a quasi-one-dimensional system of ultracold bosons. We first describe the effect of the DIR on two particles in a harmonic trap. Then, we consider a deep optical lattice loaded with ultracold dipolar bosons. In order to describe this system, we introduce a novel atom-dimer extended Bose-Hubbard model, which is the minimal model correctly accounting for the DIR. We analyze the impact of the DIR on the phase diagram at T=0 by exact diagonalization of a small-sized system. We show that the DIR strongly affects this phase diagram. In part…
In their Comment [1] Giraud and Combescot point out that the contribution to the impurity-boson distribution function $ρ_{bi}(x-y)$ of a term we dropped is not negligible, rather than being negligible in the thermodynamic limit as we had conjectured. We now agree with them, but nevertheless our results for $ρ_{bi}$ are highly accurate for large impurity-boson mass ratio $m_i/m$ and remain qualitatively correct for all values of $m_i/m$ and all values of the boson-impurity coupling constant.
We investigate the mean-field phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions in two dimensions. This model describes ultracold bosonic atoms confined by a two-dimensional optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode with the same wavelength as the lattice. We determine the ground-state phase diagram for a grand-canonical ensemble by means of analytical and numerical methods. Our results mostly agree with the ones reported in Dogra et al. [PRA 94, 023632 (2016)], and have a remarkable qualitative agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo phase diagrams of Flo…
We analyze the dynamical response of a ultracold binary gas mixture in presence of strong boson-fermion couplings. Mapping the problem onto that of the optical response of a metal/semiconductor electronic degrees of freedom to electromagnetic perturbation we calculate the corresponding dynamic linear response susceptibility in the non-perturbative regimes of strong boson-fermion coupling using diagrammatic resummation technique as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We evaluate the Bragg spectral function as well as the optical conductivity and find a pseudogap, which forms in certain par…
We analyze various quantum phases of ultracold bosonic atoms in a periodic one dimensional optical superlattice. Our studies have been performed using the finite size density matrix renormalization group (FS-DMRG) method in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. Calculations have been carried out for a wide range of densities and the energy shifts due to the superlattice potential. At commensurate fillings, we find the Mott insulator and the superfluid phases as well as Mott insulators induced by the superlattice. At a particular incommensurate density, the system is found to be in the super…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice with a time dependent hopping amplitude J(t)=J_0 +δJ \cos(ωt) which takes the system from a superfluid phase near the Mott-superfluid transition (J= J_0+δJ) to a Mott phase (J=J_0-δJ) and back through a quantum critical point (J=J_c) and demonstrate dynamic freezing of the boson wavefunction at specific values of ω. At these values, the wavefunction overlap F (defect density P=1-F) approaches unity (zero). We provide a qualitative explanation of the freezing phenomenon, show it's robustness against quantum fluctuat…
We study the behaviour of ultracold bosonic gas in the critical region above the Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of an artificial magnetic field, $B_\mathrm{art}$. We show that the condensate fluctuations above the critical temperature $T_c$ cause the fluctuational susceptibility, $χ_\mathrm{fl}$, of a uniform gas to have a stronger power-law divergence than in an analogous superconducting system. Measuring such a divergence opens new ways of exploring critical properties of the ultracold gas and an opportunity of an accurate determination of $T_c$. We describe a method of measuring…
We study ultracold bosons in three dimensions with an anisotropic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We first carry out the exact summation of ladder diagrams for the two-boson t-matrix at zero energy. Then, with the t-matrix as the effective interaction, we find the ground-state phase diagrams of bosons in mean field as a function of the spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropy, and the scattering lengths between particles in the same and in different pseudospin states. The resulting phase diagrams have much richer structures than those obtained using mean-field couplings, exhibiting three di…
We present a design for simulating quantum pumping of electrons in a mesoscopic circuit with ultra-cold atoms in a micro-magnetic chip trap. We calculate theoretical results for quantum pumping of both bosons and fermions, identifying differences and common features, including geometric behavior and resonance transmission. We analyze the feasibility of experiments with bosonic $^{87}$Rb and fermionic $^{40}$K atoms with an emphasis on reliable atomic current measurements.
Very recently Girardeau and Minguzzi [arXiv:0807.3366v2, Phys. Rev. A 79, 033610 (2009)] have studied an impurity in a one-dimensional gas of hard-core bosons. In particular they deal with the general case where the mass of the impurity is different from the mass of the bosons and the impurity-boson interaction is not necessarily infinitely repulsive. We show that one of their initial step is erroneous, contradicting both physical intuition and known exact results. Their results in the general case apply only actually when the mass of the impurity is infinite.
We combine theory and experiment to investigate five-body recombination in an ultracold gas of atomic cesium at negative scattering length. A refined theoretical model, in combination with extensive laboratory tunability of the interatomic interactions, enables the five-body resonant recombination rate to be calculated and measured. The position of the new observed recombination feature agrees with a recent theoretical prediction and supports the prediction of a family of universal cluster states at negative $a$ that are tied to an Efimov trimer.
The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of interaction quenched finite ultracold bosonic ensembles in periodically driven one-dimensional optical lattices is investigated. It is shown that periodic driving enforces the bosons in the outer wells of the finite lattice to exhibit out-of-phase dipole-like modes, while in the central well the atomic cloud experiences a local breathing mode. The dynamical behavior is investigated with varying driving frequency, revealing a resonant-like behavior of the intra-well dynamics. An interaction quench in the periodically driven lattice gives rise to admixtures of …
We study the Mott phases and the superfluid-insulator transition of two-component ultracold bosons on a square optical lattice in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field, which renders a SU(2) hopping matrix for the bosons. Using a resummed hopping expansion, we calculate the excitation spectra in the Mott insulating phases and demonstrate that the superfluid-insulator phase boundary displays a non-monotonic dependence on the gauge field strength. We also compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the presence of the non-Abelian field and show that they develop peaks at non…
We study the quasiadiabatic dynamics of a one-dimensional system of ultracold bosonic atoms loaded in an optical superlattice. Focusing on a slow linear variation in time of the superlattice potential, the system is driven from a conventional Mott insulator phase to a superlattice-induced Mott insulator, crossing in between a gapless critical superfluid region. Due to the presence of a gapless region, a number of defects depending on the velocity of the quench appear. Our findings suggest a power-law dependence similar to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for intermediate values of the quench rate. F…
The relationship between natural orbitals, one-body coherences and two-body correlations is explored for bosonic many-body systems of definite parity with two occupied single-particle states. We show that the strength of local two-body correlations at the parity-symmetry center characterizes the number state distribution and controls the structure of non-local two-body correlations. A recipe for the experimental reconstruction of the natural orbital densities and quantum depletion is derived. These insights into the structure of the many-body wave-function are applied to the predicted quantum-…
So far the interaction of ultacold atoms can only be tuned within one particular scattering channel near a resonance, where the spinor structure of atomic isotopes is destroyed due to the typically large magnetic field. In this Letter, we propose a scheme to realize {\it multiple-channel scattering resonance} (MCSR) of ultracold bosons in one-dimension while still keeping their spinor structure. The MCSR refers to a simultaneous scattering resonance among all different scattering channels, including those breaking SU(2) and SO(2) spin rotation symmetries. Essential ingredients for MCSR include…
We study the dynamics of ultracold Bosons in a double-well potential within the two-mode Bose-Hubbard model by means of semiclassical methods. By applying a WKB quantization we find analytical results for the energy spectrum, which are in excellent agreement with numerical exact results. They are valid in the energy range of plasma oscillations, both in the Rabi and the Josephson regime. Adopting the reflection principle and the Poisson summation formula we derive an analytical expression for the dynamics of the population imbalance depending on the few relevant parameters of the system only. …
We propose to realize the anisotropic triangular-lattice Bose-Hubbard model with positive tunneling matrix elements by using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice dressed by a fast lattice oscillation. This model exhibits frustrated antiferromagnetism at experimentally feasible temperatures; it interpolates between a classical rotor model for weak interaction, and a quantum spin-1/2 $XY$-model in the limit of hard-core bosons. This allows to explore experimentally gapped spin liquid phases predicted recently [Schmied et al., New J. Phys. {\bf 10}, 045017 (2008)].
We investigate the zero-temperature excitation spectrum of two-dimensional soft-core bosons for a wide range parameters and across the phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid state. Based on mean field calculations and recent Quantum Monte Carlo results, we demonstrate the applicability of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, even at high interaction strengths where the system forms an insulating cluster crystal. Interestingly, our study reveals that the maximum energy of the longitudinal phonon band in the supersolid phase connects to the maxon energy of the superfluid at the phase …
We design a quantum battery made up of bosons or fermions in an ultracold-atom setup, described by Fermi-Hubbard and Bose-Hubbard models, respectively. We compare the performance of bosons and fermions to determine which can function as a quantum battery more effectively given a particular on-site interaction and initial state temperature. The performance of a quantum battery is quantified by the maximum energy stored per unit time over the evolution under an on-site charging Hamiltonian. We report that when the initial battery state is in the ground state, fermions outperform bosons in a cert…
