We perform a theoretical study of composite superconducting qubit systems for the case of a coupled qubit configuration based on a hybrid qubit circuit made of both charge and phase qubits, which are coupled via a sigma(x)xsigma(z) interaction. We compute the system's eigen-energies in terms of the qubit transition frequencies and the strength of the inter-qubit coupling, and describe the sensitivity of the energy crossing/anti-crossing features to such coupling. We compute the hybrid system's dissipative dynamics for the cases of i) collective and ii) independent decoherence, whereby the system interacts with one common and two different baths of harmonic oscillators, respectively. The calculations have been performed within the Bloch-Redfield formalism and we report the solutions for the populations and the coherences of the system's reduced density matrix. The dephasing and relaxation rates are explicitly calculated as a function of the heat bath temperature.
Majorana fermions are long-sought exotic particles that are their own antiparticles. Here we propose to utilize superconducting circuits to construct two superconducting-qubit arrays where Majorana modes can occur. A so-called Majorana qubit is encoded by using the unpaired Majorana modes, which emerge at the left and right ends of the chain in the Majorana-fermion representation. We also show this Majorana qubit in the spin representation and its advantage, over a single superconducting qubit, regarding quantum coherence. Moreover, we propose to use four superconducting qubits as the smallest…
We consider dissipative dynamics of a flux qubit caused by 1/f noises, which act both on the shunting LC-contour and on the SQUID loop. These classical Gaussian noises modulate of the level splitting and of the tunnel coupling, respectively, and they are partially correlated. The transient evolution of qubit has been studied for the regimes: (a) the interwell incoherent tunneling, (b) the relaxation of interlevel population, and (c) the decoherence of the off-diagonal part of a density matrix. For all regimes, the relaxation rates and the frequency renormalization [for the case (c)] are analyz…
Following the demonstration of semiconductor-based Josephson junctions which are fully tuneable by electrical means, new routes have been opened for the study of hybrid semiconductor-superconductor qubits. These include semiconductor-based transmon qubits, single-spin Andreev qubits, and fault-tolerant topological qubits based on Majorana zero modes. In this perspective, we review recent progress in the path towards such novel qubit designs. After a short introduction and a brief digression about the historical roadmap that has led to the experimental state-of-the art, the emphasis is placed o…
The new superconductivity theory that attributes the $U(1)$ superconductivity phase to a Berry phase arising from many-body wave functions is applied to the circuit quantization for superconducting qubits. The phase-charge duality required for the occurrence of superconductivity in the standard theory becomes irrelevant in the new theory, and the absence of a dissipative quantum phase transition in Josephson junctions is explained. It is shown that a charge-decaying term leads to the compact phase description, and the appearance of Shapiro steps is explained without introducing normal current.
We present measurements of microwave-induced Shapiro steps in a superconducting nanobridge weak link in the dissipative branch of a hysteretic current-voltage characteristic. We demonstrate that Shapiro steps can be used to infer a reduced critical current and associated effective local temperature. Our observation of Shapiro steps in the dissipative branch hows that a finite Josephson coupling exists in the dissipative state and thus can be used to put an upper limit on the effective temperature and on the size of the region that can be heated above the critical temperature. This work provide…
High fidelity quantum information processing requires a combination of fast gates and long-lived quantum memories. In this work, we propose a hybrid architecture, where a parity-protected superconducting qubit is directly coupled to a Majorana qubit, which plays the role of a quantum memory. The superconducting qubit is based upon a $π$-periodic Josephson junction realized with gate-tunable semiconducting wires, where the tunneling of individual Cooper pairs is suppressed. One of the wires additionally contains four Majorana zero modes that define a qubit. We demonstrate that this enables the …
We perform current(I)-voltage(V) measurements on low resistance superconductor-normal-superconductor arrays in finite magnetic fields, focusing on the dilute vortex population regime. We observe significant deviations from predicted behavior, notably the absence of a differential resistance peak near the vortex de-pinning current, and a broad linear I-V region with an extrapolated I intercept equal to the de-pinning current. Comparing these results to an overdamped molecular vortex model, we find that this behavior can be explained by the presence of a history dependent dissipative force. This…
We study Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg (LZS) interferometry in multilevel systems coupled to an Ohmic quantum bath. We consider the case of superconducting flux qubits driven by a dc+ac magnetic fields, but our results can apply to other similar systems. We find a dynamic transition manifested by a symmetry change in the structure of the LZS interference pattern, plotted as a function of ac amplitude and dc detuning. The dynamic transition is from a LZS pattern with nearly symmetric multiphoton resonances to antisymmetric multiphoton resonances at long times (above the relaxation time). We also sho…
We present a comprehensive quasiclassical approach for studying transport properties of superconducting diffusive hybrid structures in the presence of extrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We derive a generalized Usadel equation and boundary conditions that in the normal state reduce to the drift-diffusion theory governing the spin-Hall effect in inversion symmetric materials. These equations predict the non-dissipative spin-galvanic effect, that is the generation of supercurrents by a spin-splitting field, and its inverse -- the creation of magnetic moment by a supercurrent. These effects can be see…
We report investigations of molybdenum nitride (MoN) thin films with different thickness and disorder and with superconducting transition temperature 9.89 K $\ge{T_c}\ge$ 2.78 K. Using terahertz frequency-domain spectroscopy we explore the normal and superconducting charge carrier dynamics for frequencies covering the range from 3 to 38 cm$^{-1}$ (0.1 to 1.1 THz). The superconducting energy scales, i.e. the critical temperature $T_c$, the pairing energy $Δ$, and the superfluid stiffness $J$, and the superfluid density $n_s$ can be well described within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory for …
We propose an experimental scheme to simulate the dynamical quantum Hall effect and the related interaction-induced topological transition with a superconducting-qubit array. We show that a one-dimensional Heisenberg model with tunable parameters can be realized in an array of superconducting qubits. The quantized plateaus, which is a feature of the dynamical quantum Hall effect, will emerge in the Berry curvature of the superconducting qubits as a function of the coupling strength between nearest neighbor qubits. We numerically calculate the Berry curvatures of two-, four- and six-qubit array…
Characterizing superconducting microwave resonators with highly dissipative elements is a technical challenge, but a requirement for implementing and understanding the operation of hybrid quantum devices involving dissipative elements, e.g. for thermal engineering and detection. We present experiments on $λ/4$ superconducting niobium coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators, terminating at the antinode by a dissipative copper microstrip via aluminum leads, such that the resonator response is difficult to measure in a typical microwave environment. By measuring the transmission both above and below …
We propose a realization of flux qubit based on the hybrid ferromagnetic-superconducting device where the flux bias is induced purely by vector potential of the vanishing magnetic field. We support our conclusions with theoretical analysis and self-consistent three-dimensional simulations for material specific parameters.
With substantial evidence of glassy behavior in the phase diagram of high $T_c$ superconductors and its co-existence with superconductivity, we attempt to answer the question: what are the properties of a superconducting state where the force driving cooper pairing becomes dissipative? We find that when the bosonic mediator is local, dissipation acts to reduce the superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$). On the other hand, contrary to naïve expectations, $T_c$ behaves non-monotonically with dissipation for a non-local mediator -- weakly dissipative bosons at different energy scales act co…
